kids fall 2008 health news for families from the experts at henry ford Keep Kids Free from Colds and Flu Susan T. Dombroski, M.D. Pediatrics Henry Ford Medical Center at Lakeside Kids pass germs faster than drivers at Michigan International Speedway. Fortunately, you can reduce your child’s risk of developing colds and the flu this year. An annual flu shot is the first step in preventing influenza. The government recommends all children ages six months to 18 years get vaccinated. Here are other ways you can help your family stay cold and flu free: Ñ Keep clean. Hand washing is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Teach your child to wash with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently, especially before and after eating and when playing with other kids. Ñ Cover it up. To reduce the spread of germs, encourage children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their sleeve instead of their hands. Ñ Stay home. Keep your child home from school if he or she has a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or a bad cough. Children should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school or daycare. Ñ Live healthy. The healthier your children are, the better their immune systems will be at fighting off infections. Ensure that they get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet and participate in daily physical activity. Protect your child from the flu. The best time to get a flu shot is October or November. When you arrive, he doesn’t listen to you and keeps running around the concession area. Your friends have told you that “boys will be boys.” But you talk with your pediatrician. After a thorough evaluation of your son, the doctor says he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a treatable condition. Notice the Signs Kate from Sylvan Lake CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS! Their drawings will be featured in future issues of Henry Ford Health System kids and posted online at HenryFord.com/pediatrics. Thanks again for entering. We hope you will submit an entry in our upcoming contests. The main symptoms of ADHD are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children may experience some or all of these symptoms. ADHD makes it difficult for children to: Ñ sit still Ñ focus Ñ follow directions Ñ finish schoolwork and chores Ñ wait their turn Ñ not interrupt when others are speaking Get Help How do you know whether a child with these behaviors is “a kid just being a kid” or whether it’s more serious? Consult your child’s pediatrician if the behaviors: Ñ affect your child’s ability to learn Ñ seem inappropriate for his or her age Ñ occur in multiple settings Pediatricians are well-qualified to screen for ADHD. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, there is much that can be done. Treatments may include behavioral therapy, medication and counseling to improve your child’s self-esteem. Pediatrics Henry Ford Medical Center at Farmington Road Keeping kids active and eating right is always a challenge. And once Civic Center Park is covered in snow, it will be especially difficult to keep kids moving. But helping children maintain a healthy weight is now more important than ever. One in three kids is obese or seriously overweight. Obesity puts children at risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and joint problems—in childhood and adulthood. Obese children have a good chance of becoming overweight adults, so it’s important to confront the problem early. Your pediatrician can help you decide if your child is at a healthy weight. A Family Approach to Weight Loss You can help your child reach a healthy weight. Commit to changes in diet and exercise as a family. Go grocery shopping together and check food labels. Help your children recognize high-protein foods such as tofu, dairy products, fish and meat, and high-fiber foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts. Everyone in the family should limit foods high in calories and sugar such as candy, chips and snack foods. Exercise together even when the weather turns cold. Walk the dog or rake leaves. When it snows, go ice skating or crosscountry skiing or build a snowman. Head indoors to swim or play basketball. Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy These tips will help your kids lose weight: Ñ Serve smaller portions and don’t offer seconds. Ñ Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Ñ Don’t buy high-calorie dips and sodas. Ñ Pack kids’ lunches rather than allowing them to choose from a school menu. Ñ Serve smart snacks such as yogurt, dried fruit, granola bars and pretzels. Ñ Serve water to drink instead of soda. Ñ Don’t reward behavior with treats.
