Educational Symposium; Multidisciplinary Approaches to Recurrent
Rectal Cancer
On May 6th, 2014, UHN-Princess Margaret Cancer Center hosted an Education
Symposium on the topic of “Multidisciplinary Approaches to Recurrent Rectal
Cancer.” The objective of the symposium was to explore multidisciplinary approaches to
the prevention and management of recurrent rectal cancer. The symposium presenters
included clinicians from a variety of disciplines including Dr. John Kim, Radiation Medicine

On May 12th, 2014, UHN-Kuwait hosted their
partners at KCCC and the UHN-Toronto
visiting team to an Appreciation Reception
dinner. The dinner aimed to celebrate the
Partnership Achievements to date as well as
wish UHN’s CEO, Dr. Robert Bell the best of
luck in his new role as Deputy Minister of
Health. At the dinner, Adil Khalfan
congratulated the teams on the achievements
and presented Kuwait firsts achieved through
Dr. Mohammad Al Khashti, Dr. Robert Bell and Dr. Svetlana
the
collaborative work of Partnership. Some of

those achievements include the development
of the Malnutrition Screening Tool, Tele-pathology System, KCCC website and Nursing
Education in Oncological Emergencies, to name a few. Dr. Ahmad Al Awadhi and Dr.
Robert Bell also gave a few words thanking the teams for their collaboration and hard
work and congratulating them on all the progress that has been made. The guests
enjoyed an evening of socializing, dinner and the beautiful view of Kuwait. The evening
was honored with the attendance of Canada’s acting ambassador to Kuwait as well as the
Assistant Undersecretary, Dr. Mohammad Al Khashti.

Al-Ansari, Palliative Care. The speakers discussed the
appreciation of pelvic anatomy as it relates to pattern
of recurrence, the role of radiotherapy in the
multidisciplinary environment, the current and future
role of cancer biology in the development of
biomarkers in personalized care of rectal cancer
patients. The overriding theme of the evening was the
focus on the role of the extended inter-professional
team in the multidisciplinary management of the
recurrent rectal cancer patient to include nutrition,
pharmacy and palliative care professionals. Members Dr. Fayez Quereshy from Princess

Nurses, a Force for Change - Celebrating International Nursing Day!
On May 13, 2014, the KCCC-UHN Partnership showcased 4 major nursing initiatives for the
Kuwait Nurses Association Conference held at the Islamic Medical Center in the Al Sabah
Medical District. The conference was in recognition of International Nurses Day and had a
focus of:” Nurses, A Force for Change.” The conference was attended by the Health Ministry's
Undersecretary, Dr. Khaled Al-Sahlawi, as well as nursing staff, nurse educators, nurse
administrators and other medical practitioners from the Al Sabah Medical District. The four
initiatives presented by the KCCC-UHN team included the introduction of a Malnutrition
Screening Tool (MST) for assessing malnutrition in oncology patients; Best Practice in
Nursing Program; Kardex – a tool for improving clinical
communication; and eLearning modules on Oncologic
Emergencies – which through the KCCC-UHN Partnership,
are now available to all staff nurses through the hospital
intranet. Dr. Al-Sahlawi expressed his appreciation of the
work done by the Partnership and discussed the KCCC
poster presentation with staff nurse Lini Thomas and Head
Nurse Sara Yousef. The conference provided KCCC with an
opportunity to demonstrate the impact that Oncology Nursing
has on patient care and outcomes, reinforcing that
specialized education and practice is a fundamental
component of nursing at KCCC.

KCCC Launches its Quality Scorecard!
KCCC is devoted to providing the highest quality of
care in a safe manner. This mindset is integrated in
everything that KCCC does and is included in is 5 year strategic plan. More specifically, the
leadership team has made it a mandate to measure and monitor how KCCC is performing
towards achieving this goal. A key tool to monitoring KCCC’s performance is through
implementation of a Quality Scorecard. The Quality Scorecard is an important tool to assess
and quantify the quality of care provided in our organization. It uses simple measurements
(indicators) which track KCCC’s progress towards providing safe and effective patient care.
The KCCC leadership team selected a total of 20 indicators which span across 4 Quality
Domains (Safety, Effectiveness, Access, and Patient Centered Care) to guide KCCC in

systematically evaluating its performance. These indicators are based on international best
practices. The Quality Scorecard also serves to create alignment between KCCC’s
compelling vision for the future and the day-to-day work of the staff. The indicators on the
scorecard translate the quality goals of the organization into identifiable and actionable
improvement efforts. Statistics measuring quality are essential to the daily management of
KCCC. Data from the quality scorecard has and will be used to define quality improvement
efforts/projects and provide guidance for strategic and operational decision-making. As a next
step it is important that each KCCC department create their own department specific quality
scorecard which will serve to provide communication, engagement and improvement tools for
front line staff so that the care

Spotlight on Fatima Abdullah Taher
Ms. Fatima Abduallah Taher joined KCCC in 2007 as an executive secretary to the Head of
Medical Oncology, Dr. Salem Al Shammari. Fatima’s hard work and dedication to KCCC has
made her one of the most appreciated and valued member of the organization. Fatima plays a
critical role in managing patient requests, daily issues and appointments. On top of those
duties, Fatima is also involved in organizing the Out of Country Meetings for Treatment
Abroad. Throughout her employment, Fatima has witnessed many positive changes and
improvements in the center such as improved patient care, new hospital infrastructures, as
well as advancements in hospital facilities and technology. Through the interview, it was clear
that the most rewarding part of her daily work and what keeps her motivated on a daily basis
is the help she provides patients and their families.
Lab Order Management Tool at KCCC
Under the leadership of Dr. Salah Al Waheeb, Director of KCCC Laboratory Department, the
Cytology Lab Quality team and the UHN-Kuwait team
launched phase one of the lab order management pilot for
enhanced specimen identification on May 11, 2014. The
Lab Order Management Tool (LOMT) allows lab staff
access to KCCC patient demographic information in the
central registration repository of the Medical Records
Department and enables lab technicians to enter lab
requisition information for patients from KCCC and other
hospitals. The tool assigns auto generated specimen
numbers for each lab requisition and produces labels with
important information (eg. Patient Name, File No., Civil ID
No., Specimen Type, and Specimen No.). Upon completion KCCC Cytology Lab member, Tareq
Abdul, using the LOMT
of the two month pilot, the system will be evaluated and
phase two planning will be initiated. Phase 2 includes tracking specimen processing. The
LOMT aims to decrease lab specimen rejection rates thereby helping KCCC deliver better
care to its patients. Congratulations to both KCCC and UHN teams for their commitment,
positive patient identification and hard work .
