NATIONAL FOREWORD
This draft Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 1496-2:2008 ‘Series 1 Freight
containers – Specification and testing Part 2 : Thermal containers’ issued by the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO), shall be adopted by Bureau of Indian Standards on
the recommendation of the Transport Packages, Packaging Codes, Freight Containers and
Pallets Sectional Committee and approval of the Transport Engineering Division Council.
This Standard was first published in 1993 as adoption of ISO 1496-2:1988. Then the
Standard was first revised in 2001 after the revision of ISO 1496-2 in 1996. Subsequent to the
revision of ISO 1496-2 in 2008, the second revision of this Standard has been undertaken to
bring it in line with the revised ISO standard.
The text of ISO Standard has been proposed to be approved as suitable for publication as
Indian Standard without deviations. Certain conventions and terminologies are, however, not
identical to those used in Indian Standard. Attention is particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard,
they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the
current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker.
In this adopted standard, reference appears to the following International Standards for which
Indian Standards also exist. The Corresponding Indian Standard which is to be substituted in
its place is given below along with their degree of equivalence for the edition indicated:

with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall
be rounded off in accordance with IS 2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values
(revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the
same as that of the specified value in this standard.

Subsequently ISO 3676:1983 was technically revised and published as ISO 3676:2012. This
revision has been undertaken to harmonize the standard with latest version of ISO standard.
