PV KIDS’ CORNER SUMMER DAY CAMP OVERVIEW
CAMP DATES AND TIMES
CAMP FACILITIES
PV Kids’ Corner offers a 10-week Summer Day
Camp Program from June 9 through August 15,
2014. (Summer Day Camp will be closed July 4.)
Summer Day Camp is an all day program operating
from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. PV Kids’ Corner does
not impose additional charges for these extended
program hours.
Program hours for core activities are approximately
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so all children should arrive
by 9:00 a.m. each day. Occasionally, children may
be asked to arrive earlier than 8:00 a.m. to check-in
for field trips or other activities.
Camp closes promptly at 6:30 p.m. each day. Late
fees are charged for pick-ups after 6:30 p.m. and are
due at the time of service. Excessive, repeated, or
non-payment of late pick-ups will jeopardize a
child’s enrollment.
Parking is available for easy access to the
classrooms and sign-in tables. An Arts & Crafts
classroom, a Computer Lab, Game Room and
Camp Section Home Rooms allow groups to
alternate time spent inside and outdoors.
WEEKLY CAMP ENROLLMENT
Parents may enroll children in Summer Day Camp
on a weekly basis or for the entire 10-week
program, with five or three days per week
enrollment options. Children enrolling for three
days must sign up for specific days. Trading of days
and make-up days are not possible and there are no
refunds, credits or adjustments for absences or
missed activities.
Space is limited, so register early. Registrations are
processed on a first come, first served basis. When
capacity is reached, families will be notified that
they have been placed on a waiting list.
CAMP SECTIONS
Children are placed in camp sections based on their
grade in the fall. Awesome Kids (grades TK-1),
Cool Kids (grades 2-3) and Extreme Kids (grades 45) enjoy multiple activities designed for the
interests and abilities of their age group. Within
each camp section, children are placed in groups
small enough to get to know staff and make new
friends.
Several mornings and each afternoon during the
week, campers are able to choose special interest
activities. In these special camp clubs, ages may be
mixed within the groups.
CAMP T-SHIRTS FOR FIELD TRIPS
One Summer Day Camp T-shirt is included as part
of your initial camp registration and must be worn
on all field trips for camper safety.
T-shirts will be distributed on your child’s first day
at camp with field trip information, so please be
prepared to spend up to 20 minutes with camp staff
on your child’s first day.
Additional shirts are available for $10 each payable
by check, money order and EZ-EFT. Cash
payments are not accepted. Please write your
child’s full name on each check or money order.

Peninsula Unified School District.
This location offers a secure and unique setting. It
also offers campers extensive use of the campus,
outdoor courts, large outdoor playing fields, and
classrooms.
WEEKLY CAMP NEWSLETTER
Each week, camp staff prints a Summer Camp
Newsletter that is available at the sign-in/out tables
and on our website www.pvpusd.k12.ca.us/pvkids.
You will find important information listing
upcoming camp activities, notices and specific
times for trips and activities.
Please make a note of specific check-in times for
pre-paid optional field trips and activities. Campers
may be required to arrive at Camp at 7:00 am for
field trips and other activities.
Camp fees will not be refunded, credited or
adjusted for missed field trips or activities.
2
PERSONAL ITEMS AND CLOTHING
Please label all items with your child’s full name
and grade including lunches, backpacks, sunscreen
and clothing and limit unnecessary items.
Toys from home, radios, money and electronic
games are not allowed.
For safety, closed-toed shoes must be worn at all
times. No sandals or bare feet are allowed.
Children should dress for active, and sometimes
messy, play. Sweatshirts or jackets are necessary
for unpredictable weather changes, which occur
frequently on the Peninsula.
Hats or visors and sunscreen are highly
recommended for campers to block the sun. Bathing
suits, sunscreen and dry towels should be sent each
day for campers.
Please check the Lost and Found on a regular basis
for personal items that your child may have left
behind at camp.
At the conclusion of the Summer Programs, lost
items will be kept for one week and then donated to
Goodwill.
SUNSCREEN
Absolutely necessary for campers! Apply at home
and send extra so your child can reapply later.
Be sure to label all personal items, especially
sunscreen, with your child’s full name and grade.
SUMMER DAY CAMP SWIMMING
Regular recreational swim time is scheduled for
campers, subject to PVPUSD pool availability.
Transportation will be by bus and permission slips
must be signed for each trip before a child will be
permitted to participate.
Certified lifeguards are on duty at all pool times.
Non-swimmers are limited to areas of the pool
where they can safely stand with their head above
water at all times. Children must pass swim tests
before they may enter deep water.
Flotation devices are not allowed at any time. Be
sure to send bathing suits, dry towels and sunscreen
each day of your child’s camp attendance.
REGULARLY SCHEDULED WEEKLY
ACTIVITIES FOR CAMPERS
Each week Summer Day Camp participates in at
least one regularly scheduled on-site activity.
Regularly scheduled field trips to the beach, parks
and recreational swimming, if a PVPUSD pool is
available, are also scheduled.
Transportation for field trips to the beach, parks and
recreational swimming will be by bus. Each field
trip or activity must be initialed by a parent on the
completed and signed permission slip before
participation.
Participation in the regularly scheduled off-site field
trips to the pool, beach and parks is optional.
Children not wishing to participate in these
regularly scheduled trips may remain at camp.
Check the Weekly Camp Newsletter or our website
for updated field trip dates and times. Camp fees
will not be refunded, credited or adjusted for missed
field trips or activities.
Once loaded and departing, buses will not be
stopped or held for late campers. Children may
remain at camp if they arrive late and their group
has loaded and departed for the beach or park.
Children may not be dropped off or picked up from
any field trip location.
PV Kids’ Corner Summer Day Camp reserves the
right to cancel or change any scheduled activity or
pre-paid optional trip without prior notification.
PRE-PAID OPTIONAL
FOR CAMPERS
FIELD
TRIPS
Various pre-paid optional field trips are offered
most weeks, which require additional fees to be
paid at the time of registration. Transportation for
pre-paid optional field trips will be by bus.
Annual passes to amusement parks are not allowed
for any pre-paid optional trip, no exceptions. Due to
minimum height restrictions for certain amusement
park rides, some children may be limited in the
rides they can enjoy on these trips.
Children must be enrolled in camp for the day of
the trip, have all fees paid in full and meet the age
requirements. A completed and signed permission
slip must be on file before participation.
Children participating in any of the pre-paid
optional field trips may be required to arrive at
camp as early as 7:00 a.m. for check-in. Summer
Day Camp will operate as usual for children not
participating in these pre-paid optional trips.
3
BEFORE & AFTER SUMMER SCHOOL CHILDCARE OVERVIEW
PV Kids’ Corner offers a Before and After
Elementary Summer School Program June 16 - July
11 at the Cornerstone and Dapplegray Elementary
School campuses. (All PV Kids’ Corner programs
will be closed July 4 for Independence Day.)
All children entering Transitional Kindergarten
through fifth grade are welcome and there are no
residency requirements for participation.
Childcare is available from 7:00 a.m. to class start
time and from school dismissal to 6:30 p.m. PV
Kids’ Corner closes promptly at 6:30 p.m.
Late fees are charged for pick ups after 6:30 p.m.
and are due at the time of service. Excessive,
repeated, or non-payment of late pick ups will
jeopardize a child’s enrollment.
Summer school childcare is offered in two separate
two-week programs. Programs are subject to
cancellation if enrollment is not adequate, so early
enrollment is essential to help assure program
viability.
Each two-week session is offered only as a full
session. There are no pro-rations for less than the
full session attendance. Refer to the Registration
Agreement for enrollment options.
Trading of days, drop-in days and make-up days are
not possible during summer school childcare and
there are no refunds, credits or adjustments for
absences or for less than the full session attendance.
Children must remain on the school campus and
may not be taken to PV Kids’ Corner Summer
Camp for the afternoons.
Space is limited, so register early. Registrations are
processed on a first come, first served basis. When
capacity is reached, waiting lists will begin and
families will be notified.
PV Kids’ Corner reserves the right to cancel any
Before & After Elementary Summer School
Childcare Program session if enrollment is not
adequate. Families will be notified immediately of
any decision to cancel an Elementary Summer
School Childcare Program.
If PV Kids’ Corner cancels a Before & After
Summer School Childcare Program session due to
low enrollment, all monies paid will be refunded in
full.
Information and directions to Cornerstone and
Dapplegray Elementary Schools are printed on the

requests to the District Accounting Department for
processing. Refund checks are then issued and
mailed to the billing address on file with PV Kids’
Corner. Please allow a minimum of two weeks to
receive refund checks by mail.
PARENT & STAFF COMMUNICATION
Communication with parents is very important. A
file folder with your child’s name will be in a box
near the sign-in/out tables at summer school or
Summer Camp.
Please check this folder daily for messages from
staff, important information regarding your child
and payment receipts. Remember checks and notes
must be handed directly to staff, not placed in the
communication folder.
SIGNING CHILDREN IN AND OUT
A complete adult signature and legible time
notation are required each day for each child upon
arrival and departure from PV Kids’ Corner.
Children must be escorted all the way into PV Kids’
Corner and signed in by an adult each day.
Anyone picking up children from PV Kids’ Corner
must be listed on the child’s registration form by
the parent as an authorized person. In an emergency
situation, if the person picking up the child is not on
the registration form, PV Kids’ Corner must receive
a phone call or a written note from the parent giving
permission. A photo ID will be required at pick up.
For safety, we may check your picture ID if staff
does not recognize you. Your full cooperation is
greatly appreciated for everyone’s safety.
LATE PICK UP POLICY
Summer Programs close promptly at 6:30 p.m. Late
fees of $1.00 per child per minute late will be
charged for the first three late pick ups. Late fees of
$5.00 per child per minute late will be charged
for the fourth and subsequent late pick ups.
Payment for late pick ups is due at the time of
service. Excessive, repeated, or non-payment of late
pick up fees will jeopardize a child’s enrollment.
7
BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
NUTRITION
Children and parents must sign a Behavior Contract
that outlines expected behavior at the PV Kids’
Corner Summer Programs. This Behavior Contract,
and the PVPUSD Safe Schools Policy and
Electronic Resources Policy, apply to all students
enrolled in any PV Kids’ Corner Program. Behavior
expectations are consistent with District
disciplinary policies.
PV Kids’ Corner serves light snacks in the midmorning and afternoon. You may send an additional
snack with your child to be eaten after 5:00 p.m.
To ensure a safe and positive environment,
unacceptable behavior will be handled firmly by
staff. Positive reinforcement, warnings and
assertive discipline that may include removal from
a group situation or denial of a privilege may be
used. Positive conflict management strategies are
taught to help children deal with problems.
Staff will ask for a conference if disruptive or
unacceptable behavior persists so we can work
together to change the behavior. If a child poses a
direct threat to the safety of himself, another child,
or an adult, or if the child refuses to cooperate and
follow directions, the parents will be contacted to
pick up the child.
The first time a child is sent home from PV Kids’
Corner will be a one-day suspension. The next time
a child is sent home from PV Kids’ Corner will be a
three-day suspension. The third time a child is
suspended and sent home is cause for removal from
the program. Severe behavior issues may result in
immediate dismissal from the program.
Children who fail to abide by PV Kids’ Corner
behavior policies will be removed from the PV
Kids’ Corner Program without refund, credit or
adjustment to fees.
If a child is dismissed from class, sent to the office
or suspended from summer school for behavior
reasons, they cannot attend the PV Kids’ Corner
Program until they are able to return to summer
school. No refunds, credits or adjustments will be
given to children absent for disciplinary reasons.
DISMISSAL
Parents will be given notice in writing, in person, or
by a phone call from the PV Kids’ Corner business
office or Section Supervisor if a child is going to be
dismissed from the program. Children may be
dismissed for the following reasons:
1. Their behavior endangers the safety, health or
security of themselves or others in the program.
2. All fees, contracted or incurred, are not paid as
agreed or outlined in this Parent Handbook.
3. Policies as outlined in this Parent Handbook are
not followed.
If your child has food allergies, be sure to indicate
them on the Activity Permission/Medical
Authorization form. Please complete a new form in
its entirety if any information needs to be updated.
Due to the many circumstances that are not within
PV Kids’ Corner control, it cannot be guaranteed
that a child with a food allergy will not come into
contact with the item.
Please send a ready-to-eat sack lunch and beverage
each day with your child. Lunches in completely
disposable packaging are preferred and required for
campers on field trip days. Be sure to label the
lunch with your child’s full name and grade.
Children get extra hungry and very thirsty at camp.
Sending good-sized lunches and extra drinks is
important each day of attendance and especially for
field trips.
INJURIES
Staff is trained in first aid to handle minor injuries
and will notify parents of minor injuries by using
the injury report form. Parents must inform staff if
their child has any life threatening allergies or
medical condition. If it is determined that a
physician’s care is needed for an injury, the parent
will be notified immediately. If the parent cannot be
reached, persons on the registration forms will be
called.
The Camp Supervisor will take whatever steps are
necessary to obtain emergency medical care. These
steps may include, but are not limited to:
1. Attempt to contact parent or guardian.
2. Attempt to contact person listed on child’s
registration forms.
3. If a parent cannot be contacted or the injury
appears serious, 911 may be called and, upon
recommendation of paramedics, the child may
be transported to an emergency hospital in an
emergency vehicle.
If transported in an emergency vehicle, the cost is at

INSURANCE PROTECTION AVAILABLE
EVALUATIONS & QUALITY CONTROL
Since the PVPUSD does not provide accident
medical insurance for school related injuries, it
makes available a variety of affordable insurance
plans to help in the event of an accident.
PV Kids’ Corner is dedicated to offering a high
quality, well-defined and flexible summer
experience. To assist in ensuring program quality,
we will ask you to complete periodic evaluation
surveys. Results will be compiled and used in the
continuing development of the program.
Brochures and registration forms for student
insurance are available by request at the PV Kids’
Corner and District business offices.
MEDICATIONS
Please speak with staff in advance if your child
must take any type of medication, including overthe-counter medications, while at PV Kids’ Corner.
Parents and the child’s doctor must complete
District form #F-1070 and bring the medication
in its original package before it can be
administered by staff.
The medication bottle provided by the parent
must have the prescription label, complete with
the pupil’s name and doctor’s instructions.
Over-the-counter medications must be in the
original labeled container.
Children may not keep any medication, including
over-the-counter medications, on their person or in
a backpack with the exception of an inhaler and/or
Epi-Pen as authorized by a physician and a
completed District form #F-1070.
A new form must be completed each school year
and new form(s) must be completed whenever the
medication regimen is changed.
ABOUT OUR STAFF
All staff and substitutes are employees of the Palos
Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and are
highly qualified to provide excellent PV Kids’
Corner care.
They participate in an ongoing program of inservice training, workshops by professional
organizations, or college classes. All staff meet
District requirements for education and experience
in children’s programs.
A Summer Camp Supervisor oversees the Section
Supervisors, who are responsible for planning and
implementing the daily activities for each of the
three Camp sections. Administrative support is
received from the Recreation/Community Programs
Department Director.
While surveys offer a “control” in the evaluation
process, please don’t wait for a survey to tell us
your thoughts. Feel free to contact the PV Kids’
Corner business office if you have additional
concerns or comments.
EMERGENCIES
In the event of an emergency or natural disaster,
such as earthquake or flood, the following
procedures will be in effect:
1. During the school day, all children will follow
the school site disaster plan.
2. Before or after the regular school day or during
school break programs, all children will be kept
at the center until the parent or other authorized
person picks them up. A person authorized by
the parent to pick up the child will be requested
to present identification before the child is
released.
3. Should it be necessary to evacuate a center, the
evacuation site will be posted on the center
door and every effort will be made to contact
parents and guardians.
4. Staff members will remain with the children
until they are released to the parent or
authorized person.
5. Each school is equipped with sufficient supplies
to accommodate children in the event of an
emergency.
6. In the event of unforeseen circumstances
(power outages, etc.), a parent may be called to
pick up the child early.
7. For your child’s safety, please keep registration
forms current to assist staff in emergencies.
