OAKPARKAREA!
The Village of Oak Park, less
than 10 miles from downtown Chicago, is the visitor’s
gateway to a distinctive world
of 21 suburbs in western Cook
County.
Oak Park and some of these
suburbs began on the American frontier in the 1830s. From the first settlers on,
people have come to this area to find the best life offered. Thousands gave their
best back, including architect Frank Lloyd Wright; Nobel Laureate & Pulitzer
Prize winning author Ernest Hemingway; Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of
TARZAN; and world-renowned choreographer Doris Humphrey.
Visit Wright’s Home & Studio where Wright and his associates developed a new
American architecture: Prairie style. More than one-third of Wright buildings are
listed on the National Register of Historic Places or are in a National Historic
District, including Unity Temple. The suburbs of Oak Park and River Forest are
the epicenter of the Chicago area’s Frank Lloyd Wright collection, with over 25
structures in the neighborhood of the Home & Studio alone.
Visitors and residents today will find the Area’s many attractions, shops,
restaurants and accommodations diverse and priced to meet their budget.
From national retailers and privately owned boutiques to antique shops and
restaurants for any taste, the Oak Park Area is an ideal place for your family or
group to visit.
Stay at a hotel or a B&B in Oak Park, or in our area near O’Hare International
Airport. Access is easy with major expressways serving the area: I-88, I-290 and
I-294. Visit by train, car or public transportation.
All this and more can be found in this Visitor Guide. Welcome to the Oak Park
Area!

The Berwyn Route 66 Museum is not quite what you might be expecting. Aside
from hundreds of Route 66 related artifacts, there’s also a wall of art hubcaps,
a bell from the original LaVergne School that predates Route 66, an electric
vehicle charging station in front of the museum and — for good measure —
an original window sill from Abraham Lincoln’s Springfield mansion, which was
a stone’s throw from Route 66’s eventual location. The museum also provides
gallery space for the Berwyn Arts Council. Several times every year the Museum
hosts shows for Berwyn and area artists. In addition, the Museum has several
ongoing restoration projects including cars from the Spindle Sculpture that appeared in Cermak Plaza from 1989 until 2008. Open Monday through Friday
9 am to 5 pm; weekends by appointment.

This world-renowned complex served as Wright’s private residence and studio
from 1889 to 1909-the first 20 years of his career. Wright used his home as an
architectural laboratory, trying out design concepts before sharing them with
clients. Here, he raised six children with his first wife, Catherine Tobin, and
designed such famous buildings as the Robie House, Larkin Building and Unity
Temple. With 25 Wright-designed buildings in the neighborhood surrounding
the Home and Studio, Oak Park is an outdoor museum of architectural history.

Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970, Unity Temple is Frank
Lloyd Wright’s only surviving public
building from his Prairie period. It
was designed and constructed In
1905-1908. Limited by a modest
budget and an urban site, Wright created an innovative design and used unconventional materials to produce one of the most sophisticated accomplishments
of his early career. Constructed of exposed, poured-in-place reinforced concrete,
Unity Temple was one of the first churches to be built from a material reserved
for factories and warehouses. Wright designed two separate high, sky lit spaces
- one for worship and one for the congregation’s social gatherings - connected
by a low, central entry foyer. Self-guided interior tours also available. Groups of

beautiful works. Over 80 landmark structures representing 144 years of iconic
American architecture dot the village. Come and experience this very special
American place, a place with a hidden history that may surprise you. Two-hour
