Our Distinguished Judges
Gary L Andersen– Specialty
As a child I showed cattle through 4-H, and also judged cattle, sheep and pigs. My
introduction to the dog world happened after I married Bev. We purchased a pet Samoyed then a Gordon Setter who became oversized. Following my show career in cattle, I became interested in showing dogs. Our first serious show dogs were English
Setters. We had a few English Setters before we found another Gordon that we liked.
In the late 70’s, we also acquired our first English Cocker. Once the English Cockers
came into our lives, the English Setters slowly left. We had our first Gordon litter in
1978. This was shortly after we had relocated to Tucson, Arizona from Denver, Colorado. Through the years we have owned all four Setters. We have also had an Afghan, a Briard, a black Standard Poodle and Smooth Coated Fox Terriers, but our
focus has been with the Gordons and English Cockers. We acquired our first Irish Red
and White Setter ten years ago, and have since added two Smooth Coated Fox Terriers and had three Smooth litters. I served 6 years on the National Board of the Gordon
Setter Club of America and am past president of Scottsdale Dog Fanciers All Breed
Club. I was instrumental in starting the Arizona Sporting Dog Club, which recently had
its sixth show. I have been president for five years and the show chairperson for its six
shows. In January 2011, I was appointed the Judges’ Education Chairperson for the
Gordon Setter Club of America. In 2012, I was re-elected back onto the Gordon Setter
National Board. I received my Judging license in 1993, initially approved for Irish, English, Gordon Setters, English Cocker Spaniels and All Breed Junior Showmanship. I
now am licensed for the Sporting Group, Non-Sporting Group, Whippets, Afghans,
thirteen working breeds, Misc. Breeds and Best in Show. I have judged in Australia,
China, Columbia, Ireland and Canada.
Susan Henderson- Sweepstakes
I am deeply honored to be returning to WestWorld to judge Sweepstakes and Veteran
Sweepstakes for the Grand Canyon State club. I can’t believe it has been seven years
since I had the pleasure to judge at this wonderful Specialty. I've always been a big
dog person, having been raised from diapers through college with Great Danes. While
Danes are an impressive breed, nothing compares to the moment when one first lays
eyes on the striking Bernese Mountain Dog. I know we all can recite vivid stories of
that moment; for me it was Los Angeles 1984. From that day forward, I longed for the
day when I could love a Berner of my own. After Phil and I were married in 1993, we
spent many years admiring a photo on our fridge until Coach, our first Bernese Mountain Dog, arrived in 1997 (naturally after we purchased a suitable house and SUV for
him) .I began showing Bernese in conformation in 1999. As a novice exhibitor, I was
often confused and frustrated when my well-built, good-moving bitch was not rewarded
in the ring. So I began seeking out breeder judges to mentor me to develop my eye for
proper breed type and structure. As confidence in my knowledge and skills strengthened, I began evaluating litters for friends, briefly dabbling in breeding and periodically
judging Sweepstakes at various regional specialties and supported entries across the
country. 18 years and several dogs later, I am still a student of the breed and am absolutely in love with Berners, despite their myriad health problems and often short life
spans. Besides owner-handling our dogs to their Championships (and serving as
Sherpa to Phil as he put titles on the other end), I have spent the majority of my time in
the breed actively serving the BMDCA in several capacities, including Specialty Coordinator, Assistant Show Chair at two National Specialties, and current manager of the
Online Store. Our dogs give so much to us, it is very rewarding to give back, not-tomention the fringe benefit of the priceless friendships forged along the way.Thank you
for the honor of judging both your youngsters and amazing veterans. I pledge to give
each exhibit my full attention and reward those that best typify the standard of our
beautiful breed.
