CEO WORKSHOP – HOW TO BUILD A
GAME CHANGING/FOCUS-DRIVEN COMPANY
The Generative Organization: Going From
Reactive to Inspired Performance
Bill Schwartz, CEO Alliance
If your commitment is to execute strategically
in 2015… first remove the source of reactive
behavior.
“When even a little reactive behavior
exists, it can wipe out your competitive
advantage while diminishing productivity
and profitability. Any effort to execute strategically – whether to
increase sales or improve quality and service – without removing
the source of reactive behavior will, like a vicious circle, consume
everything/one in its path.”
Leave your old ideas about organizational leadership behind and
build a focus-driven company – One that is totally Generative.
Internationally recognized expert in the design and implementation of organizational growth strategies, Bill’s innovative work in
building learning organizations, change, leadership and quality has
made him a sought after and popular speaker. Let this master of
organizational transformation help you discover how you can
control your company’s destiny.
What other CEO’s are saying about Bill’s workshop book:
“I read Bill’s book 3 times, attended this workshop and after 6 months
of implementing his concepts, I was able to reduce my head count from
200 to 150 people, reduce my inventory by 50%, increase my annualized
inventory turn from 4 to 9 times and increase gross margins by 6 points.
We went to the mountains a second time with Bill this year and have built
an entire game-changing strategy to propel our future growth and
excitement.”
Kevin Melendy, President, Spectral Response, Lawrenceville, GA
“Good to Great is an illuminating historical research study of companies.
It is a great book. The Generative Organization is the How To manual to
achieve that Greatness.”
Jerry Scher, PRISCO, Atlanta, GA
“This is a CEO’s road map to success. It blends theory, pragmatism, and
principles with remarkable clarity. It addresses the deeply rooted cause of
recurring difficulties and how to remove them so the company can grow
and achieve competitive advantage.”
Sid Kirschner, Former Chairman and CEO, National Services Industries
and Northside Hospital, Atlanta, GA
“This book is full of the wisdom essential for a leader who wants to do it
right and correct all past wrongs. For any leader who wants to know
how to navigate their organization through change and get out of
reactive behavior to achieve greatness and competitive advantage,
this is your book.”
Larry Callahan, CEO, Patillo Construction
“Bill’s processes described in the book actually transformed not only me as
a leader, but my entire organization. Generative principles brought my
company alive, released its energy and aligned my people to accomplish
real, lasting and sustainable change.”
Norm Day, CEO/Chairman of the Board, SenCorp, Cincinnati, OH
Includes copy of Bill’s book titled “The Generative Organization - From
Reactive Behavior to Inspired Performance.” Registration Option E.

“Current knowledge is nothing more than rapidly changing facts.”
Dr. Robert Hutchins, President, University of Chicago
There’s no doubt the entire horticulture industry is experiencing monumental change in how
business gets done. Since new ideas are often built from previous elements, this workshop will
uncover relationships new and old waiting to be revealed through brand new patterns.
You’ll be participating in a journey addressing the skills you’ll need to deal with a future of “rapidly
changing facts”. You’ll work hard... you’ll share ideas... you’ll laugh... you’ll learn a lot about yourself,
your company and your customers. But most of all, you’ll leave with a renewed confidence of what it
will take to prepare your garden center for 2015 and beyond.
There’s a brave new world ahead for all of us… this session will identify the tools you’ll need to arrive
at the destination you’ve been searching for. Registration Option I.

Introductions: Searching the Globe
for the Best of the New
Dr. Michael Dirr, The University of Georgia
There is not a corner of the earth from which someone has not
discovered a new plant. For horticulturists, the world is our campus.
Plants arrive from distant shores and our personal gardens. The next
exciting plant is only an observation away. The gardening and nursery
professions are richer because of the bounty. In this lecture, I will discuss
the trees, shrubs and perhaps wispy Dr. Armitage perennials that make
our Southeastern gardens more beautiful.
9:45 - 10:40 Native Plants Rock!
Dr. Carol Robacker, The University of Georgia
If you’ve always been curious about the intricate world of ornamental
breeding, you cannot miss this talk! Dr. Robacker will share technical
details about her breeding program on landscape plants. Her work
with the native species Indian Pink (Spigelia sp.), little bluestem and
deciduous azalea has yielded exciting results. But she won’t stop with
the natives! Other species she will showcase are vitex, abelia, and pearl
bush. You will have an opportunity to play an active role and give Dr.
Robacker your “take” on each plant through an anonymous digital
system on various plant features and get to see everyone’s input in
real-time! An hour of fun and learning for all y’all plant lovers!
10:40 - 11:00 Break
11:00 - 12:00 Flavor, Fragrance & Medicine from the Garden
Dr. Bodie Pennisi, The University of Georgia
Consumer interest in medicinal plants has been growing, offering a
new niche for landscapers – the urban medicinal garden. What folks
may not know is that many of the plants we already have been using
have medicinal applications. Educating yourself and your customers
about these plants and their ornamental and medicinal properties, will
give you a competitive edge.

the Green Industry in the coming decades.

Managing Mature Trees, Daniel S. Bauer, Arbor Equity
From construction addition impacts to preventative insect control. Older trees need ongoing
care to protect them and promote health and vigor. Will address the value of mature trees to
property value. We will discuss also what measures can be done to increase sales on
properties by including mature tree maintenance.
2:30 Abiotic Turf Problems-Non-living Causes of Turf Decline and Damage,
Steve Pettis, UGA Extension, Rockdale County
This class will cover all of those ‘other’ problems in the lawn. Weeds, diseases and insects are
often problems in our turf. But what about the non-living causes of turf issues? Compaction,

WINTER
GREEN 2015
Whenever someone tries to make a decision, they
always ask themselves 5 basic questions: who, what, when,
where, and why. In fact, you’re probably wondering those
questions about WINTERGREEN, especially if you have
never been to our show. We have taken the liberty to answer
those questions for you.

anyone in the agriculture/horticulture world. We have
people from all over the southeast and even a few from the
northeast regions of the United States to exhibit in our large

WHY JOIN?
GGIA is excited to
announce the launch
of our redesigned
website with a fresh,
new interface,
improved navigation,
and expanded
functionality!
Check it out at
www.ggia.org!
The Georgia Green Industry Association (GGIA) is a statewide
trade association whose mission is to promote and advance
the economic, lifestyle and environmental benefits of Georgia
horticulture for our members, our families and our communities.
Through education, legislative monitoring, certification exams,
trade shows, and conferences to the horticulture-related industries
in the State, the GGIA is deeply rooted in the industry and
continues to grow for the betterment of the industry’s future.
With members from the landscape trade, irrigation contractors,
wholesale nursery growers, greenhouse operators, retail garden
centers and allied sales companies, GGIA serves as an umbrella
association for the entire horticulture industry.
NETWORKING... is a major key to success in any
business and GGIA offers these invaluable networking
opportunities throughout the year in the form of Local
Chapter meetings and education classes that are spread
throughout the state, and our two large annual events, the
Roundup and WinterGreen, with the WINTERGREEN trade
show being the largest of these events!
WINTERGREEN... the Annual Trade Show and
Conference for the Green Industry by the Green Industry.
All sectors of our industry are represented: green goods,
hard goods, and allied products. WinterGreen offers a
diverse group of education tracts taught by industry leading
educators and professionals to draw in a broad spectrum of
potential customers for the vendors.

and education opportunities that apply to your region of
the state. Some of these events are educational, some are
designed to assist with a regional issue, and some are even
purely social! Whatever the reason for the meeting, the
Chapters offer the opportunity to get to know your neighboring companies which can open up new prospects for your
company.
GGIA is divided into nine chapters (by region) so that every member
has a chance to participate in meetings held by individual chapters
that cover current events, up-to date horticulture and agriculture
information, DOT regulations, etc. All meetings are open to the public,
and some meetings even offer CEUs.
Legislative Efforts... GGIA’s Director of Legislative
With all the events GGIA holds, networking with other industry
leaders, potential customers, and supply sources is made easy.
Affairs, Chris Butts, works with our other staff and association
members to monitor legislative and regulatory policy
that impacts the industry. Immigration, water, taxes and
regulatory fees continue to be a hot issue. At the national
level, GGIA partners with AmericanHort to coordinate efforts
on Federal Issues.
Education & Certification... GGIA works closely with
UGA, its Extension Program, and other Horticulture Education
Programs throughout the state to ensure that Green Industry
Professionals have access to the latest and most pertinent
information. The education tracts offered through GGIA are
unmatched in the state, so much so that even the other
industry trade shows in Georgia rely on GGIA to set up and
provide the education opportunities at their events.
GGIA has a dedicated legislative relations staff focusing on issues that
impact YOUR business.
GGIA gives timely and weekly updates on industry news and
compliance issues with E-Newsletters and Legislative Updates.
From legislation to economic problems, GGIA and its members stand
with a united voice on the issues that impact ALL segments of the
industry.
Georgia’s premier horticulture conference, the WINTERGREEN show,
