Church of the Good Shepherd Week of January 25, 2015 - Third Sunday In Ordinary Time They abandoned their nets and fallowed Him! 2 Pastor’s PerspecƟve CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN LOS ANGELES FULFILL A UNIQUE AND CRITICAL ROLE FOR FAMILIES, COMMUNITIES AND SOCIETY. This week is Catholic Schools Week, celebrated throughout the United States. We here at Good Shepherd are justly proud of our school - both its heritage of service to our local Catholic community over many years, and our present success as a paragon of Catholic identity and academic excellence. We are here for one purpose only: to create and serve our future generations of Catholic leaders. We are an integral part of the Catholic school system of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which comprises more than 200 Catholic schools. For more than 160 years, investments in these schools have yielded remarkable returns by producing moral, successful leaders who give back to their Church and to their communities. These schools benefit everyone – Catholic and non-Catholic, immigrant and U.S.-born, affluent and poor, and even those who never step foot on their grounds, but reap the rewards of the economic and social contributions Catholic school graduates make in every sector. The primary purpose of Catholic schools in the 21st century is to evangelize, educate and form future Catholic leaders, whether defined by the positions of responsibility and influence they hold or by the moral, ethical and values-driven way in which they lead their lives. We do this by educating the whole person – spiritual, academic, physical and social. By infusing an understanding and practice of Catholic knowledge and values throughout the curriculum and in all school activities, Catholic schools nurture mind, body and soul. Through quality academic instruction, religious and moral development and a focus on service to others, graduates leave as well-rounded, faith-filled individuals poised to assume leadership roles in society and their Church communities. Catholic schools help students to grow in their spirituality through liturgical and sacramental formation. In that way, Catholic schools serve as an investment in the future success of the Church, helping to sustain the Catholic faith and Catholic influence. While the focus is on committed Catholic families, these schools also welcome non-Catholic students, who make up approximately 15 percent of the overall enrollment in Archdiocese of Los Angeles Catholic schools (and in some schools as much as 50 percent), thereby contributing to ecumenical and interfaith understanding and to a greater appreciation of the Church. Our Catholic schools are a blessing in the lives of our students and their families. They also play a vital role in the life of our city and society. We serve 80,000 students. That makes us the fourth largest school system in California. More than one-third of our students come from families living below the poverty line; nearly 70 percent are ethnic minorities. We are bringing hope to all families and inspiring all our children to strive to reach for their highest potential — to become the men and women that God created them to be. Each year our schools are graduating young people who know and love God and who are well prepared to become faithful citizens and leaders in our society. I encourage you to learn more about our Catholic school, even if you do not have children in it. Any support you can give is a high-yield investment in the future of our faith and our society. I love you. Fr. "Wisdom of the heart means being with our brothers and sisters. Time spent with the sick is holy time. It is a way of praising God who conforms us to the image of his Son, who “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:28). Jesus himself said: “I am among you as one who serves” (Lk 22:27). Wisdom of the heart means going forth from ourselves towards our brothers and sisters. Occasionally, our world forgets the special value of time spent at the bedside of the sick. Since we are in such a rush caught up as we are in a frenzy of doing, of producing, we forget about giving ourselves freely, taking care of others, being responsible for others. Behind this attitude there is often a lukewarm faith which has forgotten the Lord’s words: “You did it unto me’ (Mt 25:40)." (Pope Francis, "Sapientia Cordis - the Wisdom of the Heart" Dec. 30, 2014) To mark the World Day of Prayer in our parish, and in response to Pope Francis' call to join in solidarity with those who are sick, we will be including an Anointing of the Sick ritual at the Saturday 5:30 p.m. Mass on February 7th and at all Masses on Sunday, February 8th. We extend a special invitation to all those who are sick and usually homebound, requesting that families, friends, neighbors make an extra effort to bring them to Mass that weekend. Receiving the grace of God, while surrounded and embraced by the prayer of the community, can often be a very healing time for those who are ill and elderly. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to see and feel how important they are to our community and to know that they are always remembered in our thoughts and prayers. Spiritual DirecƟon Ministry A way to draw closer to God Spiritual direction is an ancient ministry, a unique one-to-one relationship in which a trained person assists another person in the search for an ever closer union of love with God. Directors listen carefully to the unfolding of directees’ lives, to help them discern the ways in which God is leading them. The practice of spiritual direction consists much more of “holy listening” rather than direction in the sense of offering guidance or direct advice. If you would like to find someone who can assist you in deepening your relationship with God, contact Sr. Virginia at (310) 285-5425 who can put you in touch with a qualified director. 2015 Year of Consecrated Life World Day World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated in the Church on Monday, February 2, 2015 and in parishes on the weekend of February 7-8, 2015. Please pray for all those who have made commitments to the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God's gift of their vocation. Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life: O God, throughout the ages You have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give You thanks for these courageous witnesses of faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to You. Continue to enrich Your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Did You Know? Please refer to the Scripture passages in your own Bible. Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Next Sunday, February 1, 2015 SPELLBINDING AUTHORITY Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 This passage contains a nutshell summary of the whole mission of Jesus: to free humankind from enslavement to the forces of evil, which he does by the power of his word — his is God’s Word-made-flesh (Jn 1:14). To use this passage to argue the pros and cons of personal demons and diabolical possession risks missing the point: all humanity is in the grip of the power of evil without Christ. This first miracle of Jesus in Mark’s account climaxes the introduc on to his Gospel. Read from the beginning of the gospel up to this point. V 1 gives the tle, an unmistakable iden fica on of Jesus. John the Bap st, as herald, preaches repentance and prepara on (vv 2-8). Jesus embarks on his ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit (vv 9-11), struggles with the forces that would distort his ministry and run it off true course (vv 12-13), and sets off to con nue and fulfill what John had begun (vv 14-15). He gathers disciples (vv 16-20), and he teaches (vv 21-22). No ce that Jesus does not seek out the possessed man. The demon is threatened by the very presence of Jesus and his word, and confronts him. In its fearful rejec on of Jesus, the force of evil itself witnesses to him (v 24). Jesus is not asked by anybody to cure the man, he simply order the demon to release him. V 27 relates his word of teaching with his word of power —it is one and the same word. Those who hear his word experience his power. His teaching cannot be separated from his person. He is what he teaches. First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-22 Although these words are put into the mouth of Moses as lawgiver, they actually date from much later in Jewish history. The en re book of Deuteronomy is a compila on of laws and tradi ons formulated during the monarchy (tenth to sixth centuries, B.C.E.) and finally codified around the end of that period. The descrip on of the four major offices of Israelite society (judges, 17:8-13; kings, 17:14-20; priests, 18:1-8; and prophets, 18:9-22) presents an ideal of social order that seldom occurred in reality, so there was always hope for a be er future. The prophet is depicted as being God’s true representa ve, as opposed to the falsity of pagan oracles. The prophet was seen to have the power to proclaim God’s will in a way that would bring about the deeds that the words signified. Thus Jesus is the fulfillment of the true meaning of prophet. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9 A sound with no one to hear it is no sound at all. Even the voice of God, spoken through the prophets, through his Son, through his Church, has no power unless freely received — heard and understood, taken to heart and acted upon. And so we must pray that we will hear his voice when he speaks. Response: "If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts." Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul’s purpose here is not to advise whether or not to marry. He was obviously unmarried himself — as a traveling missionary, he had no fixed home, and so marriage and family would have been impossible (see v 8). However he regarded marriage very highly, calling it a sign of the union between Christ and his Church (see Eph 5:21-33). Here Paul holds up an ideal of detachment from the things and ways of the world, us ing virginity as a sign of this detachment, not as its only means of fulfillment. No ma er what our state in life, the important thing is to keep our eyes firmly fixed on what is beyond, and not let ourselves become helplessly entangled in the passing concerns of the here and now. QuesƟons for thought, discussion, and prayer: 1. How do words have power? What does this say about the power of God’s word in your life? 2. How and where do you see the power evil at work in your own life? How can the power of Jesus counter it?
