Mechanical Design, Fabrication, assembly, inspection and
supply of Alignment and support system for LEHIPA Cavities
Alignment and support system for LEHIPA Cavities (ASSLC): The Alignment and
support system that will be developed under this PO will be used in the Low Energy High
Intensity Proton Accelerator (LEHIPA) cavities.
Support system provides a specific position to an object as well as provides mechanism for
movement to change its coordinates. Whether it is machining operations, optics or nuclear
experiments there is need of high precision locating system of varying nature according to
need. Six-strut support is one of the popular methods which is versatile, accurate, and easy
to install and use. LEHIPA cavities require stringent alignment and may need frequent
adjustment. It needs to be supported at a fixed position accurately. The necessary design
parameters are mechanical strength, positioning, alignment along beam path, resolution
and range of movement. The design must fulfill all the given needs.
The LEHIPA cavities need support, accurate alignment and adjustment in position. Six-strut
support is very commonly used support system. The main objective is to design strut which
1. Provide support (without yielding/ buckling) to the LEHIPA cavities.
2. Raise the center of the LEHIPA cavities to 1.2 m (nominal) from the ground.
3. Give a alignment range of ± 10 mm in orthogonal directions and 2o in rotation.
4. Give a resolution of approximately 100μm (per 1/4th revolution of the collar.

Based on the reference inputs that are provided by the BARC, supplier shall prepare the
mechanical design and solid model of ASSLC using solid-works. Manufacturing drawings
shall be generated using this solid-works model. Before initiating manufacturing activities,
these drawings and models must be submitted to BARC for approval.
Procurement of raw materials from the reputed manufacturer as per, but not limiting to, the
Error! Reference source not found. for all the components of the ASSLC has to be
done by supplier. (No free issue material to be provided by the indenter).
Testing of all the raw material as per the relevant ASTM standards. All test reports must be
submitted to the indenter for the approval of material.
Precision machining of all the components of the ASSLC. Machining should to be done ONLY
on the high-precision, CNC machines. Components are listed below:

All the components of the ASSLC should be in stress-relived condition. Any operation, as
and when required to achieve the same shall be the supplier’s responsibility.
Corrosion resistant painting has to done on Frame (mild steel).
The capacity of each support wheel should be 250kg or more.
Metrology of all individual ASSLC components using a CMM.
Assembling of all components of ASSLC should be demonstrated in front of indenter.
The supplier is responsible for safe storage of all components in all intermediate stages,
particularly with a view to avoiding nicks and scratches on the surfaces of the ASSLC
components, and also to avoid surface contamination.

Chemical composition test (by government approved lab) of CF-Rotatable Blank Flange as
per the relevant ASTM standards to be done on all the flanges to confirm their grade and
test report (of all the flanges) to be submitted for approval.
Transportation of finished ASSLC has to be done to BARC, Trombay by the supplier.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
Acceptance of each six struts support system segment will be in several steps, as detailed
below:
a. Drawings. All pre-machining / final drawings must have approval of the indenter before any
machining can be taken up.
b. Machining of struts. Once struts are machined, its functionality will be checked in the
presence of the indenter. Only when indenter confirms that all the geometrical dimensions
and surface finish have been maintained as per drawings, the components can be accepted for
further assembly.
c. Machining of frame, SS plate and other mounting assembly components. After machining
of these components the supplier will provide the inspection report to the indenter for
clearance. Once the indenter confirms that all the geometrical dimensions have been
maintained as per drawings, then the components can be accepted for alignment.
III.
MATERIALS
All the materials used for this work shall be fresh and of standard quality conforming to
relevant ASTM standards and shall be procured from the reputed suppliers only. In no case
reworked, refined or repaired materials shall be used as the starting material for any fabrication
step. The materials undergoing fabrication procedures shall be protected against
damage/distortion by mishandling, scratches, denting or effects of weather.
Fasteners and fixture materials
All the fasteners for use in this work shall be made of stainless steel materials conforming to
IS-1367/ASTM A193 and from high-strength grade.
IV.
Quality Control
1. Quality Control for Materials
All materials procured and used by the Supplier shall conform to the applicable material
specifications. Materials conformity shall be checked with the accompanying mill and laboratory
test reports/certificates and if required, additional checks shall be conducted by accredited
laboratories.
2. Quality Control for dimensional accuracy & surface finish
Reference temperature for specified dimensions of ASSLC is 250C. For inspection
measurements, the read out values shall be adjusted to this requirement.

supply of Alignment and support system for LEHIPA Cavities
(a) Dimensional accuracy of the ASSLC components shall be checked on a calibrated coordinate
measurement machine (CMM), of accuracy better than 10% of the specified tolerance.
(b) Surface finish of the components shall be checked with the calibrated roughness checking
tester/meter for roughness value 1micron Ra of to those specified in the approved drawings.
The measuring device shall be calibrated/ checked with the use of standard surface finish
gages.
V.
QUALIFICATION OF SUPPLIER
Tender will be process in two parts. Supplier shall submit the technical offer and commercial offer
in two separate envelops. (Please note that technical offer shall have no commercial clauses. In case,
Supplier fails to observe the same, its offer will be summarily rejected.)
It is essential for Supplier to have the experience of developing high precision support and
alignment system for accelerator applications. In this connection, supplier shall submit copy of
purchase order along with the technical offer. In case, Supplier fails to observe the same, its offer
