Date: January 22, 2015 E-Newsletter DID YOU KNOW? “¡Palante Siempre Palante!: The Young Lords” January 22; 7pm at Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, Room A201 About ¡PALANTE, SIEMPRE PALANTE! The Young Lords, produced, written and co-directed by Iris Morales. In the midst of the African American liberation struggle, protests to end the war in Vietnam and the women's movement for equality, Puerto Rican and Latino/a communities organized for economic, racial and social justice. From the streets of Chicago to the barrios of New York City and other urban centers, the Young Lords emerged in 1968 as a leading revolutionary voice for Puerto Ricans in the United States. Through militant actions, they brought attention to the dire conditions facing Puerto Rican communities and to the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Founded in Chicago, the Young Lords joined in solidarity with the Black Panther Party, the Brown Berets and others to create the first Rainbow Coalition. Inspired by the Young Lords, Puerto Rican youth organized branches in major cities across the country. ¡Palante, Siempre, Palante! The Young Lords captures this vibrant and dynamic period through the experience of the New York Chapter. Archival footage, photographs, music and on-camera interviews with former members detail the organization’s vision, activities and legacy. Produced, written and co-directed by Iris Morales, the award-winning film premiered in 1996 on national public television. Ms. Morales was herself a member of the Young Lords for five years. The documentary has also screened at film festivals across the United States and the Caribbean and continues to be widely used by students, educators and activists in classrooms, colleges and community venues.
