If you are worshipping with us for the first time, the following suggestions may be helpful to you: Put your bulletin in the back of the hymnal. A panel will stick out on the right side with the Order of Service. By doing this, both hands are free to find the liturgy and hymns. Large print bulletins and hearing devices are available. Please ask an usher for assistance. The Music Room, the room to your right before entering the sanctuary, is available for parents with small children who need to step out during the service. The service is televised in the Music Room. The time before the service is a time of prayer and preparation to receive the Lord’s gifts of salvation. In addition to prayer, look over the readings and the words to the hymns during this preparation time. Please turn off all cell phones and refrain from taking pictures during the service. Thank you. MARK 1:14-15 Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God. And saying, ” The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” To repent means to turn away from sins and our former way of thinking and turn toward belief in God and His Gospel of grace and mercy. The whole Christian life is one of repentance and faith – where is God calling you to repent today? How is He calling you to deeper your faith? Please pray for all of our District’s teachers, students and families as they identify the many blessings that come to them through our support of Christian education; preparing our children for this life and the next. Jonah 3:1–5, 10 1Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. . . .10When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. “believed God,” as He spoke to them through His prophet, “they turned from their evil way” and were spared “the disaster that He had said He would do to them” (Jonah 3:5, 10). St. Paul also warns that “the appointed time has grown very short” (1 Cor. 7:29). Therefore, while we live in this world and deal with it, we are not to cling to it, nor put our trust in it, for “the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor. 7:31). Rather, give “your undivided devotion to the Lord” (1 Cor. 7:35). When our Lord Jesus Christ comes and is proclaimed in the Gospel, “the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:14–15). Therefore, He still calls men and sends them to become “fishers of men” with the net of that Gospel (Mark 1:17). 1 Corinthians 7:29–31 29This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Top Ten Reasons to go to Church: #4 To grow in the knowledge of the Bible, God's Word - "This reason is related to the previous one but is not redundant. Here I am responding to a common excuse: 'I don't need to go to church to hear the Word; I can read the Bible on my own.' On the one hand, private study of God's Word is wonderful. Would that all believers had a daily diet of God's Word! But private study of Scripture must not be a substitute for hearing the preached Word. Why not? There are two reasons, the first theological, the second practical. Because the pastor, who holds the divinely appointed preaching office, is, by God's will, the chief teacher of God's Word, the one through whom Christ Himself speaks (see Luke 10:16; Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Timothy 4:13-16; 2 Timothy 4:1-5; Hebrews 13:17). The pastor has been blessed with the gift of teaching. Furthermore, he has gone through extensive schooling and study so as to become an "specialist" in God's Word (though he also is always growing and learning). He has learned Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. He has spent many years in prayer and study learning God's Word. Why not benefit from his area of expertise? I find it ironic that though we are willing to acknowledge and turn to selfproclaimed experts in every branch of human knowledge, we do not see the need for an expert in the Word of God. In other words, in so many areas of knowledge we freely admit that we lack the expertise to form judgments and we seek out the experts to help us. We turn to doctors for our health, CPAs for our taxes, auto mechanics for our vehicles, psychologists for our problems, etc. However, when it comes to the Word of God, some apparently know it all. Yes, every Christian can and should read the Bible. Yes, the people of God are to judge the teaching of the pastor. I am not promoting clergy tyranny. I am warning against lay anarchy." Pastor Richard Bucher Mark 1:14–20 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” 16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. Notes on Today’s Service Treasures from the Church: “Our pastors often accompany God’s Word of blessing with the sign of the cross when they dismiss us at the communion table, for example, or when they place God’s Name upon us as we depart the Divine Service: 'The LORD bless you and keep you, the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you, the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you [+] peace.' Only a gesture, you say? A gesture, yes but certainly not an empty gesture! For baptized believers, the sign of the cross is an emblem packed with meaning. It is the visual reminder of who we are – and whose we are: one of Christ’s very own, marked by His cross. Our forgiveness stands forever sure, signed and sealed with His own blood. If we choose, we may exercise the freedom we have in Christ to “grab” that sign our pastor makes over us and claim it publicly as our very own, tracing its outline from forehead down to heart, then shoulder to shoulder and back to heart again in token that we have been redeemed by Christ the crucified.” The Rev. Harold Senkbeil, Executive Director for Spiritual Care - Doxology Today’s Reading: When “the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time,” sending him to preach judgment against the great city of Nineveh, “Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord” (Jonah 3:3). By this preaching, the people were brought to repentance. Because they Sermon: Few are called to be public fishers of men – ministers of reconciliation, as preachers of God’s good news. But, all of us are called to the good news of God’s forgiveness of our sins in Jesus’ name. The Lord beckoned Simon and Andrew away from their nets and James and John away from their father’s boat to train them as His ambassadors and representatives, fishers of men. But, some fishermen He first called to faith and then sent back home. We might welcome a call from the Lord that would summon us to leave behind our nets and follow Him. It might be nice to abandon schedules and our routine obligations in exchange for some exciting, globetrotting mission somewhere else. Yet, for most of us, the Lord’s call to discipleship means faithfully tending the nets that we have been given in our homes and various vocations. LOVE IN ACTION TREE: The Love Comes Down at Christmas tree in the lounge changing!!. It is now a “Love in Action”” tree for this winter.
