A Message from our Pastor
Last Saturday 11 permanent deacons were ordained at the
Cathedral of St. Thomas More for the Diocese of
Arlington. Two of them are from All Saints Parish: Deacon
Rafael “Ralph” Goldsmith and Deacon Jim Van de Voorde.
Bishop Loverde has assigned them to All Saints Parish to
assist in diaconal ministries. We offer them our heart-felt
congratulations and prayers at this time.
The 2nd Vatican Council said that the ministry of a deacon
is similar to but different from that of a priest or bishop. A
deacon is ordained and missioned by Christ through the
bishop to minister to the needy and the poor and to be a
minister of Word and Sacrament, working in obedience to
his bishop and in close fraternal cooperation with priests.
While all Christians are called to serve others, the deacon is
an official sign of this service and he solemnly promises to
be a living example of such service for others.
The Deacon’s ministry of word, liturgy, and charity may
include:
Word: proclaiming the Gospel, preaching at Mass,
catechesis, evangelization, and sacramental preparation
Liturgy: serving at the Eucharistic Table, solemnly
baptizing, witnessing marriages, bringing viaticum to
the dying, and presiding over funerals and burials
Charity: serving the poor and marginalized, visiting the
sick and imprisoned, ministering to the dying.
Also, this past week, Father Frank Ready died. He is one of
our diocesan priests and was ordained a priest in 1949. Fr.
Ready has been a priest for 55 years. He was the founding
pastor of both Nativity Parish, Burke, and Sacred Heart
Parish, Manassas (Hoadley). In addition, he founded a
parish in the Diocese of Richmond. Fr. Ready lived in
residence at St. Agnes Parish and so I knew him well. I ask
that you pray for the repose of his soul and for his 3 sisters
and brother.
2015 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Begins!
This month Bishop Loverde will send
a mailing regarding the 2015 Bishop’s
Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for
the 2015 BLA is “Stewards of Christ
Sharing Gospel Joy!” After reflecting
upon the many blessings that God has given you, please
prayerfully consider making a sacrificial pledge of support
to this important appeal that funds many programs and
ministries that serve thousands of people in our diocese.
When we join together as one Body in Christ, we can do so
much for so many!
Building Fund Reminder
We have been enjoying our new parish church for over four
years. In that short time, an untold amount of blessings and
graces have been bestowed in this holy building as a result
of the sacraments, adoration, prayer and special events.
This wonderful space has certainly been a great blessing for
our community.
As of January 1, 2015 our building fund debt totaled
$4,146,055. We make mortgage payments of $52,537 each
month. We are now in the final stage of our new church
continuation capital campaign. As donors complete their
five year pledges, we need to rely more and more on our
“gold envelope” building fund donations.
Each month, we have a special “gold envelope” second
collection. Please prayerfully consider making a
contribution to that collection. All funds go directly into
paying down the debt. Thank you all for your continued
stewardship!
In the Gospel today, we hear of how Jesus calls the first
Apostles. Jesus calls each of us, perhaps not as an Apostle,
but as a disciple called in a particular way to give witness
to the primacy of Jesus in our lives through word and
example, in the particular circumstances of our lives.
Father Lee Roos
