Relentless Pursuer is a Disturbing Presence
God as Relentless Pursuer: J onah was called to pr each r epentance to the Ninevites,
enemies of Israel. Jonah knew better than anyone the purpose of his message to the Ninevites. God’s love and concern not just for His own people, Israel, but for a nation of Gentiles who were actually Israel’s enemies. This was the cause of his retirement from
preaching and of his delay in fulfilling the command. Defiantly he headed off in the opposite direction. He determinedly boarded a ship heading for Tarshish – Spain - with the
burning desire for traveling as far as possible away from Nineveh and from God in purposeful disobedience of His command.
Here we have a perennial theme – escaping the call. He could not escape from God,
the relentless Pursuer. Finally exhausted, weak and unable to flee from the Lord, he was
caught. The Lord once again gave Jonah the same command as before to go to preach in
Nineveh. This time Jonah learnt to see differently. The Ninevites are not enemies to be
destroyed, but misguided people to be saved.
God as Disturbing Presence: J esus said to Simon, Andr ew, J ames and J ohn, “Follow
me and I will make you become fishers of men.” (Mk 1:17) He asked them to give up everything that was familiar and comfortable – their livehood, their home town, even their
families – to follow him. And they left everything behind and followed Jesus without
knowing for certain where it would lead them. But Jesus promised that he would always
be with them (Mt 28:20).
God neither indulges nor hounds us, but God does disturbs us, animate us with a
sense of mission, and call us to disturb a complacent or confused world. God calls in order
to send, and heals and restores in order to increase the number of those who will in turn
reach out to their brothers and sisters with healing and restoration. “Me-and-God” piety
which is the encounter with Jesus always brings with it a change of life and, at the same
time, gives true and profound joy that always seeks to communicate itself. “For if we
have received the love which restores meaning to our lives,” the Pope writes, “how can
we fail to share that love with others?” (Evangelii Gaudium No. 8) No authentic disciple
can be satisfied with a comfortable, private “me-and-Jesus” relationship. Every true follower of Jesus should not become closed to the possibility of being shaken up, challenged,
and commissioned by God.
Jesus is calling each one of us to become his disciples. His calling won’t allow us to go
through life contented and justified. We are not permitted to settle for a comfortable quiet
life. As disciples, we are shaken up, challenged, and commissioned by God to go beyond
the experience of a presence that disturbs… We must not only have felt a presence that
disturbs. To be true disciples we must actually become a person that disturbs.
Every disciple is called to be disturbing to some people. Authentic Christianity is
marked by a centrifuge force: it is outreaching and encountering; it communicates and it
ministers. It does not produce complacency.
Vatican II proclaims that we are the Church; we are the body of Christ; we are our
brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We simply cannot leave evangelization and justice to others: they are our responsibility too. And they need to be taken rather seriously. In order to
discover meaning in life, Jesus is calling us to choose, to encounter, and to become a presence that disturbs some people.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING Jonah 3:1-5.10 The people of Nineveh turned from
their evil ways.
The word of the Lord came to Jonah, saying, “Get up, go to Nineveh,
that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah
set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk
across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he
cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And
the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they
did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind
about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he
did not do it.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 25:4-9 R. Teach me your ways, O Lord.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for
you are the God of my salvation. R.
Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. According to your steadfast love remember me, for your sake of your goodness, O Lord! R.
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what
is right, and teaches the humble his way. R.
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 The present form of this world is passing away.
Brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have
wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and
those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present
form of this world is passing away.

After John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the
good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good
news.”
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his
brother Andrew casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you
fishers of people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
As Jesus went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and
his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

Retreat "Inner Peace in Divine Love" commencing 27/4/15 and made over four weeks in daily life.
Grounded in key Gospel texts and based on St Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises, participants are led in
a simple and creative way to develop and experience a deep and intimate connection with God. The retreat
has a clear program and structure to encourage and direct daily prayer. A commitment of 25 -45 minutes of
daily prayer, four days a week, followed up by Sunday Eucharist is required over the four weeks. Participants will meet on 5 consecutive Mondays 27 April, 4, 11, 18 & 25 May from 7pm-8.30pm at Holy Family
Church Meeting Room for guidance and conversation.
The retreat is suitable for all people - the only thing you need to begin is the desire to be open to the Divine.

Every Friday there will be a Prayer Program called Christ’s Catholic Community Program. It is one of
the effective ways to promote the New Evangelisation. It helps to pray with the Word of God broken in
Sunday Readings. It prepares us for a better and more active participation in the Liturgy of the Word of
Sunday.
The program will be conducted by Sylvia and Louis Zammit every Friday after Morning Mass in the Meeting Room of the Parish. All parishioners are strongly encouraged to come and pray.
The Archbishop has approved the new Archdiocesan Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults policy. Training in this policy is mandatory and part of our strategy for educating and reducing risk for all people, our volunteers as well as those whom we serve. All parishioners who work with children, young people
or vulnerable adults are invited to attend training in this policy and the associated procedures. Priests, religious and parish staff will also attend training.
Training will be offered at Holy Family Parish, Runaway Bay on Saturday 14 February, at 10-:15 – 1:15pm
in the Parish Meeting Room. Please register your details on the sheet of paper placed at the back of the
Church or advise our par ish office of your attendance to assist us with cater ing.
If you are unable to attend the workshop held in Runaway Bay, there will be workshops offered at these following venues. Volunteers are strongly advised to attend.
