ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL
2015
The 2015 Archbishop’s Appeal pledge

Covenant of Love Date Night – Marriage
Enrichment Program
We would like to invite married and
engaged couples to an evening of
marriage enrichment and education in
the parish hall on Friday, February 6th
from 7 pm – 9 pm.
Doors open at
6:30 pm. This month’s Covenant of
Love Date Night program will be "TRUST". The
DATE NIGHT is a monthly gathering of married and
engaged couples. It’s a fun opportunity to meet other
couples, learn about God’s plan for marriage and
spend quality time with the one you love. Each month
is an independent event, so please join us even if you
haven’t been able to attend in the past. Dinner and
refreshments are provided, plus it’s free. Childcare is
available on a limited basis. We hope to see you

Proclaim the Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
Repent and Believe the Good News
Take a few minutes to savor a word, a phrase, a question, or a
feeling that rises up in you. Reflect on this quietly or share it
aloud. (The other Scripture readings of the day are Jonah 3:15, 10; Psalm 25 and 1 Corinthians 7:29-31.)
INVITATION TO REFLECT
The first words out of Jesus’ mouth in
Mark’s Gospel, “Repent, and believe” (Mark
1:15), become key themes of the whole gospel.
Repent is a challenge to turn our lives around.
Our hearts, our priorities, are to shift radically
in order to open ourselves up to believe the
Good News. This call demands an immediate
response, especially as narrated and understood by Mark’s
community.
This Good News is related to the time of fulfillment.
What is Good News? What is the time of fulfillment? Mark
answers that question by stressing the fact and the reality that
God’s very presence, in the person of Jesus, now suffuses
every aspect of our lives. This active presence of God at work,
constantly overcoming and defeating the forces of evil and
providentially guiding all creation in Christ, establishes God’s
reign in all of creation, harking back to the harmony and intent
of creation in Genesis.
Our first task is to recognize and acknowledge God’s
presence and reign in our midst. As a response to this
knowledge and awareness, we are called to change our lives.
Finally, we are called to believe the Good News is indeed good
news for our lives. We are called to believe that evil is
defeated, and that God continues to reign in our midst.
Do we truly believe this? If we truly believe it, what
do we do with that awareness? How are our lives different as a
result of that reality?
Another aspect of this text is the fact that any good
news, most especially this most fundamental Good News, is
not something to be hoarded. Of necessity, it needs to be
proclaimed to all, inviting others to share in that time of
fulfillment as well. Mark has Jesus call his first disciples, and
us as well, to full commitment of that belief and to become full
proclaimers of that Good News to all —to become fishers of
all.
Mark’s narrative demands a response from those who
would be disciples—a response that is immediate, complete,
and total. Mark symbolically communicates the fact that this
call to mission and proclamation is not something that can be
done with partial commitment or belief. It has to be done

totally, fully, and without looking back. Existentially, that is
not the way things work. Yet symbolically, for the message to
eventually take hold and be proclaimed effectively, this kind of
commitment and involvement is essential. Total commitment
is a necessary component of true belief. With God’s help, it
will lead to the continual defeat of evil and the continued
growth of God’s presence and reign, pervading all of created
reality. Are we up to the task?
INVITATION TO GROUP SHARING
1. How do I understand Jesus’ call to repent and believe?
Repent from what and believe in what? What personal
experiences give flesh to my response?
2. What does the Good News, the time of fulfillment, look
like to me? What are its characteristics, and how do they
compare with the characteristics Mark’s Gospel
delineates?
3. Do we truly believe that evil is defeated and that the reign
of God suffuses all of creation? If so, what difference
does this perspective make in the way we act in the world
and in relation to all of creation?
4. The call to repent, believe, and proclaim the Good News to
others is ours as a result of our baptismal call. How am I
living out my baptismal call? How do I proclaim the
Good News of God’s presence in our midst to those I
encounter?
INVITATION TO ACT
Determine a specific action (individual or group) that flows
from your sharing. This should be your primary consideration.
When choosing an individual action, determine what you will
do and share it with the group. When choosing a group action,
determine who will take responsibility for different aspects of
the action. The following are secondary suggestions:
1. Look at your personal and communal life and discern where
a call for repentance and forgiveness is needed. Seek the
person, persons, or groups affected, and ask for forgiveness.
Make sure you include an explicit intention to amend your
ways in the future.
2. Seek out a family member, a friend, or anyone in need of
hope and good news. With your group, talk about ways
you can communicate the good news of love, care, and
concern to them. Develop an action plan that will
effectively proclaim God’s Good News to them in ways
that are meaningful to their needs and concerns.
3. Work through the legal and political systems of your local
government to fight crime and rid your neighborhood of
anything that smacks of hatred or inhumanity. Examples
might be elimination of drug houses, countering the racist
tendencies of some neighbors or some real estate people,
providing safe houses for school children whose parents
work, becoming part of neighborhood watches to alert law
enforcement to crime and violence.
4. Work with your Parish RCIA team.

Develop or become part of your parish social action or
justice committee as one way to effectively proclaim the
Good News that God’s reign is among us and that evil will
no longer be tolerated in this community. Work to
educate yourself and others to the rich heritage of Catholic
social teaching. Do not hesitate to proclaim these
principles even in the face of opposition and resistance.
INVITATION TO CLOSING PRAYER
Give thanks to God (aloud or silently) for insights, for desires
awakened, for directions clarified, for the gift of one another’s
openness and sensitivity. Conclude with the following:
Leader: Loving and gentle God, for the times we have been
insensitive to the needs of
others…
Response: Lord, we repent and believe in the Good News.
Leader:
For the times we have not resisted evil but have
given in to it instead…Res.
Leader:
For the times we have shut ourselves off from
comfort, hope, and
support…Res.
Leader:
For the times we have allowed cynicism to reign…
Res.
Loving God, we turn to you in love and trust. Allow your
reign to grow continually in our hearts, now and always.

BAPTISMAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Only a Catholic parent or legal guardian can request
baptism for a child. Requestor must be a registered
member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and
agree to these requirements.
2. If one of the parents is not Catholic, he/she must
agree to a Catholic upbringing of the child.
3. Parents and Godparents must attend two
baptismal preparation classes prior to having the
child baptized. Classes are held every 1st and 2nd
Monday evening of each month and you must preregister for class. Please call the parish office for
an appointment with a parish representative who will
register you for class and assist you with paperwork.
If Baptism is to take place at another parish, ask (no
later than by the end of the second class) for a letter
certifying your attendance.
4. A copy of the child’s State Birth Certificate must
be provided before Baptism can be performed.
5. The child’s Catholic parents are expected to provide
a sound Catholic upbringing for the child.
6. At least one Catholic Godparent is required and no
more than two (one male and one female) are
permitted .
The Catholic sponsor(s) will be
registered as Godparent(s). A non-Catholic cannot
be recognized as a Godparent and will be registered
as a Witness. Godparent(s) must be at least 16
years of age; member(s) in good standing of the
Catholic Church; lead a life of faith; have received
the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and
Eucharist (Communion); and not be the child’s
parents. If married, married through the Catholic
Church.
7. A Letter of Permission from the Godparent(s)
Church-of-record is required prior to Baptism for
proposed Godparent(s) not registered at Prince of
Peace Catholic Church.
Certificates of class
attendance at their church is acceptable in lieu of
attending classes at Prince of Peace.
8. If parents are not married through the Catholic
church, we suggest you make an appointment with
the Pastor to discuss possible church options.
9. A scheduled date for Baptism cannot be set until
all paperwork is completed and in the parish office.
Please make sure that your selected date is
confirmed with the parish office before planning any
special festivities.

If you are attending and supporting Prince of
Peace Parish on a regular basis, we ask that
you please use the envelopes that are sent to
you each month. This makes it easier for us
to credit your contribution to your account.
If you are not receiving these
envelopes or other mailings, and have not filled out a
registration form within the last two months, then you are
not formally registered in our parish. The fact that you’ve
been "coming for years" is not the same as being
registered. In order to be a registered parish family, you
must fill out a Parish Registration Form. This form can
be picked up at the parish office during regular office hours,
Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Join us at 7 pm on Thursdays for our Thirsting for Truth
Ministry at Prince of Peace. Thirsting for Truth is an
organization that empowers young people to live courageously
chaste, and Catholic, lifestyles:
