This particular System has been over FIFTY years in the development. It is based around amalgamations and adaptations of several systems of personal combat and 1000’s of hours of both practice and study by the Head Founder: Dave Turton 10th Dan and his many loyal and highly skilled students. As a complete, total and ‘all-round’ system, there is an equal balance of both the physical and non-physical aspects of the art of self-defence. MSC self-defence also covers the methods of ‘self-protection’ and ‘personal safety’, methods that are often lacking in many of the more common martial arts systems and styles. What is MSC Self-Defence? In some ways it may be better to ask what it ISN’T, as will become clearer later on. On the PHYSICAL side, the actual techniques are based on a combination from several sources, all of which have been extensively studied by the Founder and Head: Dave Turton 10th Dan. Dave has been involved in the combat Arts since 1961, and as 10th Dan Black Belt is OFFICIALLY Europe’s highest graded pure self-defence instructor. He founded the Self-Defence Federation (SDF) in June 2000 and ASMAA in 2011 and is a well respected and highly rated Expert in the fields of personal combat, having taught most of the better-known UK instructors in this field. There is simply no one better qualified to both Head ASMAA and the methods advocated by it. Because there is simply no one SINGLE art, system or style of martial art that covers EVERY aspect of realistic selfdefence, ASMAA and Dave Turton used methods from many sources, including (unusually, some NON Oriental methods) the following systems/styles. Goshinkwai (Dave studied Goshinkwai from the early 1970’s up to the late 1990’s) … Combat Ju-Jutsu (several styles), Dave holds three separate 7th Dans in 3 distinct styles of Ju-Jutsu) … Atemi-Jutsu (Dave is a 5th Dan in this Art, which is the art of nerve and pressure point striking) … Combat Grappling … (this being the combination of the Ju-Jutsu, some Judo, and many methods from British and European Wrestling/ Grappling styles, and even a few techniques from Indian Sohal Dhal and Murma Adi Grappling … The UK methods are mainly from several styles of the Old ‘Catch’ Wrestling, the Ancient British Arts of 'PAG' & 'CRAYLING', and the European Arts of CHAUSSON & SAVAUX, two varieties of French Kicking methods. 4 2 Because there are NO sporting applications to the MSC System, there are NO restrictions in its training methods as such. This is not to say we are overly 'violent' and uncontrolled. In fact the opposite is true. Although the methods and techniques may appear to be much more Aggressive and 'Brutal', the need for greater restraint and control in training is greatly emphasized. ALL MSC Self-Defence methods are geared TOTALLY towards modern 21st century Street Self-Defence & SelfProtection ideals. There are NO defences against 16th Century Japanese spears or swords, no use of Japanese or other Foreign languages, no GI’s (Martial Arts training suits), no 'bowing' or enforced etiquette. The MSC SELF-DEFENCE SYSTEM is NOT a traditional martial art in any way, therefore it is not restricted by the confines of the manner in which traditional methods are taught or practiced. The emphasis is on developing each INDIVIDUAL to their own personal abilities, based on age, sex, physical condition etc. Fitness although an asset is in fact NOT a pre-requisite to good self-defence, as if you are unfortunate enough to be in a self defence situation, the MSC methods are based on getting safe in a very short time. We are NOT training for 10 x 3 minute rounds, as would many combat sports competitors. On the THEORETICAL side, the main PRINCIPLES & CONCEPTS of the System are explained and studied. It is ONLY by intelligent application of these principles; by their PHYSICAL methods that we can hope to best survive violent encounters. Indeed all the Physical Techniques are no more than a physical application of each and every principle. These principles are comparatively simple and basic in the early grades, but obviously become more complex as the students progress. Each actual GRADING SYLLABUS will list both the PHYSICAL TECHNIQUE AND THE MAIN PRICIPLES REQUIREMENTS for that Grade. 5 SDF MODERN STREET COMBAT / SELF-DEFENCE GRADES There are FOURTEEN actual Grades within the MSC Self-Defence System. These break down as: SEVEN (7) Kyu numbered: 7th to 1st Kyu, and SEVEN (7) Dan or Black Belt Grades, which are numbered: 1st to 7th Dans Each Grade is denoted with a coloured belt Belt From Belt To Minimum Time Minimum Hours Pass Mark White Belt 7th Kyu Red 6th Kyu 3 Months 15 60% Red Belt 6th Kyu Yellow 5th Kyu 3 Months 15 60% Yellow Belt 5th Kyu Orange 4thKyu 3 Months 20 65% Orange 4th Kyu Green 3rd Kyu 3 months 20 65% Green 3rd Kyu Blue 2nd Kyu 3 months 25 65% Blue 2nd Kyu Brown 1st Kyu 3 Months 25 70% Brown 1st Kyu Black 1st Dan 12 Months 90 70% The Dan Grades 1st Dan … Black Belt with ONE Red Tag 2nd Dan … Black Belt with TWO Red Tags 3rd Dan … Black Belt with THREE Red Tags 4th Dan … Black Belt with FOUR Red Tags 5th Dan … Black Belt with FIVE Red Tags 6th Dan … Red & White Belt 7th Dan … Red & White Belt Please note also the LAST grade actually taken ‘on the mat’ is for the 5th Dan Black Belt. 6th & 7th Dans are AWARDED for contributions. 6 COMBAT JU-JITSU Studio Combat Academy’s Combat Ju-Jitsu System is based around amalgamations and adaptations of several systems of Self-Defence and Personal Combat. However, it is not merely a ‘best bits’ martial art, It is a combination and all round system developed by Dave Turton 10th Dan over 50 years. Because there is no one single art, system or style of martial art that covers every aspect of realistic Self-Defence, the Combat Ju-Jitsu System uses methods from many different sources including (but not limited to) the following systems/styles: Goshinkwai Yawara Ryu, Several Ju-jitsu/Judo styles, Atemi-Jutsu (nerve and pressure point striking), Combat Grappling, British & European Wrestling Styles, Indian Sohal Dhal and Murma Adi Wrestling, several styles of Old English ‘Catch’ & Lancashire Wrestling and several kicking arts including kickboxing and Savate. The system although from very traditional roots, is evolutionary in its process which means it is always revisited and revised, moves forward to accommodate today’s violent society. The principles remain the same but the techniques may change. Although the system is not truly traditional and is geared towards modern 21st century street self-defence and self-protection ideals, we still have several traditions we keep in order to protect the system’s roots but also to ensure we are training safely, are respectful of one another and to develop discipline in ourselves not only when we are training but also in our everyday lives. We train in GI’s (Ju-Jitsu training suit), barefoot, use a coloured belt ranking system, bow before stepping on and off the mat, to our Instructors and to one another before we practice or Randori (free sparing) and use the occasional Japanese word. However we are not here to learn Japanese, we are here to learn to defend ourselves in an ever increasingly violent society. As the grades get higher a certain amount of personal freedom is allowed on the grading. This is to accommodate individual’s choice and you will notice on some of the grades it will say ‘Any Finishing Technique’. You will learn from a variety of instructors to give a depth of knowledge and to try different variations of technique most suited to yourself. Seminars are held to further your knowledge and we invite some of the top instructors in Self-Defence to our academy. There are no ‘clones’ in the Combat Ju-jitsu system. It is important to understand what really makes this system unique, isn’t just the techniques and methods but the understanding of Principles, Concepts & Applications. Technique is almost secondary to the application of the main principles. 7 Classes are based on some fitness/stretching warm up and warm down plus pad work, Technical demonstration, partner work and Randori (free sparring). The techniques shown on the syllabus are for grading purpose’s and give each belt level a structure to work towards and to be tested on, however, different techniques will be shown in class and some are not required or cannot be demonstrated effectively on a grading i.e. eye gouging, throat striking etc. The grading must show technical ability and control but we must also learn to be aggressive and brutal should our life be threatened. There are obviously some techniques that cannot be used in sparring or competitions etc. but can and must be used on the street. COMBAT JU-JITSU GRADES Note: The techniques and drills shown within this syllabus are the general requirements for each grade. Some elements may be varied at the discretion of the instructor/grading officer in order to test the abilities of the student. The syllabus exists to ensure each student can demonstrate an understanding of a range of techniques and principles. The grading is split into areas all of which are a requirement on each grade. Grading’s are held approximately every 3 months. There are a minimum amount of hours required each month and an overall amount between each grading. The common theme with all the arts is they use a gloved (boxing) fist hand technique similar to western style boxing; mixed with kicking techniques and other striking weapons such as the elbow and knee. Clinching, sweeps and throws are also allowed in some Kickboxing style matches. The ASMAA syllabus was developed for Light Continuous Kickboxing, Full Contact Kickboxing and Japanese Kickboxing. Full Contact Kickboxing and Light Continuous Full contact Karate (American Kickboxing) was developed in the 1960’s by Joe Lewis and allows hand and foot techniques above the waist, striking is done with the hand and foot only. The first US World Champions at the sport were Joe Lewis, Bill ‘Superfoot’ Wallace and Jeff Smith. Other rules developed by Kickboxing organisations also included sweeps, throws and ‘low kicking’. Light continuous fights take place on either mats or in a ring with the objective being to win a fight by points with the ‘contact’ being controlled. ASMAA Kickboxing syllabus has been designed as a complete martial arts system with hand and foot techniques from Kickboxing, Karate, Taekwondo and Muay Thai. The ASMAA Freestyle Kick boxing syllabus has 8 Coloured belt grades and 7 Dan or Black Belt Grades as follows: Belt From Belt To Minimum Time Minimum Hours Pass Mark White 8th Kyu Red 7th Kyu 3 Months 12 60% Red 7th Kyu Yellow 6th Kyu 3 Months 12 60% Yellow 6th Kyu Orange 5thKyu 3 Months 12 65% Orange 5th Kyu Green 4th Kyu 3 months 12 65% Green 4th Kyu Purple 3rd Kyu 3 months 12 65% Purple 3rd Kyu Blue 2nd Kyu 3 Months 12 70% Blue 2nd Kyu Brown 1st Kyu 3 Months 24 70% Brown 1st Kyu Black 1st Dan 6 Months 45 80% 1st Dan Black Belt 2nd Dan Black Belt 18 Months 2nd Dan Black Belt 3rd Dan Black Belt 24 Months 3rd Dan Black Belt 4th Dan Black Belt 36 Months 4th Dan Black Belt 48 Months 5th Dan Black Belt 5th Dan Black Belt This is the last belt that requires a physical grading. 6th Dan Black Belt 6th Dan Black Belt 7th Dan Black Belt Awarded on Merit Awarded for time served 9 ASMAA KICKBOXING List of Techniques Guard:- Shoulder width stance length, Body 45 Degree, Arms up, Elbows tucked in, Chin down Hand:- Jab, Back fist, Cross, Uppercut, Hook, Spinning back fist, Overhand, Shovel Hook, Superman Elbow:- Forward, Horizontal, Downward, Diagonal, Back, Spinning Elbow, Upward, Jumping Downward Elbow. All candidates who meet the criteria will be given an ‘Invitation to grade’ letter. If you do not wish to grade on that occasion please inform the instructor(s) • On the grading it is your effort and individual capability that is being marked. You are not being compared to others. Factors such as age, sex, size, strength, health all come into play. As long as you give it your best and don’t give up you will be marked fairly. • Do not try to compete or show up others in the grading and do not copy what others are doing. If you believe you are right then show that. If you copy another student who gets it wrong then you to will also get it wrong. • You must not help out another student who is grading; it is not your job to instruct them. You can help by holding the pads correctly, attacking correctly and by being courteous and respectful to their ability. Anyone deemed to be seen or heard instructing others will result in failure of your grading. • Sparring is done at light contact/controlled power and is not an opportunity to show how strong you are or how hard you can hit. Marks will be deducted if the level of sparring is too hard or on ground sparring, if you try to deliberately injure another student. • Black belt grading will take place in front of a grading panel and will consist of several grading officers including Dave Turton 10th Dan from ASMAA • Each technique is scored between 1 – 5 with 1 being low and 5 being high. A mark of 3 on any technique is considered ‘reasonable’ and is the minimum pass mark. A lower mark than 3 means that more work is needed in that area. A higher mark indicates you have a good understanding of technique and principles. Note: on higher grades the pass mark is higher; therefore your overall average score needs to be higher. • You will be graded on your performance on the day. If you have an injury or feel unwell then you must inform the instructor(s) immediately. If your temporary illness/injury is considered serious the grading officer has the right to cancel your grading and the grading fee will be carried over to the next grading. • All grading fees are to be paid no later than 1 week before the grading date. There are no exceptions and any candidate failing to do so will not be permitted to grade until next time. All grading will take place at the Studio Combat Academy & Martial Arts Centre, Westgate Long Eaton NG10 1EF unless specified otherwise. 11 CLUB RULES AND ETIQUETTE Personal Hygiene: • • • • • • Clean hands and feet Finger nails and toe nails to be kept short A towel may be used to wipe away excessive sweat No one likes body odours, please ensure deodorant is used All blood injuries must be covered with suitable dressings and must be changed immediately if they begin to leak For Ju-Jitsu the GI is to be washed and laundered Injuries: • • • • You must inform the instructor(s) of any injuries before training commences If you receive an injury whilst on the mat then you must stop training immediately and inform the instructor(s) Any injured part of the body must be suitably strapped and supported If the instructor deems the injury to be too severe to train with then you must not train and leave the mat Safety: • • • • No Jewellery to be worn.
