Course Selection Assemblies
Course selection assemblies in preparation for the 2015-16 school year will take place on
Wednesday, January 28 as follows:
R1- Class II
R3- Class III
R6- Class IV
Masters should take attendance and accompany their students to the Auditorium. MB
Term 2 Exam/Grading Timeline
Monday, January 26- Term 2 grades due electronically by 11:59 PM
Poetry Out Loud
The annual BLS school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition for students in grades 9-12 will be
held on Thursday, January 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Seevak Room. Spoken Word artists, strong
declaimers, and lovers of poetry are invited to participate. The BLS winner goes on to the city
competition, which is followed by state and national levels. The national winner receives a
handsome college scholarship and an all- expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. Please go to the

on Monday, January 12 and will close on Friday, January 23. Forms will be available outside Ms.

Public Declamation
The Third Public Declamation will take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, during R1 & 2.
Class IV will attend. Masters will please take attendance in their R1 class, and then accompany
and sit with their classes in the auditorium. R2 Masters of Class IV classes will please report to
the auditorium to supervise students. Students will return to R2 when Declamation is completed.

Faculty/Student Talent Show
"STRUT YOUR STUFF ONSTAGE... No audition required! Sign up for the FACULTY-STUDENT
TALENT SHOW on Friday, March 6th in the auditorium. Perform with a teacher, perform with
your friends, or fly solo. All ages, skill levels, and talents are welcome! Sign up to compete
at bit.ly/blsPERFORM. We also need volunteers to sell tickets, put up fliers, and set up the stage.

Jackie Robinson Assembly: All Class V students will attend an assembly to honor the life and
legacy of Jackie Robinson on Friday, Jan 30, 2015 during R1 and most of R2. Class V
homeroom masters will escort students to the assembly hall after attendance has been taken.

Notice to Faculty
CPR/First Aid Classes
Boston Latin School will be holding the following CPR and First Aid classes free of charge for
BLS staff & faculty members only:
CPR - Wednesday, February 25, 2015 @ 2:30pm
First Aid - Thursday, February 26, 2015 @ 2:30pm
Participants will receive certification upon completion. Each class will take approximately 2.5
hours to complete.If you have any questions or would like to register for the class, contact Gio in

Notice to Students
Third Public Declamation
Get ready to try-out for the Third Public Declamation of this school year. Third Public Declamation
try-outs are Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Members of all classes are invited to try out. Submit a
copy of your piece for review by Monday, January 26 to Ms. Holm in Room 120. Exempt seniors
must submit pieces by the try-out date, January 27. See Ms. Holm for additional information or

Ward Fellowship
The John William Ward Public Service Fellowship is a summer program open to Boston Latin
School Juniors and Seniors. It seeks to teach BLS students about the state and local
government of Massachusetts and Boston and to inspire participants to play a more active role in
public service and gain valuable experience in this sector. Each Fellow works for a public official,
including the Governor of Massachusetts, Mayor of Boston, State Senators, State
Representatives, and City Councilors. Applications are available in the PIC office with Ms.
Delorme (room 165). The due date is Jan. 30th by 4:00 pm to Ms. Delorme.
BLS Summer Fellowships - Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors interested in applying to
the Ward, Deitch or Babbitt Fellowships are welcome to attend an info session on Friday, Jan
23 OR Monday, Jan 26 from 2:30-3:15pm in Room 115. Email DLI Director Jim Levesque

Modern Foreign Language Information Fair
Are you a sixie picking a Modern Foreign Language for next year? Are you a sophomore thinking
of picking up a second language as an elective? If you want more information and a chance to
talk to your peers about what each language has to offer, then come to the Dining Hall
on Tuesday, January 27 after school from 2:30 to 3:00! Representatives from all 5 languages
we teach at BLS will be there to chat and answer your questions. Stop by so you can make an
informed decision!

Beantown Society was founded in 2004 by a group of Jamaica Plain teenagers frustrated with
youth violence. This after school program provides a safe culturally competent space for high
school students to learn social justice, develop key skills in self-advocacy and create positive
community change. We seek volunteers to share their time and expertise in a range of areas from
tutoring in Math and English and other subjects to planning and organizing events to being a

BLS Spelling Bee! Here's a chance for students in Class V and VI to step forward and show us
some great spelling. The annual BLS level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held
on Thursday, February 12 at 2:30 in the auditorium. The winner of this annual event, which is
sponsored by the BLS Home & School Association, moves on to the city-wide bee, and from
there winners advance to the state and national levels. If you love to spell and enjoy competition,
this is the event for you! To get your free registration to the Scripps Word Club, which provides
word lists, rules, and study tips, Sit down with a parent and go
to:https://secure.spellingbee.com/parent/register. BLS registration forms will be available starting
on Monday, January 26, 2015. The deadline for registration is Friday, February 6, 2015. Forms
will be located outside of Ms. Moran's office, room 519, located near the art classrooms.
