The Duchess of Cambridge is a patron of the charity. As a NewVIc student, Sheikh studied level 3 BTEC extended diploma in sports development, coaching and fitness and was an active member of NewVIc’s Sports Academy as a Sports Leader. NewVIc is one of only four colleges to have been awarded Sports Academy status by national charity, Sports Leaders UK. The college has also been successfully awarded £70k by the Sport England FE Activation Fund for increasing capacity over three years, including a specific focus on disability provision and leadership. The Duchess spent time watching Sheikh and other young athletes training in the GSK Human Performance Lab in Brentford. Sheikh, who is currently being coached by British Paralympic champion David Weir CBE, said that he was inspired by the Duchess’s visit: “She was somewhat apologetic, watching me as I was working, and seemed very interested in how the tests work. I felt very inspired by her visit.” Beth Harris, NewVIc’s Sports Academy manager, said “During Sheikh’s time at NewVIc, he always showed himself to be a hardworking, impressive and inspiring athlete. We are very pleased for his success to date and have no doubt that he will continue to be an asset to British athletics.” In 2013, Sheikh Sheikh was the British no.2 for 400m and the British no.3 for 200m in wheelchair athletics. Along with pupils from Cumberland School and two local primary schools, the NewVIc students performed abridged productions of The Tempest, Julius Caesar, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night Dream. The performance involved shadow puppetry, physical theatre and singing. Directed by drama teacher Annie John, the music was composed by the college’s music technology students, under the direction of music teacher John Crockford. It was a very rewarding experience for the students, as the rehearsal process involved an exciting workshop with professional directors and actors. Sean Donnelly, studying level 3 BTEC extended diploma in performing arts, played the character Trinculo. Sean said: “When I started the project, I didn’t think I would be able to play a Shakespeare character, but with the support of the directors I began to feel more comfortable. On show night, I was really eager and excited to show the piece. The whole experience was sensational - something I will never forget.” Murshed Ahmed, also studying level 3 performing arts, had the unique opportunity to play two characters - Stephano and Ferdinand. He added: “It was a fantastic opportunity to be given a chance to display our talents. I felt really happy that we were able to work with primary and secondary pupils, as we were all able to learn from each other. The performance overall was entertaining and enlightening. We were lucky to get the chance to perform on a large-scale professional stage.” Following the show, Michael Tucker, the Shakespeare School’s Festival Coordinator, said: “Your cast did you proud. From their professional behaviour behind the scenes to their commitment, focus and talent on the stage, they proved their ability to perform in a professional venue.” Find out more about NewVIc at: www.newvic.ac.uk Junior Alli-Balogun MIDI and Live Playback Technician, Percussionist Studied A-level music and level 3 BTEC music technology NewVIc gave me the extensive hours of learning and practice of the essential skills needed to get me where I am today.
