Former NewVIc student meets
the Duchess of Cambridge
Sheikh Sheikh, a former NewVIc student and a
phenomenal wheelchair athlete, recently met
Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, at an
event for SportsAid. The Duchess of Cambridge
is a patron of the charity.
As a NewVIc student, Sheikh studied level 3
BTEC extended diploma in sports development,
coaching and fitness and was an active member
of NewVIc’s Sports Academy as a Sports Leader.
NewVIc is one of only four colleges to have been
awarded Sports Academy status by national
charity, Sports Leaders UK. The college has
also been successfully awarded £70k by the
Sport England FE Activation Fund for increasing
capacity over three years, including a specific
focus on disability provision and leadership.
The Duchess spent time watching Sheikh and
other young athletes training in the GSK Human
Performance Lab in Brentford.
Sheikh, who is currently being coached by British
Paralympic champion David Weir CBE, said that
he was inspired by the Duchess’s visit: “She was
somewhat apologetic, watching me as I was
working, and seemed very interested in how the
tests work. I felt very inspired by her visit.”
Beth Harris, NewVIc’s Sports Academy manager,
said “During Sheikh’s time at NewVIc, he always
showed himself to be a hardworking, impressive
and inspiring athlete. We are very pleased for his
success to date and have no doubt that he will
continue to be an asset to British athletics.”
In 2013, Sheikh Sheikh was the British no.2
for 400m and the British no.3 for 200m in
wheelchair athletics.

Through my course and the Create

diverse range of skills in product
design, graphics and textiles, but
the best achievement so far was
designing an architectural structure
from technical drawings to model
making. I have had the opportunity
to observe a team of architects at
Levitt Bernstein during my work
experience, and gained new skills
which I can apply on my course.

achieving D*D* in my first year of
the level 3 sport and passing

supported me to attend training and
a variety of sporting events, such
as athletics and volleyball, in order
to maintain a good and versatile

dancers I would never have met
otherwise. I have written, recorded
and produced songs in NewVIc’s
new music studio, been involved in
the NewVIc Dance Company (NDC),

NewVIc has so many extracurricular activities and medicine
is so competitive, you need to set
yourself apart. The work experience
team helped me to get a two-week
placement at Royal London Hospital
where I did ward rounds, observed
surgery and spoke to experienced
surgeons. NewVIc’s Honours

to visit Oxford University and other
top Russell Group universities.

My teachers have encouraged me

helped with classical civilisation,
as our lectures were based around

A successful learning community
Performing Arts and Music at NewVIc
Joseph Toonga
Dancer and choreographer
If you love performing arts
and music, then NewVIc
can offer you fantastic
opportunities to pursue
this career path.
Studied performing arts at NewVIc in 2005
– 2008 and now Artistic Director of the
Just Us Dance Theatre.
At NewVIc, I set up a dance company
called Just Us Dance Theatre with
another ex-NewVIc student Ricardo Da
Silva. Being at NewVIc really helped me
develop the self-discipline and drive to
push to achieve my ambitions, thanks to
the energy and support I was receiving
from my teachers. NewVIc gave me
the opportunity to express my thoughts
through dance showcases and outside
projects. It also opened my eyes to the
dance industry. After NewVIc, I went on to
continue my training at Lewisham College
and then at London Contemporary Dance
School where I graduated with an Honours
degree in 2013.
In recent years, NewVIc performing arts
alumni have gone on to become professional
musicians, actors and dancers as well as
choreographers, music producers, artist
managers, costume designers, youth
workers, events organisers, teachers, arts
administrators and journalists.
Our courses offer you the chance to
specialise in an area of performing arts,
music or dance.

As an artist now, I’ve had the privilege of
being invited to perform and choreograph
for different organisations and in different
countries including Wales, France, Italy,
Germany and Holland. Other highlights of
my career so far include:
>> Becoming a resident artist/company with Greenwich Dance.
>> Winning second place at the
Con cours Choreographique

>> Working with such artist as Robert Hylton and Wayne McGregor at the Royal Opera House.
>> Creating site-specific work on Ludus Youth Dance Company

NewVIc students
put on a ‘powerful’
performance
NewVIc’s performing arts students put on a
spellbinding production of ‘The Tempest’ at
Stratford Circus as part of the UK’s largest
youth drama event, the Shakespeare
School’s Festival.
Along with pupils from Cumberland School
and two local primary schools, the NewVIc
students performed abridged productions of
The Tempest, Julius Caesar, Hamlet and
A Midsummer Night Dream.
The performance involved shadow puppetry,
physical theatre and singing. Directed by
drama teacher Annie John, the music was
composed by the college’s music technology
students, under the direction of music teacher
John Crockford.
It was a very rewarding experience for the
students, as the rehearsal process involved
an exciting workshop with professional
directors and actors. Sean Donnelly, studying
level 3 BTEC extended diploma in performing
arts, played the character Trinculo. Sean said:
“When I started the project, I didn’t think I
would be able to play a Shakespeare
character, but with the support of the directors
I began to feel more comfortable. On show
night, I was really eager and excited to show
the piece. The whole experience was
sensational - something I will never forget.”
Murshed Ahmed, also studying level 3
performing arts, had the unique opportunity
to play two characters - Stephano and
Ferdinand. He added: “It was a fantastic
opportunity to be given a chance to display
our talents. I felt really happy that we were
able to work with primary and secondary
pupils, as we were all able to learn from
each other. The performance overall was
entertaining and enlightening. We were lucky
to get the chance to perform on a large-scale
professional stage.”
Following the show, Michael Tucker, the
Shakespeare School’s Festival Coordinator,
said: “Your cast did you proud. From their
professional behaviour behind the scenes
to their commitment, focus and talent on the
stage, they proved their ability to perform in
a professional venue.”

MIDI and Live Playback Technician, Percussionist
Studied A-level music and level 3 BTEC music technology
NewVIc gave me the extensive hours of learning
and practice of the essential skills needed to
get me where I am today. After leaving NewVIc,
I went straight into a four-month tour around
Europe, playing onstage as a percussionist.
Since then I’ve gone from one tour to another,
taking on various different roles – musician,
production manager, backline technician, MIDI
and live playback technician, tour manager,
monitor engineer.
I’ve been fortunate and had the pleasure to tour
with some amazing artist such as Tinie Tempah,
Robbie Williams, Blur, Pharrell Wiliams, Elton
John, Emeli Sandé, Jessie Ware, Coldplay,
Adele and many more. I’ve just finished a sixmonth European tour with an independent soul
artist playing percussion in December 2014.
I’m currently prepping to go back on tour with
Emeli Sandé for her second album world tour
as her MIDI and live playback technician.

Adiba Ahmed, received a CACHE level 3
award, as well as an SFBac award with
commendations. Despite tragically losing
both of her parents to cancer, Adiba managed
to achieve a B in her level 3 CACHE diploma
in childcare and education and a C in GCSE
English. She also spearheaded NewVIc’s
fundraising efforts for Great Ormond Street
Hospital, where her two-year old niece was
being treated for leukaemia.
Despite all of these challenges, she remained
an inspiring and bubbly student, involved in
college life as a student ambassador work
and continued charity work. Adiba said: “As
I’m dyslexic, NewVIc gave me one-to-one and
extra support. It was also really good of the
college to help us fundraise for Great Ormond
Street Hospital.”
Tayo Akinrinlade was presented with the
coach of the year (male) award. Tayo
exceeded all expectations, stepping above
and beyond the requirements of NewVIc’s
Sports Leadership Academy in his first year.
He completed 100 hours of sports coaching
and volunteering in local schools, and was
also awarded a Jack Petchey Award for
his voluntary football coaching in his local
community. He will be finishing his FA level
2 coaching qualification this year, while
continuing his A-levels in politics, chemistry
and business studies.
Tayo said: “It’s really exciting to have been
given this award. I feel that the Sports
Academy have done such a good job. All
the staff are excellent and approachable.
The work we do in the community is great,
as we learn such valuable skills including
communication and teamwork.”
Principal Eddie Playfair said: “Once again, we
are celebrating our best year ever at NewVIc,
with the highest pass rates and more students
achieving the highest possible grades. We
are all so proud of those students receiving
awards for excellence and they can be proud
of themselves. Our students are ambitious,
