HO MASTER H16-44 Locomotive
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/h1516447.htm
To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-554-h92.aspx
In the late 1940s, the design team at Fairbanks-Morse (FM) set out to develop an 8-cylinder 1,500-horsepower
all-purpose road switcher using their opposed-piston diesel engine design. By September 1947 FM had produced the first H15-44 locomotive in the form of Demonstrator “FM 1500”. The hood-unit style body included distinctive features such as slightly sloped ends, rounded corners, oval cab-side windows and a raised, rounded
headlight base on each end.
The first purchaser of the H15-44 was Monon, who quickly bought both the demonstrator and the second unit
built in December 1947. Three units were then built for Rio Grande before additional demonstrators were produced later in 1948. Before production ended in mid-1949, a total of 35 units had been built, with Jersey Central
owning the most units (14 total).
By 1950 other builders had increased the horsepower of their competing road switchers, and FM responded
with the 8-cylinder 1,600-horsepower H16-44 model. The earliest units were externally very similar to the previous
H15-44. MKT 1591 was initially ordered as an H15-44, but was upgraded to 1,600hp during production.
The first true production H16-44s were ordered by Jersey Central. Several large railroads purchased this model,
including Santa Fe, New York Central, Southern and Pennsylvania. A total of 99 units would be produced
before production of the “phase I” version ended in December 1952. FM continued to produce H16-44s with
phase II and III body styles through 1963.
29
Our model represents the “phase I” body style of both the H15-44 and H16-44 that was produced between
1947 and 1952. Options include FM or AAR truck side frames, high or low-mounted headlights, early or lateproduction phase 1 hoods and a removable fuel tank skirt.

To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-447-h162.aspx
The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of
coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960’s a lighter type of car emerged
specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000
cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

This familiar hopper was an industry standard on many
railroads since the 1930s. It was adopted by the AAR
as a recommended design, but fell out of favor by the
mid-1950s. While offering greater capacity over cars
with conventional flat sides, the original open hoppers
created corrosive interaction between acidic coal
and the car’s joints, leading to costly rebuilding programs.

ho master 50’ plug door box car

Sliding door box cars were basically the build standard prior to World War II. It wasn’t until after the war that many railroads experimented with the use of plug doors, similar to those used on many refrigerator cars, on their box cars. The
tight seal of the plug door, accompanied by insulated sides, ends, floor and roof panels, allowed these new box cars to
carry perishables where temperature control was important but refrigeration wasn’t necessary. This design, classified by
the AAR (Association of American Railways) as “RB” or “RBL”, meaning bunkerless refrigerator cars, gained popularity in
the mid-1950s and the following decade saw over 3,000 similar cars built for a number of different owners.
FEATURES:
• Highly detailed, ready-to-run model with accurate painting and printing
• Late improved Dreadnaught ends
• Overhanging diagonal panel roof with or without roofwalk as per the prototype
• Straight-side sill body design
• 8/8 panel, riveted sides
• Highly detailed underframe
• Separately-applied ladders, grab irons and latch bars
• Blackened metal wheels
• AccuMate® couplers
