JANUARY 2015 ANNOUNCEMENT
I
1st QUARTER 2016 ARRIVAL
O MASTER DASH 8-40 B/BW LOCOMOTIVE
O
SCALE
www.atlaso.com/odash840b5.htm
Built in the late 1980s by GE, the DASH 8-40B diesel locomotives were identified by their dynamic brake gear
located along the roof line between the cab and engine compartment, with ventilation provided by large rooftop grilles. These four-axle, high horsepower engines are still in service today in North America.
By the early 1990s the North American Cab had begun to replace the “standard” cab on regular production GE
4 and 6-axle locomotives. The only order for 4-axle Dash 8-40Bs with this new cab came from Santa Fe, and thus
the Dash 8-40BW model was unique to that road. A total of 83 units total were built and many are still in service
today for BNSF.
In 1991 Amtrak, faced with a motive power shortage, turned to GE for an order of 20 Dash 8-32BWH locomotives.
This unique model was basically a Dash 8-32B locomotive equipped with a North American Cab and built on
the longer Dash 8-40BW frame. Some additional modifications for passenger service were included. A total of 20
units were built and they are still in Amtrak service today.

4th QUARTER 2015 ARRIVAL
O MASTER F-7 LOCOMOTIVE
O
SCALE
www.atlaso.com/of7.htm
Atlas continues its series of historic EMD F-unit locomotives with this latest release of the F-7. The mid-1940s found
the majority of North American railroads in the process of re-equipping their motive power fleets. The war effort
had taken its toll on the steam locomotive and the rail lines were now looking at the diesel newcomer which had
proven itself during World War II. At the forefront was General Motors with their E and F series of passenger and
freight locomotives. This series of models focuses on the year 1947, and highlights the motive power direction of
some of America’s most well-known railways. These locos also feature some of the most colorful paint schemes
ever applied to freight and passenger locomotives.
Rio Grande F-7s are decorated similar to the Atlas O Trainman 60’ Passenger Cars “Rio Grande” featured on
page 101 of this catalog. Combined they would make a matching train set.
Rio Grande F-7s are also appropriate for hauling the Atlas O California Zephyr Streamlined Passenger Cars, see
page 111.
Amtrak F-7s are appropriate for hauling the Amtrak O Streamlined Passenger Cars (former California Zephyr
cars), also found on page 112 of this catalog.

4th QUARTER 2015 ARRIVAL
O MASTER MP15DC LOCOMOTIVE
O
SCALE
www.atlaso.com/omp15dc3.htm
The 1500hp MP15DC was designed by EMD as a replacement model for the successful SW1500 switcher. The longer frame of the MP15DC allowed for increased fuel capacity and the use of Blomberg road trucks; increased
sand capacity was also offered as an option. The first MP15DCs were built for Missouri Pacific in February 1974
and a total of 351 units were produced through the end of production in January 1983.
Atlas O’s model includes the three different styles of long hood that were common to the MP15DC throughout
production: standard hood, hood with square air filter box and hood with angled air filter box (the air filter box is
located in the area immediately ahead of the cab). In addition, various styles of hood and cab-end sand boxes
are being offered. The model will also include a see-through cab with various interior details and crew figures
included.

O MASTER CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR
BAGGAGE CAR & DOrm-BUFFET-LOUNGE dome CAR
www.atlaso.com/obaggagecar.htm
www.atlaso.com/odormbuffetlounge.htm
Originally operated by CB&Q, D&RGW and WP, The California Zephyr was considered to be the pinnacle of design,
comfort and luxury of the late 1940s. Its inaugural run on March 12, 1949, attended by politicians, hollywood stars, and
corporate executives, spared no expense. The Zephyr presented each inaugural female passenger with an exotic
corsage of silver and orange orchids flown in from Hilo, Hawaii.
Marketed to families as “a vacation unto itself”, luxury is obviously an important part of the Zephyr’s lasting allure.
Each car was adorned with intricate oil paintings, carved linoleum and etched glass. Radio service was also provided
throughout the train with an allowance of thirty-four different broadcasting stations. Various lighting elements were
meticulously designed for optimal ambiance and comfort; fluorescent lighting was provided in all common spaces
and incandescent reading lamps were installed in each roomette and over each seat, as well as in restrooms, vestibules and passageways. The dome lighting’s intensity was specifically designed to decrease as you ascended -- not
only to create an air of elegance -- but also to allow glare-free night viewing by the passengers. Elevating the notion
of travel luxury were the famed “Zephyrettes”, specially selected train hostesses that filled mostly any role to help make
the trip both memorable and relaxing – from babysitting to organizing social activities.
Throughout its twenty-one year run, the California Zephyr ran with cars of mixed ownership split between the three railroads. This mixed consist depended mostly on what cars were available at the terminals rather than the railroad it was
operating on at the time. Its final run was completed on March 22, 1970. Today, the stainless steel cars of the original
California Zephyr are extremely popular with private collectors and several operate in charter service through Amtrak.

www.atlaso.com/o42coilcar3.htm
The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of
coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960s a lighter type of car emerged
specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000
cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.
FEATURES:
• Prototypical painting and lettering

O
SCALE
www.atlastrainman.com/Freight/tmo60passengercars.htm
The Atlas O Trainman 60’ Passenger and Head End cars are scale models of a prototypically shorter prototype. This
allows modelers with smaller layouts and tighter curves a chance to comfortably run full scale equipment.
60’ Coaches and Combines were often assigned to commuter runs and lighter density branch line passenger consists. Combines would occasionally handle local newspaper and magazine deliveries along the route in addition
to providing baggage service.
The term “Head End” historically refers to non-passenger carrying equipment at the front or head end of a passenger train. The 60’ Baggage and RPO (Railway Post Office) cars fit this description and would often be seen at
the head end of main line “through” passenger trains. They also provide a nice complement to the matching 60’
coach and combine cars offered on this production run.

O TRAINMAN® 3 BAY PS-2 COVERED HOPPER
www.atlastrainman.com/Freight/tmo3bayps2hopper.htm
The highly successful PS-2 covered hopper was designed by Pullman Standard in the 1940s. This virtually all-welded
2-bay hopper had a 2003 cubic foot capacity and was well suited for a variety of transportable bulk commodities
such as sugar, wheat and oat flour and calcium carbide. However by 1952, the demand for a larger covered hopper was quite evident. Pullman Standard quickly responded with new 3-bay car. This new hopper was just what the
railroads and lessees wanted and it soon superseded the 2-bay car in production.
FEATURES:

2015 ANNOUNCEMENTS
O SCALE Steel-Themed Train Consists
Railroads have always been an integral part of the steel-making process in the United States. Perhaps most
obvious is the fact that railroads haul raw materials in and finished goods out of steel mills. Railroads are
also a customer of the industry both directly and indirectly, as most railroad rolling stock is constructed of
steel components which ride on steel rails. Perhaps not as obvious to outside observers are the in-plant
rail operations which have served most larger steel mills and have also operated within steel companyowned mines across the country. Presented on these pages are three “sets” of related steel-industry railroad equipment. Each set includes an MP15DC Locomotive, 42’ Coil Steel Car and Bay Window Caboose.
The locomotives are decorated to match a prototype MP15DC owned by each of the three companies.
The Coil Steel Cars wear a “what-if” Alternate History paint scheme honoring two well-known steel producers and a railroad that is synonymous with the steel industry in Pittsburgh. While the Union Railroad does
operate with a fleet of colorful bay window cabooses, the steel road cabooses also wear an Alternate History paint scheme inspired by the prototype to complete each set.
Union Railroad:
For well over 100 years, the Union Railroad has served the steel industry in the vicinity of Pittsburgh, PA.
Today’s Union Railroad is owned by a subsidiary of United States Steel. It utilizes a fleet of EMD MP15DCs
and SW1500s to serve three major US Steel works, in addition to a host of smaller customers. Interestingly
the Union still uses cabooses on a daily basis, as this simplifies the frequent reverse movements required
in regular operations. For the last few decades Union’s switchers were painted solid blue or green; some
included yellow ends for better visibility. More recently, several units have been painted in a striking yellow
and orange scheme which is being offered on this production run. Union’s fleet of bay window cabooses
has been repainted from traditional solid red to match the orange and yellow locomotive scheme.

2015 ANNOUNCEMENTS
O SCALE Steel-Themed Train Consists
US Steel:
In addition to the “common carrier” operations performed by the Union Railroad, US Steel also hosted extensive intra-plant rail operations at sites across the country. Fleets of switchers were typically assigned to
these operations, and EMD MP15DCs were part of this mix.
Bethlehem Steel:
Like most other major producers of steel in the US, Bethlehem Steel also had extensive rail operations at sites
across the country. Often these operations were given names befitting long-haul “class I” railroads, and
the Philadelphia, Bethlehem & New England Railroad (PBNE) was no exception. The PBNE served Bethlehem Steel’s extensive operations in Bethlehem, PA through the mill’s closure in the mid-90s. PBNE’s fleet of
switchers was painted in a yellow and black scheme common to all Bethlehem Steel railroads and many
units remain in this scheme today. The PBNE railroad is now operated by Lehigh Valley Rail Management,
and it continues to serve the remaining industry in the area which includes a steel forging operation and
an intermodal terminal. Bethlehem’s MP15DCs remain in service today, and would look right at home
hauling loads of coiled steel or even a cut of double stack intermodal cars!
