CASINO
CORNER
A personal view of casinos
os
by Lori Beth Susman
There is much going on in Mississippi casinos these days, and 2015 promises
to be a year of growth with a new casino in the city of D’Iberville slated to open,
new hotels at casinos in Hancock County and Gulfport, and a big renovation
for PEARL RIVER RESORT. GOLDEN MOON HOTEL & CASINO will
reopen at the end of the month with a ribbon-cutting event on Jan. 31. Golden
Moon will have 1,150 slot machines, 25 table games, a 14-table poker room and
a new center bar. The $70 million renovation also included remodeling the hotel
rooms and suites at both Golden Moon and its sister property, SILVER STAR
HOTEL & CASINO.
TREASURE BAY will debut a new players club program in March. It’s
called Select, and it is a top tier program that acknowledges loyal premium
players with special privileges, more rewards and exclusive offers. Membership
comes with a special card and is available for those players who accumulate
25,000 tier credits in a calendar year. For more details, talk to your casino host.
And speaking of Treasure Bay, I had the opportunity to recently dine in
CQ, the resort’s fine-dining restaurant, as part of the Crew Member of the Year
dinner. It was an intimate evening during which guests enjoyed a number of
restaurant’s best dishes. CQ crab cakes, roasted beet salads and New York strip
steaks were popular fare, although my selected entree was the pan-seared sea
scallops served atop roasted-mashed cauliflower. Everything was so delicious.
And, congratulations to Marvin May and Angie Messer, who received the top
employee honors for 2014.
Dungeness crab is back at SILVER SLIPPER CASINO. Now, guests dining
at the Jubilee Buffet can enjoy a tasty crab feast featuring the Dungeness crab
every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The buffet, open from 4 to 10
p.m. those three nights, costs $27.95. More good news at Jubilee: Players club
members can get half off the cost of a lunch or dinner buffet every Monday
through Wednesday when presenting their players club card at the buffet. Half
off the cost makes all-you-can-eat taste even better.
BEAU RIVAGE is announcing several specials for Mississippi residents.
Starting in February, EIGHT75 has two-for-one drink specials every Tuesday
from 5 to 8 p.m. The Terrace Cafe is offering locals a $12.99 dinner special
featuring tempura-battered white fish, baked potato and hush puppies from 5
to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. The buffet is offering Mississippi residents a two-for-one
meal every Tuesday. And, residents receive complimentary admission in Coast
Nightclub every Thursday in February. With all of these specials, visitors must
show a valid Mississippi ID. Look for more offers coming soon.

It is no secret Caesars Entertainment Operating Company, which owns
HARRAH’S GULF COAST, has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11.
The company says it took this action to implement a restructuring plan to
strengthen its financial position. Meanwhile, Harrah’s Gulf Coast is open for
business and all operations at the property are continuing as usual. The Total
Rewards program remains the same, and executives say the top priority remains
maintaining the highest level of service.

Golden Moon Casino to open Jan. 31
$70M renovation includes casino floor, hotel rooms
By Lori Beth Susman
CHOCTAW — Pearl River Resort is set
to reopen its Golden Moon Hotel & Casino at
the end of January. A ribbon-cutting event, set
for Saturday, Jan. 31, will be open to the public
and will feature remarks by Tribal Chief Phyliss
J. Anderson and Holly Gagnon, president and
CEO of Pearl River Resort.
“The Golden Moon renovation utilizes
design and technology to create an unparalleled
entertainment, gaming and lodging experience
for our guests,” Gagnon said. “The efforts to
enhance Golden Moon will benefit our guests,
our employees, the community and the tribe.”
The $70 million renovation plan, designed
by architecture group Marnell Companies of
Las Vegas, includes remodeled hotel rooms and
an approximately 70,000-square-foot gaming
floor that creates what Gagnon called “a more
exciting and welcoming space.” The casino will
have 1,150 slot machines, 25 table games, an
elevated 14-table poker room, a one-of-a-kind
video wall and a new center bar.
Marnell Companies utilized design features
such as a dramatic architectural ceiling treatment
to create a more intimate atmosphere, warm
cove lighting, colorful decorative fixtures and
beautifully designed carpet that pay tribute with
a contemporary spin to the Choctaw
culture. The center bar will exude
energy to the gaming floor and
create a focal point to which
guests are sure to be drawn.
Whether guests enjoy a video
experience or an array of beverage
offerings, they will be in the heart of the casino
action at the center bar.
The resort’s guest rooms and suites remodel
and renovation includes new in-room amenities,
42-inch flat-screen televisions, new furniture and
custom-made Choctaw-inspired artwork. The
new rooms will feature clean lines with finishes
that are timeless and comfortable making them
fresh and stylish.
Not only has the resort enhanced the makeup
THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN ‡ www.jackpotmagazine.com
of the properties, but technology upgrades are
also a large part of the renovation project.
Additionally, guests can now receive a text
notification when their hotel room is available
for check-in and when their table is ready
at any of the resort’s restaurants. Kiosks
will also be in place to handle
various transactions such as
reprinting cards and comps.
The introduction of the new
technology provides greater
conveniences to guests.
Pearl River Resort is also home to Silver Star
Hotel & Casino, which is connected to Golden
Moon via a skywalk and boasts the awardwinning, five-star restaurant, Phillip M’s. The
resort also includes Dancing Rabbit Golf Club.
With these amenities, Gagnon added, along
with the renovations, new gaming systems and
technology enhancements at Golden Moon,
guests will always have a compelling reason to
visit Pearl River Resort.

Merle Haggard is both common man, legend
Singer comes to Beau Rivage, Jan. 30
BILOXI — The word “legend” usually makes
an appearance at some point when discussing
Merle Haggard. It is an acknowledgment of
his artistry and his standing as “the poet of
the common man.” The country music legend
comes to Beau Rivage for one performance on
Friday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m.
While uncomfortable with the word legend,
Haggard knows his real gift is that anyone
who hears his songs recognizes the truth in
them. When a Merle Haggard song plays, it
can make an innocent-as-apple-pie grandma
understand the stark loneliness and self-loathing
of a prisoner on death row; a rich kid who
never wanted for any material possession get a
feel for the pain of wondering where the next
meal will come from; or a teetotaling pillar
of the community sympathize with the poor
heartbroken guy downing shots at the local bar.
As a result, Haggard found his songs at the
top of the charts on a regular basis. He won just
about every music award imaginable,
both as a performer and as a songwriter,
and in 1994, was inducted into the
Country Music Hall of Fame. His body
of work easily places him beside Hank
Williams as one of the most influential
artists in country music.
Hits include “Swinging Doors,”
“The Bottle Let Me Down,” “(My
Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers” and
“The Fugitive,” which released in 1967
was his first No. 1 hit. He also had
acclaim with “Fightin’ Side of Me,”
“Mama Tried,” “Working Man Blues,”

Guidelines
When you receive good service at a casino, it
is customary to award the person giving the
good service a gratuity (tip). Jackpot! readers
ask us occassionally what the appropriate
tip to leave might be for quality service for
different casino employees. Obviously, many
things factor into this, so please note that the
information below is just a guideline, and
impeccable service would receive a higher tip.

HOROSCOPE
Go out and make a good impression, Aquarius
Editor’s Note: Horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes only
and are for the time period January 22 - February 4, 2015.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — While
you’ve become habituated to your position
behind the scenes and rather enjoy the
advantages of a low profile, the planets in your sign
won’t let you get away with this and call your whole
way of dealing with the world into question. Ensure
that first impressions are conveying the right picture.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — It is time
for those plans you’ve been working on
lately to glimpse the light of day. But while
you are getting started, remember that self-awareness
is advisable for optimization. It is important to keep
busy and physically active if you can, since your
energy is strong during this period. Make a deliberate
effort to channel it into positive pursuits.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — The
emphasis this period is on the world outside
your window and beyond your front door.
For some, your social life is accentuated. Others may
have concluded they need to keep a closer check on
who they allow through their fire wall.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) — The longer
you spend at home this period the happier
you will be. With your family to keep
you company you are revelling in this supportive
atmosphere and good feelings surrounding you.
Even alone, you feel nurtured and replenished.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) — You are never
at your finest when facing endless routines.
You adore variety and your quicksilver
nature is adaptable enough to cope with fast changing
circumstances. Others would be stressed, but your
versatility in a stimulating situations comes through.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) — There is
an element of balance to seek this week,
ensuring your needs and expectations align
with those of other people. Although you aren’t usually
thoughtless or lacking in tact and consideration, your
desire for independence and extreme awareness of
anyone attempting to manipulate or control your
behavior might lead to an impulsive reaction.
28 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE ‡ January 22 - February 4, 2015
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — Your relationships
feel more rewarding and harmonious, yet
you are troubled by the sense they continue
to hold you back. You are keen on expanding your
frame of reference, but you are struck by how many
leads have grown cold, not reaching full potential.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Many are
beginning the year with good intentions
based on getting fitter and developing better
health habits. As you’re naturally more concerned
with these issues, it shouldn’t be much of a chore.
Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — This period
signals romance for those who are single and
looking, or ready to enjoy afresh all the good
things an existing association has to offer. This time
suggests fun, flirtation, recreation and affairs of the
heart. A creative and stimulating trend set to liven up
your current relationships.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — If you were
to align the heavens with your sign and then
assess the layout of the planets, you’d notice
the vast majority are occupying a hidden sector.
Symbolically, you will experience an overwhelmingly
introspective period; with your attention drawn
towards your family life and emotional needs.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — The
reward for your efforts is close at hand.
However, in certain fields of endeavor, you
cut corners in the interests of expediency and now
have the consequences to face.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — A number
of planets in your money sector highlight
financial issues. You have been unsettled by
your outgoings recently, some of which are linked
to the time of year, while others have arisen more
unexpectedly. Still, you have developed a strategy for
dealing with these expenses. There are some folks of
your close acquaintance who might be interested in
learning about your moneymaking plans .
