GOLDEN MOON HOTEL & CASINO will reopen at the end of the month with a ribbon-cutting event on Jan. 31. Golden Moon will have 1,150 slot machines, 25 table games, a 14-table poker room and a new center bar. Membership comes with a special card and is available for those players who accumulate 25,000 tier credits in a calendar year. For more details, talk to your casino host. And speaking of Treasure Bay, I had the opportunity to recently dine in CQ, the resort’s fine-dining restaurant, as part of the Crew Member of the Year dinner. It was an intimate evening during which guests enjoyed a number of restaurant’s best dishes. CQ crab cakes, roasted beet salads and New York strip steaks were popular fare, although my selected entree was the pan-seared sea scallops served atop roasted-mashed cauliflower. Everything was so delicious. And, congratulations to Marvin May and Angie Messer, who received the top employee honors for 2014. Dungeness crab is back at SILVER SLIPPER CASINO. THE SOUTH’S LARGEST GUIDE TO GAMING & FUN www.jackpotmagazine.com January 22 - February 4, 2015 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE 21 Merle Haggard is both common man, legend Singer comes to Beau Rivage, Jan. 30 BILOXI — The word “legend” usually makes an appearance at some point when discussing Merle Haggard. It is an acknowledgment of his artistry and his standing as “the poet of the common man.” The country music legend comes to Beau Rivage for one performance on Friday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. While uncomfortable with the word legend, Haggard knows his real gift is that anyone who hears his songs recognizes the truth in them. When a Merle Haggard song plays, it can make an innocent-as-apple-pie grandma understand the stark loneliness and self-loathing of a prisoner on death row; a rich kid who never wanted for any material possession get a feel for the pain of wondering where the next meal will come from; or a teetotaling pillar of the community sympathize with the poor heartbroken guy downing shots at the local bar. As a result, Haggard found his songs at the top of the charts on a regular basis. He won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter, and in 1994, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. His body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music. Hits include “Swinging Doors,” “The Bottle Let Me Down,” “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers” and “The Fugitive,” which released in 1967 was his first No. 1 hit. He also had acclaim with “Fightin’ Side of Me,” “Mama Tried,” “Working Man Blues,” “If We Make It Through December” and, of course, “Okie From Muskogee.” Throughout the past decades, Haggard’s music remains some of the most consistently interesting and inventive in country music. He blended elements of jazz, rock, blues and folk music into his arrangements, while staying true Merle Haggard to the traditions of country. No matter what the current fashion of the moment was in music, Haggard always went his own way. Tickets are $44.95, $54.95 and $64.95 plus tax and service charge. Call (888) 566-7469 or visit www.beaurivage.com. Her unique vocal style has earned her numerous best-selling gold and platinum albums, which produced 17 Top 20 singles, among them No. 1 hits including, “Tell It To My Heart,” “Love Will Lead You Back” and “Prove Your Love To Me.” Dayne performs live at Island View Casino Resort on Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. During the course of her career, Dayne has sold more than 75 million albums and singles worldwide, garnered three Grammy nominations, and appeared in many film, television and Broadway stage roles including Elton John’s, Aida. A songwriter, she co-wrote Tina Turner’s hit, “Whatever You Want.” In 2008, Dayne released Satisfied, an album in which she collaborated with major platinum selling writers. Satisfied enjoyed much success, immediately positioning its first single “Beautiful” at Billboard’s No. 1 slot. The following year, Dayne contributed songs to the hit film, Sex And The City 2. A favorite with the fans, Rolling Stone magazine readers voted Dayne as the No. 1 to top of charts Taylor Dayne choice to replace Paula Abdul on “American Idol.” Dayne continues to stay busy, releasing songs, touring and even appearing on “Celebrity Cook-Off with Rachel Ray and Guy Fieri,” where she helped secure a win for Team Rachel. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — While you’ve become habituated to your position behind the scenes and rather enjoy the advantages of a low profile, the planets in your sign won’t let you get away with this and call your whole way of dealing with the world into question. Ensure that first impressions are conveying the right picture. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — It is time for those plans you’ve been working on lately to glimpse the light of day. This time suggests fun, flirtation, recreation and affairs of the heart. A creative and stimulating trend set to liven up your current relationships. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — If you were to align the heavens with your sign and then assess the layout of the planets, you’d notice the vast majority are occupying a hidden sector. Symbolically, you will experience an overwhelmingly introspective period; with your attention drawn towards your family life and emotional needs. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — The reward for your efforts is close at hand.
