SPARX is an after-school pilot project for girls of all abilities ages 10-17, seated within NYC Parks and Recreation’s computer
resource centers in the Bronx, New York. Its mission is to develop and trial an out of school time program that will “spark and
sustain” girls’ interest in technology, scientific inquiry, and creative problem solving (in an extra-curricular, peer-driven, and
creative-commons context), through the course of their middle school and high-school years.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
 Under general supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment;
o Collaborate with CRC Director to define and develop a curriculum for the SPARX program pilot.
o Lead day-to-day operations of the program.
o Leverage and integrate web-based and open source digital learning tools which will inspire participants to “think
differently” about their ability to engage in STEM based pursuits to create positive change in their lives,
communities, and society at large.
 Build and implement a strategy to make SPARX successful.
o Create partnerships with community based organizations and their representatives in support of participant
engagement.
o Create and implement metrics to assess the program.
o Organize and run recruitment events and student showcases to leverage community interest and enrollment in the
program in local Bronx communities.
o Implement this pilot as a series of digital learning workshops for youth ages 8 to 17 from diverse and underrepresented communities.
o Collaborate with Hive learning network educators and innovators as applicable.
o Oversee implementation of the program, its evaluation for sustainable and scalable programming.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an
area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with
over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates.
PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
1. Associate or Bachelor Degree in computer science, science or math education and curriculum development.
2. High School graduation or equivalent and three years of experience
3. Advocate and champion of web literacy, digital skills and the principles of connected learning
4. Strong communication skills and desire to plan, discuss, and solicit feedback in the open.
5. A strategic thinker and an entrepreneurial spirit. Flexible, open-minded, and collaborative.
6. Experience in youth development, engagement and teaching in and with diverse communities.
7. Proficiency in computer science, web coding, web design, and curriculum implementation.
8. Knowledge of the Maker movement, Connected Learning and STEM integration: technology production, communication, app
development, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written,
oral, and visual media.
9. Enthusiastic about digital skills, design and media and their integration into the learning process.
10. Fluent in design, digital media and technology tools and platforms and willing to learn more as required.
11. Ability to maintain an inclusive, positive, and effective learning environment.
