A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR
As I am sure you know, our parish Capital Campaign ended in December and I wanted to
give you a final report. You will remember that the campaign was done as part of our 125th
anniversary and I want to first say thank you to all who supported our campaign. We made our goal in
pledges of just over 1.2 million dollars and collected 90% of it! We currently have approximately
$375,000 left after all the work we have done and still have some work to do.
In terms of what we have done over the past three years, the major projects were: new walkways
on the entire physical plant including a handicapped ramp to the gym on Academy Street; new
spotlights in church; a new dimming system for the church lights; repairing the flat roofs of the church;
new pavers in front of church in the plaza; re-pointing and masonry work of entire church exterior
stone and new slates on roof as needed; new landscaping on both Prospect and Academy Streets;
the purchase of a new parish truck and new outside spotlights on church.
Two projects that are still pending are new church doors (the current ones are rotting and not
closing properly) and cleaning some sections of the stone on the interior of the church. Any monies
left at the end will be kept on hand for emergency repairs as needed.
Once again, thank you for all of your support of our capital campaign! Thanks to you, our church
will be here and in good shape for generations to come! As a side note, I thank too all those who
have responded in a positive way to our recent Increased Offertory Appeal. As you can see from the
bulletin, we have gone from a deficit to a slight surplus for Sunday collections! I am so grateful to you
all and am always proud to be your
Pastor!
In Christ,
Msgr. Emery

Everyday Evangelizing for Everyday
Catholics:
No man is an island. When we gather to pray
together, we pray for each other's needs as
well as our own. In this same spirit, we are
encouraged to reach out to others.

HOMELESSNESS OPEN HOUSE
All are invited to experience a moment of
homelessness after Masses next weekend
January 31 and February 1.
Our OLS Parish hosts Essex County Interfaith
Hospitality Network families temporarily
experiencing homelessness for one week in
March, August and October. As a parish we
provide a safe place to stay, bedding, meals,
toiletries, baby/toddler supplies, baked goods,
compassion and fellowship.
We will have a sleeping pod set up in St.
Joseph Hall next weekend. Imagine all the
belongings you can carry and your family
staying in a canvas walled room. Take a
moment to reflect and be thankful for all you
have.
This Lent can you provide and share a
meal? Will you make some time to play with
children? Are you able to supply diapers, fresh
fruit, milk, bread or OJ? Would you be an
overnight host for just one night?
Are you able to assist in transforming St.
Joseph Hall into a warm living space?

THINK ABOUT IT
“Why should there be hunger and deprivation
in any land, in any city, at any table, when man
has the resources and the scientific know-how
to provide all mankind with the basic
necessities of life? There is no deficit in human
resources. The deficit is in human will.”—

Stewardship Reflections
“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
– Mark 1:17
Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all
Christians! Jesus asks us to help Him build his
church on earth by generously sharing all our
gifts of prayer, talent and treasure.
Remember, Jesus calls us to generously
develop and share all our gifts, not just the
ones we pick and choose.
Reflections on the Catechism
“Calling the Desciples”
541 “Now after John was arrested, Jesus
came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of
God, and saying: “The time is fulfilled, and the
kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and
believe in the gospel.’” “to carry out the will of
the Father Christ inaugurated the kingdom of
heaven on earth.” Now the Father’s will is “to
raise up men to share in his own divine life.”
He does this by gathering men around his Son,
Jesus Christ. This gathering is the Church, “on
earth the seed and beginning of that kingdom.”

Sponsor Certificates
A reminder that in order to receive a sponsor
certificate for baptism or confirmation you must
be registered in the parish for a minimum of six
months. Sponsor Certificates state that the
individual is a registered member of our parish
and is a Catholic in good standing.
Electronic Parish Giving
Please consider making your offerings to our parish
through our "Electronic Funds Transfer". This
allows parishioners to make weekly/monthly
donations to the parish that will be taken directly
from your bank account or credit card account once
a month. Electronic Parish Giving is easy and
convenient with no additional cost to you as you
support your parish. It can be accessed through our
parish web site (www.olschurch.com). You may
still receive envelopes in the mail and if you wish
you could turn them into the collection on Sunday
and simply write "Parish Giving" on them. Please
consider enrolling today as a way to enhance your
personal stewardship to our parish. If you begin to
use Electronic Giving and do not wish to receive
envelopes (which will save the parish money)
please contact the parish office. Please know that
it may take a month or two for the envelopes to
stop coming.
