SACRAMENTS
BAPTISM: Please fill out the form available in the vestibule and turn it in to the Pastor
or to the parish office. Reminder: Novus Ordo & non-practicing Catholics
cannot serve as godparents, since they lack the intention of seeing to the traditional Catholic upbringing of children. Please check the Baptismal Form to see the other requirements
of the Church regarding godparents. Baptisms should take place within a month after
birth. A grave reason is needed to delay it beyond then.
PENANCE (Confessions):

LAST WEEK OF JANUARY: Catholic Schools Week
It is customary to set aside a week to reflect on and celebrate the importance of Catholic Education and the necessity of Catholic Schools. We are doing so this
week. It is a great sacrifice to operate and maintain a school without outside funds from the state or society at large, but it is extremely necessary and very much worth
it. This extract from A Manual of Pastoral Theology (pp. 263-266) by Rev. Frederick Schulze, D.D., B. Herder Book Company, 1960 printing, could hardly explain it
better:
Whenever possible a parish should have its own parochial school, a school that is under the immediate supervision of the pastor, where all the children of the parish
receive an elementary education in the secular branches, together with sound religious instruction. The government does not interfere with Catholics erecting their own
schools, but neither does it contribute toward their erection or support; hence the burden falls upon the Catholic body, in particular upon the parents. The fact that our
people have to pay a double tax (the tax for public schools also being demanded of them) shall not be admitted as sufficient ground for not having a Catholic school.
Neither is the priest allowed to neglect the erection of a parochial school, or to close one which exists, under the pretext that it causes him too much extra work. Only a
moral or absolute impossibility (long distance from the church, extreme poverty, etc.) may excuse, at least pro tempore (Second Plenary Council of Baltimore, Title VI).
A priest who has no parochial school in connection with his church will never know the children of his parish, the most precious part of his flock, as he ought to know
them, and he may be forced to see them, one after another, fall away from the faith as they grow older. (emphasis supplied)
A school that professedly excludes religion from its plan of studies, as the public schools do, cannot educate youth in a proper manner, for education is more than
teaching. A man whose intellect and memory are stocked with knowledge may have all the vicious propensities of corrupt nature left in his bosom. Religion alone is able
to correct the lower inclinations of nature. Its influence must, however, be brought to bear on a man while he is young, in childhood, and it must go hand in hand with
the other branches of education, for a tree can be bent only when it is a sapling and not after the trunk has become rigid. The average moral standing of children who
are sent to a public school, where no religion is taught, may not differ greatly from the moral standing of those educated in a Catholic parochial school; but the difference will become noticeable in later life. The former will have little or no power to resist temptations, whereas the latter, through their religious training, will have such
power.
It seems superfluous to discuss the “school question,” as it has been completely settled by the ecclesiastical authorities. Papal encyclicals, both old and recent, and
decrees issued by provincial councils and diocesan synods, particularly by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore, have put an end to all controversy on this point.
Parishes and parents in particular, are strictly bound (sub gravi) to provide for the education of the rising Catholic generation by erecting and maintaining parochial
schools wherever it is not absolutely or morally impossible.
HISTORICAL TRIVIA ABOUT MT. ST. MICHAEL
Fr. Jean-Pierre DeSmet, S.J. was the first Jesuit missionary to the interior of the Pacific Northwest, coming for the first time in 1840. He converted
the Flatheads, the Coeur d’ Alenes, and other native tribes to the Catholic Faith. The anniversary of his birthday is this Friday, January 30. He was
born in Belgium in 1801, and died May 23, 1873, after an exhausting life for the salvation of souls.
DRESS CODE
Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, and in keeping with Christian modesty, please observe the following standards of dr ess:
Women and girls—A suitable hat or veil should be used, that covers at least the crown of the head (I Cor. 11:5, 6, 10). No slacks, no sleeveless, revealing, or low-cut clothing (the Marylike Crusade’s standard is that a dress be not cut more than two fingers’ width below pit of throat). Dresses & skirts
should cover knees when you are standing or sitting, and not have long slits in them. Strapless or spaghetti-strap clothing is always sinfully immodest
and should never be worn. Please avoid “straight skirts” as well, since they are usually form-fitting and tight.
Men and boys—Suit coat and tie, dress slacks, or other formal attire. Jeans, shorts, “flip-flops,” and other casual attire are inappropriate for church! Be
sure to also avoid clothing with logos and/or large lettering, as these can be quite distracting.
We welcome all our guests and visitors, and encourage you to read the blue pamphlet “Welcome to the Traditional Latin Mass” (available in the vestibule). It explains why we must completely avoid the modern Mass and liturgies introduced since Vatican II.

OBLIGATION TO HEAR A COMPLETE MASS
(reprinted in January, 2015 Seminary Newsletter “Adsum”)
By David Granfield, O.S.B.
Question: Could you give me a brief set of rules useful in instructing the faithful concerning the time that must be spent at Mass in order to fulfil the precept?
Answer: The basic rule is that one must attend a complete or integral Mass under pain
of sin. If a notable part either in terms of quantity or dignity is omitted, the sin will be
mortal. The following are the main gravely serious omissions:
A. From the beginning of the Mass to the Offertory inclusive.
B. From the beginning of the Mass to the Epistle, inclusive, plus from the
Communion to the end.
C. From the beginning of the Canon to the Consecration.
D. The Consecration.
E. From the Consecration through the Pater Noster.
If a person has missed a part of the Mass, he can and should satisfy his obligation
by being present at the same part of a subsequent Mass on the same day. A Mass going on at the same time [i.e. at a side altar] would not suffice. The Masses must be
successive, not simultaneous.
If a person comes late for the last Mass, he must stay till the end if he comes before the consecration, since he can fulfill his obligation essentially. There is a split in
opinion as to whether or not he is bound to remain if the consecration has already
taken place.

CENTENNIAL OPEN HOUSE – At the historic
Centennial Open House last weekend, we had
204 guests, of whom 31 were parishioners. We
had an amazing turnout of volunteer staff from
both parish and school. 34 were adult volunteers, and 31 were student volunteers from the
High School and Junior High (68% participation
from high school, and 75% participation from
junior high). Thank you all, volunteers. Very
proud and pleased with your efforts!
$1,115.45 was collected, which will be
used as seed money for additional Centennial
events and when the year is over, the remainder
will go towards our large restoration projects. It’s
a small drop in the bucket, but we have to start
somewhere, and as the saying goes, “God
helps those who help themselves.”
The spirit of cooperation and help was
amazing, and the Open House was a great
outreach to the local community. We heard
many great comments, compliments and positive feedback from the visitors. Thank God we
were able to share our traditional Catholic faith
and values with those who came.
January is the Month of the
Holy Name of Jesus.
