PRAYERS FOR THE CHURCH UNITY OCTAVE Official Prayer (ALL) Antiphon: That they all may be one, as Thou, Father, in Me and I in Thee; that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” (John 17:21) V. I say unto thee that thou art Peter, R. And upon this Rock I will build My Church. (PRIEST) Let us pray: O Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst say to Thine Apostles: peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; look not upon my sins, but upon the faith of Thy Church, and vouchsafe unto her that peace and unity which are agreeable to Thy Will. Who livest and reignest God forever and ever. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days during the octave of prayers for the unity of the Church from the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter in Rome to the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the end of the devout exercise. Other Prayers (ALL) Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is that all men should be saved and that none should perish, look upon the souls that are deceived by the guile of Satan, in order that the hearts of them that have gone astray may put aside all the perverseness of heresy, and, being truly repentant, may return to the unity of Thy truth. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. From the Roman Missal. An indulgence of 3 years. (ALL) Lord Jesus, merciful Saviour of the world, we humbly beseech Thee by Thy Most Sacred Heart, that all the straying sheep may turn unto Thee, the Shepherd and Bishop of their souls: Who livest and reignest world without end. Amen. An indulgence of 500 days (Pope St. Pius X, rescript in his own hand, Oct. 26, 1905, S. P. Ap., June 5, 1933. HISTORICAL TRIVIA ABOUT MT. ST. MICHAEL Fr. Joseph Cataldo, S.J., after whom “Cataldo Avenue” here in Spokane is most likely named, was the establisher and builder of St. Michael’s Mission. The mission was right here on Palmer Road, behind the Mount! He also bought the properties that would eventually become St. Aloysius Gonzaga College (1887) and Mt. St. Michael (1914). DRESS CODE Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, and in keeping with Christian modesty, please observe the following standards of dr ess: Women and girls—A suitable hat or veil should be used, that covers at least the crown of the head (I Cor. 11:5, 6, 10). No slacks, no sleeveless, revealing, or low-cut clothing (the Marylike Crusade’s standard is that a dress be not cut more than two fingers’ width below pit of throat). Dresses & skirts should cover knees when you are standing or sitting, and not have long slits in them. Strapless or spaghetti-strap clothing is always sinfully immodest and should never be worn. Please avoid “straight skirts” as well, since they are usually form-fitting and tight. Men and boys—Suit coat and tie, dress slacks, or other formal attire. Jeans, shorts, “flip-flops,” and other casual attire are inappropriate for church! Be sure to also avoid clothing with logos and/or large lettering, as these can be quite distracting. We welcome all our guests and visitors, and encourage you to read the blue pamphlet “Welcome to the Traditional Latin Mass” (available in the vestibule). It explains why we must completely avoid the modern Mass and liturgies introduced since Vatican II. Thought for the Week: From Pope Leo XIII’s Encylical on Marriage, Arcanum, Feb. 10, 1880: In the great confusion of opinions, however, which day by day is spreading more and more widely, it should further be known that no power can dissolve the bond of Christian marriage whenever this has been ratified and consummated; and that, of a consequence, those husbands and wives are guilty of a manifest crime who plan, for whatever reason, to be united in a second marriage before the first one has been ended by death. When, indeed, matters have come to such a pitch that it seems impossible for them to live together any longer, then the Church allows them to live apart, and strives at the same time to soften the evils of this separation by such remedies and helps as are suited to their condition; yet she never ceases to endeavor to bring about a reconciliation, and never despairs of doing so. But these are extreme cases; and they would seldom exist if men and women entered into the married state with proper dispositions, not influenced by passion, but entertaining right ideas of the duties of marriage and of its noble purpose; neither would they anticipate their marriage by a series of sins drawing down upon them the wrath of God. To sum up all in a few words, there would be a calm and quiet constancy in marriage if married people would gather strength and life from the virtue of religion alone, which imparts to us resolution and fortitude; for religion would enable them to bear tranquilly and even gladly the trials of their state, such as, for instance, the faults that they discover in one another, the difference of temper and character, the weight of a mother's cares, the wearing anxiety about the education of children, reverses of fortune, and the sorrows of life. Care also must be taken that they do not easily enter into marriage with those who are not Catholics; for, when minds do not agree as to the observances of religion, it is scarcely possible to hope for agreement in other things. Other reasons also proving that persons should turn with dread from such marriages are chiefly these: that they give occasion to forbidden association and communion in religious matters; endanger the faith of the Catholic partner; are a hindrance to the proper education of the children; and often lead to a mixing up of truth and falsehood, and to the belief that all religions are equally good.
