Prepare To Warm You Hands:
Red River Songwriter Festival!
The "4th Ever" Red River Songwriters Festival is set for this week,
January 22-24, and, if the weather outside is chilly, some of the finest
singer/songwriters on the planet will provide an indoor opportunity to
warm your souls with great music.
Scheduled to appear are Jeff Hanna, Matraca Berg, Lori McKenna,
Susan Gibson, Mike Addington, Jason Eady, Brandy Zdan, Josh Grider,
Drew Kennedy, Walt Wilkins, Kelley Mickwee, and Jana Pochop.
Performance venues will include the Motherlode, Lost Love Saloon
and Black Diamond Grill.
The event is the creation of Steve Heglund, owner of The Lodge at
Red River and the Motherlode, and is the winter "soulmate" of the popular Hot Chili Days/Cool Mountains Nights Music Festival and Cookoff
held annually in mid-August.
Heglund, an aficionado of live music and songwriters in particular,
organized the winter gathering of singer/songwriters in 2012 to chase
the first signs of cabin fever from the door of the Lost Love Saloon and
the Motherlode.
The event met with immediate success and has become a popular and
much-anticipated addition to the January landscape.
For information or reservations, check out www.redriversongs.com
or call 1-800-91-LODGE.
Center Stage
Jeff Hanna remembers how the music of Buddy Holly and the harmonies of the Everly Brothers had a profound effect on his life at the early
age of 8 or 9, an affect that propelled him to became a trendsetter as a
founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
The band's recording of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" became a
hit in 1971 and is considered a country classic, as is their 1987 #1 song
"Fishin' In The Dark."
Later recordings of traditional American folk music, the songs of Bob
Dylan and the unique music of The Band influenced not only Hanna
but an entire movement that married rock and roll with the sounds of
America's musical heritage.
The group's influence is most evident in the 1972 album Will The
Circle Be Unbroken, which featured Hanna and the band recording with
the icons of country music such as Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, Merle
Travis, Doc Watson, Jimmy Martin and Bashful Brother Oswald Kirby.
Hanna will be appearing in Red River with his wife, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Matraca Berg who penned "Strawberry
Wine," Song of the Year at the 1997 Country Music Association awards
and Martina McBride's #1 1995 hit "Wild Angels."

Go Lobos!
Some folks will tell you that I'm
easily excitable, getting revved
up to the point that my throttle
sometimes sticks and I have to go
to great measures to temper my
enthusiasm.
Usually a big, strong cup of
Sleepy Time tea will do the trick,
especially accompanied by some
melatonin.
(Special Thanks to Mo Siegel
founder and Godfather of Celestial Seasoning.)
Well, it ain't Sleepy Time right
now! Not yet!
I'm getting wound up about the
upcoming Jade Enterprises UNM
Lobos Invitational Ski meet that
is coming to town January 30-31.
The annual event is part of the
NCAA-sanctioned ski season that
culminates in the National Championships which will be held this
year in Lake Placid, New York,
twice home of the Winter Olympics.
The 2014 season found the
Lobos finishing on the 3rd step of
the National Championship podium. They are always in the hunt
for a national title and are the only
University of New Mexico sports
team to actually WIN the national
crown, a feat they accomplished
in 2004 under head coach and
program founder George Brooks.
George now heads up Ski New
3
Mexico, an organization with the
purpose of promoting snow skiing in the Land of Enchantment.
Here in Red River the meet
will be contested with the slalom
races at the Red River Ski Area
and the Nordic races at the Enchanted Forest Cross-Country
Ski Area.
It's been happening here for a
number of years now and I'm told
that participating collegiate teams
look forward to visiting and competing in Red River.
The 2015 Lobo season kicked
off with the Utah Invitational two
weeks ago. UNM placed 4th.
This week they will be at the
University of Colorado Spencer
James Nelson Memorial Invitational with the Nordic team at
Steamboat Springs and the Alpine
squad at Eldora, CO.
February will find them competing at the University of Alaska
Anchorage Invitational for 6 days!
It's a 3,600+ mile trip to Anchorage for the meet!
This year's team is a diverse and
interesting group, with athletes on
the UNM roster from Utah, Colorado, Oregon and Washington,
and competitors from Austria,
Finland, Germany, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia.
If you enjoy winter sports and
have never seen competitive skiing live and in person, you owe it

It is nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch world class athletes in action on skis. The sight

young men and women will be

Just watching them move

Oh, I just remembered: Get a

The cowbells are good, clean,
rowdy fun and add excitement to

The Lobos and Red River have
a special bond, born of respect
and a love of skiing. Red River is
their mountain home.
They are good people and are

It's Peace, Love & Mardi Gras:
Party Time In The Mountains!
The 2015 version of the award-winning Mardi Gras in the Mountains
is thundering down the pass and will officially arrive in Red River on
Thursday, February 12 and be in residence through Fat Tuesday, February 17. Preparations are in high gear for the 24th annual observance of
the biggest world-wide party on this planet and perhaps in our universe,
Red River Style!
The 6-day celebration of fun, food and frivolity will see dozens of
special events and parties for the kids of all ages. Just a few of the fun
activities on the schedule are nightly Grand Balls and bead tosses, including the Grand Costume Ball on Saturday night at the Red River
Conference Center, the Mixologist Contest, and the World's Smallest
But Most Fun Parade which will again find its way down Main Street.
(See Chamber Chat on the right for more info.)
The mystic Krewes who are responsible for sponsoring and conducting various aspects of the Fat Tuesday celebration are hard at work
and will continue their efforts to help provide energy and pure enjoyment for the thousands of visitors and Mardi Gras revelers who will be
in town.
This year the list of local Krewes who have already notified the
Red River Chamber of Commerce that they intend to be on hand include the Party Krewe, the Pirate Krewe, Krewe de Rouge, Steampunk
Krewe and possibly the Krewe de Voodoo, while out-of-town krewes
like the Cowboy Krewe from Texas, and the Krewe de Louisiane have
checked in. The New Mexico Film Krewe, which includes members of
the NM film industry, have made plans to return after their first visit to
Mountain Mardi Gras in 2014. They had fun and that is the idea, after
all.
Courtney Henderson, of Best Western Rivers Edge, will reign as King
Rex for 2015.
Musical delights this year will include Forest Huval and Bon Ton
from Louisiana, playing the Grand Balls each night, the Partizani Brass
Band – a New Orleans style brass band from Santa Fe – and Texan Chris
Watson bringing his brand of Southern Soul to town for the first time.

— Chamber Chat —
With Winter Carnival ending,
I still love to go around and see
the amazing ice sculptures that are
left. It was such a neat experience
to watch the ice carvers create
their sculptures and get to know
this wonderful group of artists. I
still cannot pick a favorite, there
are just too many to choose from.
And a special thanks to everyone
who sponsored an ice sculpture
this year.
The sponsors include: Red River Ski Area, Black Diamond Grill,
Auslander Condos, Capo’s Restaurant, Best Western River’s Edge, Brett’s Bistro/Lifts West Condos,
The Jewelry Lady, Mountain Treasures, Riverside Lodge and Cabins,
The Knot Hole, Bull O’ the Woods Saloon, Main St. Medical, and Lost
Love Saloon/Texas Reds.
We now look forward to Mardi Gras. This year’s theme is Peace, Love,
and Mardi Gras. Planning is in the works for this bead throwing, music
loving Mardi Gras event. If you haven’t joined a Krewe, and want to, there
are many in town you can join, or you can start your own. We have several T-Shirt and Music Sponsorships still available. If you are interested
please call us at the Chamber 575-754-2366 and we will get you set up.
This year we will kick off Mardi Gras with the Glowstick Parade
on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Yesterday’s Diner. We will continue
walking down the street in our parade following the Wild Tchoupitoula
to the Motherlode. When we reach our destination we will write our sorrows down and burn them along with the Wild Tchoupitoula. The burning of the Wild Tchoupitoula will be at 7:30 p.m. Make sure you come
out for this unique experience.
Write it down! Make a note! The Grand Ball will be on February 14,
2015 at 8:00 p.m. Valentine’s Day. Make sure you bring your sweetheart out
to enjoy this event. Wear your best costume because we are having a costume contest for best male, female, couple, and children’s costumes. Music
will be provided by the great Cajun band Forest Huval & Bon Temps.
As I get ready to celebrate my One Year anniversary in Red River,
I can’t help but look at all the amazing people I have met, and the fun
events I have been a part of. I think Red River is a very special place to
all of us for many reasons. Some, like myself, have been coming here
since we were kids. Others have grown up here or have moved here to
enjoy the snow or work.
I have realized in my year here that we are not just a small town, but a
large family. Many times I have seen people come to the aid of someone
in the community or a tourist who needs help. You do not find this attitude everywhere, and that makes me realize how special our community
is. In Red River it seems there is always someone willing to help.

DIRECTIONS:
Combine potatoes, carrots, leeks, broth and soup base.
Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover.

By Alyce Lindberg Densow
"The simplicity of winter has a
deep moral. The return of nature,
after such a career of splendor
and prodigality, to habits so simple and austere, is not lost upon
either the head or the heart. It is
the philosopher coming back
from the banquet and the wine, to
a cup of water and a crust of
bread." –John Burroughs, Winter
Sunshine, 1879
"Bread and milk for breakfast,
And woolen frocks to wear, A
crumb for Robin Redbreast On the
cold days of the year." –Someone
And on the coldest, snowiest
morning of the year, one kid cannot find his mittens, another
seems to have lost his boots, and
yet another swears someone has
stolen her hat. Multiply that by
two if you have more than three
kids, but fewer than eight, and
the kids may never get to school
on time.
And you, good old Mom, already have the screaming meemies, and it's only 7:30 AM. Good
old Dad has already disappeared.
Where are the mates to all
those mittens purchased in late
October? Why is it that every kid
in Red River, New Mexico – and
thc USA – now has only one right
hand blue mitten, one right hand
green mitten, one very dark grey
right hand white mitten ... Why is
it they always lose the left hand
mittens? Why is it they lose mittens at all??
If your kids are very small,
under age four perhaps, or raring
to get to kindergarten, you might
coerce them into wearing the
right hand blue one and the right
hand green one turned inside-out
as a very avant garde pair, but
don't try it on a bigger kid. The
howling, yowling is definitely
not worth it.
Your nerves are already shattered just listening to them as
they try to find their hats, scarves,
boots, galoshes, snow pants,
sweaters, jackets, books, homework assignments, lunch money,
and the book they better bring
back to the reading corner before
teacher has fits ...
It's the same with hats, which
seem to get lost at the same rate
as left hand mittens. No boy, any
age, is going to school in one of
his sister's hats, after losing all of
his, even if it's a generic ski cap
and even if his best friend couldn't
tell the difference. It's been on his
Sister's Head - eeyowww!
Scarves never seem to hang
around very long either. Wouldn't
you think that something you tie
around the kid's neck in the AM
could manage to get home in the
afternoon? Hah! Nothing that
isn't glued to the kid's body is going to get home in the afternoon.
You can sew a long ribbon or
string or rope (a thick one) to the
mittens, string them through the
kid's jacket sleeves and still the
mittens get lost. You can pull the
kid's hat down around his ears so
tight he can't see a thing – and
he'll come home bareheaded that
afternoon. You can safety pin the
mittens to the sleeves and somehow the safety pins get lost right
along with the mittens.
Winter has got to be the toughest time in the world to be a
mother. In summer, good old
summer, you can let them run in
the same shorts for three or four
days, without any other mothers
shaking their heads, because they
have let their guard down, too,
and they're also rejoicing that
mitten-Iosing¬season is way way
way far off.
While we're on the subject of
losing stuff, I don't even want to
know what happens to socks.
Even as we speak, I have, in my
own private sock drawer, one
navy, one green, one black, one
stripe, one checkered, one pale
pink and one that never belonged
to me in the first place. All pa-
tiently waiting for their mates to
return.
Which is Never Going to Happen. Lost Socks Never Return.
The sock trolls are sitting in a
bush somewhere, giggling their
socks off, and holding your unmatched socks in their little troll
hands.
Well – if it isn't trolls – would
you care to explain to me why
socks disappear from your washer-dryer even faster than mittens,
hats, scarves, boots, galoshes???
And to think, when I was a
trusting little kid, Grandmother
and I used to set bowls of porridge out for the trolls so they
wouldn't play tricks on us.
So – it's a conspiracy? Probably
by the Clothing Manufacturers'
Assn. Of America, to confiscate
mittens, socks, etcetera and etcetera, and hold them until they are
either outgrown or the odd mates
are thrown away in a fit of tidiness
by the Mothers of America (unorganized, unpaid and plagued).
While the Fathers of America
(also unorganized, unpaid, but not
half so plagued because they have
the Mothers of America to act as
buffers), are hollering some morning, "Who stole my socks???"
(In my house, when our kids
were growing up, it would have
been His Kids. Later, it was
grandsons, who loved his old
caps they fished out of the trash,
and old sweaters and old army
jackets –anything crusted with
grease and dirt. Kids are a barrel
of laughs. Especially His Kids
and/or Grandkids!!)

Doc was just getting up to leave
the philosophy counter as Herb
walked in. Herb was grinning and
flexing muscles and had the look
of eagles in his eyes. We stared.
“Herb,” said Doc. “You know,
you can overdo a good thing.”
“Why Doc … whatever do you
mean?”
“I realize that getting more exercise is your resolution for the
new year, but a man your age …
you need to pace yourself a little,
that’s all. Don’t try to get in shape
all at once.”
“Why Doc, I’ve never felt better in my life. Hey, you were
so right to get me on this exercise kick. I’ve been meaning
to thank you. It’s just what I’ve
been needing. What would you
think about my playing some
football in the spring? I mean,
it’s just touch football, but I
miss the ol’ razz-matazz, you
know?”
Doc shook his head sadly and
walked out. Herb started laughing
and sat down with us and flipped
his cup over for his morning eye
opener.
“What was that all about, Herb?”
Dud asked.
“A little joke I’m playing on
Doc, that’s all,” Herb said. “You
remember how Doc has been on
my case to get more exercise and
slim down some? Well, there was
only one way to shut him up, so I
started running. I bought a sweat
suit and started running. I run past
his house each morning. Then,
about an hour later, I run past his
house the other direction, huffing
and puffing and looking at my
watch.”
“An hour? You run for an hour
each morning?”
“Of course not,” Herb said,
laughing. “I run past Doc’s house
then walk the block to the library.
An hour later, I run past Doc’s
house and then walk two blocks
home.”
We stared at him.
“What?” he said. “You know
Doc’s going to worry about me
one way or the other. I just thought
I’d change it up a bit.”

The Golem of Hollywood
Jonathan Kellerman
A burned-out L.A. detective . . .
a woman of mystery who is far
more than she seems . . . a grotesque, ancient monster bent on a
mission of retribution. When these
three collide, a new standard of
suspense is born.
The legend of the Golem of
Prague has endured through the
ages, a creature fashioned by a sixteenth-century rabbi to protect his
congregation, now lying dormant in
the garret of a synagogue. But the
Golem is dormant no longer.
Detective Jacob Lev wakes one
morning, dazed and confused: He
seems to have picked up a beautiful woman in a bar the night before, but he can’t remember anything about the encounter, and
before he knows it, she has gone.
But this mystery pales in comparison to the one he’s about to be
called on to solve. Newly reassigned to a Special Projects squad
he didn’t even know existed, he’s
sent to a murder scene far up in
the hills of Hollywood Division.
There is no body, only an unidentified head lying on the floor of a
house. Seared into a kitchen counter nearby is a single word: the
Hebrew for “justice.”
Detective Lev is about to embark on an odyssey — through
Los Angeles, through many parts
of the United States, through London and Prague, but most of all,
through himself. All that he has
believed to be true will be upended — and not only his world, but
the world itself, will be changed.
The Chocolate Clown
Corpse
complete stranger was accused of
bursting Moe Davidson’s balloons.
But it’s been a month since the
miserable shop owner of Clowning
Around was killed, and everybody’s moving on, including Lee
Woodyard. Her chocolate shop,
TenHuis Chocolade, is next door to
Moe’s shuttered tourist trap, and
it’s giving her delicious ideas to
expand. But over whose dead
body?
Moe’s widow, Emma, and her
two stepchildren list the property
for sale, but when Lee tours the
building, she finds Emma unconscious. Now Lee wonders whether Moe’s real killer is still at large
and is taking care of unfinished
business. Unfortunately, since the
town is celebrating Clown Week,
there are so many potential suspects in grease paint and floppy
shoes it’s not even funny.
For Lee, protecting Emma, freeing an innocent man, and rolling
out hundreds of her clown-themed
chocolates is a pretty tall order. But
so is staying alive long enough to
find out which one of her neighbors is a killer in dis guise.

Baffin Island: Husband-andwife team Sami and Remi Fargo
are on a climate-control expedition in the Arctic, when to their
astonishment they discover a Viking ship in the ice, perfectly preserved – and filled with pre-Columbian artifacts from Mexico.
How can that be? As they
plunge into their research, tantalizing clues about a link between
the Vikings and the legendary
Toltec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl – and a fabled object
known as the Eye of Heaven – begin to emerge. But so do many
dangerous people. Soon the Fargos find themselves on the run
through jungles, temples, and secret tombs, caught between treasure hunters, crime cartels, and
those with a far more personal
motivation for stopping them. At
the end of the road will be the solution to a thousand-year-old mystery – or death.

Revenge is sweet for a killer on

Everyone who knew the bozo
