Humbled By The Endeavor to Persevere
Willi Hopper came to Red River 30 years ago, when his daughter was
born, staying at his father-in-law, Harvey Large’s, Deer Lodge. A musician/songwriter, freestyle surfer in Hawaii and New York, a poet and
sketch artist and a carpenter, his latest venture was something he’d never
done: run a marathon at age 64, “before I get too old.”
“My sister, Gonda Dragan, and all her kids are triathletes,” Willi says.
“She does the Ironman thing in Hawaii and inspired me when I spent
some time with her in Fort Collins.” He had just turned 62. His sister
bought him running shoes, a shirt, shorts, and a cap for his birthday and
said “Start running.” So he did.
“I got about 100-200 yards and slowed down. I thought ‘What?’ It
really was a trip. So I started walking and running, walking and running,
every day religiously, starting with a half hour, then doubled it.”
He trained at half that distance because “I read that the full thing beats
you up, so running about 15 miles will work. I did 13 miles, my lucky
number.” He decided he was ready for 26.2 miles.
“It was totally humbling,” says Willi, who ran in the 12th Annual P.F.
Chang Rock & Roll Arizona Marathon in mid-January with 22,000 other
runners. “The amount of people who passed me, people you wouldn’t
think could walk 100 feet!” It was at mile 19 that he hit The Wall.
“My calves totally locked up, I couldn’t walk. I stumbled to the side,
sat down...” and was so sick that motorcycle officers told him they had
called an ambulance. “I was okay with that: Somebody come get me. I
thought that I had run as far as I could, done my best. Then a lady gave
me some electrolyte drink. I stood, said ‘thanks’ but I’m out of here!”
He finished the final 7 miles, thinking about surfing for inspiration.
When he was done, “in 6.5 hours,” he decided he could do better. He
plans to enter the Red River Marathon in May and the Duke City Marathon this fall.

I was taking one final glance at
Facebook before going to bed at 1
pm or so when I saw Tom Yate’s
post that it was snowing hard.
I had to look out and see. Sure
enough, not only had it snowed but
it was still coming down hard, just
as Tom reported.
Guess the TV Weather Geeks
were correct yesterday. They actually called it and I’m glad to hear
it. Getting mountain weather right
is a tough job and when they are
correct... Whoopie, I say.
It’s like Christmas Day, when you
come down the stairs in the morning
and, looking through the storm door,
everything is covered in snow. Not
just a coating, either, but substantial
amounts clinging to the evergreens
and burying the streets.
My first thought was wondering how much the high meadows
had received. They usually get
more than the valley and I’m hoping that’s the case, making a great
time for the snowmobile tour companies.
Then, I thought that the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Area
was going to have a great Just Desserts next Saturday. I may have to
go and take a camera.
As for the Red River Ski Area, I
could almost hear the laughter.
It was 7:30 a.m. and I realized
I had not heard the snowplows on
Highway 38. I was sure they had
been at work, the way they always
do in a storm, but the snow was so
heavy that it created a quieting effect in the valley.
A trip to the back door and it became apparent that the afternoon
would be occupied with excavating the cars parked on the street.
The van was hopelessly buried
and, with little traction on slick
surfaces, cleaning it off isn’t a
good use of resource.
Namely, my huffing and puffing
and sweating seemed pointless.
The CRV was the focus of
my snow removal. Tactics were
simple: start it and turn the heater
and defroster on full wind tunnel
mode.
3
Give it 10 minutes and apply
the scraper with the looooong
handle. Make sure the gloves
are snug and tucked into the coat
sleeve.
There’s always spray stuff that
de-ices if all else fails.
The tactics had to wait, though.
There were other things to think
about and eventually to do, things
to make the day enjoyable and
complete.
How much snow did we actually receive?
The lights were still on so the
snow hadn’t brought down any
power lines so I fired up the computer and hit the net.
First stop was NOAA to see
what was going on in Northern
New Mexico.
Snow forecasts and snow reports were interesting. Red River
Ski Area reported 17” by 3:30 pm
Sunday, with Enchanted Forest reporting 14.”
February is traditionally a good
snow month in the Red River
area and this February was finally
showing it’s legs before the arrival
of March.
Barometer, visibility, wind
speed and gusts were what you
would expect from such a storm.
Nice and looking good for a winter
resort/recreation area.
Extended forecast was nifty,
too, with snow in the works for
most of the week. This indicated
that I would not be going to Taos
unless needlessly provoked.
Intellicast was fun, too, for the radar was interesting and the forecasts
were mostly in agreement with NO
AA.
Albuquerque TV webs varied,
as they always do, but Red River
seemed to be the place getting the
most snow and that is a good thing
for us, especially if the TV folks
will TELL the world and people
will come to our valley to have
some fun.
I must chuckle. I think of all
the visitors who came to play in
the snow over the weekend and
wonder how many of those folks
who were planning to leave Sunday morning actually made it out
of the valley.
I hope some of them decided to
stay in town and enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime in the form of
a major snowfall which provided
the chance to be snowed in. Yeah,
call the Boss on the cell and tell
‘em, “I’m stuck, can’t get home,
get there when I can!”
Better yet, take a selfie with
tons of snow for a background.
A picture is worth 10 billion
words when it comes to ditching
work.
As I write this, it is still snowing.
The next door neighbor’s birdbath
isn’t covered but that may not be
the case much longer.
What a great day in Red River!

NM Foresty Offers Seedlings For The Future
Thousands of trees are still available to New Mexico landowners
for spring planting through New Mexico State Forestry’s Conservation
Seedling Program, according to Conservation Seedling Forester Carol
Bada.
“With winter coming to an end and the warmer days of spring just
around the corner, it will soon be the perfect time to plant tree seedlings across many parts of the state,” said Bada. “Planting native tree
and shrub species help rehabilitate areas affected by fires, protect livestock and crops and promote energy conservation on private and public
lands.”
More than 40,000 seedlings are available to landowners who own at
least one acre of land in New Mexico and who agree to use the trees for
conservation purposes including erosion control, wildlife habitat, reforestation, riparian restoration, windbreak establishment, tree plantations
and other conservation needs. Seedlings are available on-line at www.
nmforestry.com and by mail-in order form. All proceeds are re-invested
into the program. Seedling sales will end on April 17, 2015.
Tree and shrub species available include: Afghan pine, Arizona cypress, ponderosa pine, Austrian pine, aspen, Nanking cherry, golden
currant and desert willow as well as many others. Limited supplies are
available for riparian and mixed conifer packages, lacebark elm, Manchurian apricot, narrowleaf cottonwood, wax currant and white fir.
Bare root seedlings are sold in bundles of 25, with a minimum order
of 50 plants for $62. Small container seedlings of one-year-old plants
are sold in 10-cubic-inch containers in minimum lots of 49 of the same
species for $70.
Mail-in application forms may be downloaded from the State Forestry
website. Secure on-line ordering is also available at www.nmforestry.
com. Payment with a Visa, Master Card or Discover Card is accepted.
Checks are accepted with mail-in order forms. Anyone who experiences
problems downloading the application form can contact the New Mexico Forestry Division at (505) 476-3325(505) 476-3325 and it will be
sent by mail. Three methods of delivery are available ($5 handling fee):
UPS; pick up in Santa Fe; or pick up at designated locations throughout
New Mexico.

As Red River reaches out to the
many generations who have visited
over the years, it’s always good to
know that even the youngest can
accompany their parents and have
a great time in the mountains!
For instance, when available,
the Red River Conference Center
offers community usage. This week
it will be open from 8:00 am – 5:00
pm for “play.” This includes basketball, (and this past week pickle
ball), inside children’s “toys” –
slide, various riding toys, puzzles,
etc. The Conference Center is also
big enough to bring sliders, gliders,
and bicycles to ride. Got cabin fever with the cold and snow? Kids
need some exercise to work off all
that energy? Come to the Red River Conference Center! Just be sure
and stop by the Visitor Center first
to sign a waiver.
Red River also has playground
equipment in Brandenburg Park as
well as in Mallette Canyon Park.
Both parks have picnic benches and
plenty of grassy areas for a game of
catch or tag. Brandenburg Park has
sidewalks throughout the park for
even the youngest cyclist to ride or
practice their skateboarding.
The Red River Ski and Summer
Area offers winter snow tubing each
afternoon at 4:15 pm. Reservations
can be made online or in person.
www.redriverskiarea.com
The
Youth Ski Center at the ski area has
full day ski/snowboard camp for
ages 10-12 years. Ski lessons are
available for ages 4-12 years. Day
care is available for ages 6 months
to 4 years. Teens and adults can also
schedule private or group lessons at
the ski area.
Playground equipment or snow
tubing not your “thang”? There are
yoga classes at the Motherlode Saloon and women’s coffee is every
Wednesday, 10:00 am, at the Community House. Visit the Lost Love
Saloon, Motherlode Saloon or the
Bull o’ the Wood Saloon for live
music on Friday and Saturday
nights. Jeff Fagan plays on Thursday nights at the Black Diamond
Grill. For more information about

CRANBERRY CHICKEN
This is a new recipe for me. I made it tonight and will definitely make it again! It’s so short and so easy and so good…
what a great combination!
INGREDIENTS:
4 chicken breasts, skinless, boneless
½ package onion soup mix
1 can whole cranberry sauce
DIRECTIONS:
Spray baking dish, sprinkle 1 Tbsp of onion soup mix on
each chicken breast. Spoon whole cranberry sauce on each
chicken breast. Cover baking dish with foil and bake in 350
degree oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until the juices of
the chicken breast, pierced with the tip of a knife, runs clear.
That’s it! I’d serve with cornbread dressing and steamed broccoli!
While speaking of chicken dishes, here’s one I make often
and heartily recommend. J. Binford Bell showcased it in a
past column of hers. Just in case you didn’t see it, here it is
again! Some things are so worth repeating!
CHICKEN CAESAR TETRAZZINI
INGREDIENTS:
8 oz uncooked linguine
2 cups cooked chicken or more - BTW, I buy a roasted
chicken at the deli, remove skin and bones
1 cup chicken broth +2 Tbsp
1 cup bottled Caesar salad dressing
1 cup sliced Portobello mushrooms, sautéed
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 Tbsp dry bread crumbs (I like Panko)
2 Tbsp butter
DIRECTIONS:
Cook linguine according to package directions. Combine
chicken broth and Caesar dressing in a large mixing bowl and
whisk until blended. Add cooked linguini and fold into mixture. Slice mushrooms and sauté in 2 Tbsp chicken broth and
2 Tbsp butter until softened. Add mushrooms and chicken
into linguine and stir. Pour into sprayed, large 2-quart casserole dish. Mix bread crumbs and cheese in a small bowl and
sprinkle over top. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 25
minutes or until it’s hot and bubbly.

I don’t know – somewhere
around the middle of winter in
Red River, New Mexico, way up
in the mountains at 8750 altitude, you get the notion that
winter is really not the greatest
idea Mother Nature ever came
up with. It lasts So Long here –
from November until April –
then sometimes we get our biggest blizzards in April, proof that
Mother Nature has a bizarre
sense of humor.
In November you had fantasies of making snow men and
angels with your family. You
went all-out for Thanksgiving
and Christmas celebrating. In
January you rearranged the entire house, started writing a journal, put all those pictures into
albums and just about turned
yourself inside out with domesticity. In February you looked
forward to the fun and surprise
of Valentine’s Day (maybe he
would spring for those darling
little diamond earrings...) Now,
here you are, rethinking Winter
and Snow People and Mother
Nature and Snow in General and
Marriage and Domesticity and
Children and dogs and cats and
lakes of melting snow all over
the house and people who NEVER take off their boots in the
entryway but tromp all through
the place, dripping all over the
fresh-washed floors and freshvac’d carpets.
And you curl up on the couch,
wrapped in a quilt, a stash of
chocolate hidden underneath,
fantasizing about a bikini on a
beach in Acapulco. And maybe
you won’t come home till Memorial Day. Make that July
Fourth. In Red River it sometimes hails and sleets and snows
on Memorial Day.
I know exactly how you feel.
Every year of my life I have
lived through Long Winters – in
Wisconsin and in Red River NM.
Once I spent a January week in
Puerto Morales, Old Mexico,
loveliest week of my life amidst
birds singing and tropical plants
blooming and long walks on
sunny beaches – No Snow – to
come home to a screaming blizzard in Albuquerque and more of
same in Red River.
Personally I don’t think old
Einstein ever spent a winter in a
snowy place or he’d revise his
stand on nature. And I think that
old Connolly guy got it right
about marriage, even if he was
only kidding.
Middle of winter is a real
threat to the institution of marriage and the family. Instead of
thinking of winter as a ”cozy respite,” as one writer put it, you
are thinking mayhem and screaming meemies.
The only thing that will save
you and your institution is PARTIES. Yes, parties, but simple
parties. Soups -Stews -stuff you
can serve in a bowl with a spoon.
Maybe cornbread. A decadent
chocolate dessert. Spiced tea and
strong coffee. Simple. Games.
Charades. Fun stuff.
Plan one party a week until
winter bites the dust. You don’t
have to give all those parties at
your house. Enlist all the friends
to pick a week to host. It’s not so
tough to bulldoze the house once
each.
We did it a long time ago here
in Red River. Called ourselves
the “Galumchuckits.” Saved our
marriages. Welded our friendships.
I’ll never forget the time my
husband and I served a wild
game dinner of roasted venison
and antelope. As we brought in
the entree, our friends broke out
into “Home on the Range.”
My favorite version is still,
“Oh, give me a home where the
antelope roam and I’ll show you a
dir-ir-ty house...” But I digress.
This column’s in memory of
the Galumchuckits and the Long
Winters!

in the Colorado music scene.
Ben Marshal’s love for country
music made it easy to adapt to gospel and local southern radio, after
moving to Eastern Oklahoma in
1992. He learned how to play the
harmonica, trumpet, baritone, guitar, and even a few easy beats on
his uncle’s Ludwig drum set, by
the age of 15.
While in college he played
acoustic guitar and sang original
songs in addition to cover tunes, in
places like North Carolina, South
Carolina, Arkansas, South Florida,
Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado,
before settling in Soonerland.
His latest CD is entitled Ben
Marshal, Extended Play and is a
great example of why he’s gaining
genuine fans across the country.
Feb. 28, March 6, The Bull
Jeremy Bertram was raised
in Eastern Kentucky with a life
long passion for music. Listeners
are sure to hear influences of the
Marshall Tucker Band, Van Morrison, Bush, and Hank Williams
Jr. as he creates a sound much his
own. His high energy showmanship and southern down-to-earth
charm make it impossible not to
love him.
February 28, Motherlode
Luke Wade’s recent appearance
on The Voice gave the world a look
at a talent that has been known in
Be sure and catch the Ben Marshal Band at the Bull.
March 17, The Bull
The Salt Cedar Rebels, out of
Amarillo, are bringing an Outlaw
Country and Southern Rock rebellion with them to every stop along
the road. They are in the thick of
the battle to bring the Country
genre back to its roots and add a
healthy dose of Southern Rock
along the way. Each show brings
a new energy and excitement that
gets each audience on its feet,
singing and dancing along.
Spring Break - Local Bands
In addition to the Motherlode
house band 2$ Horse playing on
weekends, Mike Addington will
be appearing at the Lost Love
Saloon in Texas Reds Restaurant
throughout the Spring Break.
Black Diamond Grill will also
feature Jeff Fagan, Mike Smith,
and Ry Taylor live and having

By Slim Randles
When Steve and Dud got up
to go get a paper, it left just Doc
and Bert sitting at the philosophy
counter of the Mule Barn truck
stop. Bert turned his head and
smirked a little, being careful
not to let Doc see him. Doc also
didn’t see Dud outside, punching in a number on his cell phone
while Steve stood by as a cheerleader.
“Doc,” said Loretta, filling the
coffee cups, “phone call for you,
Hon.”
“Here? Okay…” Doc walked
over to the cash register and
picked up the phone.
“This here Doc?” said the caller.
“The Doc what lost his squirrel?”
“Uh …” Doc looked around for
help. There was none. “Yes. Yes
it is.”
“Found your dang squirrel
here, Doc. That reward thing still
good?”
“Well … yes.”
“Five dollars and a quarter, right?
Now is that cash or check? I don’t
take no checks.”
Doc is looking all around and
looks wilderness-type lost. “Cash
I guess.”
“Only thing is, Doc. Need to be
sure this is your squirrel, right? So
can you describe him for me?”
“He’s … gray.”
“All gray squirrels are gray, now,
ain’t that right? How about any
distinguishing marks? Tattoos?”
“No tattoos.”
“So far so good. Now you said
in the ad his name is Chipper.
Well, I called him Chipper and
the son of a gun bit me.”
“He did?”
“What I mean to ask here, Doc,
is … did you and your squirrel get
along? No squirrel problems? He
looks like he needs a square meal
to me. You feed him good?”
“What?”
“You know … like Squirrel
Chow free choice, or did you put
him on a nut ration? I mean, he
ate like there was no tomorrow.
Dang near ate up the whole five
dollars and a quarter reward money in squirrel food.”
Steve and Dud walked back into
the café, then, with the cell phone
still at Dud’s ear, and the laughing
began.
“You were right all along, Doc,”
said Bert. “In winter, everyone
can use a good hoax.”
Doc bought the coffee.

Bad Country
C. B. Makenzie
Winner of the Tony Hillerman
Prize and a finalist for the Edgar
Award for Best First Novel, Bad
Country is a debut mystery set in
the Southwest starring a former
rodeo cowboy turned private investigator, told in a transfixingly
original style.
Rodeo Grace Garnet lives with
his old dog in a remote corner of
Arizona known to locals as El
Hoyo. He doesn’t get many visitors in The Hole, but a body
found near his home has drawn
police attention to his front door.
The victim is not one of the many
undocumented immigrants who
risk their lives to cross the border
in Rodeo’s harsh and deadly
“backyard,” but a member of a
major Southwestern Indian tribe,
whose death is part of a mysterious rompecabeza — a classic
crime puzzler — that includes
multiple murders, cold-blooded
betrayals, and low-down scheming, with Rodeo caught in the
middle.
Retired from the rodeo circuit
and scraping by on piecework as
a bounty hunter, warrant server,
and divorce snoop, Rodeo doesn’t
have much choice but to say yes
when offered an unusual case. An
elderly Indian woman from his
own Reservation has hired him to
help discover who murdered her
grandson, but she seems strangely uninterested in the results. Her
attitude seems heartless, but as
Rodeo pursues interrelated cases,
he learns that the old woman’s
indifference is nothing compared
to true hatred, and aligned against
a variety of creative and cruel
foes, the hard-pressed PI is about
to discover just how far hate can
go.
The Children Act
Ian McEwan
Fiona Maye is a leading High
Court judge who presides over
cases in the family court. She is
renowned for her fierce intelligence, exactitude, and sensitivity.
But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic
strife. There is the lingering regret
of her childlessness, and now her
marriage of thirty years is in crisis.
At the same time, she is called
on to try an urgent case: Adam, a
beautiful seventeen-year-old boy,
is refusing for religious reasons
the medical treatment that could
save his life, and his devout parents echo his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court
overrule sincerely expressed faith?
In the course of reaching a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the
hospital — an encounter that stirs
long-buried feelings in her and
powerful new emotions in the
boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both.
The Slow Regard of
Silent Things
Patrick Rothfuss
Deep below the University,
there is a dark place. Few people
know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned
rooms. A young woman lives
there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing,
snug in the heart of this forgotten
place.
Her name is Auri, and she is
full of mysteries.
The Slow Regard of Silent
Things is a brief, bittersweet
glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers
a chance to see the world through
Auri’s eyes. And it gives the reader a chance to learn things that
only Auri knows....
In this book, Patrick Rothfuss
brings us into the world of one of
The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most
enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story
of a broken girl trying to live in a
broken world.
The Intercept
Dick Wolf
Days before the July Fourth
holiday and the dedication of One
World Trade Center at Ground
Zero, an incident aboard a commercial jet reminds everyone involved that vigilance saves lives.
But New York Police detective
Jeremy Fisk — from the department’s Intelligence Division, a
well-funded anti-terror unit modeled upon the CIA — suspects
that the event is a warning sign
that another, potentially more extraordinary scheme has been set
in motion. So when a passenger
from the same plane disappears
into the crowds of Manhattan,
it’s up to Fisk and his partner
Krina Gersten to find him before
the celebrations begin... And time
is running out.

My Sister’s Grave
Tracy Crosswhite has spent
twenty years questioning the facts
surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial
that followed. She doesn’t believe
that Edmund House — a convicted rapist and the man condemned
for Sarah’s murder — is the guilty
party. Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy
became a homicide detective with
the Seattle PD and has dedicated
her life to tracking down killers.
When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their
hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington
State, Tracy is determined to
get the answers she’s been seeking. As she searches for the real
killer, she unearths dark, longkept secrets that will forever
change her relationship to her
past — and open the door to
deadly danger.
