INSPIRING ONE GENERATION
TO EMPOWER THE NEXT
Today, Tara Robertson is a woman filled with hope.
But that wasn’t always the case.
In 2004, she was 19, pregnant, in a rocky relationship with her baby’s father
and living with her parents. “I was feeling hopeless,” says Tara. Then, she
heard about Jeremiah Program.
“My cousin was enrolled in the program and doing really well,” explains
Tara. “She had support, a nice apartment and her children were doing
great. She was also hopeful about the future.”
Tara wanted to have hope, too. More importantly, she wanted to be able
to give hope to her child. However, she wasn’t sure Jeremiah Program
was right for her. “Not only was I a new mother, I was going to be
living on my own for the first time and wasn’t sure I could handle all the
demands,” says Tara.
In hindsight, applying to Jeremiah Program was the best decision
Tara could have made, for herself and for her daughter, Erika, now 7.
They had a safe, affordable place to live. Erika received quality early
childhood education, and Tara received the support she needed to continue
her education: she studied nursing and graduated as an RN in December
2008. A few months later, she landed a great job as a nurse manager.
“I’ve been employed at the same place for two and a half years,” says Tara.
“To think I thought being a single mother going to school was difficult. I
had no idea back then how hard it was going to be as a single mother
working full time!”
Despite the challenges, Tara loves her life. “I know everybody thinks their
child is the best in the world, but mine truly is,” says Tara. “She is so sweet.
When I feel like the meanest mommy in the world, she looks at me like I
could do no wrong. She keeps me going strong every day.”
Erika, age 7
As evidence of her strength, Tara bought a house last year. “It is so cute and
comfortable,” she says, and serves as a symbol of her hope for the future.
“I feel so grateful to everyone involved with Jeremiah Program,” says Tara.
“Thanks to them, everything I hoped for when I was pregnant has come
true. I graduated from college, I’m working in a field I love and I own my
home. What’s more, Erika is healthy, happy and starting to realize her own
hopes. She got a kitten a few months ago and now dreams of learning
cursive writing and even getting her driver’s license.”

A PROVEN MODEL THAT TRANSFORMS
LIVES TWO GENERATIONS AT A TIME
Research shows that a mother’s level of education is
crucial to her ability to find career-track employment
and earn a living wage. It’s also crucial in determining
how much education her children will receive, as well
as how much money they’ll earn as adults.
However, many single mothers never get the education they need.
That’s because they can’t afford to go to school and still provide for
their children. Even in the best of times, most must defer their own
dreams to deal with harsh economic realities that include temporary jobs,
inadequate benefits, unstable housing and lack of quality childcare.
But these aren’t the best of times. In fact, for many single women,
they are the worst of times, which is why Jeremiah Program—and
the two-generation approach we take to ending poverty—is more
important now than ever.
Having successfully achieved their education goals, women leave the
program with full-time, living-wage careers and the life skills necessary
to be self-sufficient and successful. As a result, they and their children
no longer need the social services on which they once relied.

A MESSAGE FROM
OUR LEADERSHIP
Dear Friends:
Hope is inherited.
Jeremiah Program and the mothers we serve are bringing this simple
statement to life every single day for dozens of children. Many of
those children came to us as infants. Some are now entering high
school. All have benefited from Jeremiah Program’s safe and loving
environment. We couldn’t be prouder of them, their mothers and
their accomplishments.
For more than a decade our efforts have been instrumental in helping
more than 360 children inherit hope—for themselves, their futures and the
world in which we live. Together, we are proving that the right help and
support can end poverty, two generations at a time.
Our reputation as a leader in this important area is growing nationally.
We regularly receive calls from across the country and from other
organizations interested in replicating our proven model. As testimony
to our thought leadership, we were invited to join the Aspen Institute’s
Ascend program, which you can learn more about on the next page.
Why is our work so important? As a recent Ascend report indicates, all
parents have hopes and dreams for their children. Yet, those who live in
poverty are often forced to set aside these hopes and dreams in order
to deal with harsh economic realities.
By providing single mothers and their children with a safe, affordable
place to live and by ensuring they get a quality education that prepares
them for career-track employment, Jeremiah Program is making a
difference in Minnesota, as well as in Texas, where we are now expanding.
Currently we serve a handful of single mothers enrolled in Austin
Community College, and—thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the
Moody Foundation—we’ll be opening an Austin campus in 2013 to
serve up to 24 single mothers and their children.
Thank you to everyone who is helping Jeremiah Program succeed.
Your contributions are enormous and fill us with hope for our own future,
as well as that of the women, children and communities we serve.
With gratitude,

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2011
We’re proud of our 2011 accomplishments as
a nationally recognized nonprofit organization
helping single mothers and their children end the
cycle of poverty. And we’re already working hard
to accomplish even more in 2012.
In 2011, as we began expanding our service area and gained greater
prominence nationally, we were honored by an invitation to join Ascend,
an Aspen Institute program focused on family economic security. Ascend
is a hub for breakthrough ideas and proven strategies that move parents,
especially women, and their children beyond poverty toward educational
success and economic security. The program has three important goals:
1
2
CHANGE THE CONVERSATION around low-income families
ENGAGE ACROSS DIVERSE SECTORS to develop a network
of leaders and political will
3
CONVENE FORUMS AND CREATE PLATFORMS to elevate
effective two-generation policies and community solutions
Gloria Perez, our President and CEO, also received well-deserved
recognition when she was named an Ascend Fellow for 2012.

and into fulfilling, secure and lucrative jobs. As an Ascend Fellow,
Gloria Perez is poised to lead the next generation of innovators
toward solutions for parents and their children.”

Expanding Service, Leveraging Community
At Jeremiah Program, we strive to leverage the work of local
community organizations that can add value to our transformational
model. For example, we are working with the Guadalupe Neighborhood
Development Corporation in Austin to build a Jeremiah Program
campus community within a larger affordable housing development
it has planned.
We also have a recent partnership with City of Lakes Community
Land Trust and PRG, Inc., in Minneapolis, to develop workshops and a
certification program specifically designed to help prepare Jeremiah
Program graduates for the responsibilities of home ownership.
“Jeremiah Program’s comprehensive
model to end poverty for single
mothers and their children is bold
and will have a profound impact
on the families and those of us who
support them. Our foundation
admires the success enjoyed by so
many women and children, and we
are proud to step up and provide an
initial investment in Austin.”

Letters of Hope: On PARENTING
At Jeremiah Program, our goal
is to help the women we serve
become the best mothers they
can be, so that their children have
the opportunity to unleash their
full potential and live vibrant lives.
We do this by starting with high
expectations for the pursuit of
college and career while providing
safe, affordable housing, life
skills coaching, high-quality early
childhood education and a caring
Landon,
You are the biggest gift and joy in the world. You are so loved and so
treasured. I have learned parenting is not about being perfect. It is about
trying your best to be the best you can and raise the best child you can.
It is about instilling values and beliefs and morals. It’s teaching you to
accept and love yourself and others, and to stand up for what is right
even if it’s hard. You can do anything you put your mind to. Never let
anyone tell you differently. Say sorry when needed and smile when needed.
Never take things for granted and always help others.

Growing up for me without a mother and father, I did not want

Dear Kaidyn,
I just want you to know I love you to the moon and back, times 100! I didn’t
know it was possible to love someone as much as I love you. I want you to know
that whatever you set your mind to, you can do it. It’s 100% possible and I’m
behind you all the way. Nothing in this world would ever make me not love you ever.
I have beat all the teenage parent statistics and I have proven everyone

Letters of Hope: On Education
Dear Aden,
Since the day I found out I was pregnant with you I have
been taking steps to make a better life for both of us. I
went back to high school while I was carrying you in my
belly and your little kicks and movements were a reminder
every day of why I needed to succeed in school. I was on

My Dear Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me,
You will be three in a month and I keep thanking God for
blessing me with you. Currently, we live at Jeremiah Program’s
St. Paul campus. Jeremiah Program provides housing for
single moms who are in college. Anayah, I would like to say
that education is the key to success. We are blessed enough
to be around very strong, hard-working and independent
women at all times from the people who work here to each
and every mom. Anayah, remember this. People can strip you
down of everything, but one thing they can never take is your
education, which takes hard work. And education goes hand
in hand with taking you places; with that the sky is the limit.
I love you,

Jeremiah Program women receive

well as opportunities for interning
and job shadowing. As a result,
when they graduate from college
they have the skills, connections
and confidence to launch an
exciting new career.
Dear Gerald,
I would like to start of f by saying I love you very
much. I want to take this time to tell you how
important a career is. To me a career is very
important. It helps to define who you are. I hope you
choose wisely when you make that decision. But
it is also important to remember a career is not
permanent. You can do whatever you want to do.
Love,

My Dear Sweet Stella,
You come from a long line of hard working women. Your
family is from Russia. In the days that my mom and
grandma were working in Russia, women did not have
the same opportunities that men did. The jobs that were
available to women were limited. You have an advantage.
The world is different now. You can be anything that
you want to be. You can be the President of the United
States if you want. Hard work is in your blood. I know you
will be great at whatever it is that you put your mind to.
Just remember that hard work pays off. I now am a firm
believer in work now, play later. With a great career, you
can travel the world... with your mom, of course. I love you.

VOLUNTEERS INSPIRE HOPE
From the 90-year-old grandmother who rocks infants every Tuesday
morning to the corporate executive who teaches a weekly life skills
class to the 17-year-old who helps organize our library books, Jeremiah
Program attracts the best—and most loyal—volunteers. Here are just a
few examples:
Senior Corps Volunteers. Older adults have a lifetime of experience
to share and a genuine desire to make the world better. Take 83-yearold “Grandpa Bob” Jenkins, for instance. He spends four days a
week at Jeremiah Program, reading to and playing with toddlers and
preschoolers, helping them develop important skills and helping ensure
they feel loved.
Community Service Learning Project Volunteers. As part of
their schools’ community service learning project requirements,
students from Twin Cities high schools such as The Blake School,
Breck School and Cretin-Derham Hall volunteer to read and create
art with Jeremiah Program kids and make community bulletin boards
to showcase our successes.
Bullfrog Bash Volunteers. Thanks to the passion of hundreds of
volunteers and dozens of corporate sponsors, Jeremiah Program’s
Twin Cities fundraising gala attracts more than 600 guests annually
and has raised more than $3.8 million since 1999.
Life Skills Class Facilitators. Jeremiah Program mothers attend
weekly classes facilitated by volunteers who follow a professionally
developed curriculum focused on career development, economic
independence, physical and emotional health, healthy relationships,
and parenting and child development.
Boards of Trustees. In each city where we operate, we rely on the
wisdom of a local board composed of men and women who are
leaders at work and in their communities. They fulfill a variety of
important responsibilities, including overseeing our financial operations,
maintaining legal and ethical standards, providing strategic direction
and ensuring accountability to Jeremiah Program families, donors and
communities we serve.

Imagine encouraging a group of women
in their journey toward self-sufficiency.
That’s exactly what Tammy McIntyre,
the facilitator of Jeremiah Program’s

SUPPORT MAKES IT POSSIBLE
Corporate and Community Support
Jeremiah Program is blessed to have a wide variety of committed,
passionate corporate and community supporters. Their financial, in-kind,
volunteer and other contributions are vital to Jeremiah Program’s efforts
to end the cycle of poverty.
Some supporters are new, having only recently learned about our work.
Others, like Ecolab, have supported us since our inception.
“We’ve been a Jeremiah Program supporter since 1998,” says Ecolab
Foundation Vice President Kris Taylor. That’s the year the first 18 families
phased into residence in Minneapolis.
In 2004, Jeremiah Program announced it was expanding to Saint Paul.
“We were really excited about that,” explains Kris. “We’re a worldwide
company, but our headquarters is in downtown Saint Paul, and we knew
there was a strong need for Jeremiah Program in our community.”
More than a decade later, Ecolab remains a loyal supporter, contributing
both dollars and volunteers to Jeremiah Program.
“We love that Jeremiah Program has such strong expectations of the
women it accepts into the program,” says Kris. “Not only do they get
their college degrees, they receive additional education and training to
ensure they’re prepared for career-track employment. They also get safe,
affordable housing, as well as other support they need to be become
wonderful, self-sufficient moms.”
In addition to global, Fortune 500 companies such as Ecolab,
Jeremiah Program also receives the support of many local companies.
An example is Roers Development and Keller Williams Roers Realty in
Fargo, N.D. Owners Jim and Sandra Roers, both of whom have a long
history of leadership and advocacy in their community, donate office
and meeting space for Jeremiah Program staff and volunteers, and
host community events and Life Skills programming for participants.
In addition, Sandra serves as vice-chair of the Jeremiah Program
Fargo-Moorhead Community Board of Trustees. “We all need a
network of supporters in our lives who believe in us,” says Sandra.
“For single mothers who are determined to get ahead by earning a
college degree, Jeremiah Program provides that network of support,
a network they wouldn’t otherwise have.”

Our mission is to transform families from poverty to prosperity.
Jeremiah Program uses a proven, holistic approach that transforms families from poverty
to prosperity two generations at a time. Through safe and affordable housing, quality early
childhood education, life skills training and support for career-track education, Jeremiah
Program prepares determined single mothers to succeed in the workforce, readies their
children to succeed in school, and reduces generational dependence on public assistance.
Hope Is Inherited.
Join us in passing hope along by sharing this
annual report and by inviting others to visit
jeremiahprogram.org to learn more about
our groundbreaking two-generation approach
to ending poverty.
