Ambassador for the 2015 Canadian Tire National
Skating Championships in Kingston, Ontario. The

“We are delighted to have Paige act as our

Year of Sport. This is the most important
competition on Canadian skaters’ calendars as
they are all striving to represent Canada at the
international level. Having Paige join us to
represent the competing athletes allows the
skaters to stay focused on the ice,” said Dan
Thompson, CEO, Skate Canada. “Paige has
competed as this event nine times at the junior
and senior level and certainly knows what it
takes to compete at the national championships
and to make it onto the podium.”

“Kingston holds a special place in my heart, as
this is where I won my first grand prix medal at
the 2010 Skate Canada International. I am so
thrilled to be coming back to Kingston as the
Athlete Ambassador for the 2015 Canadian Tire
National Skating Championships and to share in
the remarkable memories that are sure to be
made,” said Lawrence. “I am honoured to
represent the amazing athletes who gather here
from across the country, as they compete to
achieve their individual goals, and I look forward
to cheering everyone on with all the enthusiasm
in my heart.”

Lawrence and her partner Rudi Swiegers are
four-time Canadian bronze medallists (2011,
2012, 2013, 2014). In 2010 they won their first
international medal, a bronze at Skate Canada
International in Kingston. That same season
they also won the bronze medal at the 2011 ISU
Four Continents Figure Skating Championships.
Lawrence and Swiegers qualified to compete for
Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in
Sochi and placed 14th. They then went on to
place 12th at the 2014 ISU World Figure Skating
Championships in Japan.
After finishing the 2013-2014 season Lawrence

Skate Canada Update
Skate Canada National and Sectional
Awards Program
Our organization is built on the dedication of its
member skaters, coaches, volunteers and
officials. Skate Canada and all Skate Canada
Sections are pleased to announce that online
nomination forms are available for all National
and Sectional awards. The awards program is
designed to celebrate and recognize this
dedication.
There are two separate sets of awards – those
that recognize activity at the National level and
those that celebrate the involvement of
members at the local and Sectional level.
This year we have made the nomination process
easier by making the online forms available to
anyone through the Skate Canada Info Centre.
You can find these directly by clicking on this
link: National and Sectional Awards. To make
the nomination forms easier to access, they
have also been posted to most Section web
sites! Here's a link to a list of all Section web
sites.
Skate Canada’s vision is to ‘inspire all Canadians
to embrace the joy of skating’. Help us celebrate
the efforts of those special members who
support the vision of Skate Canada by
nominating them for an award!

Process for Bring a Friend
and Family / Fun Skate
Days
As Skate Canada continues to
look for additional ways to
better serve the needs of its clubs and skating
schools, we are excited to introduce a NEW
process for Bring a Friend and Family/Fun Skate
days. Effective immediately, clubs and skating
schools are no longer required to inform Skate
Canada of the scheduled Bring a Friend and
Family/Fun Skate days in order to be covered
under the General Liability and the Accidental
January 2015
3
Death and Dismemberment insurance
policies. The only condition for coverage is that
clubs and skating schools MUST maintain a
detailed list of the following information:
1. Full name of family member and/or
friend attending
2. Contact information
3. Date of birth
4. Name and date of the event attended
Once this list has been compiled, the club or
skating school must keep this information on file
for one year. Skate Canada may request a copy
of the list at any time within the year.
Note that clubs and skating schools may offer
two Bring a Friend days and two Family Fun
Skates per membership year (September 1 –
August 31).
Should you require further information please
contact the Member Services department
at [email protected] or 1.888.747.2372
Check Club Mailboxes for Test Certificates
Please note that test certificates and awards of
merit have been printed and are currently being
mailed to our clubs. Remember to check your
mailboxes for these items in order to avoid
having them returned to Skate Canada as
unclaimed mail.

Club Online Program Registration Support
As previously communicated on July 16, 2014,
please note the following:
Skate Canada has begun undertaking a major
renovation of its technology infrastructure to
better serve its members. This will enable us to
offer a much larger amount of value to our
members as time progresses, but it does mean
that there will be some disruptions in service in
the short term. As we upgrade our main central
database we will need to begin shutting down
our current Online Program Registration (OPR)
tool. We will not be removing access to the tool
for our clubs which are currently using it and will
continue to keep it running for the winter
registration season. Note that support will be
discontinued prior to any registration seasons
that either start or are active in the next fiscal
year (commencing April 1, 2015). We will not be
promoting this tool to new clubs at this time.
While we will continue to support the current
OPR tool, as we are phasing out this particular
tool we will not be fixing any large bugs that
may be discovered during the remainder of the
year. Should any unresolvable issue be
discovered, we recommend that the affected
users register in person with their club. We will
still continue to troubleshoot technical issues
and login issues with the existing tool but do
wish to stress that as we begin decommissioning
this tool that we are providing it “As Is” in an
effort to help clubs directly interact with their
members. Please ensure we know who in your
club we should reach out to if we discover a
member has issues that require the actions of
the club itself to resolve (such as refunds, inperson registrations, or requests for
information). We hope to make this transition
as smooth as possible and look forward to being
able to provide new functionality to our clubs.
Any questions regarding use of the current OPR
tool should be directed to [email protected]
