DR. JOHN GUEST On Saturday, January 17, at the Comfort Inn at the RIDC Park on Rt. 28, Pittsburgh 15238, Dr. Guest will be the main speaker at our Prayer Breakfast for Life. NOTE: THIS IS A NEW LOCATION FOR OUR BREAKFAST. BE SURE TO CHECK THE RESERVATION FORM FOR DIRECTIONS FROM ALL AREAS. SEE PAGE 8 FOR FULL DETAILS. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF ABORTION February 18 – March 29, 2015. Join us and invite your family and friends. Invite your pastor. Our time of prayer in front our city’s largest abortion mill is a peaceful, prayerful and proven effective campaign that has saved lives, led to conversion of abortion workers and seen 59 facilities close. Join us for our KICK-OFF on Tuesday, February 17, at 7pm at First Presbyterian Church, 320 Sixth Avenue, downtown. See page 4 for details about the MARCH FOR LIFE – 2015 Mary Lou Gartner has been our March for Life coordinator in southwestern PA for more than 40 years. She coordinates the buses, schedules meetings with our members of Congress and stays in close contact with March for Life Headquarters so our pro-life family is the best-informed and best-equipped to fully participate in every aspect of the March. Thank you, Mary Lou! Vol. 43 No. 1 PP “PRIVILEGE” CHALLENGED IN COURT On December 3, five local pro-life citizens challenged the ordinance that prevents them from approaching the doors of Planned Parenthood on Liberty Ave., downtown. Elissa Graves, the attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom, told the judge that the buffer zone “bans more speech than is necessary.” Nikki Bruni stated that the yellow arc in front of PP stops her from having in-depth conversations with women about alternatives to abortion. Kimberly Evert of PP said she received complaints from patients who said they had been assaulted or harassed. U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon heard more than three hours of testimony. She gave both sides until December 19 to reach a compromise. If they can’t, the attorneys will have 30 days to file legal arguments before she rules. The Pittsburgh case follows a similar case in Boston in which the U.S. Supreme Court voted 9-0 to strike down a similar law in MA. In that case, the Court suggested, the burden that the law imposes on the plaintiffs in this case is significant: talking to someone on the sidewalk and handing her a pamphlet in the hope of convincing her not to have an abortion is exactly the kind of speech that the First Amendment protects. PRO-LIFE RETREAT IN FEBRUARY PCUC invites you to set aside the weekend of February 13-15 for a spiritual retreat at St. Emma Retreat House in Greensburg. Bill Cleary’s was a familiar face in many rescues. From his 68th year until he was 83 when he could have rested from his labors, he shouldered a new burden. Bill, Alice Jean Chester and Loretta Gilch frequently prayed at the doors of Planned Parenthood. (All are in photo.) Catherine Nedzesky died October 10. She was a familiar face at PCUC with the gang from St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin. For many years they came to stuff, seal and label the PCUC newsletter before Joan Derrick took it to the North Side Post office. Arleigh Eddy died on November 7 in Parker, PA. She was a strong and dedicated rescuer whose Faith shone in her love for God’s children and compassion for mothers, as well as the personnel at local abortion mills. We send our love and deepest sympathy to Mark and Linda Messineo Yurko. Their daughter, Nicole, age 29, died on November 15. Mark and Linda were part of the rescue movement. Their prayers and sacrifices led to the saving of precious lives. FANTASTIC ELECTION RESULTS This report is from Mary Lou Gartner, Secretary of LIFEPAC. We are disappointed that Governor Tom Corbett lost. He was pro-life and deserved to win. But otherwise we were very, very successful. All four of our pro-life Congressmen won and won big. Congrats to Mike Kelly, Bill Shuster, Keith Rothfus and Tim Murphy. The Pennsylvania Senate had two vacant seats and both were won by pro-lifers Pat Stefano, District 32 and Michelle Brooks, District 50. Randy Vulakovich did not have opposition and pro-life Camera Bartolotta upset Senator Tim Solobay. We have a stronger pro-life PA Senate as a result Congrats!! In the Pennsylvania State House all the pro-life listed incumbents won re-election. Pro-life Jason Ortitay upset pro-abort Jesse White in the 46th district. All four open seats in southwestern Pa were won by pro-lifers: Ted Nesbit, District 8; Parke Wentling, District 17; Ryan Warner, District 52 and Cris Dush in District 66. Congratulations and thanks to all the pro-life voters who made this election so successful. 2 42nd MARCH FOR LIFE Thursday, January 22, 2015 in Washington DC LIST OF BUS CAPTAINS AND DEPARTURES ALLEGHENY COUNTY Allison Park St Catherine Sean Norris 486-6001 Youth Rally VAN Aspinwall St Scholastica Mary C Scanlon 781-6550 Youth Rally BETHEL PARK St Thomas More Carolyn Martin 257-0780 (2) BRIDGEVILLE Holy Child Steve Rash 221-5213 BRIDGEVILLE Vineyard Church Tim Cameron 221-1881 CASTLE SHANNON St. Anne Kathy Raimondi 344-9690 FRANKLIN Park St John & Paul Donna Lopus 724-934-6446 (2) GIBSONIA St Richard Joanne Merhaut 724-443-6186 GLENSHAW St. Bonaventure Dave VanVickle 352-281-2420 GLENSHAW St Mary’s Carol Loiselle 724-443-7398 Youth Rally GREENTREE/MONROEVILLE AOH Pat Clark 761-3897 MONROEVILLE St Bernadette Sue Knechtel 370-0181 MT LEBANON St Bernard Phil Brown 343-0485 / 874-9955 Munhall, W.Oak, N.Versailles St.Therese Celeste Palcsey 672-6222 NATRONA HTS Harvest Baptist Pastor Steven Theil 724-295-0607 NORTH HILLS St Sebastian Dot Lydic 301-0420 NORTH HILLS St Teresa Dianne Machesney 366-7869 OAKLAND St Paul Cathedral PLEASANT HILLS St Elizabeth Pat Swauger 885-4429 PLEASANT HILLS St Elizabeth Mary Grassi 526-9332 Youth Rally ROBINSON/Imperial H Trinity/St Columbkille H Stamatakis 480-2908 SCOTT TWP Our Lady of Grace Jeff Snyder279-7070 SEWICKLEY St James John Bunce 741-1050 SEWICKLEY Christ Church at Grove Farm Mark Munson 527-4690 UPPER ST CLAIR St Louise DeMarillac Andy Lucas 914-0639 (2) VERONA St Joseph Joyce Doyle 795-5114 WEXFORD St. Alexis Claudia Berthold 724-799-5904 WEXFORD St. Alphonsus Mike Shipe 412-302-0603 WHITEHALL St Gabriel – Sue O’Keefe 881-2787 WILDWOOD Nat’l Com Human Life Brian Donnelly 724-444-8045 ARMSTRONG COUNTY KITTANNING Cottage Hill Church Matthew Clyde 724-859-8748 BEAVER COUNTY BEAVER SS Peter& Paul Josh Snatchko 724-775-4111 BEAVER Hope of the World Patty Hitchcock 724-987-4500 CHIPPEWA St. Monica Mary A Schweitzer 724-846-7540 BUTLER COUNTY BUTLER Butler Area Churches Ed Hoyt 724-283-9070 CABOT St. Joseph/St. Luke Amy Buchwald 724-353-9114 CRANBERRY TWP Sts Ferdinand/Kilian Bill Slusser 724-772-7962 GLADE MILLS Holy Sepulcher Gretchen Cararie 724-898-2529 HERMAN St. Mary John Hinterlang 724-352-9384 MERIDIAN St Fidelis Ray Ferguson 724-282-4298 Youth Rally ZELIENOPLE St Gregory John Healy 724-544-4118 FAYETTE COUNTY INDIANA COUNTY CLYMER Resurrection Rev Tim Kruthaupt 724-254-3041 VAN INDIANA Indiana & Strongstown Ray Yarnell 724-840-8660 LAWRENCE COUNTY NEW CASTLE PCUC Chapter Diane Marcella 724- 658-8662 New CASTLE St Camillus K Tylinski724-652-9471 Youth Rally VAN MERCER COUNTY GREENVILLE St Michael Lora Shrouck 724-588-9800 GROVE CITY Beloved Disciple Mark Jaskowak 724-992-3087 WASHINGTON COUNTY Canonsburg/Bentl St Patrick Nicole Guyton 412-874-5385 Youth Rally McMURRAY St Benedict Vic Vandewater 724-941-9749 McMURRAY Bible Chapel Lori Szala 537-5706 (2-3) MEADOWLANDS Miraculous Medal Janice Chehovin 724-344-1736 WASHINGTON IC R Mancini 724-222-0174 Overnight Youth Rally WESTMORELAND COUNTY Avonmore /Delmont Sts Ambrose/ John Anna M Stackowitz 289-2520 EXPORTCornerstone Ministrie Amy Nyiri 724-733-0070x216 (4) Greensburg/Jeannette.SPaul/Ascention P Whalen 724-836-3096 (2) GREENSBURG Diocese Chris Smith 724-837-0901 Youth Rally LATROBE Holy Family Shari Lewis 724-537-4456 MURRYSVILLE Mother of Sorrows Joanne 724-733-8870 (2) New Kensington/Somerset St Mary G Pecoraro724-335-8212/337-1030 NORTH HUNTINGDON St. Agnes Charles Cleaveland 724-863-1151 COLLEGES and SCHOOLS BEAVER Christian School Beaver Co Robert Rostoni 724-843-3002 BETHEL PARK Hillcrest Christian Alan Ciechanowski 854-4040 CONNELLSVILLE Geibel Catholic Scott Procko 724-628-5600 CORAOPOLIS Our Lady Sacred Heart Monty Montgomery 264-5140 CRAFTON Bishop Canevin Sean Fox 922-7400 GREENSBURG Catholic John McFarland 724-834-0310 Youth Rally LATROBE St Vincen College T Robbins717-903-2869 Youth Rally (3) LATROBE SVincent Seminary Brother Mathew Lambert 724-532-6653 NORTH HILLS VincentioAcademy JApple 724-822-5431 Youth Rally OAKLAND Oakland Catholic Amy Farrell 682-6633 SOUTH HILLS Seton-LaSalle Brian Klisavage 561-3583x213 (3) WILDWOOD Acquinas Academy Leslie Mitros 724-444-0722 (2) AREAS OTHER THAN SOUTH WEST PA ALTOONA Pat and Tom Forr 814-946-0681 CAMBRIA-SOMERSET COUNTIES Pat Mulcahy 814-269-1470 HARRISBURG Alice Ballent 717-541-0034 WEST VIRGINIA Mary Ann Buchanan 304-216-6573 CHAMPION/Donegal Fam. & C.Ctr Merl Skinner 724-455-2122 x340 Youth Buses –are leaving to be in DC for the Youth Rally and Mass at Verizon Center or Armory or at the Life is Very Good Rally in Fairfax, Virginia prior to March. We now believe the procedure used on Mr. Fidyka “is the breakthrough which will result in historic change in the currently hopeless outlook for people disabled by spinal cord injury.” Call PCUC for sources. Sooner or later, the historic breakthroughs in ADULT stem cell surgery will force the quacks who use our tax money to look for cures with embryonic stem cells to admit they have failed. TERRIFYING NEWS? In July NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) sent out an email saying it would be “terrifying” if pro-life forces took control of the Senate in November. NARAL lamented that Sen. Mitch McConnell specifically promised to push legislation to ban abortion after 20 weeks…” What Sen. McConnell spoke about is the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, the law that would protect unborn babies from the excruciating pain of an abortion done after the baby is developed enough to feel pain. Funny, the NARAL email didn’t mention pain. Source: NRLC memo: 7-28-14 If you wanted to write a letter to a public official, do you have the name address and phone number of your state representative, your state senator, your Representatives in Congress (2 Senators) and the President? MARCH FOR LIFE 2015 The March for Life is a peaceful demonstration to share the truth about the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand. It continues annually as a testament to pro-lifers’ perseverance and strong dedication to the cause of Life. “Every Life is a Gift” is the theme for the March for Life on Thursday, January 22, 2015. It draws attention to the preborn populations that are at the greatest risk for abortion: those who receive a prenatal disability diagnosis. Events begin with a rally on the National Mall at noon. Then we march to the US Supreme Court to hear testimony from women who regret their abortion. Meetings are scheduled with our elected officials to present petitions and requests for an end to this tragedy. In Pittsburgh our Prayer Breakfast for Life is at 10 am on Saturday, January 17, at the Comfort Inn in RIDC Park (new location). See p. 8 for reservation form. Our program includes a complete breakfast, prayer, song and a homily by Rev. Dr. John Guest. On Saturday, January 17, at 6 pm, Beaver PHL will have their Annual Respect Life Memorial Service at the Gazebo in the Park. Program includes prayer, songs, reading of a proclamation, lighting luminaries and a candlelight procession to a local church with speakers, refreshments and pro-life displays. Info at 724-7283235. Lawrence County PCUC will hold their “Light a Candle for Life” Prayer Vigil on Wednesday January 21, at 6:30 pm at Kennedy Square. They will light luminaries followed by a Prayer Service at a local church. Info at 724-658-8662. In Washington, DC, there will be many activities associated with this March for Life. The Renaissance Hotel at 999 Ninth Street NW is the new HQ where there are displays and the Rose Dinner. More info at www.marchforlife.org. The Archdiocese of Washington sponsors a Mass at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday evening and on the morning of the March. Many SW PA groups will have services at the many chapels at the Shrine. Youth Rallies start at 7:30 am on Thursday at the Verizon Center and the Armory. This year another rally has been added in Fairfax, VA. After the March, we will “march for life” in our home communities. Each person can make a difference and there are many ways to be involved: *Support and participate in 40 Days for Life “I DIDN’T KNOW THAT” “Why Didn’t Somebody Tell Me the Truth?” is an anthropological, biological explanation of a woman’s body and the effect of her cycle on her behavior. It’s an eye-opening flyer that every female and male should read and understand. Call the office for your copy. * Support local Pregnancy Support Centers * Pray *Train as a Sidewalk Counselor * Start a pro-life group at your church or school * Support pro-life public officials and candidates 4 GARDASIL - NOT WHAT YOU THINK Menopause…at 16. You read that right. Maddie and Olivia Meylor will never be able to have their own children. Both went into “premature ovarian failure”—a condition that causes the ovaries to stop producing eggs. The reason? Each girl received three Gardasil shots. Gardasil is sold by Merck. It is touted as a vaccine that will prevent a certain type of cancer, but some side effects of the vaccine are dangerous, even deadly. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defends Merck, saying they “found no reason to be concerned” about premature ovarian failure, and they will monitor the condition. We suggest you go to your favorite search engine. The list of articles relating the dangers and problems with Gardasil will knock your socks off. ABORTION RAISES CANCER RISK BY 626% A study by doctors based at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences shows that women who get an induced abortion are 626% more likely to have breast cancer compared to women who carry their pregnancy to term and have the baby. Also, women who have had more abortions are more likely to have cancer. Their report, published in the INDIAN JOURNAL OF CANCER confirms that an abortion weakens the breast’s muscle tissue in a way that makes it more susceptible to cancer. Source: LifeNews from New Delhi, India NAME CHANGE Tri-City Life Center recently changed their name to TryLife Center, but the life-affirming programs of this agency in Lower Burrell are as strong as ever. Need help? Go to [email protected]. CLOSED DOORS SAVE LIVES The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rules that TX strong prolife laws can be enforced, and within days, 14 of the state’s 23 abortion mills are closed. The law says abortion facilities must meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. In Pittsburgh five of seven abortion mills closed at passage of a similar law. PLEASE HEED OUR MESSAGE Bob Newman is one of the faithful men and women who are on the sidewalk near the doors of Planned Parenthood at 7 a.m. on Tues., Fri. and Saturday, the days when abortions are on the schedule at 933 Liberty Avenue. Nobody pays them to stand there. They watch and pray in every kind of weather. Most passers-by act as though they are invisible. Once in a while they hear a “God bless you.” Some comments are downright nasty. Our friends won’t go away, no matter what message they hear. If you would like be a “watchman for life,” call Bob (412835-8127). He’d like to meet you COMPASSION & CHOICES = COERCION “It can’t happen here,” has become the mantra of many who do not want to deal with impending tragedy. Sen. Daylin Leach (SB1032) and Rep. Mark Rozzi (HB 2548) introduced their “assisted suicide” bills. Leadership in both houses of the PA General Assembly says the bills will “go nowhere.” So then we can ignore them? No way! Look at other states where the citizenry thought “It can’t happen here.” In CA, CO, CT, MD, MA, NJ, MT, OR, NM and VT, C&C (Compassion & Choices) is busy promoting right to die bills, and they won’t give up on PA. Let your state senator and state rep know that assisted suicide must NEVER be legal in PA. Call the office if you need a name or number. 5 JEAN ROGAN HONORED Jean with her husband and friends and colleagues in 2012. In November the New Castle Chapter of PCUC honored the lady who founded the chapter 40 years ago. Jean Rogan took the pro-life principles of PCUC and the March for Life to Lawrence County. There, a faithful, determined and savvy group of men and women labored to teach, promote and help people discover the beauty of innocent human life. Each year the New Castle Chapter joins the Knights of Columbus for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser. In 2013 they invited clergy from all over the county for a luncheon with Dr. Alveda King, niece of the Dr. Martin Luther King. In 2014 their guest speakers were leaders from the PA Pro-life Federation in Harrisburg. Our pro-life family is pleased to have this valiant pioneer as our leader. Jean, you are a blessing to all. KENYA’S BISHOPS FIND BIG LIE Kenya’s Catholic bishops are charging two United Nations organizations with sterilizing millions of girls and women under cover of an anti-tetanus inoculation program sponsored by the Kenyan government. According to a statement released Tuesday by the Kenyan Catholic Doctors Association, the organization has found an antigen that causes miscarriages in a vaccine being administered to 2.3 million girls and women by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. Priests throughout Kenya are advising their congregations to refuse the vaccine. “We sent six samples from around Kenya to labs in South Africa. They tested positive for the HCG anti-gen,” Dr. Muhame Ngare of the Mercy Medical Centre in Nairobi told LifeSiteNews. “They were all laced with HCG. Source LifeSiteNews. Call PCUC for article. CHLOE’S LAW = ACT 130 OF 2014 In July Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law the Down Syndrome Prenatal & Postnatal Education Act or “Chloe’s Law.” Sen. Randy Vulakovich and Rep. Jim Marshall of Beaver introduced the bill in the PA Senate and House. Under the Act, the Department of Health will make available up-to-date, evidencebased information about Down syndrome that has been reviewed by medical experts and national Down syndrome organizations. The information will include physical, developmental, educational and psychological outcomes; life expectancy’ clinical course; intellectual and functional development and treatment options. It will also include contact information for First Call programs, support services, hotlines specific to Down syndrome, relevant resource centers, clearinghouses and national and local Down syndrome organizations. Jason was the producer of BELLA. Jason has first-hand experience regarding the effect abortion has on a man. His most recent movie is CRESCENDO, the story about how he became pro-life. His message enlightens and changes hearts. GRUBER’S ARROGANCE UNMASKED “Jonathan Gruber is no runof-the-mill advocate of women’s rights; no,” said Austin Ruse, international pro-life advocate. “He’s on record repeatedly making the case from social science that abortion is a ‘social good’ because it reduces the number of ‘marginal children,’ by which he means the urban poor—those he says can be counted on to commit crimes if they were ever born. “Gruber co-authored a paper during the Clinton years which argued that legal abortion saved the U.S. taxpayer upwards of $14 billion in welfare benefits and that it also lowered crime,” said Ruse. THINKING AHEAD TO SPRING, TRA-LA If you start your spring clean-up right after January 1, don’t forget we will be asking for donations for our annual rummage sale in the spring. One man’s junk is another’s treasure. PRO-LIFE 18-YR-OLD WINS IN WV “I believe that life begins at conception, so I consider abortion the act of taking human life,” she states. “We should not spend our tax dollars to fund such procedures. I’ve been blessed with life and I believe every child should have that same opportunity.” Saira Blair is an 18-year-old freshman at WVU. She is America’s youngest elected lawmaker as a delegate to the WV House. She got 63% of the vote. “AMERICAN WAR CASUALTIES” REVISED Almost since PCUC was founded (as WCUC) we’ve distributed tens of thousands of yellow cards with tiny crosses. Each cross represents 50,000 casualties from every war in which America has fought from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam. Now we have been blessed by the skill and attention to detail of John Lewandowski. (here with his mom). John updated the statistics on abortion and changed the crosses to hearts. We can only imagine the loss of the love and human potential of the 50,000 babies each heart represents. Call the office (412-531-9272) to order a quantity for your respect life group or pamphlet rack at church. PLANET FITNESS IN FL BANS SHIRT As he had often done in the past, Mike Amoroso wore his “Abortion Kills a Person” T-shirt to Planet Fitness. This time, he was told to leave. The next day he showed up with “PRAY TO END ABORTION” on a bright gold shirt. He was booted again. The mission statement, binding on all PF franchises says, “We at Planet Fitness are here to provide a unique environment in which anyone— and we mean anyone—can be comfortable. As we evolve and educate ourselves, we will seek to perfect this safe, energetic environment, where everyone feels accepted and respected.” But not Mike! He was censored by a PF employee. Too bad.
