No matter how much or how little we have individually, each one of us is called to personally reach out and serve our brothers and sisters in need. There is always someone near us who is in need, materially, emotionally, spiritually. The greatest gift we can give to them is our friendship, our concern, our tenderness, our love for Jesus. To receive Jesus is to have everything; to give him is to give the greatest gift of all. But to all of you, especially those who can do more and give more, I ask: Please, do more! Please, give more! When you give of your time, your talents and your resources to the many people who struggle and who live on the margins, you make a difference. It is a difference that is so desperately needed, and one for which you will be richly rewarded by the Lord. For, as he has said: “you will have treasure in heaven.” WE ARE A TITHING PARISH GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING A WEEK AGO $ 3,198.50 CHILDREN $ 12.10 A YEAR AGO $ 3,236.00 CHILDREN $ 13.65 “The true purpose of tithing is to secure not the tithe, but the tither; not the gift, but the giver; not your money, but you...for God. MALASSADAS SUNDAY Today, after all Morning Masses, you can buy, in the Sacred Heart Church Hall, the best malassadas in East Providence. We thank the good ladies who provide such delicacies. Dear Padre Many of these “churches” and their “priests” look legitimate. From the Pastor’s Desk Some even use the name “Catholic” and many of their clergy have advanced degrees from Catholic colleges and universities. TO: Pastors and Parishioners of the Diocese of Providence However, we should be especially wary of any church that promotes itself: FROM: Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, D.D. DATE: January 9, 2015 RE: Clarification The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence occasionally circulates an advisory regarding some local “churches” that appear to be Roman Catholic but are not, thus causing considerable confusion for our parish priests and their parishioners. Once again, at the recent request of several pastors, we issue this additional clarification regarding specifically: “AMERICAN OLD CATHOLIC CHURCH” (134 Park Avenue, Cranston) “ST. THERESE OLD CATHOLIC CHURCH” (1500 Main Street, West Warwick) “CHURCH OF THE HOLY PARACLETE” (155 Douglas Avenue, Providence) “ST. PATRICK CHURCH” (2068 Cranston Street, Cranston) These churches are outside of the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church, and therefore NONE is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Bishops and with Pope Francis. They are NOT part of the Diocese of Providence and NOT affiliated to it. Except for the Sacrament of Baptism, any sacrament received in these “churches” is INVALID. Weddings, involving at least one Catholic spouse, that are celebrated in these false Catholic “churches” are also invalid, and would require a validation in the Roman Catholic Church. 1) Using slogans such as “different kind of Catholic” or “outside the Roman Catholic Church”; 2) With insignia or wording in advertisements that support the “LGBT community”. Many Catholics, who are engaged to marry, are approaching these local “churches” because they promise a quicker and lesscumbersome marriage preparation process. Unfortunately, the couples only realize later that the Roman Catholic Church does not recognize these marriages as valid. If there is any doubt regarding the status of a “church” or individual “priest”, a Letter of Good Standing should be requested from the “priest”. A Letter of Good Standing is a standard letter, and bears the signature of the priest’s bishop or religious superior. It should also be recently-dated and bear the raised seal of the priest’s diocese or religious order. Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, D.D. Bishop of Providence, RI “Let your heart be a temple where the praise of God resounds forever. Love God with a pure intention day and night and pray that the reign of God may expand over all the earth.” Saint Louis Guanella A GRAIN OF WISDOM When I was at the end of my rope, God was holding the other end. Baptism of BRYNN EVELYN ATKINSON Name the Capital A blonde was complaining to her friend about constantly being called a dumb blonde. Her friend tells her "go do something to prove them wrong! Why don't you learn all the state capitals or something?" The blonde thinks this is a great idea, and locks herself up for two weeks studying. The next party she goes to, some guy is making dumb blonde comments to her. She gets all indignant and claims, "I'm NOT a dumb blonde. In fact, I can name ALL the state capitals!" The guy doesn't believe her, so she dares him to test her. He says "Okay, what's the Capital of Montana?" The blonde tosses her hair in triumph and says, "That's easy! It's M!"
