I don’t know about you but for me 2014 flew by. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older or by some strange phenomenon, time has actually sped up and the days and weeks are getting shorter! It seemed like we jumped from June to December! There are still many great things happening here in our beautiful hometown of Mililani. Our coffee shop has been open for a couple of months and the feedback from residents and Rec 7 regulars have been overwhelmingly positive. The pavilions at Rec 7 are set to open soon, watch for the announcement for the grand opening. It’s funny how well that project worked out. It was our initial vision to build one large pavilion but we later found out that we needed to add a substantial number of parking spots in order to do that. So we moved to 5 smaller pavilions and now that I see them built, they are a much better choice and I feel that they will serve more people, better. They look like they have always been there. Do you make any New Year resolutions? I do not. Of course there are always things I want to do better or more often. I can’t remember the last time I picked up my tennis racquet and hit the courts. I’d like to finally join a MTA Business Offices ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE 95-303 Kaloapau Street, Mililani, HI 96789 Tel: 808-623-7300 / Fax: 808-623-3474 Open Weekdays 8:00am-4:30pm Closed Weekends and Holidays REC CENTER 3 BUSINESS OFFICE 95-281 Kaloapau Street, Mililani Town Tel: 808-440-2603 Monday-Saturday 8:00am to 8:30pm Sunday 9:00am to 8:30pm REC CENTER 7 BUSINESS OFFICE 95-1333 Lehiwa Drive, Mililani Mauka Tel: 808-440-2608 Weekdays 8:00am to 8:30pm Saturdays 8:00am to 7:45pm Sundays 8:00am to 5:45pm After-Hours MTA Emergency Tel: 808-440-2603 gym; I’ve been talking about this for a year now. But what is it that I really want from 2015? When I started thinking about this, one word kept coming up; Ability. I need the ability to listen better. I need the ability to be a better person (father, husband, boss, association president, etc). I need the ability to stay focused on the task at hand. I need the ability to stay calm in traffic and other stressful situations. I need the ability to make more of my jump shots and play better defense. The list goes on and on. The word just fit. So instead of making a New Year’s resolution about losing weight, making more money, or learning a new skill, maybe we can make our goal more attainable by focusing on our ability to get there. I wish you and your family much happiness, good health and success in the New Year. I wish you the chance to participate in all that our great community of Mililani has to offer. And most of all, I wish you the ability to make “it” happen in 2015! U.S. Army Realignment Proposal As part of its 2020 force structure realignment, the U.S. Army is considering a proposal that would eliminate 16,606 soldiers from Schofield Barracks and 3,786 from Ft. Shafter. Added to that is approximately 30,000 civilians lost, making the total reduction over 50,000, or 5% of Honolulu’s population. The economic impact is estimated to be 20,000 jobs lost and $1.35 Billion lost from our economy, including $9.2 Million in general excise taxes lost. The Army estimates a 38% decline in the populations of Waialua, Wahiawa, Schofield, Mililani, and Kunia. wants to inform everyone of the areas that are being inspected each month. The areas highlighted on this map are the areas scheduled for routine Covenant inspections this month. We hope to reduce the amount of violation letters we have to send out by giving you advanced notice of where we will be. We are not trying to do our inspections in secret. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Our Covenants Specialists are very friendly and very willing to talk to you. Mililani News January 2015 • 9 Covenants & Design New Contest Yard of the Quarter The Mililani Town Association is please to announce a new Yard of the Quarter Contest, where your front yard could win you $400 cash or cash equivalent! Our first quarter is sponsored by Help-U-Sell® Realty Pro in Mililani. In an effort to recognize homeowners who keep their yards looking beautiful, which enhances their neighborhood, our Covenants Specialists will be nominating front yards that catch their eye. There will be six yards nominated each quarter, and they will be pictured in the MTA newsletter. The schedule is as follows: January – nominees pictured March – winner pictured July – nominees pictured September – winner pictured April – nominees pictured June – winner pictured Picture 3:1Q/2015 October – nominees pictured December – winner pictured There is no limit to the number of times a yard can be nominated, but a yard can only win once per year. To be eligible to be nominated, the property must be owner occupied and in good standing with the Association. In addition, the owner must agree to have a picture of their yard shown in the MTA newsletter and on the MTA web site. The winner will be published in a picture with the Sponsor and nominating Covenant Specialist. Good luck to all the first nominees, and thank you for helping to keep Mililani beautiful! Approval code: 8126542476IW Mililani News January 2015 • 11 Safety in the Community New Year’s Resolution Tips As we make our resolutions for the New Year, one of the top goals that people have is to live healthier and exercise more. Unfortunately, those who do not approach their goals with a proper plan may be setting themselves up for injury, not exactly the result that you want when implementing what is hopefully a lifelong lifestyle change. One of the critical aspects of starting an exercise and fitness program is to make sure that the path you take leads to a lifestyle that enhances your well-being, not one that creates further problems down the road. Here are some tips to consider that may help lessen the chance for injury and increase the chance of longterm success. START SLOWLY: Do not try to relive your “glory days” and think that you can run a 6-minute mile or bench press 250 pounds just because you were able to do that in college 20 years ago. Start slowly and develop a steady pace that will help you to regain your proper form and build endurance. You can increase your intensity as you gain more strength and stamina. SET REALISTIC GOALS: 12 • www.mililanitown.org Sad to say, but it is unlikely that you will drop 10% of your body weight in the next 30 days. The best way to make changes is to lose weight slowly and consistently, through a combination of changes in your diet and exercise program. According to the Mayo Clinic, targeting a weight-loss goal of 1-2 pounds a week means that you must burn 500-1000 more calories than you consume each day (1 pound = 3500 calories). Considering that swimming laps at a moderate pace for 10 minutes or running a Safety in the Community 10-minute mile burns about 100 calories, it is easy to see why it is often difficult to lose weight through diet or exercise alone. WARM UP & COOL DOWN: Make sure to get the blood flowing to your muscles and start to gradually increase your body temperature by doing some low level aerobic activity and then stretching before beginning your higher intensity workout. Cooling down by decreasing your intensity and stretching after your workout is just as important to help minimize muscle stiffness or soreness. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE: Drink before, during and after your workout. It is important to replace the fluids that your body loses during exercise and to remember that your body continues to lose fluids for some time after you stop exercising. Staying properly hydrated helps to minimize the potential of heat related stress that could include headaches, dizziness and/or muscle cramps. T h e re a re so m a ny rea so n s to ch o ose T h e Pl a z a a t M i l i l a n i GET THE PROPER GEAR: Make sure that you buy the proper equipment for the exercise program that you plan to start. There are a variety of athletic shoe types that are designed specifically for your particular activity, whether it be running or weight training, basketball or tennis, hiking or walking. Additional equipment may include other protective gear or clothing, consult with a trainer or fitness expert for equipment recommendations. GOOD LUCK in meeting your goals in the New Year, and remember, it will take several weeks for this change in lifestyle to become a habit. Therefore, be sure to keep at it and don’t let minor setbacks discourage your long-term goals of living a healthier lifestyle. You’ll feel better this time next year and you’ll be ready to set new goals!
