PROGRAM [WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS LEARN?]
AT YAŞAR UNIVERSITY
THE SECOND SEMESTER IN BASIC DESIGN STUDIO IS
BASED ON FOUR MAIN PILLARS: COMPOSITION, STRUCTURE, MATERIAL AND
FORM. WE BELIEVE THAT THESE ARE THE MAIN PILLARS OF DESIGN KNOWLEDGE
THAT STUDENTS NEED TO RECALL AND MOBILIZE IN THEIR SECOND YEAR.
ALTHOUGH DIVIDED INTO SEPARATE EXERCISES THE SEMESTER’S PLAN IS
HOLISTIC; EACH EXERCISE AIMS TO PROVIDE A BASIS FOR THE NEXT TASK. IN THE
FINAL EXERCISE (WHERE FORM IS EXPLORED) STUDENTS ARE INTRODUCED “RULE
BASED DESIGN” (IN THE FORM OF “ANALOGUE COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN”).
*“RELIEF”
“MATERIAL BEHAVIOR” ARE VARIATIONS OF THE EXERCISES
DEVELOPED AT IEU IN FALL/SPRING 2012/13 FOR FFD102 BASIC DESIGN II.

ARCH120_1: ABSTRACTION/COMPOSITION/RELIEF:
IN
THIS EXERCISE STUDENTS EXPLORE ORGANIZATIONAL
PRINCIPLES OF A PHOTOGRAPH THEY TAKE. THEY ARE ASKED
TO IDENTIFY THE ELEMENTS OF THE COMPOSITION AND
ASSIGN “DEPTH” TO DIFFERENT AREAS. THE NEXT STEP IS TO
REPRODUCE THEIR DRAWINGS BASED ON THE ORIGINAL
PHOTOGRAPH TWO MORE TIMES AND MAKE A NEW
COMPOSITION. THE FINAL STEP IS TO USE THEIR STUDY OF
“DEPTH” TO DESIGN A RELIEF AND ANALYZE TEXTURE. THE
END PRODUCT IS A “PAVEMENT” COMPOSED OF INDIVIDUAL
RELIEFS. FOLLOWING THE ORDERING PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
(RHYTHM, BALANCE, HIERARCHY, CONTRAST, ETC.) THE
PAVEMENT MUST SHOW BOTH UNITY AND VARIETY, CREATING
A CONTINUOUS SURFACE.

ARCH120_2: STRUCTURE: TENSION/COMPRESSION:
IN
THIS EXERCISE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT STRUCTURAL
FORCES. THE AIM IS TO EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
PHYSICAL AND VISUAL BALANCE. BY WORKING WITH WOODEN
STICKS, THUMBTACKS AND WOOL STRINGS, THEY ARE ASKED TO
BUILD A SELF-STANDING TENSEGRITY MODULE. THE FIRST TASK
IS TO APPLY WEAVING, PATCHING AND INTERLOCKING
TECHNIQUES TO PARTIALLY COVER THIS UNIT. THE SECOND STEP
IS TO INTRODUCE ADDITIONAL LINEAR ELEMENTS THAT WORK IN
COMPRESSION. THE FINAL STEP IS TO PRODUCE MORE
TENSEGRITY UNITS AND MAKE A COMPOSITION WITHIN A
40X40X40 CM CUBIC FRAME. THE UNITS ARE EXPECTED TO
CREATE CONTINUOUS SURFACES AND THE COMPOSITION
SHOULD BE BOTH VISUALLY AND STRUCTURALLY BALANCED.

ARCH120_3 MATERIAL BEHAVIOR: METAL
IN
THIS EXERCISE STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO DESIGN A SELFSTANDING UNIT IN [1/1] SCALE BY USING METAL MATERIALS.
THE SELF-STANDING UNIT WILL FUNCTION AS A LIGHTING
DEVICE. THE USE OF ADHESIVE MATERIALS IS NOT ALLOWED;
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP CONNECTION DETAILS.
THE AIMS OF THE EXERCISE ARE TWOFOLD: THE FIRST IS TO
LEARN ABOUT THE MATERIAL BEHAVIOR. STUDENTS NEED TO
MOBILIZE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF STRUCTURAL FORCES TO
SUCCESSFULLY WORK WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATERIALS
WHICH WOULD OPERATE EITHER IN COMPRESSION OR
TENSION. THE SECOND IS TO INTRODUCE “FUNCTION” AS A
DESIGN PARAMETER: CREATING MULTIPLE LAYERS WITH
DIFFERENT SURFACE QUALITIES TO CONTROL LIGHT.

ARCH120_4 : WORKSHOPS’ WEEK
IN
THE WORKSHOP’S WEEK STUDENTS ARE INTRODUCED TO
VARIOUS OTHER MEDIUMS, DISCIPLINES AND FIELDS OF
INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF ARCHITECTURE BUT RELATED TO BASIC
DESIGN. THE TITLES AND ORGANIZERS OF THIS SEMESTER’S
WORKSHOPS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
“CUT-OUT ANIMATION”: CHRISTOPHER FERRARIS
“TEXTURE VENTURE”: EMRE YILDIZ
“WEAWING THE EXPERIENCE”: FIRAT NEZIROĞLU
“DISMANTLING AND RECREATING”: HAKAN ERTEP
“ART IN SPACE”: SARA BERTI
“HEAD ARCHITECT”: ZEYNEP ORAL, ZEYNEP AKÇAY
ARCH120 FINAL EXERCISE: FORM/RULE BASED DESIGN:
IN THIS EXERCISE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT “PROGRAM” AND
“SITE” IN ADDITION TO FUNCTION. THE INITIAL STEP OF THE
FINAL EXERCISE IS A WARM UP ASSIGNMENT WHERE “RULE
BASED DESIGN” ARE INTRODUCED. USING FOUR RAIL CURVES,
STUDENTS MORPH ONE GEOMETRIC SHAPE TO THE OTHER BY
PASSING THROUGH AN INTERMEDIARY SHAPE: THE END
PRODUCT IS A “HYBRID OBJECT.” THE FINAL EXERCISE HAS THE
FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION: IN 2100 AT A REMOTE PLACE IN A
PLANET XYZ, THREE GEOMETRIC FORMS (A CIRCULAR PRISM, A
RECTANGULAR PRISM AND A TRAPEZOIDAL PRISM) FELL ONTO
THE PROJECT SITE. THE FIRST GOAL OF THIS EXERCISE IS TO LINK
THESE FORMS TO OBTAIN A HYBRID OBJECT. THE NEXT GOAL IS
TO DECOMPOSE THE HYBRID OBJECT AND RECOMPOSE IT
TO DESIGN A MONUMENT TO NATURE.
ARCH120 FINAL EXERCISE: FORM/RULE BASED DESIGN:
HOW STUDENTS RESPOND TO THE IDEA OF NATURE (I.E., TO
ENHANCE IT, TRANSFORM IT, GROW IT, PROTECT IT, INHABIT IT,
EVADE IT) PROVIDES THE PROGRAM FOR THIS PROJECT. THE
“MONUMENT” THAT STUDENTS WILL DESIGN WILL BE SEEN
THROUGH AND/OR WALKED THROUGH. THE SIZE OF THE FINAL
PRODUCT MAY VARY FROM URBAN FURNITURE TO A LARGE
STRUCTURE OR SERIES OF SMALLER SPACES. BUT IT HAS TO BE
LOCATED AT THIS SITE. FINALLY, THE “MONUMENT” SHOULD BE
BASED ON AN EXPERIENCE OF MOVEMENT TOWARD CERTAIN
DIRECTIONS, PROVIDE VARIOUS VIEWPOINTS, AND EVOKE
DIFFERENT EMOTIONS ABOUT NATURE. STUDENTS ARE NOT
BOUND WITH THE TYPICAL UNDERSTANDING OF NATURE ON
EARTH; THEY CAN COME UP WITH ALTERNATIVE VISIONS.
