"The Prayer of Faith"
( A testimony by Elder C.D. Shafer, M.D.)
"I have found the position of many Primitive Baptist's strangely dichotomous (divided)
regarding prayer and healing. While we pray for healing, when the patient is healed, the doctor
gets the credit. If we pray "too faithfully" then we have become presumptuous.
As one that witnesses healing everyday, and prays for such several times/day, I have some
personal observations.
Most people (Christians) don't pray before going to the doctor, and they don't pray for their
doctor. One person even told me, "If I thought prayer would fix it, I sure would have stayed
home!" Even those who pray fervently, look for excuses to give modern medicine the credit: "Well,
I guess that antibiotic finally kicked in. And, I have to admit, the doctors certainly foster this
attitude.
My own attitude toward prayer for healing was at one time not much different. I then
became convicted that God's healing without me, would always be superior to God's healing with
me. At some point in time, I had to admit that my attitude had been, "I know that God can heal,
BUT, He usually doesn't." Since changing my attitude about prayer, seeking God's glory instead
of my own, and seeking my patient's good rather than mine, I have seen incredible things
happen.
An example:
A year ago, a woman in labor suddenly had loss of her baby's heart beat. An emergency csxn was done, and the obstetrician handed me a "dead" baby: no heart beat, no motion, no
reflexes… nothing. We began efforts to resuscitate the baby, and we typically will push this
situation 20 minutes during a code. We actually worked on this child about 25 minutes, without
the faintest response OF ANY KIND. The nurse supervisor finally asked if it was time to "call the
code" (i.e., stop the efforts), and I said, "No, it is time to pray." Everyone stopped. I prayed. The
baby gasped! We returned to work, got the baby to an ICU and continued to pray.
I saw that child last week for an earache. She is a year old, healthy and has absolutely
NO sign of brain damage, cerebral palsy, seizures, heart problems, delay, etc. She is an absolute
miracle. But, the doctor and nurses had to first confess that they could do nothing. Sixteen
people in that room saw that miracle. The doctors in Fort Worth thought that they had received a
wrong report, and several of them called back to double check the story: "You mean, no sign of
life for 45 minutes, 25 minutes of that outside the womb??!!"
Now, I don't believe that God is at Dwayne's beck and call, but I do believe that God pulled
that child back from the dead.
I pray with my patients, on my knees, several times in a day. The ways that I have seen
God answer prayers are amazing. The nurse has walked in during prayer to tell me the prayer
had been answered. On and on….
I prayed before, but nothing happened. What was the difference? One was "the prayer of
faith"

Malachi 3:3 says: 'He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.'
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about
the character and nature of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their
next Bible Study. That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him
at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the
process of refining Silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained
that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were
hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse
that says: 'He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.' She asked the silversmith if it was true that he
had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time.
The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his
eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the
flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, 'How do you know when the
silver is fully refined?'
He smiled at her and answered, 'Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it.'
