YS 4 Your Storrington January 2015 • www.yourstorrington.co.uk YS Local News Local groups benefit from Village Day Cheque donations totalling £3,700 have been presented to a number of local charities in the community following a very successful Storrington Village Day event in June. This annual event is lead by The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District with strong support from Storrington & Sullington Parish Council, SADCASE, Chanctonbury Lions Club and other community clubs and groups. The presentations gave Village Day Committee Chairman, Norman Boyland, the opportunity to say thank you to the recipient organisations and their leaders, many of whom are volunteers, for the work they do with young people from the community. “It is great Hooper and Downer Trust Storrington First School to see money raised at this very popular community event going straight back into supporting our young people in Storrington.” Norman also thanked the event organisers and sponsors whose help in various ways enables the committee to invest up-front in the event’s attractions. The committee wants to see as many groups and organisations as possible becoming involved and exhibiting at next year’s event which will be held on Saturday 27th June 2015. Anyone interested in assisting or taking part in the event should contact Norman Boyland on 01798 815117 or at norman.boyland@ btinternet.com. 2464 Squadron Storrington Air Training Corps Beavers SPLASH Tuesday 27th January The Mary How Trust Film Society Jersey Boys 7:30pm - 11:30pm, Cert 15; 134 mins The New Year presentation from the Mary How Trust Film Society will be Jersey Boys (Cert 15; 134 mins), on Tuesday 27 January 2015 at West Chiltington Village Hall. This has made access easier and reveals the magnificence of the tree. This work has also involved cutting sections out of some of the large fallen trees, enabling some of the original pathways to be returned to use. There is still much more to be done if we are to keep the five year plan on track. Developments so far are very encouraging. The Dell is not the only area we care for. There is The Glade, West Street Garden and Riverside Walk as well. We will be clearing undergrowth from around the Walk during our next working party on Saturday 3rd January. We meet at Mill Pond at 10.00am. We invite others to enjoy with us the gentle exercise involved, it’s a good way to overcome the Christmas bulge. To take an active part in caring for our neighbourhood could be a worthy New Year resolution, and one that is easy to keep. Among other activities, we arrange conducted walks. The next ones are is on 14th January, 18th February and 18th March (all dates for your new diaries) starting from the Leisure Centre car park at 10.30am, led by Jessica Jacob along Riverside Walk and ending with coffee and cakes. Just turn up for a pleasant stroll, bring a friend. Another resolution, to relish keeping fit? For more information about all our activities, or becoming a member, get in touch with Mick Denness on 01903 745971, or look on our website www.storringtonconservation.org. uk/. Finally, best wishes for a fulfilling New Year to all. New Memorial Bench for Storrington The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District has teamed up with McCarthy & Stone to provide a new bench for the recently opened memorial garden, situated close to the rejuvenated Village pond in Storrington. This bench has been carefully sited to allow those that wish, time to enjoy peace and contemplation, in the Memorial Garden surrounds Pippa Davies said: “This is just one of the many ways that Rotary assists the local community and we are pleased to have worked together with McCarthy & Stone, and the Parish Council, to complete this project.” The coming weeks will be a very busy period for Rotary, entertaining a large group of pensioners in early January, with a film showing of the Glenn Miller Story, at Sullington Parish Hall. The picture shows four of those present at the handover ceremony, when Pippa Davies (seated Right), Vice-President of the Rotary Club, and Stella Bunce, House Manager of Storrington McCarthy & Stone, (standing left), handed over the bench to Anna Worthington-Leese, Chairman of Storrington Parish Council (seated left). Fellow Rotarians and Parish Councillors also attended. Rotary Club collection for the EBOLA Crisis Storrington Rotarians were out in force on Friday and Saturday 21 and 22 November collecting for the EBOLA Crisis Appeal. The community responded generously giving over £800. Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club chipped in and £900 was sent to help stop the spread of EBOLA which is ripping apart health services, devastating communities and destroying people’s ability to support themselves in West Africa. In advance of the big day, the Sixth Form College Charity Committee kicked off their fund raising by offering a car valet service to staff earlier in the week. Members of staff were quick to book in their cars for a wash and polish administered whilst student on-lookers enjoyed the spectacle and were able to purchase hot pizza from the Pizza Oven Van. Our head boy, who works for the Pizza Oven, served pizzas straight from the wood fired clay oven to warm the spectators, and the owners of the Pizza Oven very generously donated their takings to the NSPCC. The van can normally be found in Steyning High Street car park on Friday evenings. The annual fundraising event started early on Friday with a hearty breakfast kindly donated by our in-house catering department. The £1.50 charge for breakfast went straight into the NSPCC appeal. Students were then locked in the jails, after which they broke out and were cheered on by fellow students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The convicts made off in a collection of brightly decorated vehicles including large tractors and trailers, 4x4s, scaffolding lorries, pick-up trucks, a cement mixer – and even a boat! Tracy Bravo, Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex NSPCC, was overwhelmed by the effort made and generosity of the students. The convicts escaped and went on the run to Brighton, Hove, Shoreham, Southwick, Crawley, Lancing, Brighton, Storrington, Henfield, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Swan Walk at Horsham, and finally Horsham, stopping on route to also collect at Tooveys Auction House, Old Barn Nurseries and Sainsburys at Lyons Farm. Students also visited our Lower School site, the local Primary Schools; Steyning Primary, Upper Beeding Primary School, Jolesfield, Partridge Green together with Rydon Intermediate where they received a tremendous reception from the children. All students carried NSPCC collecting boxes and were finally recaptured at the Bandstand in Horsham. Sixth Form College musicians played as the students were rounded up by their jailors. Tracy Bravo from the NSPCC was at the school on the student’s return to supervise the count, and she thanked the students for their participation in the Jail Break and for their enthusiasm in helping others on such a large scale. Monies raised will be used to fund ongoing work including Child line. Total raised so far stands at £6,000, to be officially confirmed by the NSPCC. Mrs Randall (Assistant Head) expressed how proud the staff and parents were of the Year 13 students who had been tremendous ambassadors for their chosen charity and the school in the wider community. Our students have shown initiative, commitment and determination in making a positive difference, learning much form the experience. The support of parents, local businesses, community partners and our feeder schools was hugely appreciated. The School and students would also like to thank Horsham District Council for again allowing us to host the event and for their assistance with arrangements for parking of the vehicles, and C & L coaches who very kindly donated the use of a coach for the event. Steyning Grammar Sixth Form College is very grateful to the public for their generosity and many sponsors including Nisa Local in Upper Beeding, the Little Sweet Shop in Steyning, Spirent Communications in Crawley, C&L Coaches, S T Cowley, and the Dudman Group. With a cast of 24 which featured many of the newer members Graeme’s production was another success. The show was lively and sparkled with witty dialogue interspersed with some well known songs. The set was imaginatively designed switching from the Queen’s castle to the Dwarf’s cottage, very colourful Hannah Bullivant as Snow White gave an excellent performance looking and sounding like the Disney character we all remember from our childhood days. Maddy Gilmore captured the essence of the panto baddie in her portrayal of the Wicked Stepmother while newcomers Ian MacKenzie and Natalie Nelson shone through in their roles of Dame Hurry Up and Justin Time. It was great to see two of the younger members of the Society taking their first principle roles as Price Teddy, Anna Beer and Prince ‘erbert played by Jamie Walter, both gave excellent performances. Established members, Christine Tobitt and Michael Chapple both gave sure and polished performances as the Fairy and the King while Sue Nicel stole the show with her witty portrayal of the magic mirror expressing her boredom by completing her knitting, crosswords and even cleaning the mirror behind the Queen’s back ! The Seven Dwarfs made their appearance in the second act, each played their parts to display the characteristics to match their individual names, They were a joy to watch with their slapstick antics. Instead of learning to embroider, or play the piano, they learn plain cooking and sewing, Latin and Greek. And when they are old enough, they accompany their Mamma – herself daughter to a stern, evangelical Mamma - to her Home for the poorest and most degraded women of the Manchester working districts and slums, for she is determined that her girls will be useful and conscientious members of society. Ally, in particular, must work especially hard, for she is destined to be one of the first qualified female doctors, and must guard against her tendency to nerves and hysteria, or her Mamma will be displeased… Written in spare, poetic prose which renders the historical detail clear and fresh, this is a novel which illuminates the difficulties faced by women, both these particular women at this particular point in history, and issues common to many women through time. It is also an exploration into dynamics within a family, of motherhood and its difficulties and dysfunctions, and the legacies bequeathed from one generation to the next. Abbattoir Blues by Peter Robinson Pub Hodder and Stoughton £7.99 For those who enjoy good solid detective fiction here is Peter Robinson’s latest book in the DCI Banks series, taking its title from the Nick Cave album. Rural crime seems a little trivial for our popular detective and his team as they are tasked to investigate the theft of a tractor and then some possible blood stains in a disused aircraft hangar, but soon the tension cranks up and we are in familiar thriller territory. Devotees of this series may find the characterisations a little formulaic now, but for those who dip in and out, this well plotted novel is just the thing to read on a cold winter’s evening. YS 26 Scarlet Ibis by Gill Lewis Pub OUP £6.99 Gill’Lewis So many booksellers that I meet mention children’s writer Gill Lewis as their favourite. She draws much inspiration from the people and the animals that she has encountered in her life and travels as a vet, and her award winning novels Sky Hawk and Moon Bear reflected her great passion for animals in the wild. This new book, now in paperback, will be loved by children who enjoy a wildlife theme which contains an involving human interest story. Scarlet Ibis is the powerful story of young Scarlet who, with her autistic younger brother Red, dreams of a visit to Trinidad to see the beautiful Scarlet Ibis, and, after an accident which parts her from him, struggles to reunite her family. Suitable for children aged 10 upwards. House Held Up By Trees by Ted Kooser and Jon Klassen Walker Books £6.99 Written by the Pulitzer Award winning poet Ted Kooser and illustrated in Jon Klassen’s distinctive style, this haunting picture book charts the effect of the passing of time and the power of nature on a house and the family who live in it. Friday 5th December saw the pupils in full on charity mode, raising money for Diabetes, NSPCC and Save the Children. Pupils paid to wear a colourful collection of onesies, Christmas jumpers and numbered clothing. Mrs Steggles led her band of ‘Merry Bakers’ who then sold an amazing array of cakes, to raise £135 for the Little Maxwell charity. During morning break the school was also invaded by The Steyning Jail Break, raising funds for their chosen charity. On the same day, 49 pupils and 4 members of staff left in the early hours for Birmingham NEC, in order to visit the ‘Clothes Show Live’. The show is a fantastic place to visit if you are interested in Fashion, Media, and Make up Design. Hundreds of new and established companies showcase their products and the pupils (and staff) had lots of fun trying new products (and spending their money!). The pupils had a great time spotting and talking to celebrities such as Joey Essex, Peter Andre and Caroline Franklin (an original presenter from the Clothes Show). The day culminated in a 45 minutes live fashion show. The pupils came away so excited saying it was “the best school trip ever”. YS 28 January Update Saturday the 6th December marked the start of the annual Rotary Cooking Competition. Rydon had 6 pupils making a collection of gourmet starters, mains and desserts. The judging was led by Omero Gallucci and Robbie Jenks, Head Chef at nearby Amberley Castle. Omero commented that the standard was exceptionally high and the seasoning spot on. The runner up was Laura Hickox and Regan Younger was the deserved winner. We are certain all 6 pupils will be keen to lend a hand with Xmas lunch this year! To complete this amazing term our talented singers and musicians will be hosting a carol service at St Marys Church. We therefore rely heavily on the generosity of the local community and volunteers. By becoming a volunteer you can learn new skills, brush up on your existing ones and be welcomed as part of our team. We aim to make your volunteering experience a valuable and rewarding one, because our volunteers really are the life-blood of our organisation in so many ways. There are a wide variety of roles that you can get involved with. Read on to find out about some roles we have a particular need for: Is tinkering with cars is your thing? As a Fleet Maintenance Volunteer, you will help keep our minibuses and cars kept in pristine condition and assist with all the regular safety checks. Our Fleet Maintenance Officer, Shaun Dicker, is looking for volunteers to help him on a regular basis for around four hours per shift. He said, “This is a highly valuable role as our transport fleet provides vital support to our patients, enabling them to travel to and from the hospice, and to our clinical teams caring for patients in their own homes.” Do you have a listening ear? Our Bereavement Volunteers offer support to bereaved family and friends of patients who have received care at St Barnabas House. Listening to people and being able to empathise with them is an important skill. Rosemary Gillard is one of our Bereavement Visitor volunteers. She said, “After suffering loss of loved ones in my life, I approached St Barnabas to offer my help and was trained as a bereavement visitor. The training was enjoyable and thought provoking. Now my volunteering role is underway, I get a great amount of satisfaction knowing I can be of help to someone who is struggling with loss. I meet clients mostly at home, or sometimes at the hospice, and I thoroughly enjoy it.” Dorren Dunning Reception One of our fantastic bank volunteers is Doreen Dunning. She said, “I have great respect for the wonderful work St Barnabas House does in the community. I really feel as a volunteer that I’m part of a special team. I also enjoy the variety of helping out in various departments when they are short staffed.” If having direct contact with patients and their carers in their own homes appeals, then becoming a Community Companion is a special role that may suit you. Isolation is a big issue for many people coping with life-limiting illnesses and their carers. You will be helping people at a very difficult time in their lives by providing social and practical support during a weekly two hour visit. For this role we have two mandatory training days. Community Companion, Rita Fellows, a 75 year old grandmother from Rustington, has been visiting Mr Arthur Shaw, 88 from East Preston since December 2013. Rita said, “I absolutely love being Arthur’s Community Companion. He normally just wants to sit and chat during my visits, which we both look forward to. He is a wonderful person and has remained very positive during his illnesses and personal challenges. “His courage touches everyone he meets. We get on so well and have a lot of laughter and I have heard his life story. I have received full training and am really well supported by the team at St Barnabas House. I would highly recommend this role to anyone who is looking for a really rewarding volunteering opportunity and can spare just two or three hours per week.” A variety of days and times are available for the above roles to suit you. If you’d like to find out more and take the next step, please call Voluntary Services on 01903 706315 or email [email protected] so that we can send you an application pack. To find out more about volunteering in other areas, please visit www.stbh.org.uk/volunteering or call us, we’d love to hear from you if you’d like to help in any way. If you’re looking for more of a hands-on and flexible role, we need volunteers to work on an ad-hoc basis to help cover our reception and coffee shop during bank holidays, and for volunteer holiday and sickness cover.
