Alex Rodriguez has begun
mending fences with new Major
League Baseball commissioner
Rob Manfred, but his attempts
at a similar meeting with Yan
kees brass were declined by the
team, a source confirmed.
Those meetings won’t occur
until spring training begins in
Tampa, Fla., in less than a
month.
Rodriguez is coming off a
yearlong suspension handed
down by the league because of
his ties to the Biogenesis scan
dal — and after staying virtually
silent throughout the ban, he is
trying to ease his transition back
into the game.
Although Manfred, who
played a key role in the inves
tigation that led to Rodriguez
having to sit out 2014 and offi
cially will take over for the re
tiring Bud Selig on Sunday,
agreed to a brief session with
the slugger, the Yankees did
not.
According to sources, the
Yankees weren’t interested in
having discussions with Rod
riguez before he arrives at
spring training in Tampa next
month.
Those requests, according to
someone familiar with the situa
tion, began while Rodriguez still
was suspended and before he
dropped his lawsuit against
team physician Dr. Christopher
Ahmad.
Rodriguez has spoken to Yan
kees general manager Brian
Cashman, and the GM has made
it clear he has no real expecta
tions for Rodriguez, who is
owed $61 million through 2017
by the team.
Although the Yankees re
signed Chase Headley to play
third base, Rodriguez appears
determined to compete for the
starting job at third, and has
worked out with retired players
such as Barry Bonds and Edgar
Martinez.
Coming off a season of inac
tivity, Rodriguez will turn 40 in
July and has had surgery on both
hips.
He faces no further discipline
from MLB as long as no new in
formation is disclosed.
