JACKSON STREET OF DREAMS BREAKS GROUND IN GARY
Earlier Thursday, the Fuller Center for Housing of Gary (FCH Gary), in partnership with the City of Gary, hosted a
groundbreaking ceremony. at 2456 Jackson St. This event was held in conjunction with the City’s “Jackson Street of
Dreams” program and FCH Gary’s plans to build 2 new homes and rehabilitate 2 homes in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of
Jackson Street.
“We are extremely excited about the upcoming makeover that this area will receive,” said Gary Mayor Karen FreemanWilson. “We intend to continue our work with the Fuller Center and identify more opportunities to build and rehab homes
across the city.”

GARY TO RECEIVE $6.6 MILLION IN HARDEST HIT FUNDS
Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann today announced that five Indiana cities received a combined award of more than $15 million
to help eliminate blighted and abandoned homes in those communities through the Hardest Hit Fund Blight Elimination
Program (BEP). The five initial cities are East Chicago, Gary, Hammond, Indianapolis and Lawrence. They are the successful
applicants in the first of six rounds of funding that will make a total of $75 million available for blight elimination to reduce
foreclosures. City of Gary officials received word earlier today that it will receive $6.6 million.

SUMMER CAMPS TO BE HOSTED BY YSB AND GARY PARKS DEPT.
The Youth Services Bureau and Parks sponsored summer camps begin June 16th and end August 1st. An all-boys
camp (Raise the BAR) will be held at Brunswick Park, the GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) camp will take place at Reed Park
and Summer Jam camps will take place at Glen Ryan, Cafe 839, and Ironwood Park. All camps will feature breakfast
provided by the Foodbank of NWI and lunch provided by the YSB and Parks. Summer feeding and activities will also take

CITY ANNOUNCES REQUESTS FOR PROPOSAL
Please be advised that the City of Gary’s Department of Commerce, Community Development Division, is accepting
Requests for Proposals (RFP’s) for federal dollars in anticipation of an award for Program Year 2015. The City expects to
submit an application (Annual Action Plan) to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), and HOME Investment Partnerships
Program.
The City of Gary is accepting RFP’s/Applications for funding for the following types of projects/activities:
 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) - Public Services only
 Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) - Emergency Shelter Operations, Rapid Re-housing, Homelessness Prevention, and
Street Outreach
 HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) - CHDO Operating (Only for certified CHDO’s); CHDO Set-Aside (Only
for certified CHDO’s to develop affordable housing); and Developers (Only to develop affordable housing)
All applications for potential funding, under the City’s proposed 2015 Annual Action Plan, can be picked up from Michelle L.
Williams at the City of Gary’s Department of Commerce, Community Development Division, 839 Broadway, Suite 302N,
Gary, IN 46402, beginning June 2, 2014 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The deadline for submitting completed
applications is June 30, 2014 by 4:30 p.m. There will be no exceptions. Electronic versions of the applications can be
requested, but hard copies of the application must be turned in personally.
Each entity must provide its DUNS number in each application submitted to the City of Gary. Each entity that applies must
be registered in the System Award Management (SAM) at www.sam.gov prior to submitting an application; maintain an
active registration with current information at all times during which it has an active Federal award or an application under
consideration by the City of Gary. Each entity must provide proof of registration with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services’ E-Verify Program as defined in IC 22-5-1.7-3 and verify the work eligibility status of all his/her/its newly hired
employees through the E-Verify program. Entities are not required to participate if self-employed and do not employ any
employees.
The factors to be considered during this process will include an evaluation of the following areas:
 the nature, eligibility, and fundability of the proposed activity;
 other funding sources;
 whether the proposed plan for carrying out the activity is realistic;
 the organization’s capacity to carry out the work and do it in a timely manner;
 the organization’s capacity to carry out quantified goals and objectives to meet desired outcomes;
 the possibility of any potential conflicts of interest or duplication of efforts;
 the correlation of activities of the Annual Action Plan and program priorities as identified in the Five-Year Strategic
Plan; and
 the adequacy of program design or service delivery approach.
Your cooperation in keeping with the deadline date is critical to being considered for funding. Applications submitted after
this date will not be considered. Proposals that are handwritten, faxed, or emailed will not be accepted. If you have any

UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
The members of the NWI Leadership Council are reaching out to students and parents
to apply for the 2014 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) scholarships. The scholarship program provides up to $5,000 needbased scholarship awards to selected applicants who are permanent residents of Lake, LaPorte, and Porter counties. The
application cycle is open now through May 30, 2014. Mrs. Cynthia Powers, Chairperson, highlighted this opportunity as “a
major step in increasing access to higher education for local students.”
Candidates for this scholarship are expected to be involved in school and community leadership roles and have exhibited
qualities of high character and integrity. The minimum GPA is 2.5. Any student who has applied for the scholarship
program in the past must create a new user profile and registration ID to access the application.

application properly in order to be considered a candidate.

Dear Friends and Family
I learned this week that I have been accepted to the Debbie Allen Dance Intensive
in Los Angeles!!!! I auditioned by video, and was accepted as soon as they
received it. I will be in LA from June 29 until July 27. I am asking you to support
me and become a member of my Dance Village. I need to raise money for tuition and room and board while I
am in LA.
Many of you have known me since I was a baby, and my great grandmother Barbara Leek took me to meetings.
The rest of you know my mom, Crystal O’Brien, or my dad Gino Watson or my great grandmother Jessica
Watson. All of them have encouraged me on my dance journey.
I started my dance training at DancExcel Champion Center for the Creative Arts in Gary, Indiana when I was two.
The Director of DancExcel is Dionne Champion. My current classes are Hip Hop, African, Modern, Ballet, and
Tap. Last August I was selected for the Junior Company. I have performed in each recital for the last seven
years; this year will be my eighth. Once I was eight I was able to perform in the annual Spirit of the Baobab Tree
production, a “dancumentary” about African American History. I have also participated in two summer
intensives at DancExcel: 2012 Imagination Camp, and 2013 STEM and Dance. It was exciting to use technology
with dance. Last November I was in the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade. I have also performed as a dancer in four
community theatre productions by the West Side Theatre Guild under the direction of Mark Spencer and Asia
Dickens. I also attend Asia’s Dance Factory classes at my school two days a week. I have performed at a
Mindless Behavior concert and in the opening act for the Peking Acrobats
I participate in the praise dance ministry at my church, and at my school.

The Center for Urban and Regional Excellence at Indiana University Northwest
offers courses for lifestyle enrichment and career enhancement through its Adult
Education program. Courses are taught on campus, and at multiple locations in
Northwest Indiana.
