, By Ginny P. Brown Linda & Gary True Linda and Gary True are two of the most personable people you would ever hope to meet. The minute you meet them you feel like you have been best friends for years. When I first approached them about writing this article, Linda declined. She said, “We don’t do anything. You need to find someone who does more than we do to write about.” I waited about two years and asked them again. This time I was fortunate enough to get their permission. I had known Linda some years ago when we were both on staff at Brentwood High School. I only knew Gary as her husband. Here are some interesting facts about them you may not know: Linda and Gary met in Nashville in the early seventies. Gary owned his own business, Mid-South Pump Sales and Service. Linda worked at Alman Construction Company. These two businesses often worked together on projects and it was through that that they became acquainted. They knew each other for about ten years before they married on July 31, 1982. Both had children from previous marriages (Gary, one; Linda, two) so they became a blended family and moved to the Brentwood area. They were fortunate to move into a neighborhood where they had some very nice neighbors who were active in Brentwood Baptist Church, and they invited them to visit our church. Mike and Susan Barnett lived next door and the late Reuben Cline lived across the street. Soon they began to attend our church and became actively involved. It was not until 1991, however, that they officially became members. Linda has taught second grade Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for ten years. She is on the SeniorLink Leadership Team. She is in charge of the table decorations for our Thursday night monthly dinners. In addition, she has served as a mentor for CWJC (Christian Women’s Job Corps), an organization sponsored by the Women’s Missionary Union. This organization serves to train women with little or no skills to enter the working world. She now serves on the executive committee for that group. She has also been on a mission trip with Gary to Pearlington, Mississippi. Gary, who has an engineering degree from the University of Arkansas, has been on several mission trips to Pearlington, Mississippi, over the last few years. He and Charles Mashburn have been active participants there and at the Copper Basin Mission in eastern Tennessee, where they helped to repair and refurbish old bicycles to give to the children in that area at Christmas time. He also assists Charles Mashburn in organizing, supervising, and maintaining a plot in our church garden. He has been a deacon since 2011 and serves on the Committee for the Lord’s Supper preparation. He works in Vacation Bible School as well. In their leisure time, they enjoy spending time with their five grandchildren who live in Texas, Ohio, and South Carolina. Linda enjoys reading and is presently learning to knit. She and Susan Barnett work together to prepare flower arrangements for weddings and other church events. Gary loves all types of sports. They enjoy traveling and have taken cruises to Hawaii and Alaska. Red-Mesh Christmas Stockings for Copper Basin By Carolyn Simmons You may think that it is too early to think about Christmas, but time has passed on this year and Christmas is just around the corner. This leads to the reminder that we will be filling the red mesh Christmas stockings again this year for the children of Copper Basin Crisis Center in Ducktown, Tennessee. The stockings will be distributed during the September 19 SeniorLink Dinner and to the church on October 6 and 13. The stockings will then be collected at the SeniorLink ON THE CALENDAR Brentwood Breakfast Club Our guest artists in September are Nashville-based music professionals----Bill and Jeanine Walker. They met “on the road” while Jeanine was performing with the Kids Next Door variety group out of Los Angeles and Bill was Music Director for Eddy Arnold. Bill had already taken Nashville by storm as an arranger on such hit recordings as Make the World Go Away for Eddy Arnold, and Roses are Red for Bobby Vinton. Jeanine made her way to Nashville a few years later to replace Anita Kerr in her world-renowned vocal quartet, which later became known as the Sounds Incorporated. SEPTEMBER 2013 Dinner on October 17 and in the Atrium on October 20 and 27. They may be returned through October 31. You may bring them to the atrium or leave them at the reception desk at Entrance B. This project is an ongoing mission project for the SeniorLink ministry. Actually, that would be, virtually, on the big screen behind Brad. In May 2012, Brad requested choir members to record choral backgrounds for two songs, Southern Comfort Zone and Those Crazy Christians, for a new album entitled Wheelhouse which would be released April 2013. This led to taping choir members singing to be shown on the big screen on his 2013 tour and also to sing live at the CMA Awards in November 2012. Christians are observed daily. The lyrics of Those Crazy Christians are written from the point of view of a skeptic. Brad states in Parade magazine, “I wrote this song shortly after my cousin-in-law passed away in 2011. He was young and he fought against a debilitating disease. There weren’t five minutes of intensive care that there weren’t at least two church members at the hospital, around the clock, and I remember thinking, what makes people take shifts for somebody they haven’t known very long? Well, it’s belief.” Check out the words of the song: Those crazy Christians, I was gonna sleep in tod ay But the church bells wo ke me up and they’re a half a mile away Those crazy Christians, dressed up drivin’ down my street Get their weekly dose of guilt before they head to Applebee’s They pray before they eat and they pray before the y snore They pray before a footba ll game and every time they score Every untimely passing , every dear departed sou l Is just another good exc use to bake a casserole Those crazy Christians, go and jump on some airp lane And fly to Africa or Haiti, risk their lives in Jesus’ nam e No, they ain’t the late nig ht party kind They curse the devil’s wh iskey while they drink the Savior’s wine A famous TV preacher has a big affair and then One tearful confession and he’s born again aga in Someone yells hallelujah and they shout and clap and sing It’s like they can’t wait to forgive someone for just about anything Those crazy Christians Instead of being outsid e on this sunny afternoon They’re by the bedside of a stranger in a cold hos pital room And every now and the n they meet a poor lost soul like me Who’s not quite sure just who or what or how he ought to be They march him down the aisle and then the next thing that you know They dunk him in the wat er and here comes ano ther one of those crazy Christians They look to heaven the ir whole life And I think what if they’re wrong but what if they’re right You know it’s funny, mu ch as I’m baffled by it all If I ever really needed hel p, well you know who I’d call It’s those crazy Christian s Bulletin Board Did You Know? I was so excited when I applied for a plot and thanks to the “garden crew” my plot was tilled and ready to be planted this late spring. Along with my neighbor, Joanne, we planted okra, tomatoes, beets, more tomatoes, beans, and of course that staple vegetable – squash. We stood amazed as we watched those tiny seeds become huge plants and produce some wonderful food – God is good. When we did not know the planting instructions, someone would come by and Did you know that acco rding to the following study, singing is good for your health? A 2006 study conduc ted by researchers an d musicians from George Washington University and funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National En dowment for the Arts, and other organizatio ns, found that senior s who participated in ch oral singing for a year experienced less depre ssion and loneliness and used less medicati on than those who did not join a choir. They also had fewer doctor’s visits and experienced improvements in their breathing, singing, an d speaking, as well as in their overall stami na compared to the ir counterparts. (Tom Wa tt 4/24/13) share their information. We met new people and shared our farming experience and lack of knowledge. We could not wait as days turned into weeks but then the harvest appeared and everyone was claiming “good things are worth waiting for.” This year was a productive garden year in the Mission Garden and we thank God for the good soil, rain, good seeds, and plants. We were so pleased to share some produce with family and friends. Can’t wait until next year because I think I have learned how to have the perfect, productive, insect-free garden at BrentwoodBaptist. “Getting down and dirty is fun!” Ticket Prices $42.00 each Center, Right Aisle Main floor $34.50 each Back Row Main Floor Last chance to purch ase tickets will be at the September 19th Senio rLink Fellowship Dinne r.
