Overview of the WLTP-EU database short trip
analysis
by H. Steven

1
Categorisation of the Database
H.S.
•
The WLTP in-use database contains second by second
data from Europe, India, Japan, Korea and US.
•
For the analysis the WLTP in-use data was divided into
short trips and stop phases.
•
Stop phases are time periods with vehicle speeds < 1
km/h, a short trip is a time period with v >= 1 km/h
between two consecutive stops.
•
A further segmentation of the data was done with
respect to the max. speed of a short trip:
 Low phase: v_max <= 60 km/h,
 Medium phase: 60 km/h < v_max <= 80 km/h,
 High phase: 80 km/h < v_max <= 110 km/h,
 Extra high phase: v_max > 110 km/h.
2
Categorisation of the Database
H.S.
•
This schema was chosen in order to ease the
comparability of in-use data from different regions of
the world (India, Japan, Korea, US)
•
This presentation focusses on the European part of
the database.
•
The EU part of the WLTP in-use database contains data
from the following member states:
 Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, France,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK.
•
Within the short trips the following driving condition
phases were differentiated:

Short trip duration distribution
H.S.
•
The following figures show the duration and distance
distributions of the short trips for the four speed
classes, number and distance or time weighted.
•
The major part of the short trips in the low speed class
is shorter than 2 min. And even for the extra high
speed part 50% of the short trips are below 13 min.
•
The distance weighting changes this situation to
longer durations: The short trips below 13 min in extra
high represent less than 20% of the total mileage.

Driving condition distributions
H.S.
•
Table 2 shows the duration distributions of the
acceleration phases for the short trips of the four
speed classes.
•
All phases have durations below 1 min.
•
Figure 5 shows the duration distributions of the cruise
phases for the short trips of the four speed classes.
•
These phases are significantly longer than the others.
•
Table 3 shows the duration distributions of the
deceleration phases for the short trips of the four
speed classes.
•
The durations of the deceleration phases tend to be a
bit longer than the acceleration phases, but the
differences are very low.
