Anti-fall guard and simple person rescue
When used by fire brigades and the type of hazards that need to be secured, the term anti-fall
guard must be defined differently as compared to the traditional work safety requirements in
the industry. The hazard parameters, connected to a technical rescue service, e. g. collisions in
the fall area, removal and guarding of storm damages on roofs, even perceived simple activities
such as the removal of snow, etc., must be classified as significantly more multifaceted and critical if compared to the secured activities at exposed work places and standardized protection
equipment!
Anti-fall guard with fire brigade work position
belt and fire brigade rope is not in accordance
with the state of technology. The law views
the application as negligent even if it is directed or tolerated. The fire brigade would be
liable in case of damages.
Carabiners – The HMS form (pear form) carabiner was recommended in earlier equipment
recommendations as the universal carabiner.
However, this does not consider that the HMS
form was designed exclusively for working
with munter hitches for the HMS guard.
Function components
Safety chain/safety reserves
Safety harness/roping – The significantly
increased risk of falling – often in connection
with additional loads such as rescue pack or
breathing apparatus and other protective
equipment as well as long hanging times
under certain circumstances – only view harnesses as meaningful and safe for these applications if they are equipped with certain
design features.
The HMS carabiner has only limited qualifications for attaching, connecting or a interim
guard because the forces are not transferred
optimally to the carabiner leg. Tests by BGBergbau confirmed this. For this reason, our
recommendation is:
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
Indirectly, this is also applicable for the safety
chain of the anti-fall guard.
The performance of the safety chain is determined by the interaction of all components.
Function components – are all equipment
components that are actually used (belt,
rope, slings, etc.). For application areas that
frequently require approaches outside of the
standardized processes of traditional work
safety, the equipment performance should be
good enough to ensure that hidden risks (e. g.
sharp edges) as well as application errors are
compensated (nobody is perfect!).
I. e. the performance of the equipment should
be better than the minimum requirements established in the respective standards.
• additional sharp edge inspection for dynamic
ropes,
• increased breaking load values for carabiner
and slings,
14
• special ergonomic requirements for the belt
system, which must make it possible to experience an acceptable hanging while wearing
breathing protection equipment! DIN 14800-17 especially refers to this requirement. We therefore recommend a hanging
test before purchase!
Human components – These are the users and
the associated professional proficiency!
Only a solid training base, frequent schooling
and training make it possible to avoid mistakes.
Safety cannot be achieved with even the highest performance equipment if proficiency and
knowledge are only based on a superficial and
therefore very dangerous foundation of half
knowledge and overestimating of one's own
capabilities.
FwDV 1 – Section 17.3.3 Safety information
Personal protection equipment against falls
must only be used by those persons who completed a required training in accordance with
the country legislation or the principles of the
accident insurance carrier.
The acceptance of harness systems – designed
for standard requirements of industrial safety
(prevention), for rescue and for work with antifall guards during fire brigade actions – without critical reviews can result in life threatening situations.
The use of a rear safety eye for these purposes
must be classified as especially critical. This is
the reason why DIN 14800-17 does not list this
hook option in its description of the minimum
requirements for harness systems.
BKS Heyrothsberge therefore recommends
especially the use of chest and seating harness
combinations!
• HMS carabiner (pear form) with 3-way lock
for working with HMS knots.
• D carabiner with screw-lock and very high
“Latch-open strength” min. 10 kN, for attaching and for interim guards.
Rope – The listed fall number and the sharp
edge resistance especially characterize this
safety reserve of the “Life thread”. The safety
buffer increases as the fall number increases.
The current state of technology are >14 falls.
The largest hazard sources that must never be overlooked are sharp edges. This is why all dynamic ropes offered by Bornack rope are also tested against sharp edges in accordance with the German armed forces standard
TL 4020-0016.
Slings – The slings of the ProTEC series have an
rated break load, which is 5 kN higher than the
standard, to guarantee that the user has safety
reserves.

LORY-01 Fix – with solidly integrated rope. This
configuration guarantees a maximum of manipulation safety and error prevention against
wrong rope insertions. The technology of the
equipment is designed in such a way that the
brake tappet stops the fall during a fall load.
The tappet can be unlocked by using a brake
lever and the fallen person can be lowered
to the ground. The additional overload guard
against too fast lowering is an additional significant safety factor.
The HMSplus safety set complements the Bornack family of safety options for fire brigade
manpower optimally by an option for the manpower who view the manual establishment of the
HMS and the figure of eight as too prone to errors
during stressful use and who view a semi-automatic safety device, e. g. the Lory as “too complex”.
Use experience has shown again and again that
– despite in-depth training – error occur during
stress situation when establishing a munter hitch
guard as well as during the embedding of the antifall guard at the use force for each figure of eight.
The HMS plus safety set addresses this issue. The
embedding is replaced by two opposite carabiners
and the HMS is pre-pierced at the operating point.
Therefore it must only be connected at the hookon point. This pre-packaging saves significant time
and increases the safety because the safety person
can focus completely on the operation. Rope

Other advantages offered by
Bornack are the tactile center
marking and the rope end guard
light. If compared to a marking with only a rope color, the tactile
center marking is a very durable
marking of the center of the rope,
which guarantees that the safety
persons have an optimal and durable indication that they reached half of the rope
length and that a different emergency fall management system must possibly be made available
in case of a fall, because a simple lowering to the
ground may not be possible.

Tripod D 1000
EN 795 | EN 1496 | CE 0158
As compared to the standard tripods, the extreme elongation height and the extraordinary
large spread diameter permit the use for very
difficult shaft and container entrances.
The enormous elongation height has significant advantages especially when used by the
fire brigade or THW (Abbr. for “technisches
Hilfswerk” = technical support group), because
the elongation can be achieved easily even for
vertical staged rescue stretchers.
This application cannot be realized in rescue
cases if standard tripods are used.
The extremely stable design requires not additional anchorings. This means that it can also
be positioned in very tight spaces.
Unique details, such a plastic guides and end
stops at the telescope pipes significantly improve the service life, handling and safety.
Three anchor points in the head of the
tripod and in addition three pluggable
head deflection pulleys offer versatile
application options.
The installation is achieved through
locking pins.
The modular hanging system permits in a simple manner the vertical and the horizontal application. The stretcher mounting suspension itself does not need carabiners, which can tilt or
open unintentionally.

The professional combination for fire brigade –
equipment and training
Equipment set for single person rescue in acc. with DIN 14800-16
Equipment set anti-fall guard in acc. with DIN 14800-17
Safety information (FwDV 1 / 2006 – section 17.3.3)
Personal protection equipment against falls must only be used
by those persons who completed a required training in accordance with the country legislation or the principles of the accident insurance carrier
Both equipment sets can be combined perfectly to execute a
person rescue efficiently and safe.
Both equipment sets complement each other ideally, which
guarantees that a single person rescue can be executed with a
redundancy or that a professional person guard can be executed
in exposed terrain with the risk of falling. However, a correct,
safe and efficient application is only possible if the user knows
the functions and options as well as the limits and risks and if
the users have been trained for the safe handling.
Subject to technical changes
In addition to the perfectly matched equipment sets, BORNACK offers also professional training.

Instructions and training
Based on a modular training concept, a coordinated training
program, whose content and scope is in accordance with the
recommendations of the fire and disaster protection school
Heyrothsberge, is being offered to the fire brigades to meet
their training requirements.
• Basic training anti-fall guarding (24 UE) – incl. PSA expertise
• Advanced training to multiplier anti-fall guard (16 UE)
• Simple person rescue with Rollgliss rescue equipment – incl. Rollgliss expertise
The entire training will be provided in the BORNACK training
center, in a worldwide unique training scenery and with focus
on the most different training scenarios. Independent of the
weather, all possible emergency situations can be created for
training purposes up to a height / depth of 80 m.
The group sizes will be kept very small and will be limited to 5
persons per trainer to achieve maximum efficiency during the
practical training and the highest level of training quality.
The BORNACK trainers are all qualified as “Height Rescuer

Manual anti-fall guarding and height rescue
In addition to the transfer of theoretical and
organizational basic knowledge, the focus of
the manual is on the clearly defined separation of the segments anti-fall guard and
height rescue with the respective presentation of standardized work and rescue techniques, which address the specific requirements of this emergency segment.
This manual for practical use is a guideline for
the fire fighter, the height rescuer, the responsible managers for the fire brigades as well as
all interested persons who – as part of their
work– are involved with the subjects of antifall guarding and height rescue. The manual
was developed by the authors based on their
many years of experience as height rescue
trainers in the segments training, emergency
reaction and organization.
