F-gases
Fluorinated gases (‘F-gases’) are man-made gases used in a range of industrial applications. Because they do not damage the
atmospheric ozone layer, they are often
used as substitutes for ozone-depleting
substances. However, F-gases can stay in
the atmosphere for centuries and contribute to a global greenhouse effect, with
a global warming effect up to 8000 times
greater than carbon dioxide (CO2), and
their emissions are rising strongly.
The three groups of F-gases are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons
(PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).
HFCs are by far the most relevant F-gases
from a climate perspective.
F-gases account for 2% of the EU’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, but F-gas
emissions have risen by 60% since 1990
in contrast to all other greenhouse gases,
which have been reduced.
F-gas emissions
to be cut by two-thirds by 2030
The European Union is therefore taking regulatory action to control F-gases as part
of its policy to combat climate change.
A new Regulation, which replaces the first
and applies from 1 January 2015, strengthens the existing measures and introduces a number of far-reaching changes. By
2030 it will cut the EU’s F-gas emissions
by two-thirds compared with 2014 levels.
This represents a fair and cost-efficient
contribution by the F-gas sector to the EU’s
objective of cutting its overall greenhouse
gas emissions by 80-95% of 1990 levels
by 2050.
The expected cumulative emission savings are 1.5 Gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent
by 2030 and 5 Gigatonnes by 2050. The
latter number is more than the CO2 produced by a billion return flights from Paris
to New York.

GWP
Global-warming potential (GWP) is a relative measure
of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere.
It compares the amount of heat trapped by a certain
mass of the gas in question to the amount of heat trapped by a similar mass of carbon dioxide.
A GWP is calculated over a specific time interval, commonly 20, 100 or 500 years. GWP is expressed as a
multiplying factor of carbon dioxide value that is standardized equal to GWP=1.
In the past, refrigerants artificial category HCFC (HydroChloro-Fluoro-Carbides) were used but, later were banded because they were one of main causes of Ozone
layer depletion (high ODP value).
Currently mainly used refrigerants as HCFC subsitutes,
belong to HFC category (Hydro-Fluoro-Carbides) with
ODP=0, but with still strong greenhouse effect (HIgh
GWP).
Natural refrigerants (R744, R717) and hydrocarbons HC
(R290) represent an alternative to HFCs but with several
implications and limitations.
New chemical refrigerants belonging to HFO category (Hydro-Fluoro-Olefin) like R1234ze/R1234yf
offer a good alternative to HFC, offering:
• Adaptation to exhisting Chillers Design
• Higher Efficiency
• Longer life of components
• Suitable for all climate zones

MICROCHANNEL
ALUMINIUM COIL
Kappa Rev LGW units use this new generation of condensing coil on chiller section as standard.
This means:
•Extended life cycle
•10% overall chiller weight reduction
•less air side pressure drop
30% less refrigerant
LEAK
DETECTION
The unit is equipped of a leak
detector located in the compressor compartement, with
the pump down function that
encloses the refrigerant in the
condensing coil.
R1234ze has been classified on
safety group 2 for PED (european standard).
