A
variety of questions currently
surround the health care field: • Will I get the care I need?
• What does reform mean to me? • Where should I turn for care?
Even with this uncertainty, you can
count on Olympic Medical Center’s
commitment to provide residents
of the North Olympic Peninsula with
high-quality medical care as steadfast
as ever.
As we continue this effort, we must
address three factors – an uncertain
economy, the Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act (health care
reform) and electronic medical record
(EMR) requirements. Together, these
represent game-changing forces for
Olympic Medical and the health care
industry as a whole.
In the coming year, Olympic
Medical plans to address these three

and seamlessly refer patients for
services not performed at the local level. We’re also reviewing EMR
options and working to select the most appropriate and effective
system possible. These steps, along with efforts to increase quality
and reduce waste using Lean process improvement, will help us work
to achieve Medicare Accountable Care Organization status by 2014,
which will help us better manage Medicare reimbursements.
The generous support we received through the OMC Foundation
in 2010 is amazing. We greatly appreciate the work of volunteers
and the funds raised through a variety of special events. For more
information about just how important your support has been, see
pages 8 and 9 for a look back at the Foundation’s astounding success
in 2010.
As we move further into 2011, we look forward to being
your trusted health care provider of choice for years to come. No
matter what questions arise, one answer will always be the same –
yes, we’re committed to being here for your future health care needs.

Another Successful Year
Uniting to Give
T
he employee-driven United Way Combined Fund Drive
led another successful campaign in 2010, raising more than
$137,000 for the United Way and internal OMC charities.
“Olympic Medical Center has by far the most successful public
hospital-based employee campaign in the state of Washington,” says
Jody Moss, executive director of the United Way of Clallam County.
“We are so thankful for OMC employees and their spirit of giving.”
The campaign relies most heavily on direct donations via payroll
deduction and donation of vacation hours, and nearly 600 employees
contributed in this fashion. The Combined Fund Drive committee also
coordinated a basket raffle and a holiday shopping spree.
“Despite a tough economy the past few years, our employees
continue to give what they can to the United Way and our internal
OMC charities,” says Stacie Neff, co-chair of the Combined Fund
Drive committee and quality analyst at Olympic Medical.
“It is reflective of our culture here. Olympic Medical employees
really care for the health and well-being of our community. We
don’t just provide medical services; we are friends and neighbors,”
adds Bobby Beeman, co-chair of the Combined Fund Drive
committee and communication and health promotions coordinator
at Olympic Medical.
The 2010 Combined Fund Drive committee also included: Sabrina
Clark, physical therapy and rehabilitation; Heather Delplain, human
resources; Lillian Domning, dietary services; Patti Green, patient
relations; Eric Lewis, CEO; Sally Rowland, medical staff services;
Sandy Smith, human resources;
Sharon Stevenson, physician
relations; and Karen Thompson,

A Healthy Attitude about
Employee Wellness
E

and wellness is of
utmost importance to
Olympic Medical Center
and key to its success
as a health care
provider. In 2010, the
organization’s Wellness
committee embarked
on several activities
to increase employee

awareness of health and
wellness options.
“Giving our employees tools to be healthier and stay well is the
right thing to do,” says Rhonda Curry, 2010 co-chair of the Wellness
committee and assistant administrator. “Healthy and fit employees
are also happier and more satisfied.”
Activities in 2010 included a “Salad Day” at Olympic Medical
Center’s Medical Services Building in Sequim, installation of a
bike rack at Olympic Medical Cancer Center, a “Take the Steps”
campaign, “Your Shoes are Lonely” employee outreach for the
OMC 10K/5K and the First Annual Robert Boardman Memorial
Employee Health Fair, named after an active committee member
who died unexpectedly while doing what he loved – hiking in the
Olympic Mountains.
“Bob spent significant time helping craft a health survey for our
employees and helping provide direction on our activities,” says
Curry. “He was a beacon of healthy living, and it only made sense for
us to memorialize Bob in this way.”
The 2010 Wellness committee also included: Ken Berkes, physical
therapy and rehabilitation; Robert Boardman, diabetes education;
Susan Cooper, Olympic Medical Cancer Center; Mike Crawford,
Olympic Medical Physicians; Jessica Edwards, nursing; Graciela Harris,
nutrition services; Eric Lewis, CEO; Kathy Matriotti, diagnostic
imaging; Genny Monahan, Olympic Medical Home Health; Richard
Newman, human resources; Mic Sager, finance; co-chair Judy Tordini,
cardiac services; and Katelyn Walters, Specialty Clinic Sequim.
Battling the Flu by Choice
O
lympic Medical Center’s employee influenza (flu) vaccination
rate was the highest ever in 2010, with 90.1 percent of
employees obtaining their annual flu vaccination. Olympic Medical is
working on obtaining 100 percent through the “Choice Program,” a
program that mandates all employees who decline a flu vaccination
or are unable to obtain one for health reasons must wear a mask
during a declared flu season period in patient care areas or in shared
employee areas.
“We are happy with our flu shot compliance in 2010,” says
Richard Newman, chief human resources officer. “Although we’d
like to have 100 percent of our employees vaccinated for influenza,
our high flu vaccination rate certainly makes us a leader in the state among hospitals. Our high vaccination rate
provides a safer environment for our patients and their families.”

REFLECTING ON
a Year of Growth and Partnership
Two new physicians joined the Olympic Medical Cancer Center team in 2010, including Erin Nelli, DO, medical oncologist,
and Michael Shevach, MD, radiation oncologist.
Last year, Olympic Medical Center laid the groundwork for an exciting future by adding a host of new
specialists, expanding cancer care, partnering with nearby hospitals and reaching out to urban hospitals
to offer expanded services and increase the reach and success of our electronic medical records (EMR)
system. Read on to learn more about the additions and initiatives that made 2010 successful.
Growing Our Cancer Services
As an affiliate of the Seattle Cancer
Care Alliance, Olympic Medical is
dedicated to providing residents with
world-class resources for cancer
diagnosis and treatment. In 2010, we
enhanced this mission by welcoming
Erin Nelli, DO, medical oncologist,
and Michael Shevach, MD, radiation
oncologist, to the cancer center team.
Olympic Medical also formalized an
agreement with Jefferson Healthcare
that enables our cancer specialists to
more conveniently treat patients in
Jefferson County.
“We decided to invest in the most
advanced technology on the market to
complement our physician expertise,”
says Rhonda Curry, assistant administrator
4
www.olympicmedical.org
of strategic development at Olympic
Medical. “With the installation of the
Varian TrueBeam™ linear accelerator – in
the spring of 2011 at the Thomas Family
Cancer Center facility in Sequim – our
physicians can deliver radiation therapy to
patients faster and with greater precision
than ever before.”
Welcoming New Faces to
Our Medical Staff
The great schools, abundant natural
beauty and friendly people of this region
add up to a fantastic place to raise
a family. Last year, 18 new providers
discovered that fact for themselves
thanks in part to Olympic Medical’s
recruitment efforts. The addition of
physicians in specialties including
oncology, emergency medicine, family
practice, general surgery, pediatrics and
orthopaedic surgery ensures Olympic
Medical is able to meet the health care
needs of friends and neighbors.
A Picture-Perfect Partnership
Radiology is essential to the diagnosis
and treatment of many medical
conditions, which is why Olympic
Medical partnered with Radia®, a
radiology and vascular surgery group
comprised of more than 70 physicians, in
late 2009.
“We get the best of both worlds by
working with Radia,” says Eric Lewis,
CEO of Olympic Medical. “Patients have
around-the-clock access to four talented
radiologists who live in Clallam County,
as well as the support of a large group
with subspecialty expertise.”
In October 2010, Olympic Medical
launched TeleStroke, a program
developed for patients who arrive in the
emergency department with stroke-like
symptoms. An emergency medicine
physician evaluates the patient on-site,
and a board-certified neurologist at
Swedish Medical Center in Seattle is
available for consults via real-time video
communication 24 hours a day.
“When the service is needed, we send
a patient’s imaging tests and lab work to
a neurologist at Swedish Medical Center
electronically, and the neurologist speaks
with the patient, his or her family, and
an emergency medicine physician on a
monitor,” says Lewis. “TeleStroke is a big
step forward for stroke care, especially in
rural areas such as ours.”
Joining Together
In collaboration with Forks
Community Hospital and Jefferson
Healthcare, we set out to seek an
affiliation with a tertiary medical center
to allow each of our organizations to
bolster clinical care and give patients
access to services that can’t be found
on the North Olympic Peninsula. The
hospital partners reached out to seven
tertiary facilities in 2010 and will finalize
an affiliation with one in 2011.
“In challenging economic times,
affiliating with a tertiary medical center
will allow us to provide more high-quality
local services with greater efficiency,”
Lewis says. “As part of the affiliation, we’d
like to expand our cardiac, orthopaedic
and endocrinology services, as well as link
our EMR with theirs.”
Olympic Medical Home Health is one
of only 11 agencies nationwide to be
recognized in the Top 500 every year
since the award’s inception, and the
organization placed in the prestigious Top
100 during four of those five years.
“Olympic Medical Home Health is
the only Medicare-certified home health
provider in the region,” says Curry. “Our
dedicated professionals travel across a
large geographic area to provide care for
people where they’re most comfortable
– in their own homes.”
Pointing the Way for Patients
Sometimes hospitals can seem
a bit hard to navigate. That’s why
professional wayfinding experts worked
with Olympic Medical to help identify
places to install new signs around the
hospital. The wayfinding signs feature
photographs of local beaches and
forests, courtesy of the Port Angeles
Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“The hospital has undergone many
revisions throughout the years, but we
had not comprehensively addressed
signage until the fall of 2010,” Lewis says.
“Installing new signage was an example
of listening to what our patients and their
families were telling us and responding to
their concerns.”
Moving Forward With EMR
Last year was a landmark time for
EMR implementation, as Olympic
Medical Physicians’ primary care, specialty
and surgery clinics in Port Angeles and
Sequim joined the system. Thanks to the
EMR, providers can now access patients’
charts at a moment’s notice and send
electronic prescription orders directly to
the pharmacy.
“The goals of EMR are to improve
management of chronic diseases, facilitate
safer care and better communication,
and increase the efficiency of health care
delivery,” Lewis says. “It’s been a long
journey to implement EMR – one that
will continue in 2011 and beyond – but
the benefits are worth it.”

Another Honor
for Home Health

and DecisionHealth named Olympic
Medical Home Health a Top 100 Home
Health Care Provider yet again. OCS

the country’s foremost sources of home
care information, created the HomeCare

2010 Community Benefit Report
2010 Financial Report to the Community
In
2010, the American people continued to see uncertainty in health care
and in the economy, and they witnessed a historical moment with the
passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – otherwise
known as the health care reform bill. Olympic Medical Center’s administration and
board of commissioners are closely watching health care reform and the economy,
while working diligently to ensure the medical center will be providing safe, high-quality
medical care to the North Olympic Peninsula community for years to come.
Olympic Medical is not immune to the poor economy and is continuing to see
decreased revenue due to inadequate reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid and other
government payers. Bad debt and charity care also continue to grow. The effects of
these challenges are seen in the financials. Yet, through a variety of measures Olympic
Medical is strategically positioning itself for increased financial viability in the years to
come. The medical center will continue to support area initiatives that provide access
to medical care for members of the community, such as the free clinics and the local
VA Clinic, and will continue to focus on improving revenues and decreasing costs.
