Friday 30th January 2015 Friday 30th January 2015 Rushey Mead School Newsletter Together we Make A Positive Difference Year 10 GCSE Art for Holocaust memorial Year 10 Art students have been working on producing pieces of art for an exhibition for Holocaust Memorial Day 2015 at New Walk Museum. The students have researched the stories of survivors of the Holocaust (some had even met survivors at a previous visit to the Holocaust Memorial Centre) and have each produced a piece of art that they feel shares a message on the powerful theme of Holocaust survivors. The students’ work can be seen in an exhibition called ‘Keep the memory Alive’ until 9th February at New Walk Museum. Five students were chosen as Highly Commended Prize Winners and were invited to a commemorative evening hosted by the Leicester HMD Committee at Leicester University where they received their prizes. ITV news were interested in the students’ art work and came to film their Year 10 Art lesson with Miss Woolridge for a piece about Holocaust Memorial Day shown on Central News on 27th January. Highly Commended Harjinder Singh - The judges were impressed by the drama and contrast in this piece. Pedro Cuthill - The sadness so powerfully expressed in Eva’s eyes convinces us that Pedro was very moved by her story. 3rd Prize- Dikshita Meggi - The eyes in this beautiful portrait powerfully express that the subject is haunted by memory. 2nd Prize - Vanisha Chandarana - ‘The Diary of Holocaust Survivors’ - This excellent collage tells of many aspects of the Holocaust very effectively. It has been meticulously and sensitively compiled. 1st Prize - Maya Patel - The judges were struck by the subtle intensity of the work, which powerfully conveys the sense of memory. Through the desperation of the hands, we almost hear the victims’ voices. The clock face suggests to us that time must not allow us to forget them. Display of the week At Rushey Mead we aim to create a stimulating learning environment for students and we wanted to share with you some of the fantastic displays we have around the school. We will regularly showcase faculty displays in our newsletter for you to see. This particular display encourages growth mindset and gives out a powerful message to students about the need to persevere and the need to learn from mistakes. Studio 79 Performance On Wednesday 21st January, dance students from Studio 79 came to Rushey Mead to provide a technical dance workshop for selected students. This evening consisted of a two hour workshop in which students had the opportunity to develop their dance skills and engage in choreographic tasks. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and worked hard to impress the Studio 79 dancers. To showcase their hard work, the students will be choreographing a performance piece based on the workshop which will be performed in the Dance Showcase later this year. Ritik shows New Arrangements for supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and resilience Disabilities Ms Hindocha was pleased to award Ritik, 10BOM, a signed copy of “Shadow of the Minotaur” and a £10 book token from the English department. Ritik completed all the formidable reading tasks in the 10B410 English Summer Challenge Scheme. He is Ms Bastow’s English student and we are proud of his efforts. In September the Department for Education introduced a new Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs and Disability which is to be implemented by schools by April 2015. Below is a link to an open letter from the DfE to parents/carers which explains the changes to arrangements for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/ attachment_data/file/348842/ Parents_letter_Aug_2014_final.pdf Top 10 A2L students—Year 10 Year 8 Cricket success We would like to congratulate these students, who have the 10 most improved Attitude to Learning scores in their year group. The Year 8 boys cricket team took part in the first round of the Leicester School Sport partnership indoor cricket tournament. Following only two training sessions, the team performed incredibly well winning all three games against Madani, Judgemeadow and St Paul’s. The side was well captained by Honey who led by example with some excellent fielding. With the bat, the opening pair of Kunal and Honey ran up impressive totals in every game. The side played with commitment and enthusiasm throughout. The team went on to Crown Hills in the final for a chance to represent East Leicester. Batting first, Rushey scored 86 runs after facing very good bowling from Crown Hills. In the field the team knew their task, to restrict runs and get wickets. Despite an excellent effort from the whole team the Crown Hills batters proved too skilful and they were able to score a game winning total of 97. Moving forward into the summer hard ball season the team have a lot of potential and should be proud of what they have achieved. The full SEND Code of Practice document can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/send-code-ofpractice-0-to-25 . Please contact Ms Eames at the school if you have any questions. If your child would like to purchase them at £2.50 from the school they can do so every Wednesday in A118. The Year 8 boys basketball team have had mixed fortunes following an unbeaten run prior to Christmas. They took part in the Leicester School Sport partnership tournament and despite some excellent performances form Abhay, Craig and Karan they were only able to progress to the semi-final. Despite this disappointment the team bounced back with an emphatic win against Tywcross 27-8. The team shone in their first game playing on the full size court working hard to prevent their opposition scoring. MVP’s were Craig and Abhay. The team’s final two games of the season are against Fulhurst and Lancaster both away. The team will have to train hard and be at their very best in order to win and progress to the play off finals. KS4 Engineering careers talk Students in Key Stage 4 had the opportunity to find out more about pursuing STEM subjects at a higher level, with a particular focus on a career in engineering. We were very fortunate to welcome back Zubair Moti, an ex-student who now works for Jaguar Land Rover as part of the engineering team. Zubair Moti delivered an interactive and engaging presentation to our students. His demonstrations and questions were well received. Students found the talk ‘inspiring and motivating’. They learnt about making the right choices and the importance of immersing themselves in extra-curricular activities to support the academic side of education. We hope to invite more ex-students to share their career pathways with our students to enthuse, encourage and motivate them to pursue STEM subjects. Visit to the Maths Department The Maths department welcomed colleagues from Sir Johnathon North Community College during a Good Practice Visit on Friday 16th January. The visitors commented on how impressed they were with the quality of feedback and response to feedback they observed in Maths at Rushey Mead School. They were also hugely impressed by the calm, supportive atmosphere and positive attitudes to learning of Rushey Mead students. Well done to all who hosted the visit. Attendance is the best in the city ! The local authority has just released attendance figures across Leicester schools for last half term. Once again, we have the BEST attendance in the city at 96.66%. Thank you to all our families for their support in making sure that each child attends school every day. Students from France visit Rushey Mead! This week, 47 students from a school in France (St Chamond, near St Etienne) visited Rushey Mead. Their English pen pals welcomed them on Tuesday morning and showed them around school. They were really impressed by all the facilities available to students here and by the quality of teaching going on in the different lessons. In the afternoon, they learnt how to play Dodgeball and Cricket. When they finally understood the rules, they loved this new sport and didn’t want to stop playing! On the next day, they played some words games, led by our Year 9 students who did a fantastic job at hosting this friendly competition. Finally, they attended a performance of Bollywood dancing by the school club “Bhangra Beats”. They were taught a simple routine by our amazing choreographer Vinay Jobanputra. Both staff and students were delighted by their visit in Rushey Mead and lots of them left exchanged email address to keep in touch. It was a very enriching experience on both side which wouldn’t have been possible without the commitment and sheer enthusiasm of our students and members of staff.
