Current Options for Dual Language Students
• In 2010, the Dual Language Transition Committee recommended creating a
Spanish for Spanish Speakers course that would include more advanced
content and literature while focusing on helping Dual Language students
acquire the grammar and other skills not covered in the Dual Language
Program.
• Current Dual Language students at the middle school level have the option
of taking Spanish for Spanish-Speakers I in 7th grade and Spanish for
Spanish-Speakers II in 8th grade. Both are offered as PreAP courses.
• Students receive high school credit for both of these courses.
Options for 2015-2016
• The 6th-8th Grade Transition Committee studied various options and
determined to offer a content area course in Spanish to 6th grade Dual
Language students.
• Reading was selected as the course to be taught in Spanish because it allows
students to hone their Spanish literacy and vocabulary skills that will support
their success in the Spanish for Spanish-Speakers classes. Students will take
their English course in English to hone English literacy skills.
• This option has the benefit of not reducing electives for the students.

Creative Scheduling Options
1. Credit-by-Exam (CBE)
• Technology Apps I and II – CBE offered May 2, 2015
• Reading – CBE offered June 9-10
Creative Scheduling Options
2.
Summer School (for Tech Apps I and II):
• Location: Fabra Elementary
• Dates: June 9-12, 15-19, 22-26, and 29-July 2
• Time: 8:00 – 11:00; 12:00-3:00 if 2nd class is needed;
• Fee: $110/student with a minimum of 20 students enrolled
Creative Scheduling Options
2.
Off-campus PE
• OCPE credit is for students who are involved with a specific activity that
exceeds what the school district offers through the general physical education
program, such as dance, equestrian, gymnastics, hockey, martial arts, and
swimming.
• Middle school students must be engaged in these activities for at least 5 hours
outside the school day during the week.
• Students must follow guidelines for applying for credit.
Other Considerations
• Parents and students should consider current options at the high school level
for continuing Spanish instruction:
• 9th Grade:
Pre-AP Spanish III or Spanish III
• 10th Grade: AP Spanish IV (Language)
• 11th Grade: AP Spanish V (Literature)
• 12th Grade: Non-Spanish credit through language application, such as PALS
mentoring in an elementary Dual Language classroom
Other Considerations
Begin with the end in mind…
• Does my student want to continue with Spanish throughout high school or
begin another foreign language after AP Spanish IV?
• If a student pursues Spanish at the college level, it is wise not to have a gap in instruction
between high school and college.
• If a student sees potential conflicts in electives at high school which would prohibit taking
Spanish each year, it may be best to skip a year early in the Spanish sequence to ensure that
Spanish is taken the student’s senior year.
