About the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC)
The AOC:

is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the National Olympic
Committee (NOC) for Australia.

has exclusive authority for Australia’s representation at the Olympic Games, Olympic
Winter Games, Youth Olympic Games and the Winter Youth Olympic Games.

is an Incorporated Association (in Victoria) whose members are the National
Federations (NFs) on the Olympic program.

is a not for profit organisation, independent of Government and Government funding
other than contributions by State Governments to the Olympic Team Appeal.

provides program and funding support to its member NFs and their athletes to assist
with the preparation for Olympic and other international competitions. State Olympic
Councils represent the AOC in every State and the ACT.

derives its revenue from income distributions from the Australian Olympic Foundation
(AOF), grants from the IOC, the licensing and sponsorship activities of the AOC and
fundraising by the AOC, State Olympic Councils (SOCs) and their Corporate Appeal
Committees.
Purpose of the Role
The General Manager, Sport is responsible for managing the key aspects of the preparation and
implementation of sending Australian Olympic Teams to summer, winter and youth Olympic
Games. This role primarily manages the support services, operations, administration and medical
aspects of the Team planning with significant responsibility for allocations in the Olympic Village.
Working Relationships
The General Manager, Sport:
 reports directly to the Secretary General.
 attends and contributes to AOC Executive Meetings.
 is a member of the AOC’s Senior Management Group and as such is required to contribute
to the leadership of AOC staff and implementation of AOC policies.
 has 5-13 direct reports (permanent and contractors leading into Games).
 responsibility for the engagement of contract, intern and volunteer staff engaged for
planning on our Teams.
 is the primary contact person for all National Sports Federations (NF’s), and plays
significant role in liaising with key external stakeholders including the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS), Australian Sports Anti Doping Authority (ASADA), AOC Medical
Commission.
Major Responsibilities

Management of the Sport department personnel and their activities in relation to the
Olympic, Olympic Winter, Youth and Winter Youth Olympic Games campaigns, including
but not limited to:
o general project planning, including the development of objectives, goals and broad
strategies against AOC objectives;
o identification and management of resource requirements (personnel, equipment and
services);
o preparation and monitoring of budgets;
o contribution to and preparation of written submissions for consideration by other
members of the Senior Management group, Team Executive and AOC Executive as
required;
o employment and supervision of staff and volunteers employed/secured, including the
creation of a positive work environment and performance management including
training and development of staff;
o creation of an environment that fosters innovation and change.

Management of the Sport department personnel in consultation with National Federations to
deliver on high performance sporting outcomes through the planning and implementation of
the following Games campaign operational areas:

 Assisting an external Director appointed to deliver the medical personnel
appointments, procurement of supplies, medical support services, anti-doping
and recovery services.

In cooperation with the Secretary General, maintain a positive and productive working
relationship with National Federations, Australian Sports Commission, Australian Institute
of Sport, Sport Institute Relations (NESC) and their key personnel.

In cooperation with the Secretary General, Team Executive and AOC Executive drafting and
amending AOC By-Laws, Policies, Guidelines and Agreements from time to time.

In cooperation with the Secretary General, manage the application of AOC membership by
sporting bodies.

At the direction of the Secretary General, assume responsibility for the implementation of
the AOC Anti Doping Policy, including compliance requirements by National Federations
and maintaining a working relationship with ASADA for implementing effective campaigns
to ensure Australian Olympic Teams are drug free.

In consultation with National Federations, manage the AOC’s activities and initiatives
undertaken under the Co-operation Agreements put in place with other NOC’s.

Responsible for the development and implementation of AOC Funding Programs including
regular reporting on the status of Olympic Solidarity, adidas Medal Incentive Funding, NF
Funding and IF Travel Assistance funding programs.

Work with the Media department on the development of press releases, website content,
announcements and information available to media and key stakeholder groups in relation to
Teams and other sport department activities.

Assisting with the development of AOC Policy including the conduct of analysis on results,
funding, selection standards and other performance measures as may be required from time
to time.

Provide administrative and strategic support to the AOC Medical Commission.

Contribution to Senior Management.

The General Manager, Sport will be required to undertake other activities as directed by the
Secretary General from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Qualifications
 Relevant tertiary qualification in business, project management or sport management would be
highly regarded.
Experience
 Strong Project Management methodology & experience.
 Managing budgets and staff.
 Experience managing complex projects, budgets and resources to achieve outcomes.
 Demonstrated ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
 Experience in a high performance sport event environment is highly desirable.

meet job requirements.
Willingness to travel various distances to meet job requirements, including periods of
overseas travel as required.
Must be eligible and available to work in Australia.
