PROGRAM:
PIECES OF LOVE: VALENTINE-INSPIRED COLLAGE
with Guest Artist MELANIE HOPKINS
Collage is a great medium for novices and artists alike. Melanie will demonstrate collage techniques using paper ephemera, photos, found objects, ribbon, image transfers, acrylic paint and
stamping. We will make our one-of-a-kind Valentine-inspired collage on a small wood panel. Glue,
wood panels, acrylic paint and various collage materials will be provided for a $10 materials fee.
Please bring small scissors and/or x-acto knife and cutting mat, a small paintbrush for gluing and
any photos and/or special papers you may wish to incorporate into your design.
Melanie Hopkins began making collages over ten years ago and she is studying collage at the
Barnsdall Art Center. Many of her pieces incorporate various printed languages and cultural
designs. She collects exotic paper, ephemera and found objects. Some images speak to her and
then the hunt begins for other items that “fit” together. She arranges the collected pieces until it
feels right, sometimes ripping them apart and reassembling them, creating visually dynamic hybrids.
Melanie’s professional background is in television, where she was a videotape editor and graphics
designer. As an editor, she would work with provided footage, arranging the shots to illustrate a
story. Collage is like that. She enjoys the challenge of having to use only the objects that are right
in front of her. Like a puzzle, she discovers different pieces that together tell a visual story.

If you received a card or post card from someone commemorating January 23,
2015 as National Handwriting Day, please bring it to the February OCSfC
program. It would be fun to see how many people received cards.
The sign-up sheet for the scholarship for our April 11 and 12 workshop,
COVERING THE PAGE (with Susan Longerot), will be available at the
February 7 OCSfC program. Remember, to sign up for a scholarship, you
must be an Orange County Regional member, you can only sign your name
once on the sheet during an Orange County program, and you must not have
won an Orange County scholarship in two years. The name of the winner will
be drawn at the end of the March 7 program.
If you are not able to attend the four-day Letters California Style Conference
between February 13 and 16, please feel free to join us at the Kellogg West
Conference Center at Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, February 15, for the
Open Class Walk-through between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to see what the
different classes are doing. Paper and Ink Arts will have their store on site
with lots of calligraphy and related items for sale. The SfC Scribe Store will
also be open with lots of wonderful hand-crafted items for sale.
The OCSfC “Clothes Line” Exhibit will have a reception on Sunday, March 8,
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Michael Punke’s Art Space Studio, 17155 Newhope
Street, Suite I (“i”), in Fountain Valley. Please stop by and see all the art that
will be attached with clothes pins “hanging” from several clothes lines. This
will be a fun event. I hope that you will be submitting something for the exhibit
(think small: an artist trading card, a Zentangle tile, an embossed piece, a
gilded letter, a collage, a decorated envelope, a greeting card, a cloth quilted

JANUARY PROGRAM
We had a large turnout for Jane Shibata’s Contemporary Foundational program. After
going over the basic Foundational lower-case alphabet, we experimented with some more
modern alternative letter styles. Jane came around and looked at what everyone was doing and offered suggestions for improving things that were giving us problems. She had a
lot of helpful hints to share.

Michael Punke’s Art Space Studio, 17155 Newhope Street, Suite I (“i”) in Fountain Valley at the following hours: Tuesdays - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m., Thursdays - 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Fridays - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; other
times by appointment (phone Michael Punke at (714) 269-7599). You may also
bring things to Donna Rusher (phone her at (310) 977-2419 or (562) 856-2408.
She lives in Belmont Shore). All submissions are due by Saturday, February 21.

net). Should there be a cancellation, she will contact you.
CALLIGRAPHY IN FILMS: Steve Husting is compiling a list of how western
calligraphy was used in films and television shows in titles, credits or calligraphy
elements on objects. He is posting his findings on his web site at stevehusting.
com/calligraphy. Examples include The Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the
Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, Narnia and the Harry Potter series (addressed
envelopes, potion labels, mystery map, lettering in shop).

CRAFT &
HOBBY SHOW
SfC/OCSfC member, JANET TAKAHASHI, gave
demonstrations for Sakura of America at the 2015
Craft and Hobby Association show in Anaheim on
January 11 to 13. Janet demonstrated Scroll
Flower Booklets, hand lettering and other fun
projects, using Sakura products.
Janet is a published author and a commissioned
illustrator for books, magazines, newspapers and
greeting card companies. She expresses her love
of art through calligraphy, illustration, bookbinding,
sign painting and gilding. She paints everywhere
she goes and especially loves working “en plein air,”
capturing the scenery before her. Janet travels
extensively to teach calligraphy, book arts and
sketchbook journaling workshops.

DONNA RUSHER
OCSfC would like to congratulate Donna Rusher, SfC/OCSfC
member and OCSfC Board Exhibit Chair. Donna retired in
January 2015 after 50 years as a United Airlines Stewardess.
She started her career based in San Francisco, then was
able to transfer her base to Los Angeles. During her career,
she traveled the world, serving millions of travelers during
their working and vacationing flights. United Airlines offered
Donna many opportunities to serve more than just working
with the general public.
While an employee of United Airlines, the United States Air
Force asked United Airlines to work joint charter military
flights during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, as well as U.S. military conflicts in Iraq,
Baghdad and Afghanistan. Donna volunteered for many of these military charter flights.
The United States Air Force awarded Donna the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. This rank would
afford Donna preferential treatment, by the enemy, if the flight was shot down and Donna
was taken as a prisoner of war. There were times when many of these flights had to land
and take off during the darkness of night, without any lights on the runway or on the
airplane. Donna counted it a privilege to serve these military personnel with kindness,
understanding and prayers during dropping off newly deployed men and women, as well
as helping board service men and women to take them home after their service time was
over.
The Department of the Air Force awarded Donna the “Civilian Desert Shield and Desert
Storm Medal” for outstanding achievement protecting the citizens of the United States.
Throughout her employment with United Airlines, Donna treasured being a mother and
grandmother. She also found time to express and further her creative side. Donna is an
accomplished calligrapher, watercolor artist, a certified Zentangle instructor, along with a
lot of other interests.
The Orange County Regional Guild is honored to have Donna as a member of our Board.
Donna has a wonderful OCSfC exhibit arranged for the month of March at the Art Space
Studio in Fountain Valley. OCSfC will host a reception on March 8, 2015, beginning at
1 p.m. We hope that you will submit a piece for the exhibit. Additional exhibit information
is on a previous page of this newsletter.
