The Installer is the official

One piece of legislation has crept in this January
and one very serious debate has been held in
Parliament. The legislation is the CDM – or
Construction Design and Management Regulations.
The other is the charges being imposed by water
companies that might prevent homeowners from
going ahead with extensions including
conservatories and orangeries.
We will have more from you on the implications of the CDM
Regs next month. To summarise, they will no longer exempt
projects that take less than 30 days to complete – so
conservatories can be included. As they require a Project
Manager from the client side, homeowners could find
themselves being made responsible for things such as health &
safety whilst contractors are on their property.
Meanwhile, a debate at the House of Commons on Friday,
16th January, hosted by Mark Pawsey MP, centred on the
costs and restrictions that are being imposed by water
companies. In the past it was the responsibility of private
households to maintain the sewage pipes on their land but
from 1st October 2011 in England and Wales the
responsibility for the majority of sewers was transferred to the
water companies. As a consequence, water companies are
forcing homeowners to seek their agreement when
constructing conservatories or extensions either over a sewer
or within three metres of a sewer.
While the initial idea was to simplify the process, some
homeowners have found that many of the water companies
are taking an excessive amount of time to respond and in
some cases are charging two or three different administrative
fees for granting permission. Quite often these fees can run
into thousands of pounds.
Water companies are being encouraged to adopt an
industrywide code of conduct that outlines best practice for
installing conservatories or extensions in cases where building
work may be close to a sewer, in order to provide clarity for
consumers who wish to extend their homes.

No Go for Zero
Carbon Exemption
The Government appears to have dropped a planned
exemption from the zero carbon policy for Starter
Homes. A consultation document that was released
in December now refers to insisting on a high
quality of build for all properties. It also makes a
commitment to ensure the growth in house building
does not stall - with a plan to earmark land
previously not considered for a massive expansion.
Both pieces of news will be welcomed by the installer
community - more houses means more windows and a
strong emphasis on energy efficiency will be a boon for
those offering energy efficient grades.
The UK Green Building Council has today responded
to a consultation on Starter Homes, in which.
In September of last year, PM David Cameron said
that 100,000 new Starter Homes would be exempt from
a raft of taxes and restri ctions including the zero
carbon homes standard. However, in the recent
consultation there is no mention of the proposed
exemption.
John Alker, Director of Policy and Communications
at the UK Green Building Council, said: “Dropping
the zero carbon exemption for Starter Homes is a
welcome climb-down. It appears someone has
listened to concerns, seen sense and stuck to the
policy for all new homes to be zero carbon from 2016.
We should not have to compromise between the
quantity and quality of new homes in the UK. By
adhering to the zero carbon standard, first time
buyers will enjoy homes that are of a better quality
and with significantly cheaper energy bills.”
Sustainability progress
Meanwhile, the NextGeneration organisation has
marked a decade of sustainability progress for UK
homebuilders. NextGeneration assesses and ranks the
UK’s 25 largest homebuilders on their sustainability
performance. The Berkeley Group claimed the top spot
once again in 2014. Crest Nicholson came in second
with Barratt Developments closely behind in third.
Through the benchmark, homebuilders are assessed
by property consultants JLL on a wide range of criteria
relating to high-quality, sustainable housebuilding and
are given an overall percentage score out of 100. This
year the Berkeley Group achieved a score of 87%, and
Crest Nicholson and Barratt Developments scored 82%
and 81% respectively.
For the first time, NextGeneration has introduced
awards to recognise those companies who have earned
their place as sustainability leaders within the sector.
Seven companies received awards for scoring above 80%
(gold award), 70% (silver award) or 60% (bronze award)
in the benchmark. The Berkeley Group, Crest Nicholson
and Barratt Developments all received gold awards,
Linden Homes a silver award and bronze awards going
to Taylor Wimpey, Countryside and Redrow. i
SYNSEAL SECURES VALUABLE COVERAGE
Synseal has secured valuable coverage in the
national press thanks to a consumer survey report
entitled ‘Mr & Mrs Made It’. The commissioned online
survey was carried out on
behalf of Synseal by
independent research agency
OnePoll and gathered the views
of 2,000 employed homeowner
adults living across the length
and breadth of England,
Scotland and Wales.
The results were thoughtprovoking. Mr and Mrs Made
it live in a house worth 500k,
earn a joint salary of £100k,
have two cars on the driveway
and will be close to paying off
their mortgage. They live in at
least a four bed house, they spend time in the garden which
stretches to 1,000 square feet or more and manage two trips
away a year.
They have a glazed conservatory and frequent shopping
trips in other cities were also listed among the top 50 signs a
couple have really made it in life. They also own an
orangery, have a wet room and regularly shop at Waitrose.
“Although this research was commissioned as a serious
exercise with a statistically robust sample, our consumer PR
agency Cogent Elliott recommended that the results were
published in a fun and upbeat manner and we were
pleasantly surprised when the national daily newspapers
really latched on to the story, both in printed papers and also
online publications” says Mark Schlotel, Head of Marketing at
Synseal. “We were delighted to secure over 50 significant
press cuttings for our Synseal brand in the Times, Independent,
Telegraph, Mail, Mirror, Express, Metro and London Evening
Standard amongst others.” i

AWARDS FOR LONG SERVICE
The VEKA UK Group, the UK arm
of family-owned PVC-U fenestration multinational, The VEKA
Group, has presented employees
with
long-service
awards
constituting over 450 years' loyal
service.
The awards were presented at
both the Group's Burnley HQ and
its facility in Minworth. The Burnley
site was visited earlier in the year by
Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP
who opened its £5m state-of-the-art
mixing plant, praising the company
for its part in the town’s positive
success story.
Recognising 31 employees in total,
the awards presented ranged from
five years’ service through to a
staggering 25 years each for
Burnley’s Stewart Berry and Pat
Parry, Production Unit Leader and
Head of Logistics respectively, and
Edward
Weller,
Production
Operative from Bowater Doors in
Minworth.
The German brand was introduced into the UK in 1986,
originally known as VEKA plc
before, on its 25th anniversary,
rebranding as The VEKA UK Group
to reflect its acquisition of Bowater
Building Projects.
MD Dave Jones was also one of
those presented with an award,
having been with the company for
over 20 years. He commented: “I'm
proud to have played my part in the
The VEKA UK Group’s growth over
the past two decades. There are
people here who go back even
further than me that remember an
initial staff of just 30 working in a
comparatively humble factory of
around 30,000 square feet.
“The fact that those employees
are still with us, and a host of
others who have shown their
loyalty over several years is
testament to both VEKA's fair
treatment of its staff and a tangible
sense of family throughout the
company. Our success is largely
thanks to their pride in their
work and I congratulate them for
it.” i
Mark Wadsworth – appointed MD
at Senior Architectural Systems
Senior Architectural Systems has
appointed a new MD – Mark
Wadsworth. He replaces Lennart
Jonsson who founded the company in
1991, as he takes up his new role as
chairman of the board.
Mark joined the company in 1993 as a
one-year placement student and climbed
through the ranks to become operations
director in 2007.
“I am honoured to have been
appointed as MD,” comments Mark. “I
am extremely proud of all that Senior has
achieved and excited to be heading up
the company at a time when we are
launching a range of innovative
products which are set to revolutionise
the fenestration market.”
Says Lennart: “The whole company is
behind Mark as he takes up his new
position as managing director and I
would like to join with them in wishing
him every success in his new role.” i
2015 marks the 40th year in business for one of
the South West's largest manufacturers of VEKA
PVC-U doors, windows and conservatories.
West-End Windows, based in Bristol, was started by
Bill Carr in 1975, initially dealing solely in aluminium
window systems before the trend for PVC-U lead it to
diversify in 1979.
Today, West-End Windows' PVC-U division is proud to
fabricate systems from The VEKA UK Group, offering a
full range from residential, French and Bi-Folding doors
to Vertical Sliding and versatile Tilt and Turn windows –
a revolutionary solution for those with hard-to-clean
upper-floor windows.
West-End Windows plans to celebrate its anniversary
year with a raft of exciting projects including a brandnew website, 'going live' soon at www.westendwindows.co.uk i

EMPLOYEES AWARDED
Quickslide‘s Chairman Adrian Barraclough climbed
onto the stage with a handful of colleagues at the
recent G Awards to collect the winner’s trophy for
the Best Training & Development Initiative.
But his joy was tempered by not being able to share the
moment with the whole workforce.
Adrian therefore set out to correct that by staging his own reenactment of the ceremony for the G Awards, presenting
everyone at Quickslide’s Brighouse factory with their own mini ‘G
Award’, to recognise their crucial part in the company’s success.
Quickslide’s entry was based upon the company recognising
a number of negative issues in its World Class Manufacturing
System – similar to that used at Toyota – and creating training
strategies to correct them. As a result Quickslide has enjoyed
annual cost benefits in excess of £500,000 and more
importantly, says Adrian, empowerment of its employees. i
Liniar was named Systems Company of 2014 at
the National Fenestration Awards in December.
Liniar also secured runner up in the PVC Company and
Social Networker categories.
These latest accolades follow on from a spate of recent
honours that the Derbyshire brand has earned with Liniar’s
trading company HL Plastics winning the Growing Business
of the Year 2014 for mid-sized companies at the esteemed
GBA national business awards in November.
That came hot on the heels of Liniar creator and MD Roger
Hartshorn being announced as one of the UK’s most
influential individuals in manufacturing in The Manufacturer
Top 100 list. A panel of expert judges from within the
industry selected the individuals who characterise those
important traits that help support and develop UK
manufacturing. The HL team also took home the Derby
Telegraph Company of the Year award in June.
The National Fenestration Awards are the industry’s
fastest growing independent awards event. Launched in
2013 they aim to reward the very best of the sector and are
run and decided completely by the participation of the
industry. i

Firstly to all our members, an

Future’s Orangeries
Gareth Thomas of Atlas Glazed Roof Solutions talks about the company’s success in
aluminium conservatory and lantern roofs and the launch of its new Skyroom – a mock
orangery in a modern style that is receiving admiring response from the market
I
t’s been a tremendously exciting time at Atlas with demand
rapidly growing for our contemporary conservatory and
lantern roofs. Installers have
discovered that there is no
other roof quite like the Atlas roof
on the market, with its signature
aesthetics really making it stand
out from the crowd.
There has been a definite shift
within the conservatory market
as homeowners demand more
contemporary styled extensions,
with slimmer profiles and more
glazing in the roof to make a dramatic design statement. These
discerning customers appreciate
the aesthetics that our roof offers
when compared to its more bulky
PVC-u counterparts, especially it’s large expanses of glass, whilst
hidden or rafter tie bar supports on the outside a unique 300mm

strong design statement. It carries

the hallmark of a premium prodThe Skyroom has landed!
The latest product to join the Atlas
family is the new ‘Skyroom’.
Available now, this product is a
truly exciting advance in orangery design. Designed to cleverly bridge the gap between an
economically priced conservatory and a high end Orangery,
the Skyroom boasts the same credentials as the Atlas roof; slimline
technology, outstanding thermal
performance and stylish design.
Its unique raised ring beam creates the luxurious appearance of
an Orangery lantern rather than
a standard conservatory.
Internally, the Skyroom combines a subtle roof frame with

glass, the Atlas glazed aluminium
roof solution satisfies this demand. Slimmer, stronger and
more thermally efficient than
many of the other roof systems on
the market, its appearance and
performance is unsurpassed.
The roof has been carefully designed to create a sleek appear-
ance whilst maximising the views
above. It eliminates the need for
boss and hood fittings and features a slimline ridge, which is
70% thinner than the competition, and 40mm aluminium box
rafters, which are 30% slimmer
than any other rafter.
Externally, the low sightlines of
the Atlas roof ensure that it looks
as good from the outside as it
does on the inside. Aesthetics are
not however at the expense of
performance and the roof is still
one of the UK’s strongest and
most thermally efficient conservatory and lantern roof systems
available.
Thinner and lighter than its rivals, our range of standard and
contemporary roof lanterns maximises the sense of light and
space in any setting. When double glazed, our roof lantern
rafters and ridge are over 100%
more thermally efficient than
other roof systems available on
the market. And when triple
glazed with 44mm units, the
lantern can achieve an impressive U Value of 0.7 W/m2k.
Every Atlas roof is manufactured in our purpose built factory
in Gloucester and plans are in
place to expand our production
capabilities. Our roofs are available in all RAL colours with lead
times on orders of between two
and three weeks for white, grey
and black roofs. Our four most
popular styles of roof lanterns are
held in stock in white, grey,
black, grey on white and black
on white and in a number of different sizes. The lead time is just
five days, which is perfect for
builders who are always keen to
avoid costly delays in their construction schedules. i

Conservatories
Raising the Roof
on Conservatory
Improvement
Over 4 million conservatories have been built in the UK over
the last 30 years, many of which are past their best and
need refurbishing or replacing. Ultraframe has carried out
significant research that shows that up to 33% of
consumers looking for a conservatory roof replacement
would consider a solid roof. Steve McIntyre sheds some
light on this growing market
T
he market for conservatories
in the UK peaked in 2006 at
just under 240,000 units with a
retail value of £1.8bn. But the
decline in conservatory sales
started well before the start of
the 2008 recession suggesting
that the popularity of the conservatory had begun to wane. We
know through our own research
amongst home improvers that
the single biggest objection to
conservatory ownership is the
perceived lack of temperature
control – while it’s broadly accepted that a conservatory is a
cost effective and hassle free
way to add single storey living
space to a home – as the market leader in conservatory roof
systems we’ve worked incredibly hard to provide our network
partners with a broad range of
systems to enable them to sell
the thermal efficiency of an Ultraframe solution.
But that’s only half the story.
Fast forward to 2014, eight years
on from the peak of conservatory
sales and a significant and sizable market opportunity has
emerged. The proportion of replacement conservatories has almost doubled in the last four years
to almost 20% of the overall mar-
16 | Conservatories|The Installer
ket. The statistics show that the
trend for replacement conservatories is in fact a new market phenomenon already underway.
It is conceivable that over the
next ten years 50% of the existing stock of 4 million conservatories would require refurbishment
or replacement. But the challenge for any manufacturer entering this market is to be able to
deliver a replacement roof system
that far surpasses the existing
roof in terms of aesthetics and
thermal performance.
Why
would a homeowner go to the
trouble of replacing a roof to end
up with something that compromises on aesthetics and thermal
performance? Which is why
we’ve talked to thousands of conservatory owners about what
they want out of a replacement
roof. It’s interesting that for a lot
of homeowners the opportunity
to turn a highly glazed space into
a cosy room that feels like an extension of their existing living
space is one of the overwhelming desires. But equally with this
desire comes the concern that by
adding a solid roof to the conservatory the back of the property will become too dark - it’s a
fair point and one that we have
addressed in our development of
LivinROOF.
As with every roof system we
develop at Ultraframe the needs
of the retailer and the installer remain central to our roof development programme. LivinROOF is
the ultimate roof replacement system. From the homeowners perspective
the
modern,
contemporary aesthetics are a
far cry from any other roof system in this market, add to that the
limitless design options incorporating flexible, glazed sections at
no extra cost, LivinROOF is
packed full of features that create
the ultimate, vaulted roof space.
But we also recognise that the retailer needs to be able to confidently sell and install LivinROOF
in every type of roof situation so
we’re first to market with a roof
that can be installed in less than
10 hours and can easily replace
lean-to roofs that are as little as a
five degree pitch.
Without question, the replacement roof market is incredibly dynamic, all it’s needed is the
perfect solution. We believe we
have delivered it in LivinROOF. i

Rise of the Flat
Roof Dome
L
B Roof Windows has seen
a major increase in demand for flat roof domes
in the domestic sector.
Sales director Adrian
Cooper says part of this increase in demand is down to
technological advances in weatherproofing for flat roofs.
The days when flat roofs were
scaring people off with problems
such as leaking and heat loss are
long gone. Flat roof systems now
come with life time guarantees,
making them an attractive and
modern option for homeowners
having an extension built.
Adrian comments: “As the popularity of flat roofs grows we are
seeing an increase in installations of flat roof domes. Although
they have a reputation for being
a commercial only product for
use in projects such as schools
and hospitals, home improve-
ment TV shows have
featured attractive
home extensions
with roof domes fitted on flat roofs, stirring up desire from
homeowners for
similar living
areas.”
Adrian believes
recent financial turmoil is another contributing factor to
this trend. With new
and larger mortgage loans more
difficult to obtain,
homeowners are
choosing to improve
not move, investing
in home improvements such as
flat roof extensions to increase
space and add value to their
home.
This is opening up opportunities
for flat roof domes in the domestic market, and LB Roof Windows
is helping installers and builders
take advantage of this. i
lbroofwindows.co.uk
Lightweight solid roof systems for conservatories
have gained substantial momentum since being
introduced on the market a few years ago as the
answer to all problems associated with conservatories.
Their popularity has opened up a series of opportunities for
builders and installers to further increase their margins by offering additional related products, such as Roof Windows.
With their promise to deliver all year-round usability of the
conservatory, solid roof systems have achieved strong commercial success both in the replacement market, as well as
the new build sector. The last couple of years have proved
these systems live up to the expectations, creating a new
market for additional products along the way.
LB Roof Windows is a leading supplier of Velux, Dakea and
Aurora Roof Windows manufactured by the reputable international VKR Group. The company also supplies conservatory roof accessories including tie bars and tie wires, roof
vent accessories, flat roof domes, as well as many other related products. i

Doors is what happened when a fire crew
needed to enter a home in a hurry. Having
been called to this smoke-filled Derbyshire
home following a 999 call and on getting no
response from the occupants, they had to cut through the
door using a saw to gain access.
Fortunately no one was in at the time, but the house

fire crew cut a hole to gain entry
“Thankfully no one was hurt in this incident, but it certainly demonstrated the strength and quality of our door, not to mention the quality of the handle and
hinges,” commented Haydon Statham, Sale Director of Phoenix Doors, part of the MASCO UK Window Group Ltd.
“We use current up-to-date materials in the construction of our doors, such as a 3mm thick throughcolour GRP skin wrapped around the sub-frame. This makes them very robust. A door is only as
strong as the sum of its parts and in this instance, the door performed to the highest standards we expect. Not only that, its foam core has the added benefit of being very thermally-efficient compared to
alternatives on the market today,” added Haydon.
Wayne Cooper, Managing Director of Derbyshire-based U Value Ltd, said: “We’d only installed this
exceptionally-strong door six weeks earlier. Sledgehammers didn’t touch it, so in an emergency, the
only way in for the fire team was to cut out a big hole and step through.”
A former full-time firefighter for 28 years before setting up his company, Wayne added: “I’ve had to
break through many doors in the past during my old job, but in this instance, it took a lot longer!” i

ecord-breaking sales
of its GRP composite
doors and PVC-U door
panels have been reported by Phoenix
Doors in the final
quarter of 2014. Sales in October were the highest recorded
in the firm’s 21-year history.
The Cambridgeshire-based
manufacturer regularly produces more than 600 composite
doors per week with door panel
production averaging around
1,350 per week. Demand for
panels continues to hold steady,
according to Haydon Statham,
Sales Director of Phoenix Doors.
He comments: “November
2014 was not as high a figure
as October because it
was three working days
shorter. But incoming orders on a daily basis
were actually higher than
in October.
“October 2014 has broken all records with the
biggest-ever sales figures
for one month in the company’s history. It’s fair to
say it’s been our best run-up to
Christmas and these record
sales levels, naturally, have
been matched by record production performance. Our employees in both composite and
panel production deserve the utmost praise for their hard work
in helping to make this happen.
He points out that recent investment by the Group in the form
of new plant and equipment
has also contributed to this success, with further expenditure
planned throughout 2015 – including a new paint line in the
New Year. i

Composite
Hinge as part of a se- choice of a broad palette of
ries of improvements to the spec- colours, glass options and matching hardware.
The range is now supplied
with an upgraded door lock
and modified adjustable
hinge along with a fullysuited range of hardware.
Total offers the Trojan hinge
in a choice of white and
brown finishes.
Marketing Manager Phill
Cresswell explains: “The butt
hinge allows for full 3D adjustment in all planes, and its
additional strength will re-
duce the need for future remedial
visits to adjust a dropped door
slab – the new hinge has certainly made our composite door
a true ‘fit and forget’ door for our
customers”
He added: “The fact that the
hinge is also more aestheticallypleasing as it fits into the rebate
to give an unobtrusive finish is
just an added bonus.”
Trojan’s Group Managing Director Tony Chadwick comments
“Our hinge was specially designed for composite doors to reflect the unique requirements of a
hinge for this type of door, ensuring years of trouble-free operation.” i

Sliding Door Tests in Portugal
W
armCore aluminium folding
sliding door system has been
undergoing extended extreme weather testing
in Portugal along with structural
strength and enhanced security
testing.
A 5-sash WarmCore unit was installed
in
an
outdoor location in
Lisbon, Portugal
back in July ’14
and this continental climate exposure
testing
programme will
continue
indefinitely.
Late summer test
results in September ’14 recorded
an ambient temperature of 40oC
22 | Doors|The Installer
immediately adjacent to the test
rig and an external aluminium
frame temperature of 71oC, the
severity of which surprised the
Synseal test engineers. The
WarmCore folding sliding door
continued to function perfectly
with dimensional stability of sash
and frames unaffected by these
extreme temperatures, which will
certainly far exceed any warm
weather climate conditions experienced in the UK.
Meanwhile in UKAS laboratory testing, a 4-3-1 configuration WarmCore folding sliding
door was subjected to a full
PAS24:2012
testing
programme. The mechanical load test
calls for the unit to
withstand a loading
of 4.5kN for 10
seconds, which was
easily
achieved.
The
WarmCore
door then went on
to withstand more
than 9.1kN, representing a loading
approaching
1
tonne on a single
point of application. i synseal.com

SFS
intec's Dynamic hinge range
for its high performance and
colour matching properties.
Paul McCarthy, Sales Director at Profile Systems comments: "Through matching
the hinge colour to the
frame, it allows for bespoke,
aesthetically pleasing designs that meet customers specific requirements. Similarly, the
hinge's strong vertical profile
means that fewer are required
for installation; this is a key differentiator which will put us
ahead of our competitors.”
Irish fabricators often use four
hinges, even on double glazed

doors. However, with the additional load carrying ability of the
Dynamic hinge from SFS intec,
only three fixing points are required to guarantee strength and
performance, even with triple
glazed doors. The centre pin design provides superior strength
with its vertical profile so there is
no chance of the hinge dropping
or sagging, saving both installation time and additional
costs.
SFS intec also supplied detailed product training to the
Profile Systems staff, who in
turn have been able to pass on
the knowledge, aiding business development.
Nigel Wood, Business Development Manager at SFS
intec comments: "We are
thrilled to be expanding our
Dynamic hinge range to the
Irish market, especially through
an expert distributor such as Profile Systems. We are proud to
offer the unique colour options
as we know the choice of hinge
makes a significant difference to
the overall quality and appearance of the completed doorset installation." i

Art College Refurb
Senior Architectural Systems has installed high specification curtain
wall and window systems at the Edinburgh College of Art’s Hunter
Building.
Senior’s SMR900 curtain wall systems and SPW600e window .systems were
installed by Gardiner Window Services. The robust, tubular aluminium SMR900
system was installed on one elevation of the building to flood the interior with natural
light and to ensure a modern, open feel was maintained for the building’s users.
SMR900 is a stick system which is zone-drained and pressure equalized and offers
a slim 50mm sightline, with a standard choice of six mullion and six transom depths.
The system is capable of being fabricated into ladders for quick assembly on site,
which is beneficial to all involved in a project, including fabricators and installers. It is
alsofully-recyclable aluminium which ensures the systems are a sustainable option for
architects. The SPW600e window systems, meanwhile, were installed across four
levels, to upgrade the building and improve the thermal performance. SPW600e is
a three chamber, 75mm polyamide thermally enhanced aluminium window system
which is available in various configurations. i seniorarchitectural.co.uk
Multi-chambered
options for outer and
sash frame profiles
are now available for
all three of Synseal’s
70mm PVC-U window
systems – Legend, Shield
and SynerJy. These new
frame profile configurations are thermally efficient
and can achieve A-rated
WERs when glazed with
28mm DG units without the
need for Low Iron glass.
“We always listen to our
fabricator partners and
further development of our proven Shield and SynerJy systems was
a logical step to take,” comments Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products
& Customer Service Director. Our new multi-chambered solutions
deliver excellent U-values and do not require reinforcement and this
specification is our very latest 3rd generation systems offering. All
these different technical approaches have merit and we are happy
to support whatever profile specifications our fabr icator partners
wish to champion.” i synseal.co.uk
Swisspacer has produced an animated video for
installers to use on sales pitches, and tells homeowners everything they need to know about energy saving and the benefits of warm edge and
Swisspacer.
The video explains how windows with Swisspacer inside
make the home more energy efficient to cut heating bills. All
Swisspacer spacer bars have a High Tech Gas Barrier to preserve the lifespan of windows and ensure they continue to
save money.
Swisspacer Marketing & Sales Manager, Vic De Costa
says: “Our new animated video is a great selling tool for
installers. Warm edge technology can be complicated to
explain, but Swisspacer ’s video
makes it easy,
spelling out the
benefits to homeowners – lower
heating bills and a
more comfortable
home – in a fun and

Halo fabricator Listers Trade Frames signed up 12 installers to the Halo Approved
Installer Scheme at their open day in December. The VEKA UK Group's Installer
Scheme National Sales Manager Amy Grundy (pictured with one of Listers trade
customers, Paul Wiggins.)explains: “The advantages of the Approved Installer
Scheme apply to both fabricators and installers. Members benefit from exclusive,
customisable marketing materials which enable the company's branding to
appear prominently, supported by the 'Approved' logo. The online Marketing
Hub even allows companies to change images to create a brochure that best represents them and their work.
Listers MD Mark Warren adds “we were delighted to welcome so many people to our open day. It allowed us to showcase our full product range and show
installer customers the benefits of our new systems, such as the expanded range
of Composite Doors, the new Imagine PVC-U Bi-Fold, our timeless FlushSash window and fantastic new Imagine Flush French Patio Doors. i vekauk.com

Greener and Leaner
Van users should not shy away from sustainability challenges,
according to The Fuelcard People. Group marketing manager Steve Clarke
comments: “Being greener is not as tough as some might think. The easiest place to start
is with monitoring and managing emissions.”
He said that some emissions management actions have to be long-term measures, such
as vehicle procurement strategies. Others can be carried out in the medium term, such as
rigorous service scheduling and preventative maintenance.
Van users can monitor emissions, vehicle by vehicle, across the whole fleet by using
CO2Count. This service is available to any customer of The Fuelcard People and offers a
fleetwide emissions analysis alongside every routine invoice. For a nominal sum, firms can
track CO2, NOx and CH4 emissions.
“Some emissions reduction measures can be implemented immediately,” continues Steve. “These include training personnel in
economical driving techniques and offering incentives for lower individual fuel consumptions. Even checking tyre pressures can
help, as driving with incorrectly inflated tyres increases consumption and emissions. The most important action is to begin with
measuring. If you do not know how high your emissions are, you can hardly know if you are reducing them.” i
fuelcardpeople.co.uk
Aesthetically pleasing, high performing, and with a heritage dating back to the 1920s, steel windows are strong and durable and,
with their slender glazing bars
and characteristically large areas
of glass, can be expected to last
the life of the building, if properly
maintained.
Modern steel windows made by Steel
Window Association Members are doubleglazed, thermally-efficient and benefit from
good security, durability and ease of maintenance. The steel frames are generally hotdip galvanized and have a high quality, factory-applied, polyester powder coat finish to
ensure they remain rust-free and will not need
to be painted for at least twenty years.
Older windows did not have the same
protection as those made today but huge
numbers are still in use thanks to regular
care and maintenance. Should the need
arise, they can be overhauled on site or in
the workshop by Steel Window Association members. Such work may range from
basic ‘ease and adjusting', so that
they open and close better, to full refurbishment.
Steel windows, like any other building
element, should be checked at regular
intervals. Simple measures include always
having the metal frame surfaces of windows washed down at the same time as
the glass is cleaned, and undertaking an
annual inspection of weatherseals, joint
sealants and working parts. Light lubrication of hinges, pivots, handles, stays and
catches will ensure they stay in good
working order. This small investment in
maintenance will do much to ensure the
trouble-free performance and long life of
steel windows. i
steel-window-association.co.uk
Edgetech has made it even easier for glass manufacturers to make better IGUs with the launch of top quality TruSieve 3A molecular sieve desiccant.
TruSieve desiccant has a high humidity adsorption capacity to deliver
long term performance within the insulated glass unit. To see just how
good TruSieve is, the British Standards Institute was commissioned to
carry out comparison tests against desiccant from leading suppliers. The
test results showed the initial moisture content of TruSieve is as much as
38 percent better and moisture adsorption capacity is up to 18 percent
greater. This makes TruSieve one of the most stable spacer bar desiccants on the market.
Edgetech already supplies a range of component products to make
glass units more efficiently. They include Super Spacer and TruPlas
warm edge spacer systems, TruPlas SDL and Bostik Hotmelt sealant. i

New Features Added to Blind Range
Over the last 12 months Morley Glass & Glazing has added a number of features to its existing range of Uni-Blinds – which all feature
ScreenLine blind systems inside.
The whole site features a fresh new look as well as containing new pages about
the new Uni-Blinds cordless sliding system (SL20SV), which features a magnetic
slider on the face of window to control the blinds and has attracted strong interest
since it was launched in the Autumn.
All the technical details have been brought up to date to reflect advancements
such as the addition of a warm edge spacer bar for all Uni-Blinds units as standard,
and the extensive stock of ScreenLine spares – with most parts available for next
day delivery.
Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass says: “Sales of Uni-Blinds have boomed in the
last 12 months as installers seek short lead times and a marketing advantage by
demanding quality integral blinds that won’t give them the headaches of future callbacks. i morleyglass.co.uk
The VEKA UK Group has unveiled
what they claim to be the industry's only BSI notified and BFRC
certified window and door energy performance calculator.
Principal Engineer Tim Williams
explains: “As of September 1st 2014,
changes in BFRC rules, brought about by
updated European standards meant that
ALL previous energy rating calculators
immediately became invalid. This affects
all sorts of things down the chain, including CE Marking.
“CE Marking is a legal requirement for
windows and doors and making false
declarations about U-Values may lead to
prosecution for fraud! I would estimate
that currently, less than 40% of the industry are fully covered by every aspect of
CE Marking.
“Our new calculator is now the only
'intelligent’ one in the industry. It is the
culmination of more than a year's work,
to ensure that when the September
changes were introduced – our cus-
tomers would have the tools to stay on
the right side of the law.
“The new calculator has been officially notified by the BSI for CE Marking and we've designed it to provide
CE Marking U-Values in accordance
with BS EN 14351 for all the major
VEKA UK Group products, and all the
variations thereof.
“It offers HUGE cost savings, as it can
be used as many times as you like, completely FREE of charge! This will eliminate the cost currently associated with
auditing or notifying each window or
door configuration.
“Extremely simple to use, the system
allows one form to be filled in via numerous drop down boxes that allow fabricators to try all the available configurations, with different glass, spacer bars
etc. It is impossible to get a 'wrong' result
as only compatible parts will be listed for
each system. “Customers could even
potentially save money on the cost of
manufacturing their standard 'A' rated
windows by
trying a different
variety of cost-effective components that still result in the 'A'
they require.
“We have designed the calculator to
be 'future proof' as it can accommodate
changes, for example, if the Building
Regs go from 1.6 down to 1.4.
“The calculator will be sent out to our customers manually in the first instance, but
ultimately the plan is for it to be hosted on
the website and customers can log in to
access
their
bespoke
version.”
