Experts from Birmingham City University have criticised the Government’s
proposals to build on brownfield sites thousands of new homes which
would be exempt from the zero carbon homes standard and other taxes,
claiming this is ‘a short-sighted approach that misses a major opportunity
to reduce significantly the carbon emissions of much-needed new homes’.
Professor Keith Osman, Director of Research at Birmingham City
University, is urging the Government to look longer term and use a more
integrated strategy in future planning, an approach currently being
pioneered by a pan-European consortium led by the University.
“Ignoring climate change and easing regulations to reduce construction
costs in the short term is a false economy for planners when planning to
build new homes on this scale. The use of analytic tools demonstrates
clearly that reductions in energy usage, which reduces both CO 2
emissions and energy costs for the occupants, can always be achieved
and should a compulsory requirement for all new build housing.
“The KIC-Transitions (KIC-T) project brings together data, modelling and
visualisation tools to provide a comprehensive simulation framework that
will assist strategic planning. This integrated platform enables ‘plug-in’ to
a wide range of information sets for analysis of key environmental
impacts, including energy needs, noise pollution or carbon emissions.
This highlights just how important our project will be in helping planners
to better assess the impact such ambitious proposals will have when built
without due enforcement of regulations that minimise environmental
impact.”
Although not citing them clearly, Professor Osman must be aware of the
impact good quality windows can play in all the factors he lists. The
Installer magazine applauds his view.
Professor Osman said the enhanced modelling capability being
developed through KIC-T will allow planners, designers, local authorities
and house-dwellers to better understand the full implications of planning
decisions.
“KIC-T is defining standards and software to allow data, models and
visualisation tools to be readily plugged together, allowing more
comprehensive models to be created which can be applied to all building
projects around the world,” said Professor Osman.
Dave Taylor, KIC-T Project Manager, said: “KIC-T has a real opportunity
to make a significant contribution to modelling and visualising building
and construction plans and demonstrates the commitment that
Birmingham City University has to the wider sustainability and climate
change agenda.”
The Climate-KIC is Europe’s largest public-private innovation partnership,
working together to address the challenge of climate change. The ClimateKIC is funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology
which has a wider mission to increase European sustainable growth and
competitiveness by reinforcing the innovation capacity of the EU.

UK Tradespeople
Most Likely to Train
“Today’s UK tradespeople are more likely to ensure
that they continue to develop their occupational
skills than the general population, according to the
findings of a major survey that explodes many of the
traditional stereotypes of White Van Men.
A poll of more than 10,000 tradespeople by the UK’s
biggest online and mail order supplier of ironmongery
products to the trade, IronmongeryDirect, reveals that
13 per cent of UK tradespeople are currently undertaking training compared to just 10 per cent of the
population as a whole. The study also found that 58 per
cent of tradespeople have professional qualifications
related to their work compared to 20 per cent of the
general population. The survey canvassed opinion from
workers in a range of professions, including carpenters,
builders, window installers, plumbers and
electricians.
Misconception
Moreover, it would appear that the public perception of
White Van Men as lacking in basic training is a real sore
point for many tradespeople. Approximately 67 per cent
described themselves as ‘highly trained and skilled’,
while only 11 per cent agreed that it is generally true
that real-life tradespeople are ‘poorly educated and
trained’.
The research also sheds light on how happy they are
in their chosen job. When asked ‘On a scale from 1 to 10
how much do you love your job?’ – with 10 being the
most in favour, the most common response from
tradespeople was an impressive 8 out of 10. And in
response to the question ‘Which of the following best
describes your earnings?’ – an overwhelming 93 per cent
said either it’s boom time, things are going well, I'm
comfortable or I get by – leaving just 7 per cent saying
it’s a bit of a struggle. Lastly, the three most popular
answers to the question ‘What aspects of the job do you
enjoy the most?’ were ‘Pride from good workmanship
and a job well done’ (86 per cent), ‘Everyday is different’
(65 per cent) and ‘Flexibility to manage own workload
and hours’ (56 per cent).
Continuously Improving Skills
Wayne Lysaght-Mason, MD at IronmongeryDirect, says:
“Our research shows that the myth of tradespeople as
poorly educated, low-skilled and badly trained is well
wide of the mark.
“Instead, it’s highly common for tradespeople to
undertake further training courses to ensure that they
are continuously improving their skills and able to
deliver an excellent service to their customers. These
well-educated individuals are choosing a career in the
trades because it offers them high levels of job
satisfaction, strong earnings potential and the flexibility
that comes with being in charge of your own
business.” i
ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY
WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS
More than 200 people attended
Network VEKA’s Black Tie Gala

The organisation welcomed eight new
member companies to the event.
The evening was hosted by Network
VEKA’s Brand Ambassador Steve Davis.
It began with a champagne reception
followed by an audience with the sixtimes World Snooker Champion, who
answered questions from the audience
about his snooker career and his time in
the ‘I’m a Celebrity’ Jungle.
Network VEKA MD John Ogilvie was
on hand to announce the evening’s
award winners. Regional winners are

16,000 households across
Britain and Ireland – every

Ogilvie says: “It’s always a
pleasure to see member
companies stand up to receive their
awards. The standards we set for our
membership are very high so it means the
award winners have beaten the best of
the best to claim their trophy. They should
all be very proud of themselves!

BACK IN THE FINALS
Solidor has followed up its G13 Award for Promotional
Campaign of the Year – Retail as a finalist in the same category
at the G14 Awards.
Since the award of G13 Promotional Campaign of the Year
– Retail, the campaign has in fact been even more impressive
with website traffic up 79%, retail enquiries up 48% and 13
keywords now in the top 5 on Google. During the last 12
months the company has also launched the industry’s first
augmented reality (AR) app alongside the existing Door
Designer app and a new online Design a Door facility on the
website which in the first 10 weeks saw 4,659 door designs
created.
A new Solidor TV channel has also been launched, along with
a YouTube channel, which includes a number of new videos
showing the 7 step journey from enquiry through to installation,
while other videos highlight the key difference in a solid
hardwood core composite door vs a foam filled GRP door.
There are now also 452 Recommended and Premium installers
in their network, up 21% on the previous year. i
Rehau fabricator Polyframe has been nominated
for The Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business
Awards 2014.
The company has been selected from all businesses in
Yorkshire as one of just three finalists in the ‘Companies
between £10m and £50m’ category, recognising its growth
over recent years. The newspaper’s high profile awards are
designed to highlight the strength of the region’s business
community and, as the organisers say, to ‘show that the
spirit of enterprise is alive and well in God’s Own Country’.
One of the key factors in Polyframe’s nomination this year
is the recent opening of its fifth factory in Halifax which will
create around 300 jobs in the Yorkshire town. It has also
been recognised for the success of both its dedicated
composite door factory, which opened in Mansfield in 2013
and its Northern Ireland factory in Portadown, which is
successfully targeting the trade markets across Ireland and
Scotland.
The winners of the
Yorkshire Post awards will
be
announced
at
a
ceremony to be held in Leeds
on October 30. It will be
hosted by BBC journalist
Justin Webb and the keynote
speaker will be Secretary of
State for Work and Pensions,

Solidor came away from Grand Designs Live 2014 at
the Birmingham NEC with a number of qualified leads.
The event was packed with over 500 exhibitors across six
different sections, covering interiors, gardens, food and
housewares, kitchens and bathrooms, home improvement, selfbuild, renovations, technology and shopping. This was the
second year that Solidor exhibited at the show with interest
again high in their second generation composite doors.
This year the show was extended by a further day to cope with
demand from visitors and it’s been estimated that around
60,000 visitors came to the show, up 10,000 on the 2013
official figures. Over the course of the 4 days, approximately
200 qualified leads were taken by Solidor, taking into
consideration the use of their web-based Door Designer
software on four iPads that were on display and also the fact
that consumers looking to create their own door, harnessed this
technology after the event. i

Edgetech has been at the forefront of top energy
efficient windows for 25 years, and this year it’s
expanded its product range for companies looking
for ways to enhance their glazing or installation
offering. Already this year, Edgetech has added TruPlas and
TruPlas SDL to its ever expanding product portfolio, and now
there are four more products creating new opportunities for
IGU manufacturers, fabricators and installers.
At its product launch in Manchester on 8 October, Edgetech
showed guests the new additions Super Spacer Alpha, TruFit,
TruSieve and TruShield.
“These new products are designed to support customers and
dealers, enabling them to differentiate themselves with next
generation, high performance products,” said Andy Jones,
Managing Director of Edgetech UK.
At the launch official thermal test results for its new foam
spacer were revealed as 0.13W/m2K, making Super Spacer
Alpha the best performing warm edge spacer in the world.
Edgetech also launched TruFit, warm edge for windows. It’s
an expanding tape that perfectly seals around the frame to the
brickwork making the complete installation energy efficient and
weathertight. So much of the UK’s housing stock is older and
it’s difficult to get a good fit all round. TruFit reduces heat loss
by up to 23 percent at the edge of the frame and saves up to
20 percent fitting time making it cost effective for both
homeowner and installer.
During the presentation there was a live demonstration to
show how fast, easy and clean TruFit is to install.
TruSieve desiccant was the third product addition. It gives
IGU manufacturers a reliable and superior quality desiccant
with high adsorption capacity keeping the unit free from
moisture.
The final product was TruShield. It is a high quality coating
that bonds to glass and makes it easy to clean. Unlike many
other products, TruShield doesn’t depend on specific
environmental conditions. This means it will work in all
locations, including north-facing windows as well as those in
the sun, so the benefits will be seen even on shaded glass.
The product launch was part of the silver jubilee celebrations
as Edgetech celebrates its 25th anniversary on 1 December
2014. Joined by long standing customers, suppliers and press,
Edgetech’s guests enjoyed spectacular views of the Manchester
skyline from the rooftop of Great John Street Hotel.
Guest and longstanding customer Adrian Barraclough,
Quickslide’s CEO, added: “It's evident that Edgetech is in
business for the long term and it's very comforting to have a
partner company who is at the top of their
game and continuously looking for ways to improve our
industry efficiencies.” i

The Certass Column
Time for a Change
Over the past 8 years, Certass has worked hard to develop its relationships with both existing
and new members as they come on board. Here’s what the contractors themselves have to say
T
ime and time again, contractors tell us that, when
they choose Certass, they
are pleased with the service they receive from the
first contact through the sales
team and right through to our certification team who look after
them once their application is
completed.
We always ask our new members why they chose to join Certass and in 2014, they told us
they joined because:
• Our fee structure – our members prefer to spread their costs
over 12 months rather than paying an up-front annual fee.
• Simple application process –
our members are able to complete forms and upload their doc-

uments online or complete paper
forms and email, fax or post them
back to us.
• Friendly and supportive administration – there’s always
someone at the end of the phone
to answer any membership questions.
• TrustMark membership included* - the TrustMark logo is
something that homeowners have
come to trust and our members
get it at no extra cost.
• Certass name and logo – our
brand is recognised as one that
delivers quality to our members
and their customers.
• Technical expertise – as well
as providing industry handbooks,
our inspectors are on hand to answer technical questions form our
members, helping them to comply
with current building regulations.
Certass membership is the extra
tool in the tool box for contractors; helping them where needed
and providing them with a name
that makes them stand out
amongst the rest.
Are you ready to come on
board and shine above the rest?
If you are, the process is easy
and we have a dedicated sales
team who are here to help you
through your application process,
every step of the way. i

Installer Schemes
More Support, Less
Small Print Please!
Mark Schlotel, head of marketing at Synseal talks to The Installer magazine about the value
of installer schemes and offers some top tips on choosing one that will offer real value to
your business
S
ome people say that
rules are there to be
broken. I couldn’t possibly say that! But I do
believe we are asking
for trouble by adding
more and more rules of engagement into the mix. How on earth
do we expect people to remember them all for a start? This applies to all aspects of life and the
window industry is no different.
And yet some suppliers wish to
lay down the law to their installing customers to give them
even more things to think about.
While I am a passionate advocate of quality, I start to wonder
how useful this is.
We all have the rules of industry standards to abide by and
these really shouldn’t be broken
because they are there to protect
the consumer with assurances of
quality. Then we have the voluntary schemes that many of the
professional outfits in our market
are signed up to such as Secured
by Design. Installers also have to
accommodate the particular requirements of each individual
homeowner to give them the service and overall experience they
want. In addition many installers
in the industry are signed up to
one or more installer schemes
which come with their own set of
small print terms and conditions.
Associations and
installer schemes –
do they add power
to your elbow?
So are installer schemes becoming saturated?
I wonder how many installer
schemes of one description or
another exist in the window industry today? I wouldn’t even
like to take a guess as there
seem to be new ones popping
up all the time. Whether they are
industry wide or supplier-focussed schemes, does the number of schemes available make
them less valuable or can they really make a difference to an installer’s business?
All the leading suppliers really
value the loyalty shown by installers who want to promote
their products and the power of
positive brand association
should never be underestimated
but of course it depends on the
scheme in question as to how
useful it is or isn’t. Research tells
us that installers definitely want
and need essentials such as van
stickers and good quality retail
brochures. However, those that
offer a certificate, a van sticker
and a set of rules for the installer
to abide by to stay in the scheme
probably aren’t going to boost
your sales dramatically if at all.
But some of the schemes available today are the next generation of installer scheme and offer
a much more comprehensive
package with powerful benefits.
What’s your view on
official and unofficial
industry associations? >>>

Installer Schemes
<<< Installers today need associations that really mean something
to help them stand out from the
crowd. All Checked for example
is an online home improvement
directory that includes a quality
rating and feedback function for
homeowners to leave their reports. Fairtrades on the other
hand is a trade association specialising in providing business
benefits to busy installers working in home improvement.
HomePro Insurance provides a
range of Insurance Backed Guarantees to protect homeowners
and Trustmark is where hundreds
of thousands of consumers head
to look for reputable tradesmen
that hold the Trustmark. All of
these associations provide tangible benefits with great consumer
recognition.
Whether through the associations or a dedicated homeowner
website with a ‘find your local installer’ function of its own, a
good installer scheme will generate real leads for new business.
Keep on keeping ahead
An online presence is becoming
increasingly important for home
improvement companies so the
support you receive should reflect that. For example individual
tailored website design and hosting support is a good start. Ongoing product training is also a
great way to keep up with the
very latest product developments
and market trends.
Installer schemes with practical
value go above and beyond and
include elements of tailored support whether it be design of adverts, drop cards and local
newspaper advertorials or even
trading identity logo creation
and development.
structed in the right way and focussed on delivering practical
help, not rules. With so many to
choose from now, installers can
afford to be more discerning in
deciding which ones to align
themselves with.
Synseal’s Registered Installer
(SRI) business support, launched
in April last year and now boasting 440 members, offers all of
the above because we understand it needs to make a difference to the bottom line.
Synseal works hard to gain the
loyalty of its customers and we
don’t ever want to take that for
granted so we put just as much
effort into maintaining that loyalty as we do into winning it in
the first place. That means listening to what installers need and
doing our best to meet those
needs. i

HadlowTower Steels the Show
The window renovation work on Grade I listed Hadlow Tower in Kent, has been undertaken by
Steel Window Association member, The Cotswold Casement Company, which manufactured 84
replacement steel windows and refurbished nine existing windows.
Hadlow Tower was built in 1838 and only minimal maintenance had been carried out to the octagonal Gothic
Revival structure during its life. Those steel windows which could be salvaged were carefully removed to be shot blasted
and fully refurbished.
Each window was slightly different and 68 of the steel windows had either shaped heads or
glazing above fitted directly into the intricate stonework. Templates were taken of each and because
of the complexity of the shapes, the glazed sections were laser cut. Due to the building’s listed status,
single glazing was used throughout; two windows were glazed with leaded lights manufactured
using Polish Cordele glass while the remainder were of laminated glass as much of the glazing runs
past staircases or is otherwise vulnerable.
To make steel windows to match the sightlines of the originals, the Cotswold Casement Company
employed a combination of standard steel profiles and for some of the larger windows, a variety of
sections from the W20 steel window range. The steel was galvanized and then powder coated black.

To maintain the period style, monkey tail stays and handles were fitted. i
Synseal has been
shortlisted as a finalist
in two categories for
the upcoming G14
Awards, with winners
to be announced at
the
industry
gala
evening on Friday
21st November at the
London Hilton on Park
Lane.
The company is a finalist for Component Supplier of the Year. The
entry is based on the company’s claim to be a true ‘one-stop-shop’
provider of extruded PVC-U window and door profiles, conservatory
roofs, orangeries, hardware, sealed insulated glass units, vertical
sliding sash windows, patio doors and bi-fold doors all delivered to
fabricator partners as required on a single Synseal logistics transport
drop.
The second category for which Synseal has been shortlisted is
Glass Company of the Year, with the company’s Global Glass
division now operating from three plants at Huthwaite, Blackburn
and Wigan and manufacturing 4,000 IGUs a day including Celsius
performance glass units, with significant potential to increase further
through additional investments and optimised production streaming
at recently acquired Wigan premises. i synseal.co.uk
Rockdoor has reported a
surge in demand following the recent introduction
of two new door styles,
the Vermont & Illinois.
Launched earlier this year,
Rockdoors new styles, which
have been added to the Ultimate
Series, have become instant
favourites. Mark Simm, Rockdoors Sales Director, says:
“Homeowners love the doors
and the glass designs, whilst
Rockdoor installers benefit from the sales advantages provided thanks to their ‘uniqueness’ in the replacement door market.” Rockdoor has also introduced new glass designs for
other popular door styles to increase the product offering.
Mark Simm, continues: “Our customers from all over the
country have been extremely impressed with the latest additions. We expected them to be popular but we’re extremely
pleased at just how well these have been received by our customers. Not only can they promote Rockdoor as the strongest
and most thermally efficient composite door available, they
are now able to offer a door style and glass design to complement every home.” i rockdoor.com
Avocet’s Affinity hardware is now available from Door-Stop on its
3-day delivery of composite doors ordered via www.door-stop.co.uk.
Martin Dickie, Door-Stop’s Business Unit Manager, explains: “Our customers can now choose from four furniture ranges and five locks and
mix or match the brands to suit. The Affinity range is a fully matching,
hardware suite with a proven popularity. It looks great and offers
homeowners peace of mind.”
The Affinity suite features a 3D adjustable butt-hinge. It’s a slim, traditional looking hinge which can be adjusted in three dimensions (vertical,
horizontal and compression) making it quick and easy to install. There’s
also the ABS snap-secure lock, with an anti-bump, anti-snap cylinder. It’s
the only security cylinder which has the TS007 3 STAR rating as well as

NFA Awards Newly Sponsored
Liniar has been announced as sponsor of the National Fenestration Awards Cool Wall – the place where
installers, fabricators and systems companies nationwide can show off their work by uploading images online.
The scheme is run as part of the National Fenestration Awards and votes are cast online by people actively working
within and engaged with the industry. This results in one winner being declared each month – with an overall winner
announced at the end of the year.
Liniar will be the sole Cool Wall sponsor for the next two years and hopes to encourage its fabricators and installers
to enter their own images in the contest to demonstrate the high quality of the work they carry out each day. Marketing Director Sue Davenport explains: “The Cool Wall is a great way to
showcase some of the gorgeous work we know installers are proud of –
and as it’s online, it’s easy to vote for a winner. The sponsorship agreement will see Liniar increase its online presence and we look forward
to working more closely with the NFA to maximise the potential of this
opportunity.” Submit a photo at

Kenrick’s Standard Euro profile has been successfully
tested in accordance with BS EN 1303:2005 by Exova
in Warrington. The cylinder comfortably achieved 100,000
operations during cycle testing and attained a premium result for
corrosion resistance with a 96 hour salt spray test rating. It also
achieved an overall grade 3 for key related security.
Steve Jones, MD at Kenrick, says: “We’re delighted that our
Standard cylinder has passed this testing, which underlines the
quality and durability of this product. Sales volumes of our cylinders have been excellent this year and there is no sign of this slowing down. This accreditation, together with the amount of choice
this range offers, really delivers value for money to a demanding
marketplace.”
There are more than 80 cylinders in Kenrick’s collection, which
spans three levels of security – Standard, Security and High
Security. i kenricks.co.uk

Morley
Glass and

has hosted
a two-day
visit by the
blind system manufacturer’s commercial director,
plus four major Italian customers, who came to the
UK on a fact finding mission.
The Italian delegation which was hosted by MD Ian Short, spent
two days with Morley Glass at its central Leeds factory and HQ
exploring how they could implement some of the manufacturing
processes and marketing approaches that have underpinned the
company’s market position.
But it is not just Italian customers who are looking to Morley
Glass for best practice – Ian Short has also been to Germany to
share his expertise with customers there.
Speaking during his visit, Alessandro Pellini said: “Morley Glass
has an excellent track record in the manufacture and supply of
ScreenLine blinds which we believe our other European customers
can learn from and deploy new ideas, together strengthening
ScreenLine’s global brand.” i morleyglass.co.uk
Solidor has expanded it’s slab only service for fabricators and door manufacturers, with the offering of a complete range of door designs, 17 through
colours inside and out, ODL TriSYS cassettes, glazing, hardware and accessories all delivered nationwide in 3-5 days.
The company believes the latest expanded offering will entice more manufacturers to make the change to a composite door slab that’s produced in
the UK with a solid, hardwood core.
Solidor claims its slab is 10% thicker than the standard imported ones from
the Far East and is suited to a standard door outer frame from the likes of
Kömmerling, Deceuninck, Rehau, Spectus, Swish, Synseal and VEKA among
many other leading systems in the UK. For fabricators it’s a benefit to be
able to use a standard door outer frame and so there’s no issue of additional
stockholding for a dedicated composite door frame in white, plus all of the
colour options, says the company. i solidor.co.uk

Lets hear it for the Minster Men
REHAU fabricator Yorkshire Trade Windows has announced a new
sponsorship deal with League Two football club York City.
The company’s retail brand Minster Windows is now featuring on advertising
hoardings across the whole of the back of the Popular Stand at the club’s Bootham
Crescent ground and in The Citizen, the match day magazine. Known as ‘The Minstermen’, York City is an obvious fit for Minster Windows in terms of local marketing and, for Yorkshire Trade, it is a great opportunity to show its commitment to the
local community.
Stuart Drewell, MD at Yorkshire Trade says: “The club has a high profile in and
around York so we’re confident we’ll get a good return on our marketing investment. We are a proud Yorkshire business with a long association with the city of
York and we’re keen to demonstrate that to all of our customers.” i rehau.co.uk
Since it was unveiled at this year's FIT Show, The
VEKA UK Group's Approved Installer initiative has
already welcomed over 100 members onto its
books. The key aim of the scheme is to assist installers with selling VEKA and Halo products and there are a whole host of tools
to assist them. These include valuable sales leads from a dedicated consumer-facing website and access to exclusive, professionally-designed marketing materials. Add into this that it’s free
of charge to become an Approved Installer and it's easy to see
why the uptake has been so immediate! In addition to the first
100 Approved Installers, there are also around 40 Approved
Fabricators who are now eligible to approve their installer customers. Key to the Approved Installer marketing support offering
are the online Marketing Hubs, where users can access a wide
range of marketing templates for items such as drop cards, retail
brochures, pop-up stands and more. All of the items can be personalised at the click of a button and are preloaded to display
the installer’s full contact details, with their branding taking centre stage, supported by the Approved logo. i

Technal’s Soleal single and double leaf rebated door
– in both open-in and open-out configurations – surpassed the PAS 24 standard and achieved consistently excellent test results with very minimal
enhancements to the fixing of the hinges, striker and
lock. The locking system for the Soleal door has, as standard,
a half-turn deadbolt, roller lock and deadbolt, a two-point cylinder lock and a two-point lock with a square spindle.
For enhanced security, the door also has multi-point locking.
Hook lock or top and bottom shoot bolts for doors over 2.25m
high can also be supplied. Additional locking points can be
added according to project requirements.
The single leaf open-in and open-out hinged doors already
meet very high levels of security
in accordance with Class RC3
for burglar resistance to BS EN
1627-30. As an alternative to
key-operated locks, there is an
electro-magnetic system using
an integrated control pad within
the frame.
The Soleal door suite has
been specifically developed for
areas of heavy use, such as
apartment buildings, social
housing developments, hospitals, shopping and sports centres, offices and schools. i
