Creating Hope Providing Homes Shaping Futures A Capital Project supporting the Renovations of the Occupations, Inc. Children’s Group Homes CREATING HOPE ~PROVIDING HOMES ~ SHAPING FUTURES “What do we do with a magnificent 4,000 square foot eightbedroom Victorian home? What better use than a group home for children.” Commented RJ Smith. Smith, who understands firsthand what it is like for children to find themselves without a loving caring home, was one of the members of a compassionate group of community leaders who saw the immediate need to assist Occupations, Inc., with their vision to create a safe, comfortable home environment for children they support. That enthusiasm launched Occupations’ Capital Project to renovate its Children’s Group Homes. Recently, representatives from the local building trade unions, local contractors, businesses, contributors, and local community leaders, gathered at the site of the new boys’ home, for an informal “kick-off” of Occupations, Inc.’s capital project to renovate these homes in Orange County. A large portion of the fundraising effort for this capital project will be focused on renovating the residential facility for boys in Pine Bush, New York. Workers from Carpenters Local 279 and Laborers Local 17, along with IBEW Local 363 and Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 373, have started Phase 1 of the renovations at this beautiful two-story, eight bedroom Victorian house to create a warm, safe, comfortable home for up to ten boys. The renovations will include complete HVAC, electrical service, plumbing, kitchen, bathrooms, and septic systems (including carpentry, paint, tile, and other finishes). In addition to the boys’ residence, long awaited renovations and upgrades are well underway for the girls’ residence in Cornwall, New York. Like every other teenager in America, the home is the focal point for their daily lives. The work needed to make the houses into HOMES is great and varied and is being undertaken by a group of community volunteers. Local contractors, business and trade unions have already pledged a considerable amount of time and materials. A number of generous donations have been made, but many more are needed. Outreach efforts continue for additional in-kind donations and volunteers with construction skills. Your help is needed to make these houses into homes for the children we serve. We are seeking support from our community. The proceeds from the 2011 and 2012 Occupations Foundation Inc., Galas were dedicated to begin the significant capital project. A number of generous donations have been made, and outreach efforts are being initiated for building materials, equipment, and furnishings. The list of needs is extensive. There are many ways you can help complete this project to provide comfortable home environments for the youth in our programs. To find out how you can help, please contact Patti Archiere at (845) 692-4454, ext. 101. Below are photos of the girls’ home. WHAT DO WE NEED to complete this project? Building materials and supplies: Sheetrock, wood (2” x 4”, 2” x 6”), molding, kitchen cabinets, kitchen counter tops, flooring, carpeting, roofing supplies including shingles, gutters, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, interior and exterior paint, electrical fixtures. Appliances: Each home is in need of the following new appliances: refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer, microwaves and commercial freezers. Furniture: Ten bedroom sets are needed for each home. The total value of each bedroom set us approximately $1700. Bedroom furniture can be purchased by piece as well. Also needed is living room furniture, and kitchen and dining room furniture. Much of the furniture needed can be purchased through a local furniture store at a discount. To begin to address the need, some furniture was generously donated by individuals attending the 2012 Gala. Generators: Each home will need a portable generator for emergency situations. Household needs and electronics: Upon completion of the renovations of the children’s homes, a variety of household items will be needed to help create a comfortable, efficient and accommodate the needs of the children in the homes. Please see a detailed list of the needs for both childrens’ group homes included in the centerfold of this brochure. HOW CAN YOU HELP? They can be redeemed by cash, check or securities. In-Kind Gifts In-Kind gifts can be made to Occupations Foundation, Inc., and can be in the form of materials, supplies, furniture, and other household needs for this capital project. CREATING HOPE ~ PROVIDING HOMES & SHAPING FUTURES PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Relocation of the Boys’ Community Residence – Route 52: Presently this community residence is located in Washingtonville, NY, and is home for up to 10 boys, with an average age of 16. It is a residential facility licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services. Occupations, Inc., has held the license for this service since April 2010. The proposed relocation of the boys’ community residence in Pine Bush, NY. The need to relocate to another location is solely due to the poor physical condition of the Washingtonville home. The current home is in need of great repair and is located on a rather small lot in a residential neighborhood without adequate yard for recreation. The new proposed site in Pine Bush, NY, is a much larger home on over 3 acres of land, with eight bedrooms, and will accommodate our program well, following renovations. It is close to recreational facilities in the Pine Bush area as well as community shopping and restaurants. Renovations are presently underway with a targeted completion date of September 1, 2013. Renovation Needs for the Girls’ Home, “Angola”: The girls’ residence at Angola is home for up to 10 girls, with an average age of 16. This six-bedroom home provides easy access to schools, shopping, and community activities. It is in dire need of renovations as well. The carpeting throughout the house is worn and torn, the kitchen cabinetry and appliances are out of date, and the bathrooms are in need of new fixtures and flooring. Additionally, all of the rooms are in need of repair and painting and all of the furniture is very old. With the help of community members and businesses, minor renovations have begun at the girls’ home. New furnishings are needed throughout the home. It is hoped that these renovations will be completed by August of 2013, including all six bedrooms newly remodeled and furnished, bathrooms updated, and a new kitchen installed. WHAT DO WE NEED to complete this project? Building materials and supplies: Sheetrock, wood (2” x 4”, 2” x 6”), molding, kitchen cabinets, kitchen counter tops, flooring, carpeting, roofing supplies including shingles, gutters, electrical supplies, plumbing supplies, interior and exterior paint, electrical fixtures. Appliances: Each home is in need of the following new appliances: refrigerator, stove, washer and dryer, microwaves, and commercial freezers. Furniture: Ten bedroom sets are needed for each home. The total value of each bedroom set is approximately $1,700. Household needs and electronics: Upon completion of the renovations of the children’s homes, a variety of household items will be needed to help create a comfortable, efficient home and accommodate the needs of the children in.
