Scott takes the lead
HONEA PATH -- Zipporah
Scott seemed to take everything
in stride Friday night as she was
honored for being BHP’s all-time
leading scorer in basketball.
Although shy when talking
about the honor, the junior was
pleased.
“It’s an awesome feeling to take
over the all-time career scoring at
BHP,” she said. “I didn’t really
think about taking over the lead.
I just play basketball and it happened.”
Scott’s father Charles and
brother Jay helped her learn the
game. She started playing with the
Anderson Rec when she was seven
years old.
As a sixth grader she started
practicing with the Lady Bears during the summer. Her seventh-grade
year she was eligible to play varsity
and earned a starting position on
the BHP team.
She scored her first point on the
varsity, hitting a free throw against
Crescent on November 22, 2010.
The fifth-year letter winner
became the all-time leading scorer
on January 2 when she hit a floater
in the lane at Walhalla to score her
1765th career point.
After Friday’s game, she has
1913 points and still has half a
season and another year to play.
For her career, she has averaged
17 points per game, shooting 42%
from the field.
This season Scott averages 23.6
points per game and according to
Maxpreps.com she is the leading scorer in the state of South
Carolina.
Scott was recognized Friday
at halftime of the boys’ basketball
game.
Michelle Traynum, wife of
Lady Bear coach Rafael Traynum,
presented Scott with a plaque to
commemorate the honor.
Her teammates and parents,
Kathy and Charles Scott, joined her
on the court for the presentation.
Also in attendance were previous record holder Jasmine Gray
(2001-06), Carrie O’Dell Branyon
(1999-2003), who has scored the
third-most points, and Krystle
Pravia (2009-2012), who is seventh
among Lady Bears reaching the
1000-point mark.
HONEA PATH -- The junior
varsity girls won their second basketball game of the season Friday
as they defeated Palmetto 17-9.
The win gives the
Lady Bears a sweep
of the Mustangs.
BHP had little
trouble as they led
most of the way.
Madyson Barton
scored six points and
Brianna Bromeling
four to lead the Lady
Bears.
Jade Johnson had
three points, while
Breasia Sampson and
Keyanta Gambrell
had two points each.
The Lady Bears
played the first of
four games against
Palmetto on Friday
and set the stage for

sweep.

JV girls bounce Palmetto
HONEA PATH -- Although they
led most of the game, the Bears had
to fight off a determined Palmetto
basketball team Friday in order
to take a 67-57 win and remain
undefeated in region play.
“I’ve said it before, Palmetto
fights harder than anybody,” said
BHP boys’ coach Russ Tysl. “They
are a scrappy group and well
coached.”
Marcus Williams sank two free
throws early in the fourth quarter to
put BHP ahead by 16 points.
The Mustangs answered with
back-to-back three-pointers, to
close the gap to 12.
Williams, who scored eight
points over the last quarter, and
Xavier Hawthorne, who scored
five, kept BHP in the lead.
To the delight of the hometeam fans, both had slam dunks
in the last minute of the game.
Hawthorne’s followed a Palmetto
trey, which pulled the Mustangs to
within eight points.
BHP fell behind early in the
game, falling behind 4-0 before
Aaron Taylor tied the game at 6:30
with a trey and free throw.
After Palmetto took the lead
again, Hawthorne hit from behind
the arc to give BHP its first lead 7-6
after two minutes of play.
Juwann Abney stole the ball on
the defensive end and Williams
scored off an offensive rebound.
BHP followed with an 11-8 run to
lead by six at the first break.
The Bears extended their lead by
two over the next eight minutes.
Early in the third quarter Abney broke away for a dunk and
a 10-point lead, but the shooting
went cold. Palmetto closed the
deficit to three points at the 3:40
mark, but it was the last points they
would score in the quarter.
The Bears stepped up their
play. Taylor passed to Malcolm
Williams, who passed to Abney for
the lay-up to start an 11-0 run over
the last three minutes.
Marcus Williams (16 points),
Hawthorne (15 points) and Abney
(13 points) led BHP. Hawthorne
and Taylor had two treys each.
BHP (12-6, 8-0) sank 12 of 19
free throws.
Grant Houston led Palmetto
with 18 points, including three
treys and 4 for 4 from the freethrow line.
“Palmetto had way too many
looks tonight,” said Tysl. “When
we had to have offense, we had it
in spurts.
“We talk about rebound and
run, rebound and run. I thought in
the second half we rebounded and
ran better than we’ve done all year
when we had to do it.
“I’m proud of these guys. We’re
8-0 and we keep finding a way. It’s
fun. I feel like we were in a close
game, but you look at the score
board and it’s a 10-point game. We
keep fighting.”
With six region games left,
Tysl realizes that the Bears are on
everybody’s list.
“You get everybody’s best shot
from here on out,” he said. “I’m
proud of this team, proud of these
coaches. They prepared mentally
and physically. I thought we were
ready to play and answered the
call. I’m proud of the way they
responded.”
For the first time in at least three
decades, the stands were packed.
In fact, the standing room was
also packed.
“We’ve been trying to figure out
what it would take to fill the gym
with fans,” said Tysl. “I think being
7-0 did it and I hope being 8-0 will
bring everybody back on Tuesday
and for the rest of the season.
“The student section was awesome. They are amazing. If we can
get this crowd in here for the next
four home games, we are going to
be hard to beat. I’m excited. These
people are excited. It’s fun!”
BHP defeated Wren earlier in
the week. No individual results
were reported.

HONEA PATH -- The Lady
Bears broke the Mustangs Friday
as they easily won 56-35.
Zipporah Scott led all scorers
with 22 points on a night planned
to honor her.
At half time of the boys’ game,
the junior was recognized as BHP’s
all-time leading scorer. After Friday’s game she has a career total
1913 points.
Scott gave the Lady Bears a 4-0
lead over the Mustangs when she
scored a field goal and later sank
two free throws.
BHP extended its lead to 9-0
before Palmetto got on the score
board with two and half minutes
left in the first quarter.
The long ball was on target for
the Lady Bears as they more than
doubled the Mustangs’ scoring by
the half.
Scott and Shanteal Davis had
two three-pointers each, while
Dominique Duck had one.
Davis hit another from behind
the arc for BHP’s first points of
the third quarter. Duck ended the
quarter with a three and opened the
fourth with another one.
The Lady Bears had a total of
eight three-pointers for the game.
BHP displayed good teamwork
in the last quarter as each player
looked for the open girl and scored
inside.
Vieandra Dixon was on the receiving end of several passes.
Davis had 11 points for the
game, while Duck and Dixon had
nine each.

Earlier in the week BHP
dropped a region game to Wren,
losing 60-47.
The Hurricanes outscored the
Bears 23-12 in the second quarter,
which proved to be the difference
in the game.
During the eight minutes Wren
hit three baskets from behind the
arc and had scoring from five different players.
Scott took high-game honors
with 22 points. Nakol Franks had
18 points to lead Wren.
A week earlier the Lady Bears
came from behind to defeat Seneca
45-42.
Trailing by two, BHP outscored
the Bobcats 10-5 over the last eight
minutes to claim the victory.
Dixon led all scorers with 16
points, while Scott pumped in 15.

Hill took a charge, negating Palmetto’s basket. On the offensive
end he took a pass from Moss and
scored to put BHP ahead 40-27.
With just over two minutes left
to play, Hill dished to Oliver for two
more points and seconds later scored
again to give the Bears a 20-point
lead, their biggest of the game.
Moss took high-game honors
with 12 points. Oliver added 10
and Hill nine.
Deandre Cooley had six, including a three-pointer. Zye Scott, Noah
Brady (three-pointer) and Charles
Clinkscales (2-for-2 free throws)
had four points each. Braxton Wooten added two and Isaac Collier one
to round out the scoring.
Earlier in the week BHP de-
feated Wren 34-30.
“We won despite a woeful 7 for
20 from the free-throw line,” said
coach Anthony Pitts. “Our trap
and pressure caused them some
problems.”
Moss led BHP with a game-high
20 points. Clinkscales added seven
and Oliver three. Cooley and Hill
had two points each.
The JV Bears will host WestOak on Wednesday. The game was
moved one day earlier than scheduled so the two middle schools
could play their last game of the
season at BHP.

the girls’ game which begins at

region basketball game Friday as
they beat Palmetto 52-33.
The JV Bears (9-4, 7-1) pumped
in 20 points in the final six minutes, while holding the Mustangs

an aggressive full court press and
