The lavish onetime home of
William Randolph Hearst and
actress Marion Davies in Beverly
Hills has been placed back on
the market for $95 million — a
steep discount from the $165 million price it carried just a few
years ago, the real estate agent
announced Monday.
The so-called Beverly House
is more than 50,000 square feet,
was built in the 1920s by banking executive Milton Getz, who
sold the property to Davies in
1946. Davies bought the home
for Hearst, who moved there from
San Simeon.
John F. Kennedy and his bride
Jacqueline honeymooned at the
estate. The home is also familiar
to millions of movie fans for its
appearance in “The Godfather”
as the home of movie executive
Jack Woltz, who unceremoniously
finds a horse’s head in his bed.
The Mediterranean-style estate
is perched on a hilltop, covering nearly four acres above the
Beverly Hills Hotel.
The home is owned by investor Leonard Ross, who recently
filed for bankruptcy. According to
the real estate company handling
the listing, Ross has owned the
property for 30 years, and during
that time he has refurbished and
expanded the estate by adding
more than 20,000 square feet to
the size and also reacquired an
adjacent property.
The main level of the estate
includes a 50-foot entry hall, a living room with 22-foot-high arched
ceilings and a library. The billiard
room includes herringbone parquet floors and a carved-stone
fireplace mantle from Hearst’s
San Simeon mansion.
Also included are a formal dining room, breakfast room, family
room with outdoor terrace, artdeco nightclub, wine cellar and
two projection rooms.
There is also a spa, gym and
massage room, tennis court, guest
house above an eight-car garage
and a separate two-bedroom
apartment.
A total of 16 winners were
named Monday as the 2010-11
Los Angeles County “Teachers
of the Year,” in the state’s largest honors competition for K-12
educators.
Among the winners was Patty
Eskridge, who teaches first grade
at Farragut Elementary School in
the Culver City Unified School
District. She has been teaching
for 34 years.
The winning educators teach
a range of grades and subjects
at a diversity of school locales,
including Arcadia, Baldwin
Park, Canoga Park, Downey, Los
Angeles, Long Beach, Paramount
and Pasadena.
The entire field of 81 teachers
who participated in the competition had all been recently selected as teacher(s) of the year by
their respective school districts,
according to the Los Angeles
County Office of Education.
Each winner received a
$1,000 cash prize courtesy of
the California Credit Union, the
program’s main sponsor.
The largest local competition
of its kind in the state and nation
is part of the oldest and most prestigious honors contest in the U.S.
for public school teachers.
The number of winners is determined by program rules based on
the total number of school teachers — 80,000 — in L.A. County.

A judge on Friday issued
a temporary order requiring
that visits with the children of
slain restaurant owner Monica
Beresford-Redman by their
maternal aunts be supervised by
a neutral third person.
Los Angeles Superior Court
Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff
issued the directive in response
to complaints by the children’s
paternal grandparents and temporary guardians.
David and Juanita BeresfordRedman contend their late
daughter-in-law’s two sisters
have made derogatory remarks
about their son to his children,
5-year-old Camila and 3-yearold Alec, including statements
alleging he killed their mother.
The body of Bruce BeresfordRedman’s wife was found in
April in a sewer at the Moon
Palace Hotel in Cancun, where
she was vacationing with her
husband.
A warrant has been issued in
Mexico for his arrest and he is
charged in that country with his
wife’s killing.
Beckloff’s order was hotly
opposed by Patricia Phillips,
the attorney for the aunts, Jeane
Burgos and Carla Van Bastelaar.
She argued it was based on “the
most unsupported evidence I’ve
seen in a long time” — declarations by Juanita and Bruce
Beresford-Redman that contained “speculative, salacious
allegations,” most of it hearsay.
Referring to the children’s
father, Phillips said the statements in his declaration “come
from a man wanted for murdering his wife in Mexico.”
But Beckloff said he wants
a third party present for the
visits until he hears testimony
from the declarants in a trial set
to begin in early November to
determine permanent guardianship of the children.
“I don’t know what’s going
on with these kids, but at least
a monitor lets us know if what
Jeane and Carla are doing is
beyond reproach,” the judge
said.

Guggenheim and produced by
Lesley Chilcott, the film is never
dull or didactic. It presents its

archival footage and condenses
a mass of educational research
using some intriguing animated
techniques to highlight the reality of the situation.
According to the film, the leg-

Have they watched some of
your earlier shows?
They have and they think they
are funny. They really like “Kenan & Kel,” and they and all their
friends love the “Good Burger”
movie. To be honest, it’s them
who got me into “Fred” world.
They consume their entertainment so much differently than
I do. They don’t really watch
TV. They watch everything on
[DVR] or on their computer on
YouTube. About a year ago I
came home, and my kids were
having a sleepover with a bunch
of their friends, and I asked the
guys, “Hey, have you ever heard
of ‘Fred’ and they all started
doing the “Fred” voice, joking
around. I said, “Well, let me ask
you this, would you want to see
a ‘Fred’ movie?” and without
hesitation one of them said, “Tonight?” That was it, I knew I had

people so we thought it would
only be natural to bring them to
life. We wanted to hold onto the
essence of the Fred on YouTube,
and I think we have done a pretty
good job of being true to that.
This is the first YouTube to film
transfer, and I’m really proud of
the movie. It’s smart, and in a lot
of ways, it’s like our “Napoleon
Dynamite.” It’s been really fun,
and we are already working on
the second one.
Are you looking for any other
projects that will go from YouTube to screen?
I wouldn’t say specifically,
but the world is changing so rapidly that I’m not that pretty sure
there’s going to be a difference in
the way that we consume our entertainment. I think YouTube is
just an amazing resource. I look
at my kids, and they don’t know
the difference between YouTube
and ABC.
“Fred” has been such a huge
hit on YouTube. Do you have
any concerns about trying to
translate that same magic to a
movie?
I wouldn’t say that we have
concerns, but I think we were
very careful when we approached the script to be true to
what Lucas/Fred had done. We
didn’t want to change it; we just
wanted to evolve it. What we
set out to do was to explore all
of these characters that he had
talked about — his mom, the
bully Kevin, his best friend Bertha, the girl he loves, Judy — but
we have never seen any of these

acy of the modern American education system, born in the 1950s,
was that 20 percent of kids who
went through it would become
CEOs, doctors and lawyers, another 20 percent would work in
offices and the rest would toil in
the factories.
Nevertheless, with full employment, that system met the
nation’s economic needs until America engaged Russia in
superpower politics and other
nations like Japan and China
emerged as economic threats.
Since then, successive presidents from — Lyndon Johnson,
Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton to
George W. Bush’s “No Child Left
Behind” and Barack Obama’s
“Race to the Top” — have promised to fix education.
But today, the system seems
like a Kafkaesque, bureaucratic
nightmare, with tens of thousands of local school districts,
city regulators and state and federal oversight.
Refreshingly,
Guggenheim
doesn’t shirk away from going
for the political jugular, noting
that teacher union clout has exerted massive pressure on both
parties, especially the Democrats.
“We have often been called a
special interest and I will never
apologize for that because our
special interests are the students
we teach, they’re worth fighting
for with every weapon in our arsenal,” said Randi Weingarten,
President of the American Federation of Teachers.
However, on some levels that
would seem to be an oxymoron.
The film exposes long entrenched school practices like
“The Dance of the Lemons,” the
process by which school principals pass their most poorly performing (but tenured) teachers
onto other schools because they
can’t fire them; an inside look
into the absurdities of the “Rubber Room,” where teachers under
investigation are sometimes paid
for years to sit and do absolutely
nothing.
But at the emotional core of
“Superman” is the story of five
children whose future hopes and
dreams are held hostage to decades of well-meaning but ineffectual solutions to prepare the
country for the global challenges
ahead.
For instance, among 30 developed countries, the U.S. is
ranked 25th in math and 21st in
science. By the year 2020, 123
million American jobs will be
high skill/high pay, but only 50
million Americans will be qualified for them.
Thus we meet the five kids:
Anthony, a Washington D.C.
fifth-grader who lost his father
to drugs; Bianca, a Harlem kindergartner whose single mom
can no longer afford Catholic
school tuition; Daisy, an L.A.
fifth-grader who dreams of college even though her parents
Do you still have the leather

I don’t have that jacket, but I

which looks very similar, and
since I realized that, I haven’t
worn it.
Unintentional or not, Woody
Allen’s new London-based comedy seems to combine the twee
Englishness of Richard Curtis
with the caustic working class
humor of Mike Leigh — except hailing from those particular worlds both, naturally, do it
much better.
In “You Will Meet a Tall Dark
Stranger,” written and directed
by the 74-year-old auteur, Allen’s long-running obsessions
with love, infidelity, anxiety and
mortality are given a mildly funny airing.
Which is quite sad for this Allen fan, whose comedic gems in
movies like “Annie Hall,” “Love
and Death,” and “Play It Again,
Sam,” have provided some of the
most quotable lines in the movie
history.
Here, the plot follows a pair of
married couples: Alfie (Anthony
Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma
Jones) and their daughter Sally
(Naomi Watts) and her husband
Roy (Josh Brolin).
A voiceover informs us that
Alfie has succumbed to a late-life
crisis and left Helena, prompting
meet a tall, dark stranger.” It’s a
classic fraudulent line and in Allen’s morose world, a metaphor
for the grim reaper.
Ironically, Roy’s the one who’s
in for a romantic rendezvous,
falling instantly for an attractive
Indian musician (Freida Pinto)
that he spies out of his window.
Switching back and forth
throughout the story, we find that
the new-look Alfie thinks he’s
discovered the secret of eternal
youth, and promptly proposes to
a blonde, mini-skirted prostitute,
Charmaine (Lucy Punch), who
has a voice like a foghorn.
It seems in so many of his
other films — for instance Larry
David’s ranting lunacy in 2009’s
“Whatever Works” — keeping
the angst and relationship complications up in the air has been
an Allen trademark.
Of course, that was filmed back
in New York, territory Allen has
mined for material for nearly a
half-century. Yet, despite having
made a couple of films in London, the city still seems palpably
foreign to him.
The exterior action is condensed to what looks like a
couple of streets behind Har-

her to turn to a psychic (Pauline
Collins) who, unsurprisingly,
tells her exactly what she wants
to hear.
Meanwhile, Sally and her
mother are paying the price of artistic failure in the form of Roy,
who trained as a doctor but found
early success with his first novel.
Today, he is struggling to live up
to a feat he hasn’t been able to
re-create since.
The only thing Sally has to
look forward to is making girlish
eyes at her handsome art gallery
boss (Antonio Banderas), but she
becomes increasingly frazzled as
she sees her life slipping away
with Roy’s flash-in-the pan literary career.
However, he is banking on
one more shot, awaiting word on
his latest novel and being driven
nutty by his mother-in-law, who
continually pops around and
swears by the word of her fortune teller. She tells Roy that
he should forget the writing —
and by the way, it was recently
prophesied that she will have a
new romance.
While threatening to kill Helena, Roy dismisses her quackery
with the line: “Yes, and you will
didn’t finish high school; Emily,
a Silicon Valley eighth-grader
who is unwillingly put on a noncollegiate track; and Francisco, a
Bronx first-grader whose school
cannot motivate him to excel.
Unlike the film’s originator — who explains that he was
moved to act when taking his
young children to their expensive private school, bypassing
their horrendously performing
public counterparts — the only
way out of their predicament is
sheer luck.
That comes in the form a surreal aspect of the public education
system: lotteries that select students for the new breed of public
and private charter schools that
in some instances are transforming the educational prospects of
urban students.
So Anthony is one of 61 applicants vying for 24 spots at
SEED Charter School, where
nine of ten students go on to college; Francisco and Bianca have
a 5 percent chance of getting into
the Harlem Success Academy,
Daisy’s one of 135 applying for
rods, where the same Black extra
seems to walk into view, no matter the scene.
And in the battle of the sexes,
the women clearly came out on
top.
Even if the film went on for
another hour, it seems unlikely
that Hopkins would have found
any truer motivation for his character, as he paused and overthought what should have been a
more dynamic performance.
Brolin, playing the closest
thing to Allen’s persona, is not
too bad — but he can’t quite nail
true neuroticism.
That leaves Royal Academy of
Dramatic Art-trained Jones, almost reprising her persona as the
slightly dotty mother in “Bridget
Jones’s Diary.” Watts scores dramatic points, especially with a
well-timed meltdown, and Punch
getting the biggest laughs.
But the last words should go to
the maestro of mirth.
Asked recently why, given
his bleak view of the world, he
continues to make films, Allen
replied: “It’s a distraction that
has its own little challenges and
consequently keeps my mind off
morbid thoughts.”
10 places at KIPP (Knowledge is
Power) L.A. Prep and Emily has
a 24 percent chance of getting
into Summit Preparatory Charter
High School.
Harlem Success is the brainchild of Geoffrey Canada, who
captivated the nation by creating
the Harlem Children’s Zone, an
area of 97 square blocks where
high school and college graduation rates have sky-rocketed.
He also provides the film’s
title, recalling: “One of the saddest days of my life was when
my mother told me ‘Superman’
did not exist. Cause even in the
depths of the ghetto you just
thought he was coming … She
thought I was crying because it’s
like Santa Claus is not real. I was
crying because no one was coming with enough power to save
us.”
The documentary builds with
thrilling intensity as emotion is
etched onto the faces of these
young children as they sit and
wait with their families for a ball
to be dropped or names to be
pulled from a box.

met with the victim who stated that her vehicle was missing. The victim said she locked and parked her vehicle on
Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m. When she returned to find her vehicle
was missing.
Grand Theft Person
On Sept. 12, approximately 3:55 p.m., a shopper was
placing her groceries into her car in the parking lot located
at 11000 block of Jefferson Boulevard. A male AfricanAmerican suspect in his late teens, with a short ponytail,
light colored shirt and denim shorts ran up, brushed past
the shopper, and grabbed her purse from the shopping cart.
The suspect ran southbound through the lot and out of
sight. Officers conducted an area check but were unable to
locate the suspect or the victim’s discarded purse.
Armed Robbery
On Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m., an armed robbery occurred in
the 5600 block of Sepulveda Boulevard. The suspect was
described as a male Hispanic, late 30s, medium build, short
dark hair, and goatee. The suspect entered the business
and presented a demand letter and showed a firearm. The
suspect then took U.S. currency in the amount of $2,850
and fled the location.
Residential Burglary
On Sept. 7 at about 11:30 a.m. a citizen saw two suspicious subjects leaving the side yard of a residence in the
5000 Rhoda Way. One of the subjects dropped a pair of
gloves and the two walked away from the residence toward
cars parked along Ocean, near the park. The citizen called
Culver City Police about the unusual activity and officers
responded to the area. During the investigation the officers
found that the residence on Rhoda Way had been burglarized, with miscellaneous property removed, including two
handguns. The first suspects was described as black male,
18-20 years of, five-foot-nine, 165-185 pounds, clad in a
gray hooded pullover sweatshirt and baggy blue jeans. The
second suspect was described as 18-20 years of, five-footsix, 130-165 pounds, clad in black shirt and blue jeans.
Car Vandalized

vehicle had been vandalized in the 4100 block of Jackson
Avenue. The victim stated unknown suspect(s) smashed
her windshield and fled the location.

BERESFORD from page A1
Beckloff left the current
weekly visitation time by the
aunts at about 15 hours per
week. However, he lamented
the impact of the intra-family
bickering on the boy and girl.
“It’s an extremely difficult situation for these small children,”
Beckloff said.
The judge denied a request by
Phillips that a monitor also be
present when the children are
with their grandparents and their
father, who all live together.
After the hearing, Rachel S.
Silverman, one the grandparents’
attorneys, said she is optimistic both sides can agree on the
neutral observer so that money
can be saved. She said she
also expects Bruce BeresfordRedman to be present for the
guardianship trial.
Silverman was critical during
the hearing of two recent media
appearances by Burgos and Van
Baselaar, saying they were putting their understandable desires
to find justice for their sister
above the interests of their niece
and nephew.
Beckloff said that if he has to
name the monitor himself, the
aunts will have to pay the cost.
But Phillips said the sisters cannot afford the expense of a paid
monitor because of the costs of
burying their sibling.
Phillips also argued that the
producer’s parents and their lawyers have made three attempts to
curtail the visitation privileges
by the aunts so as to almost
make the permanent guardianship trial meaningless.
According to a sworn statement by Juanita Beresford-

Redman, her grandchildren have
told her their aunts have repeatedly said negative things about
their father.
“They told me daddy was a
stupid old man and he killed my
mommy,” Camila said, according to her paternal grandmother.
And in his own declaration,
Bruce Beresford-Redman said
he was “saddened to say that
it appears Carla and Jeane are
using the children as pawns in
a battle they wish to have with
me.”
“I am no longer comfortable with my children having
unmonitored visitation with
their maternal aunts,” the former
“Survivor” producer said.
In her declaration, Burgos
says her nephew was with her
at a supermarket last month
when they passed through the
alcoholic beverages section and
the toddler pointed to a certain
brand of beer, saying it was the
one he liked.
“When I asked him if he liked
beer, he told me that Palma
Louca was the beer daddy gives
him to drink,” Burgos stated. “I
was shocked by this statement,
so I asked Camila if what Alec

said their father gave them beer

Responding to Burgos’ statement, Bruce Beresford-Redman
said he “let Alec drink water

LOS ANGELES WAVE - CULVER CITY EDITION
Events seen as boon for Culver

Four-year-old Christian Shaffer examines some of the offerings at the annual Fiesta of Gems in
Culver City held in July. Some event promoters are concerned about a proposed new policy.

benefit to the city, its visibility,
ability to increase foot traffic,
business attraction, uniqueness,
media exposure and marketing
strategy. As members of the
council see it, the shift in policy
will allow the city to assist a
wider pool of event promoters.
But Mike Snell, president of
the Exchange Club of Culver
City, said such a policy would
place a burden on organizers
who would have to scramble to
make up the difference in costs.
Rather than taking away from
special events, he added, the city
should view them as opportunities to raise both money and the
city’s profile.
“[Visitors] get to see what the
city has to offer. ...They will tell
their neighbors and friends,” he
said. “It can’t be measured by
dollars and cents.”
Jay Shery, a resident who
volunteers at the annual Culver
City Car Show — which normally receives roughly $12,000
in cash sponsorships, fee waivers and in-kind services and uses
donations to support school programs, youth centers and on
campus improvements — urged
“the council to support the continuation of the Culver City Car
show and funding that you’ve
done over the past seven years,
in in-kind services,” he said.
“Consider the value of the car
show and what it brings in economically for the city. We bring
in foot traffic, approximately 14,000 people every year.
It benefits the restaurants and
provides media exposure. ...It
brings enormous benefit to the
city that you can’t generate from
the amount of funds you’ve provided us in the past.”
However, Steven Rose, president of the Culver City Chamber
of Commerce, thought the
proposed plan was “good and
very well thought out.” He said
the local business community
should take a greater hand in
sponsorships, because of the
extra commerce generated by
special events.
“It is encouraging people to
be creative,” he said of the new
policy under consideration. “In
the chamber world, you don’t
run an event year after year just
because it’s there.”
